#25: Preamble
Oh! Well, thank you. Hmph! Finally, some respect for all we've done. I'm pretty sure everyone with eight badges gets this treatment, Lilly. Ah, let 'er have her moment. It's not every day we get treated like we're a big deal, I admit. I just wish... Me too, Manic. Me too.
That's okay, I can handle- No, you can't. Seriously? I have a team of high-level- To pieces. ...that bad, huh? This gate isn't to keep you out. It's to keep them in. Sheesh. Okay, okay!
What's blocking it? Maybe I can help. Me. So there's no blockade? I am the blockade. Urgh. Okay, let me try a different way. Is there any reason aside from you that we can't take this route? Yeah. All the other guards. This is a neutral area, buddy; there's an understanding. Nobody passes this way. Easy access to one's foe in a war would be highly unbalancing. I get it. If anyone was allowed to pass this way in either direction, it'd be a huge asset to that side in the war. So, to keep the League from getting wrecked... ...they don't let anyone through. Okay, okay.
Jagged cliffs, powerful pokemon, a circuitous route to our goal... We can make it throu- COOL! Come again? Think of all the rare pokemon and useful items that are bound to be in here! C'mon, race you! Man, I'm never gonna get used to that. To the kid actin' like a kid? Might wanna try. Right about now, the other Manic is probably talking tactics and giving orders... Probably, but this one's a lot of fun! C'mon, let's follow him! I AM TRAPPED WITH IMBECILES.
Hey, Manic. I've gotta ask you something. While we're ahead of the others. Sure thing, Lilly. What's up? You sorta went into badass hardcore mode back there with Anemoi. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining! It was pretty cool. But...what happened? Oh, right. I don't know, I just saw it there with Priscilla, and I knew that I couldn't let her death be in vain. And then it started copping an attitude with me, and I just sorta snapped! I guess everybody has a badass side, even you! Ha! I know that wasn't meant as a compliment, but I'll take it as one. One thing's been bugging me, though. Yeah? Why didn't the other me just use the Master Ball right off the bat? Priscilla didn't need to die for this! I dunno, but tell you what. Next time I see him, I'll ask! Really? Thanks, Lilly. You're a pal. A badass pal. Yeah, something like that!
Finally. After a million duplicates! For real! I got nothin' against Gravelers, but come on! It's a cave. And a good one! What do you expect? That reminds me, Manic. We're missing catches for both routes between New Bark and here, and we haven't even entered Dark Cave. I just wasn't feeling up to catching anything. Don't worry, we didn't have any wild encounters, so I guess we can go back later. More caves, even after this! Awww... Don't worry! It won't be right away. Besides, we've got each other, we'll be all right! IF THIS CONTINUES, I MAY BE SICK. AND SINCE THE LAST THING I ATE WAS YEARS AGO... Anemoi, if I want any shit out of you, I'll squeeze your neck. Keep your mouth shut and your eyes open...hang on, I've gotta take this.
Oakbot?? Just a friendly reminder to listen in to my radio show with your Pokegear! Wait. You're calling me for an advertisement? Affirmative! Who else are you calling! INSTRUCTIONS: Call every number in the Johto phone book and advertise your radio show, you bucket of bolts! Riiiiiiight. Well, that'll probably take a long time, so I guess I'll let you- Thanks for listening! *click* -go. Did I really sound like that before? Kinda, yeah. A little! Wow. That is...really annoying.
As above, so below. Whoah, whoah, wait. We're jumping into this hole?! Sure looks that way. Everybody ready? No, I ain't ready! We'll break our legs! Jack, listen. Do you see another way down? Well, there's the ladder. That's where we just came from. Jack. Do you trust me? Huh? Well, yeah, sure! It's safe. You can jump. I can't even see the bottom. How can you be sure? Because there are no other paths. If it wasn't safe, no one could challenge the league, and that runs counter to their motivations. So, since there's no other way to go, it's gotta be safe...okay, okay. Glad we got that settled. One...two...THREE!
(After a lot more wandering around...)
Manic, why are we doing this? C'mon, don't you wanna see what's down there? Yeah, but I'm tired! And the exit is right there! Come on, let's just come back for it. Where's your sense of adventure? BY ALL MEANS, LEAP INTO HOLES UNNECESSARILY. PERHAPS YOU WILL SNAP YOUR NECK AND I WILL BE FREE OF YOU. Hey! Put a lid on it, windbag! Oh, now we've gotta do it. Here we gooooo!
HELLO! Heh, nobody'll be as good at it as I am. You know, I think you have a point. What, seriously? No challenges? What's the point? You're a Ground type. Nobody will be as good at it as you are! Er, yeah. And don't you forget it! I think I might just save this for the other team. I don't think anybody there learns Earthquake naturally. Great, now can we go? I need a nap. UGH, CEASE YOUR WHINING, INSECT. Okay, okay, we're going. I think we're done here anyway.
...after a quick detour. Score! Maniiiiiiic... Molly. Listen. I know you're new to allowing yourself to feel, but with ability comes responsibility, okay? What do you mean? I can't believe I'm saying this, but Anemoi is right. You really are whining. Hmph! Well, fine. Maybe you should fight all the wild pokemon for a while! Molly, don't be like this. Come on. No, no, go ahead! If it's so easy, you do it! *sigh* Let's just get out of here. No more delays, I promise.
Okay, that was not my fault. Hello there, Manic. And not the one that should be here, either. How is it that he always knows these things ahead of time? And the esteemed Lugia. I would thank you for your efforts on my behalf, except that you seem to have joined my enemy. IT IS NOT BY MY CHOICE THAT I ACCOMPANY THIS BOY. Varas. What are you doing here?
...come to think of it, no. That's odd. Why do you suppose that is? Did you have something to do with it? Suffice to say, I didn't want any disturbances getting in the way. Oh, Arceus. Where are they, Varas? Defeat me, and I may tell you. We're talking about the fate of innocent people here! I suppose you had better not lose, then!
All right, team! We've got who-knows-how-many trainers relying on us, we have to stay strong! Listen to you prattle on while I have the upper hand! Molly, what can you tell me about their levels? It looks like they're about le- oh. Oh my. You're right to fear me, Molly. I will be your undoing! How bad? This is a little embarrassing. Okay, I'll admit, that's not the reaction I was expecting. So, uh, you know all that grinding we did in preparation to face Anemoi? Yeah? Yeah, uhm, Varas didn't do that... A team in the mid-to-upper thirties should be more than enough to crush you!
Not exactly. Our differences place us in different paradigms. See, you say embarrassing, I say funny! *yawn* Next. Are we overtrained, or are they undertrained? WE'VE SUCCESSFULLY DEFEATED FOES MUCH WEAKER THAN OURSELVES. I'M SO PROUD.
Varas, wait. Hmph. What do you want? Look. I know you think I killed your parents. You did! I understand. I don't remember doing any of that. I really, truly don't. But if I am somehow responsible, I'm sorry. You really are the Manic from the peaceful world. Your sappiness says it all! You think an apology is enough?! 'Gee whiz, Varas, sorry I murdered the only family you ever had, whoops, my bad'?! My father would have spit in your face at such weakness! Your father? I am the son of Maximus Giovanni himself! His one true heir! Varas. There's nothing to inherit. Correct. All thanks to you! One thing doesn't add up, though. Oh? What is it you fail to understand? The history books do say that Manic defeated Giovanni. What they don't mention is any kind of love interest for the man. At all. Yes, he was above such petty concerns. What of it? So...who was your mother?
The better parent. My true ancestor. Defeat me again, and I will make everything clear for you; striking you down for a crime you don't understand is proving to be unsatisfying. Oh, as for the other trainers, they've been sent home. They're perfectly healthy and don't even remember having been here. Yeah, you better run! I really don't understand him at all. To lose yourself to revenge like that... Lilly used Give A Damn! But it failed! C'mon, let's get outta here. Yeah. Yeah, I have to agree with Lilly on this. Let's get some rest.
Ooooh. It's really pretty in the twilight, isn't it? YOUR MORTAL SENTIMENTALITY- Awright, shut it, you! HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO ME THUS, RODENT! DO YOU EVEN KNOW- Yeah, yeah. You're a big legendary killer. Big fuckin' deal! You're also an asshole to the people around you. I COULD CRUSH YOU LIKE A DURANT! All she wanted to do was enjoy the sunset, but you hadda open your big fat mouth and start spouting about mortal this and sentimentality that. You may be tough, but I'd rather die than live under your foot. Hey, I have an idea! Yeah? Both of you shut up for a while. *pchoo x2* Brusque, but effective.
Are you really spending half of your savings on Full Restores? They're the best healing around, and my team gets the best! Damn right! Macroscopic healing on a microscopic scale. Um, what he said. I think? Now, everybody get some rest. We're not ready for the Elite Four yet, and we're going to spend all of tomorrow training on the pokemon in the Elite Four. An entire day spent kicking ass? It must be my birthday!
(OMFG all the grinding later...)
Okay, we're...ready. If you're trying to inspire confidence, you might want to try again. THE BOY IS RIGHT TO BE NERVOUS. I SENSE POWERFUL FOES WITHIN. I'm sure everyone will help everyone else out, though! Yeah. Yeah, you're right! We've got teamwork on our side, we can do this! Teamwork, pffft! I'll squish 'em with my thumb. You don't have thumbs. Technicalities! You know what I mean.
I understand that. This is a dream come true for me; all my life, I've waited to stand here! A dedicated agent, then! Oh, uh, no. I'm not an agent. Not an...then what are you doing here? It's my goal to become champion! Oh, man. Oh, wow. Lance is gonna love you! Uh. Thanks? Go on! I've gotta see how the Elite Four handle you. Thank goodness this place has simulcasting! Rrrrrright. Okay, moving on, then. Are you sure we're ready? We can always go train a bit more, if you're not sure! This time will not come again. Not a chance...
...there's no turning back now.

Strap in, folks. It's like Manic says: there's no turning back now!
So, one might wonder. Varas says all the trainers that were on Victory Road are back home with no memory of ever having been there at all.
How?

Update #26: Gauntlet - vs. Will, Koga, Bruno
Oh! Um, thank you, sir. Sir? Don't you remember me? Uhmmm... Will? I trained you! You seriously don't remember? I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding. I'll say there is! You're Manic, right? I taught you everything you know! Look, I'm a Manic, but I'm not the Manic you know. Wait, wait, I heard about this from the guys upstairs. Your pokemon have been vani- wait a minute... You guessed it! I'm from the other world. I'm afraid we've never met before. Then he's...? Oh! No! Not like that. We switch back and forth. Right about now, he's fighting my world's Will. I see. Then you want to face me without the benefit of any formal training? I have to, sir. I think there's something only I can do, but I'm going to have to get past Lance to do it. Hmm. I see. You know, you're not that dissimilar from the Manic I know. I'm not? No, not in the important ways. You know what the last thing he said to me before he left for home was?
Oh. Well, I've never quite said anything like that. Nonsense! You're motivated, sincere, and unwilling to back down. Right? He's got a point. Arceus preserve me, is that Lana?! You know her? Know her? I helped hatch her before I gave her to Elm! I don't remember that. You look confused. I'm not surprised, you were very young when I left you. Anyway, you know I can't let you past without a fight, right? Of course! Are you ready, then? Ready as I'm going to be!
Will of the Elite Four, I challenge you! Very nice! It's almost as if I had trained you. But enough talk. Have at you!
Madness is the act of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.
Sending out grass and ice pokemon against someone you know has a Typhlosion? Really?
Amnesia all you like, that won't help you against me! A Scizor! Remarkably fortunate catch, there. Tell me about it!
Wow, you sound a lot like... The ginger kid who keeps hanging around Victory Road? Yeah, I met him when I was out for a walk one day. You did? And you survived? Not by much! He just kept prattling on about you. Only about you, and how he had to beat you! That sure sounds like Varas, all right. Listen, Will...Varas is dangerous. He doesn't care about anyone or anything but himself, including this war. Be on your guard, okay? I'll take that advice, sure! Now, go on to the others, but rest assured: they won't be as easy on you as I was! Okay! It was nice meeting you, Will! Are we done making nice-nice now? Can we go on to stomp some heads? Easy, lady, easy! We'll get our time in the sun.
GAH! Ha-ha! You have beaten Will, but now you face me, a true warrior of the mystical arts! Ha-ha! How do you do that? Do what? I do not understand what you are talking about! Your lips. They...don't match up to what you're saying. Already, my clever machinations have you off your guard, ha-ha! You cannot stand before me! ...is this some kind of joke? A MORTAL WITH PRETENSIONS OF POWER. WHAT A NOVEL CONCEPT.
Augh! Get back! What the hell? He's attackin'! Of course he is, he's a gym leader. Eyes front, gorgeous! I don't mean his pokemon, I mean HE'S ATTACKIN'! Hey! Hands off my trainer, you otaku freakshow!
He keeps setting them up, I keep knocking them down! How's it going back there? In the end, our minds are our best weapons. Hey! Put Lucky down! He's a pokemon, not a projectile! Manic, get down! It's no good! He's like greased lightning! Nobody can move this fast! Wait a minute...Lilly! Take over for me! About damn time!
Man, this guy's not messin' around! Manic, listen closely to me! *whisperwhisper* What? How is that even possible? Exactly! Oh, I get it!
Hey! Koga! Yes? What is it, challenger? Do you admit defeat, ha-ha? So, turns out that ten years ago, Koga offed himself after facing my namesake. Referencing...yes, this is true! What of it? So if Koga is dead, then who the hell are you?
Koga is dead, but I am Koga, but Koga died ten years ago, but I exist, but- If you're Koga, and Koga is dead, act like it! POWERING...DOWN. Whew! I don't think any of us could withstand much more of that. Good job, everyone! Except you, you useless...thing! NO. STOP. DON'T HURT MY TRAINER. THERE, ARE YOU SATISFIED? You worthless- Ah, let it go, Molly. It's probably more than we should expect anyway. A robo-Koga. Freaky! Seriously. Anyway, let's just get everyone healed and go.
Whoah. This guy must chug Creatine like Ovaltine! Manic. That's me.
Why are you here? Er...to challenge Lance? That is one answer. Now, give me the real one. Why are you here? I'm afraid that's the only answer I have. I see. Then you have no real hope of defeating me. I've done okay so far! You've defeated Will, so you must have a grasp of the basics. You've defeated Koga, so you must be reasonably clever. Me? I'm in an entirely different league. There are different leagues?! What? No, no. What I mean to say is, my power vastly exceeds theirs. My pokemon and I train in the blistering heat for hours every day, improving our stamina and strength, even our speed!
How do you keep from dying of heat stroke? A regular training regimen, and drinking lots of water. Or, in the case of some of my pokemon, regular patch jobs. Patch jobs? I don't get it. Oh, you will. You see, I'm aware that you intend to stand up to Lance, but you can't just walk up to the commander-in-chief and demand an audience. It doesn't work like that. Actually, I'm pretty sure it does...I defeat the Elite Four, then I face the Champion. That's how this works, isn't it?
Are we even having the same conversation at this point? If you can't handle me, Lance will squash you like a bug! You have the fundamentals and the intelligence, but do you have the raw power required to take on the Champion? If not, we'll find out right now! Well, I guess there's nothing for it. Everybody ready?
Wait. Stop! Stop the fight. ...what?
Did you just hoo-hah me? Come again? I think you just hoo-hahed me. Oh, that thing I said, just before the fight? Yeah. That. Yeah, that's sort of my battle cry. Your battle cry is 'hoo-hah'? Sure, what's wrong with that? It gets me pumped up and ready for battle! Oh, nothing! Nothing. I'm sure it's, uh, useful? Sort of. Oh yeah? Well, what would you say? There are, like, a million possibilities! Anything from 'For the horde!' to 'By the power of Greyskull!' to 'Yo, Joe!' or...well, anything! But seriously, 'hoo-hah'? It's military! It's ridiculous, is what it is. Okay, now I'm mad!
Come at me, bro! Come at... Can I use that? No.
The sea is a source of infinite pressure. It erodes all-ow... Sheesh, this thing is like a living blender! You did your damage, Lucky. Molly, help out, will you? Ow! That hurt, you little creep! Yeah, but we got it. Well done, Molly! You're too soft on your team! You haven't got a prayer of beating me! Hitmonlee, kick them in half!
Yo yo yo, what it is, my jive suckas? Why you gosta be steppin'? You bes' come correct! Eeeeeugh. Let's not do that, okay, Lucky? Hah! Trouble, challenger? Time for you to earn your keep, Anemoi. I SEE. YOU'RE GOING TO LEVEL THE POWER OF A GOD AT THIS LEAGUE THING. WHY NOT JUST BOMB IT FROM ORBIT? IT WOULD BE FASTER. Just hit the damn thing.
What the tapdancing fuck is that?! Oh, that's just Anemoi. You probably know of it as Lugia. It's a Psychic/Flying type! A PSYCHIC/FLYING TYPE WITH A GREAT DEAL OF FRUSTRATION TO VENT. Oh, hell...
Damn it all to hell. I suppose I should just give- Okay, Lucky. Your turn again! Really? What, you thought I was just going to bulldoze you with a legendary pokemon? Well...yes! Anemoi has an enormous debt to pay off, but I'm not going to use it as a sledgehammer to bust the doors down. Oh. Well, um, thanks? Don't thank me yet.
For a nail, a hammer. For a screw, a screwdriver. For an Onix, a Surf. I see I'm going to need to get a bit more strategic. Let's see how you handle this kind of coverage! Get 'em, Hitmonchan! Okay, Lana. Looks like you're up! Your Typhlosion? I studied elemental punches in school. Fire, Ice, and Electric, right? Well...yes. And Bullet. Why? Even better! Only one of those won't come through weakened. What? Let's see here. Fire, right...ice...steel...damn it! Oh, now this is going to be fun!
Really, Hitmonchan? Really?! Wow! Has that ever burned before? First time! Not even once? Oh, just finish it already!
If you say so. Okay, okay, you wound up working through the rest of my pokemon. Good job. Now it's time to bring out my ace! Hmmm? Well, if we're getting serious again...
YES, YOUR SINGLE ATTACK WAS ENTHRALLING. CAN I GO BACK TO MY POKEBA- *pchoo* Yes.
But...I have to know. Suppose you do overthrow Lance. What then? I'll answer your question if you answer mine. All right? What's an Elite Four member from the Kanto league doing here? ...just go.

First part of the Elite Four down! Turns out Will and Manic knew each other before all of this! Well, one Manic.
Anybody catch the reference of where I got Koga's speech patterns? Also, hoo-hah.
And yeah, it's not Manic's style to use Anemoi as a cudgel to get though the E4. He's a bit nerdier, sure, but dedicated to good sportsmanship!

Speaking of Anemoi, I love him. He's an asshole, but he's also hilarious, and picturing his voice as Alan Rickman's Snape makes it all the better. (Was that you who said that such a voice would be fitting? I don't recall.)

Update #27: Face-Off: vs. Karen, Lance
Huh? Me? Why? Don't think I haven't noticed you sulking back there. I ain't sulkin'! I'm just not on these guys' levels. Let's put it to a vote. I say you were sulking. Sulking! Slaking! I mean, sulking! The matter is unimportant. THE AMBULATORY DOILY AND I AGREE. THESE ARE THE END TIMES. So that's three 'yes', two 'doesn't care', and one no. Sorry, Jack. You're outvoted. I wanna recount! Anyway, with that thing, all you have to be is fast. You can be fast, right? Hell yeah, I can! Well then, show me!
Entertain you? What is this, some kind of joke to you? Of course, dear boy. All of life is a grand joke, and we're all the punchline. What does that even mean? I've heard of you. Walking between worlds, sending your pokemon to do the same. Stealing hope from a region, then giving it back. It's all a balancing act, except that it never quite balances, does it? Lady, looks ta me like you're the unbalanced one! I have to agree with Jack on this one, Karen. You might have been here a little too long. Oh, not at all, dear boy. You see, I'm not afraid of the dark. The shadows are my allies, concealing me from view. Well, you can't hide from me! Karen of the Elite F- Let's just dispense with the formalities, hmm? I'm bored already.
You know what the song says: if you're bored, then you're boring! Oh, you like music, do you? Well, how about this: we are ready for the siege. We are armed up to the teeth!
Huh? Sorry, I couldn't hear you over the sound of your team being crap. Come on, they weren't that bad. That Vileplume put up a bit of a fight! True power lies in the hands of those with the will to use it. YES, SEND YOUR PSYCHIC TYPES AGAINST THE DARK TYPE TRAINER. HOW ABSOLUTELY AVANT-GARDE. NO, WAIT. THE OTHER THING. IDIOTIC. Blah blah blah. It worked, didn't it? YES. YOU'RE WELCOME.
What a hypocrite. What do you mean? There was no passion in your fighting, Karen. That was mechanical and dull! How dare you?! I'm a master performer! I almost fell asleep! I feel ripped off. You...you vile little... You need to start taking your challengers a little more seriously. Anemoi may be a jerk, but he's right: I just beat you with two psychic types. Passion...you think I need passion...something to get the blood pumping?! That, or supply No-Doz to your opponents.
I'll start thinking of ways to make this more...fun. Heh heh... Ooookay. Nuttier than an Exeggutor's ballsac! And there's a visual I didn't need. Hey, I'm just saying- YES. Yes, we heard you! Let's not just say anymore, and go fight Lance, okay? It's time to get our game faces on.
Hey. hey, Manic. You okay? Y-yeah! Sure. Nothing's wrong. I deal solely in truths. I don't believe you, Manic. You look white as a Castform. Don't sweat it! I'm sure we'll be fine. We can definitely win here, right? I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm really nervous. I mean, we're in the Champion's room! This is the big show! Almost nobody gets here! Lance is amazingly powerf- Not helping! It's okay. I'm pretty nervous too. If you had told me I'd be facing down the Commander-In-Chief someday, I never would've believed you. I think everybody's a little spooked, Manic. What're you gonna do about it?
Plan as best as I can, and let the chips fall where they may. How do you always have Rare Candies? Well, we do find them every so often. I just save them for when the situation warrants it. I'm thinking this qualifies. Lance is no joke! Listen, everyone.
Lance is extraordinarily powerful. He doesn't fool around. There's a chance that some of us might not walk away from this one. I just wanted all of you to know that...come what may, even if we should lose, it's been an honor and a privilege to fight beside you. Awww, that's sweet! It's been good to fight with you too, Manic! OR IT WOULD, IF YOU EVER FOUGHT BESIDE US. INSTEAD, YOU STAND BACK AND BARK ORDERS AT US LIKE A DEMENTED COXSWAIN IN A LEAKY ROWBOAT. *snicker* Coxswain. Oh, shut up, you big baby. Manic works just as hard as any of us, just in different ways! MORTAL, YOU ARE TESTING MY PATIENCE! IF YOU AREN'T CAREFUL, I'LL- Kindly stuff your wings into your word-hole. I'm trying to concentrate. WHA-...I... Wow, Lucky. I never knew you had it in you! There is much you do not know about me.
Lance. Manic. Which one, though, I wonder... Not the one from this world. Is that why you care so little about us? You have me all wrong! I care a lot about this world! That's why I'm here! Explain. I knew once I saw what was east of New Bark that I had to find you. I have to go to Kanto. Are you defecting, then? No! I don't even think it's possible for me to defect, since I'm not one of your agents...anyway. I need you to listen to my plan. It's not a secret, then? Very well. Continue.
Lance, I'm from a different version of Johto. In my home world, Johto and Kanto aren't at war, and never have been. I see. How did this come to be? Supposedly, in this world, my namesake defeated Gary Oak and Mewtwo. Right? Yes, approximately ten years ago. And then he vanished, leaving a power vacuum for Genwyn to occupy. Genwyn is the one who started this war. Right? Correct. I see you've caught up well on our history. What's your point? Sir, in my home world, there was never a Manic...er, aside from me. Gary Oak is alive and well, as is Mewtwo. Then Professor Oak is alive as well... What? Professor Oak is alive. I just spoke to him on the phone not long ago! Never mind that. What does this have to do with going to Kanto? This war you're in with Kanto. You're losing, aren't you? Ridiculous! Our war effort is as strong as ever. What makes you say that?
Sir, in my home world, routes 26 and 27 are still part of Johto. In this world, Kanto has overtaken them.
...very well. I concede the point. All the revisionist history in the world won't change that. What's your plan? Genwyn started this war. She, or he, or whatever...they made this happen. All this death, all this pain. It's lamentable, I don't deny it. What's your point? I have to go to Kanto, sir. I have to stop Genwyn. I'm afraid I can't allow that. Sir...I'm so sorry, but with all due respect, I can't take no for an answer. I see.
If you can defeat me, you will be the champion, and you may have passage to Kanto. Know this, though: I believe that your action will inspire a counterattack of unparalleled proportions. I must stop you here. I will hold nothing back. I wouldn't expect anything less. I can't believe I'm actually challenging the champion! Hmm. You look positively giddy. I've dreamed all of this all my life. The circumstances are bad, but...here I am! Very well then. If you would begin? Lance, Champion of Johto! I, Manic, challenge you for the championship!
I take no great pleasure in this, Manic...but for the good of Johto, you must fall! I take vast pleasure in this, Lance. For the good of Johto and Kanto alike, I must succeed!
Lucky! Here, take my Pokegear! What are you doing? Understood. I will use the energy you have provided! What?! A one-shot?! I don't get it! How? Hah! Nice! Lucky siphoned the power from the Pokegear and added it to his attack! Rrrgh...clever tactic, but it won't stop me. Time for the triple-threat!
Lucky! The Nevermeltice! Yes, I have it equipped. Anyone can see that. Eat it! Do what now? Do what now? Eat the Nevermeltice! Just trust me on this! I will no longer have the item if I do that. Is that even possible?!
Ohhh, I get it! Hee hee! Lucky! Do it! HOLY...! Okay, that? Was straight-up freaky. What the hell? As I suspected, the inherent frigidity of the ice temporarily interacted with Lucky's water typing. ...buh? Don't you get it? For a minute there, Lucky was an Ice type! Bingo. Which gave Ice Beam the STAB bonus! Well, now you've used up your advantage! Time for my Aerodactyl to show you its speed!
Hey, yeah, wow, that's really fast. BYE! Sweet Arceus, your Golem ripped the floor up and turned it into a wall! Lilly is incredibly powerful, Lance. This is just an example! Oh, you! It's true, though. I can't let you win! If you do as you please, Johto will be destroyed! Charizard, you're our last hope! Uhm, Lance...not to nitpick or anything, but you do realize that half your team isn't actually dragons, right? I work with what I can get. Now, fight me!
Lana, what- You know, all my life, I've heard people talking about Charizards. Charizard is so this, Charizard can do that, Charizard is the best thing ever. Well, big guy, let me show you how we roll in Johto! Lana, chill! C'mon, this guy ain't no thing! You might wanna stand back, Jack. This is gonna get messy. Hmph. You may have a powerful team, but Charizard is amazingly powerful. Not a single one of your team has the power to stand up to him! EXCUSE ME. Hey, what're you doing with Lana's pokeball?!
HELLO, MORTAL. MY NAME IS LUGIA, AND I'M A GOD. AN ACTUAL, HONEST-TO-GOODNESS GOD. IT MAY BE AGAINST MY WILL, BUT FOR THE MOMENT, I'M ON THIS FOOL'S TEAM. NOW, WHAT WERE YOU SAYING ABOUT NOT HAVING ENOUGH POWER TO STAND UP TO YOUR FIRE-LIZARD?
THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT, BITCH.
I've...failed. Johto is doomed. No, Lance. I think we can save Johto, but not the way you've been trying. Okay? No more 'secret weapons', no more wars of attrition. And your plan is an assassination? ...um... You do realize that Genwyn won't stop for anything less, correct? I'll...I'll cross that bridge when I come to it! I doubt you have the strength necessary to kill a human. Maybe not...but I think I know someone who does. Then maybe, just maybe, you might be our last real hope.
As a Champion, you have access to Johto's resources, strained as they may be. You understand the chance I'm taking, yes? If you fail, the counterattack will probably take out half of the region, including your hometown. Do you have a better idea? ...no. Not really. Then I suggest we focus all of our efforts on this surgical strike. Yes, let's - wait, intruders? But how?
Oak. I'm glad you approve. Sensors indicate that your power has increased tenfold since our prior meeting. This is most pleasing! Right! Um, listen. We need to go get me inducted into the Hall of Fame, so do you think you could wait out here for a little bit? Certainly! Enough charge remains for 31 hours, 20 minutes.
Yeah, I think so. We have work to do, you and I.
Your home world sounds like a utopia. It's not. Things are different there. People are different there. How so? Well...for example, in the other world, I have a Dratini. Okay. The other you kidnapped that Dratini's father, and is probably forcing her to fight him at this very moment. What? What kind of monster does that? The other version of you isn't exactly an honorable man. I hope the other version of me is playing it safe. This is really confusing, you know. Try living it.
Sounds like a good idea. Um, just one request. Hmm? Any chance you could register my Lugia as 'Dickbutt'? THANK YOU, I SOMETIMES FORGET THAT YOU'RE A CHILD. *snrk* Tempting, but no. Sorry, official names only. Can't blame a guy for trying.
Fame is a fleeting thing, ephemeral and capricious. True power lies in knowledge. Screw that, check me out! I'm a friggin' Hall of Famer over here! I'm...I'm so happy, I think I'm going to cry! *snf* Reel it back, there's lots more butt to kick! HMPH. ABOUT TIME I WAS PROPERLY REVERED. PERHAPS I WON'T END THE WORLD IN A CATACLYSM AFTER ALL. Eat a dick, Anemoi.
Simply stunning...breathtaking. It's everything I thought it would be... MANIC! WHAT IS THAT?
ANOMALY DETECTED. W: ...can you hear me?! P: ...the hell?! Hey, I know that voice! Whatever you're gonna do, you better do it quick! It's Ma-a-a-anic! With...the other team! That's your other team?! W: Listen, we don't have much time! Defeating Lance in both worlds has created a convergence, we have to take advantage of it while we can! P: Convergence? I don't understand! What are you talking about?!
W: Curtis! How long do we have? Figure, 'bout five minutes, give or take! P: How long to what? Listen, other-me, what is it we're supposed to do?! W: If you really are me, then you're gonna love this one:
W: Let's mess with the program! P: Now you're talking! Now, let's see here...

Update #28: Nautical
Whew. What a day. I'm still pleased to discover that the worlds can interact. Yeah, it's a dream come true. Where to now? Thank you for not sending me over, Manic! What, and break up the teams? I wouldn't dream of it. You're right where I need you. I gotta admit, I was worried for a sec! And you're right where Lana needs you. Ah, g'wan. Manic! AND WHY DID YOU KEEP ME, OF ALL POKEMON? Because you're my burden, not his. A convergence of worlds...if only I had been able to study it longer. Who knows? Maybe you'll get another chance. I don't know how this stuff works. All I know is, we have work to do.
GAH! Hello, mis- er, mom... It's all right, dear. My Manic told me all about it. Oh, uhm. I guess this is a little awkward, huh? Oh, don't worry yourself about it! Come, have some breakfast before you go. Breakfast? Certainly! It should be done in just a few minutes. Sit down at the table and get comfortable. Oh, uh...thanks... Here you are! Pancakes and bacon and sausage. Breakfast of champions! ... Is something wrong, dear? I just...I wish...I don't know. What is it? When all of this is over, I wonder if I'll go back to my world. With the mother I know. I really don't know, I'm afraid. If you can still come here, you're welcome any time. I wish you were my mother. What's that? Nothing, nothing. Thank you for the breakfast!
So I heard. Thanks in advance! Very odd. You're quite different from the Manic I know. How so? Well, you're more respectful. More polite. I'm not sure I understand. For example, the other one just calls me Elm. I think I understand why. Hmmm? He's the same age as me, but he grew up in a war-torn version of the world. More than that, his home is on the cusp of being overrun. It's got to be incredibly stressful. I grew up wanting to be champion, wanting to undertake a grand adventure...he grew up not wanting to die. Then you believe that the world in which he grew up has changed him? Doesn't it change all of us? I see...well, on to happier topics.
So Lance really did come through. Was there ever any doubt? A little. Getting into Kanto from Johto must be rough! That brings me to my next point. DO NOT lose that ticket. It is the only one we can get. As it stands, we have no idea how you're going to get past the security checkpoints. I hope you have a plan, Manic; your mission is critical to the survival of Johto as a region.
Manic? Are you all right? Hmmm? Yeah, I'm just a little nervous, is all. There's a lot riding on this. Ah, finally, an agent. Report, Lana. There really isn't much to tell aside from what I've already reported. Ah, except that both I and my other world counterpart seem to be immune to transfer, for reasons I haven't discerned. I don't get it. Why can he understand her? I was once registered to Professor Elm as his pokemon. It takes some time for the understanding to dwindle. Learn something new every day...well, I guess we should be going. I ASSUME THAT I'M TO BE USED FOR MENIAL LABOR YET AGAIN. Ah, yes, your Lugia! Manic, I'd love to study it sometime, if you wouldn't mind. AND I'D LOVE TO THROW YOU THROUGH THE WINDOW. UNFORTUNATELY, WE CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT WE WANT. Anemoi says it'd be delighted to cooperate in any way you'd like. I HATE YOU.
Manic, stop. Hmmm? Once we leave Johto, I won't be of much use to you in the realm of local knowledge. We won't have any of the local badges, and we won't know where anything is. Right. Are you sure you're ready for this? ...you want the honest truth? Nah, she wants you to blow smoke at her. 'Course she wants the truth! No. I'm not ready. I can't possibly be ready. I've never been to Kanto before, especially not this one. I have no idea what's ahead of us, but I made a promise. We have to do this. Nothing is truly required. He's right, babe. We've gotta head over there an' shut this Genwyn guy...uh, chick...or whatever...down. 'Babe'? Er, uh, Lana! Sorry.
Oak? What are you doing here? ASSIGNMENT: Update Manic's pokedex. What? What's wrong with how it is now? Sensors do not indicate any flaw with your pokedex! Please relinquish the device. Um, okay.
National Mode? Your pokedex has been upgraded to accommodate pokemon from every region! Every region? Wow! Every region except Unova. ...why not that one? Communications with that region have been cut off. Why? Cause: Unknown.
Pallet Town...Oak's lab? Oh, wow. That's mean. What is? I'm pretty sure you've realized by now that you weren't just talking to Professor Oak. It's a little obvious, yes. What's mean, though? Looks like th' guy thinks he's the real deal. Exactly. He seems to have been programmed with Oak's memories. Oh, I get it. So if he ever finds out... He never will, because we'll never tell him. Then he doesn't know about his grandson, or any of that! It's so sad! War is hell, I think.
Certainly, here you go. Business or pleasure? Business. What sort? Pokemon trading. Contraband? No, no. It's sanctioned by the champion. See? Hmmm. Your documentation seems to be in order.
Thank you very much. How'd you do that? Oh, it's easy. I just downloaded the paperwork with my Pokegear, printed it out, and signed it. Ahhhh, heh heh! You cheeky bastard! I don't get it. How did you get the champion to sanction it? Well, I had to talk myself into it, but it turned out that I believed I had a valid cause. So, on the condition that I didn't embarrass me, I signed the paperwork, gave it to myself, and wished myself good luck. Limber linguistics. ARCEUS PRESERVE ME. HE'S THE CHAMPION NOW, YOU WALKING CAN OPENER. HE CAN SANCTION ANYTH- *pchoo* That's quite enough of that. Let's board!
Hmmm. Nice boat! I'm on a boat, on a boat- Can we not do that? Huh? Yeah, sorry 'bout that. Hee hee! Can't catch me! Huh-OW! Whoops! Sorry, mister! People really need to watch their kids. Human larva always creeps me out. AHEM. What? You're not a larva anymore. To remain analogous, you would currently be a pupa. And other things I'd rather not talk about!
The little girl? I think I saw her run off that way. Oh, thank goodness! She didn't run into you, did she? She did! She's small, though. Oh, um. Okay. Well. I should go catch her! Okay, good luck! Psst. Manic. Keep cool. Huh? The kid's not the only thing that's missing! What do you- hey, wh- Play it cool! Nobody knows anything's wrong yet. Keep calm and search the boat. Five'll getcha ten the rugrat has it. ...right. Right, good point.
Don't I already have all my catches from the Safari Zone? Sure, but you can help me test out this new object arrangement idea I have! Er, as much as I'd love to, I really can't. What, you're going to turn me away? How rude! I'm not even in Johto anymore! Come again? I'm on a boat in foreign waters. I mean, I literally can't help you! Oh. Well, if you change your mind, stop by! I'll try.
Oh, also, a word of warning: there are trainers on board who love to fight. Why can't people just relax and enjoy a nice cruise? I know, right? Wait. You agree with me? Sure! Not everything has to be combat this and training that. Finally, a sane person! Agreed. Pansy. Lilly! What? I'm just saying. Anyway, we'll check the cabin later. For now, we have a little girl to find.
Oh, um, we're looking for a little girl. And I'm looking for the guy who's supposed to take my spot. Can we help you look for him after we find the girl? Nope. I'm pretty sure she got past me, slippery little eel, but I can't let anybody through on purpose. Follow me? I'LL SIMPLY THROW HIM INTO THE OCEAN. What? No! What's wrong with you? Do I even want to know? Probably not. Fine, we'll go find your friend. What's his name?
Stanly. What's he look like? A little on the round side, wears a sailor's uniform. ...you just described every employee on this ship. Snores. I don't even want to know how you know that. Indignant jackass. That's a personality trait, that won't help me find him. I wasn't talking about him. Hey! Just find some sailor sleeping on the job. He's the only one who does.
(So we found and squashed him. Ain't no thing.)
This place has serious communication issues.
Excuse me, little girl? Captain: Oh, praise Arceus. Young man, I will give you just about anything you want if you'll play with this little girl. Somewhere ELSE. Just a moment, sir. Little girl, do you remember bumping into me upstairs? Girl: Uh huh! That's good! That's very good. Now, did you happen to pick up a slip of paper? Girl: Nuh uh! ...you're sure? That's not a good sign.
What? Little girl, I need to- Girl: Close them, or I'll cry! Ah, she's bluffing. I dunno, Lilly. Aw, I wish I could talk to her. Hello, little girl! Girl: *sniffle* Okay! Okay. They're closed. Girl: Okay! Now you have to catch me! Wheeeee! ... Captain: She swiped your ticket, didn't she. Er, uhm... Captain: It's fine. I won't throw you off or anything. Just go catch her, and we'll pretend it never happened. If you want, you can hog-tie her, I won't mind.
Hee-hee! That was fun! Why, I oughtta... Fun is such a relative term. I think you might need to crack down a bit. It's okay, I've got this. Let's play another game! That sure was fun, wasn't it? But I wonder if you could do something for me? Ummmmmmm...okay! I had a little grey piece of paper with some writing on it. I really really really need that back, or they won't let me play anymore! Oh, you mean this? That's the one! May I please have it back? Okay! Smooth!
Sure did! We made friends, didn't we? Girl: Uh huh! He's a nice boy! Grandfather: I certainly hope she wasn't any trouble. Trouble? Not at all! She was a perfect angel. The hell you say! Be nice! She's just little, is all! Grandfather: Ha! You're a kind boy and a terrible liar. Here, take this Metal Coat as repayment. Oh! Um, well, okay. Thanks!
Grandfather: Ah, and just in time, too. Will you be staying long in Kanto? Hmm? Oh, no, just taking care of some business before I head back. Girl: Can we play again sometime? Heh heh. Sure thing, if we see each other again! Girl: Yaaaaaaay! Okay, everyone. Off the boat!
Arright, sound off if you think that was adorable. Me! I wish I had a camera! Me. I had no idea you were so good with children! They're not that different from you or me, Lana. They just have worse impulse control. Ehhh, yeah, okay. I guess it was cute. I don't understand the question. I HONESTLY DIDN'T THINK I COULD BECOME MORE NAUSEATED. YOU'VE PROVEN ME WRONG. All right, all right. Serious business time; let's head into Kanto proper!
Ah, hell! Oh, it's Suicune! SUICUNE! IT'S ME! HELP ME OUT OF THIS! BLAST THIS TRAINER INTO HIS OWN PERSONAL ICE AGE! LUGIA. I SEE YOU'VE FINALLY GOTTEN YOURSELF IN OVER YOUR HEAD. STOP GLOATING AND HELP ME! THIS MORTAL HAS CAPTURED ME! I AM NOT HERE FOR YOU, LUGIA. LISTEN TO ME, GEMINI CHILD. I- Suicune! I know it's you, I can hear you! OH, SON OF A BITCH...
Corner? Suicune? Well, yes. Haven't we had this conversation before? Er...no? But- ah, you must be the alter-ego! Or is he? My boy, you are not in your native world. Here, YOU are the alter-ego. Seriously, how does he do this? Do what? I don't understand. I mean, I know he's speaking English, right? Okay? And yet, every word that comes out of his mouth sounds like, "Punch me, Lilly. Punch me in the face. I deserve it so much. Punch me!" It's uncanny! You really need to switch to decaf.
...yes, yes it does. You thought you could withhold that information from me, hmmm? Actually, I sort of figured it was...uhm. Incredibly obvious. Wh- well, of course it is! I was taking stock of your mental faculties. Oh, clearly! I'll be keeping an eye on you. Champion or no, you're still a potential danger. For now, farewell!
Was it just me, or was that completely pointless? If it's just you, then it's just both of us.
Oh, hey! Looks like we've officially entered our first town in Kan-
-to.
You don't say.

Sooo. Why exactly do we go chasing after the little girl on the ship? Because she swiped our ticket, that's why!
Why doesn't Suicune at least try to talk to Manic? Because Eusine, that's why!
And who did we transfer from the immediate team? Turns out, nobody! Everybody has their place where they are, for assorted reasons.

This part is easily my favorite dialogue in the entire run.

After the 'Genius' face meme, I feel like the end of that update was a missed opportunity for some Nick Cage if you catch my drift. XD

Update #29: Tension - vs. Lt. Surge
I sorta figured that was obvious, to be honest. No, I mean, really strong. How strong is 'really' strong? Lt. Surge, the leader here? Starts at level 47 and goes up from there. ARCEUS! That's as strong as Lance! I know, right? It's a good thing the regions get along; Kanto would wipe the floor with Johto! Aheh...yeah! Good thing. Too easy. It is kuh-kinda a lob...
What is that? I think it's asleep! Farrah, could you roll him over for me? We need to get by. Sure, just give me a...HNNNNGH...moment... Hang on, lemme help...hnnnnf!...what's this guy made of, lead?! Curtis, can you...Curtis? Huh? Oh, yeah. Sorry. Reminds me of Creosote... Everybody PUSH! [It's no use, Ma-a-a-anic. It's like trying to move Kanto itself! I guess we come back later, then...
Oh, um... Just say you did, he won't know any better. ...actually, sir, no. You didn't? I think he blew it... No, sir. I'm just a traveler. Do you have any idea who I am? The...fan club president? That's right! Most people are willing to sit and let me prattle for ages, but you? You're bold enough to tell me the truth! I like you, boy. Here, have some candy!
Oh! Well, thank you! Not at all! Feel free to drop by so we can have a conversation about our pokemon someday. Sure thing! I'd love for you to meet the team properly. For now, though... Yes, of course. For now, you must be on your way. Travel safely! Thank you! Did that really just happen? Sometimes, an awkward truth is better than an easy lie.
Oh, um, all right. What kind of problem? Beats me, but nothing's working. ...nothing? Well, we've got the basics, light, heat, things like that...but have you tried your pokegear radio lately? Seen the Magnet Train? Well, no, to be honest. Don't bother. They won't work until this power plant issue is fixed! Well then! I know what our first step is.
Saffron City...I think I've heard of that. Oh? Do tell. I've heard that Goldenrod is what happens if you smoosh Saffron and...Celadon? together. Celadon, you say. Well, there's a sudden change in mood. Are you okay? I'd rather like to visit Celadon, I think.
Well, that should be-
-simple-
-enough? Huh? I don't know how I missed that. Oh yeah! New town, swap Manics! TRADING ONE JAILOR FOR ANOTHER. DELIGHTFUL. Was this a deliberate swap? No, I pulled a stupid...I just didn't think Saffron would be so close! For real, I barely got my paws on the ground, and bam! New town! Well, I guess we might as well have a look around. Right?
She sounds lonely. She is. She spends most of her time in her room. Maybe I could pay her a visit. Could you? Any time her father and I try to talk to her, she just mimics us until we leave. Manic, are you sure you're qualified for this? She's a child, Lana. People are all fundamentally the same, really. I have to try, if nothing else! Awwww, you're sweet! Boy scout Manic may be happier, but he's kind of annoying.
... Hello? ... Um... Are you done? Are you done? ... ...okay, okay. It's no fun copying anyone who doesn't do anything! You know, I bet you'd have more friends if you'd just be yourself instead of trying to be them. Step off. You do things your way, I'll do them mine. Right! Okay then. We're out.
'Currently out of service. Please try again later.'
Oh, hey, neat! A fighting dojo! What's that next door, then? This city must have...two gyms! I think that's a first! I ain't real happy about either of 'em! Okay, let's plan. Lilly and Jack, you keep clear. Lucky, you and Anemoi will be up front, with Molly bringing up the rear. Lana, you're backup. FINALLY, SOME SLACK-JAWED MORONS I'M ALLOWED TO PUMMEL. What're you on about? You've been allowed to beat on almost every opponent we've found. AND YET, THE HOLY GRAIL OF BEATINGS CONTINUES TO ELUDE ME. I don't follow. THERE HAVE BEEN SIX IDIOTS VERY CLOSE TO ME THAT I'D LIKE VERY MUCH TO RUIN, BUT I SUPPOSE THAT WILL REMAIN A GOAL FOR NOW. Whatever. Okay, team, let's go in!
A RUN-DOWN HOVEL WITH NARY A TRAINER IN SIGHT. OH, I DO HOPE I'M UP TO THE CHALLENGE. Oh, shut up.
Sorry, kid. No luck. The elevator's got no power. ...so both worlds have an issue with it... Say what? Nothing, nothing. So, this is Silph Co.? These people make all the gear I've been using? That's right! Best in the tri-region area. I'll have to stop by and pay my respects sometime once the power is on. That's decent of you. Where are you from? Oh, Johto. What?! Easy, easy! I have special dispensation from the champion. Diplomatic immunity. I'm not here to cause trouble. You'd better not. I'd better phone this in... Well, it was nice meeting you. Goodbye!
And you're just...giving them out? Not to just anyone, but they don't call me Mr. Psychic for the TM. There's something unusual about you. I don't know what you mean. I'm just here for a trading session, then back home for me! You're a very poor liar...Manic, is it? Oh poop. Intriguing. Ten years ago...hmmm. You were never here, Manic. I saw nothing. Thank you, but why are you helping me? I think you might just have the power to change the world.
Manic... Hmm? What's up? Look, I don't mean to tell you your business, but you're going to switch out the moment you set foot in there. Right? I suppose so, yes. Why? I think I'll let her tell you. Manic. Lilly. There's an electric type gym back there. I. AM. A. GOLEM. Oh, uh, right! I suppose you are. We haven't fought once since we got here. If you don't let me go bust some heads... Right! Got it. Understood. Please don't hurt me. I'm glad we had this little talk.
Hey, Manic. Hmmm? Izzit me, or is Lilly more punchy than usual? Well, we haven't been in a fight since the championship. Maybe she's just bored. Ehhhhhh...I dunno. Maybe. You think something's bugging her? I dunno, man. You didn't hear me say it, but she's looking really skittish lately. Like, ever since we got here. I hope this helps her work her nerves out, or whatever. I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks, Jack. Ah, it ain't no thing.
How convenient!
How annoying. So, what do I have to do? At the bottom of one of those barrels, there's a switch. Flip it, and flip the switch right next to it, and the traps will be disabled! The barrels? Yeah, but don't get the wrong neighbor, or they reset! Okay, well, let's get...started...what's that smell?
I can't believe we're having to dig through trash to reach these things! Nobody ever said the life of an agent would be glamorous. But I'm not a- AHEM. Er, right. But I'm not one! I'm interested in challenges and adventures! You kiddin'? Each one of these barrels tells a hundred stories! All sorts of lives went into these! THE RATICATE FINDS MEANING IN GARBAGE. WHAT A SHOCK. Come over here and say that! Wait, wait, I found one! Okay, so the next one-
Gahhh! AS AMUSING AS IT IS WATCHING YOU MISERABLY RIFLING THROUGH GARBAGE, YOU HAVE PERHAPS FIVE MINUTES BEFORE I GET BORED AND DISABLE THE TRAPS MY WAY. Do I even want to know? OH, LET IT BE A SURPRISE. Sheesh! Okay, everybody, time to hurry it up! Whatever Anemoi's surprise is, I'm pretty sure we don't want any!
Found it! You know, you're not half-bad at this. Manic. Molly? I need a bath. Right now. But we just- I am covered in wrappers, rotten food, and Arceus-only-knows-what. Bath. NOW. Okay, okay. I think we could all use a clean-up. A CLUSTER OF MORTAL FOOLS COVERED IN, AND REVOLTED BY, THEIR OWN FILTH. AND HERE I THOUGHT I WASN'T GOING TO HAVE ANY FUN TODAY. ...fine.
(One not-so-quick bath later...)
What's your name, son? Manic, sir. ...uh oh. Boy, I only knew one Manic, and you sure as hell aren't him! I've heard the stories about the Manic from back them. I'm not him, but that is my name, regardless. You got any idea how big the shoes you're tryin' to fill are? Historically, yes, but something tells me you have a more personal perspective. Damn right I do. Son, if you're gonna go around calling yourself Manic here in Kanto, you're gonna have to earn that name!
Along those lines, there's someone I'd like you to meet. Hmmm? Boo. Ah, shit.
All right, that's just messed up! Hey, you provide the barrels of crud, I'm gonna let Lilly Earthquake them loose and fling them at your team. Hmph. All right, let's see how you handle this! Anemoi, get in there! HAVE YOU COMPLETELY LOST YOUR MIND?
APPARENTLY SO. Wait for it...wait for it... All right, Electabuzz! Attack pattern Omega! Now! Lilly, get back in there! Oh, I get it! Lure out an electric attack with Anemoi, swap to Lilly, and get that Screech off of her all at once! Bingo. Heh heh. The other Manic was twice the fighter you are, kid. Omega isn't an electrical attack. What?
OW! LILLY! A crit, too! Good job, Electabuzz! Heh. Heh heh. ...Lilly? Did I miss something? AHHH-HAHAHA! Hell yeah! I haven't been hit like that in WAY too long! ...um... Kid? I think she liked it. Okay, I'm a lot less comfortable with this fight now. My turn!
Glass jaw, huh? Pity, I kinda liked you. UGH, WHAT A CAVEWOMAN. MADE FROM REAL CAVE, EVEN. You want a little? I've got plenty of whoop-ass to go around. Okay! Let's save the fighting for later, hmmm? He still has one pokemon left! C'mon! Eyes on the prize, babe! Do NOT...call me 'babe'. Rightsorrymybadwon'thappenagain...
(x infinity)
Uh. Sir? *sigh* Yeah? Are you, um, going to do anything else? Kid, wanna guess what its other two moves are? Not really? Thunder Wave and Shock Wave. Oh. So you can't really- -hurt her, no. C'mon, Lilly. Let's get this over with.
Killjoy.
I haven't been beaten that soundly in ages! Look, Lt. Surge... Ahh, just call me Adam. Oh, okay. Look, Adam. I have a Chinchou I'm not really using. Stop right there, kid. Look, I really think Dell would be a perfect fit for you. He'd cover your ground weakness! Not anymore. What do you mean, n - ah, damn. Hello! A slip of the tongue, words that cannot be withdrawn. GAH! I practically forgot you were there, Lucky! You've been so quiet! There was nothing to say. Ahem! Sorry. Look, kid, a Lanturn would be really nice...but if the CiC found out about it, I'd lose my job. No non-Kanto pokemon, got me? ...got it. Sorry about that. Don't worry about it. Between you and me, nobody's really happy about it, but I won't disobey my commanding officer. Understandable. Be well, Adam. And you too...Manic. So, um, while we were in Saffron? I did a little checking up...
...I need a nap.

The awkward part about this ruleset when Kanto's involved? It's really easy to burn through transitions when you hit Saffron.

Update #30: Sanctity - vs. Sabrina
How? Since I was a child, I was gifted with future sight. I don't believe you. How rude. What reason would you have to disbelieve me? Future sight implies that the future is pre-written, that we're all pawns of fate just acting out scripts. Causality suggests infinite timelines, so - while I might believe you can foretell the most likely futures - I don't believe that you can know with certainty what awaits you. I see. One before you believed as you do, though he was less eloquent on the topic.
...much as he was. You're referring to the previous Manic, aren't you? Yes, I am. He was invaluable in pulling me out of a downward spiral. Well, I don't know much about him, but...I was (mostly) a straight-A student before all of this got started. I studied a lot! Nerrrrrrd! He's gotten us this far, hasn't he? Then you must know about subjects like precognizance. I'm aware of, but don't believe in, the topic. To acknowledge precognizance is to deny free will, and that's not something I'm prepared to do.
Was it something I said? You do want the badge, don't you? Oh, right! Molly, its all you! Heaven or hell! Let's rock! ...what?
I'd pick up snippets of conversation in the national park. How about this: "Bang your head! / Metal helmets rock in bed!" ...I got nothing. Wow. You really hit those books hard, huh? I didn't get along with many of my peers. This is all fascinating, but it is time to continue. Right! Sorry.
Are you going to use anything but X-Scissor? ...no? Then I suppose I'll have to up the ante a bit. Time for my trump card!
Humma...Molly, why not have a nice X-Attack? I...think that might be a good idea. Arceus, look at the size of him! Molly, is it? Through my Alakazam, I can see your memories. Loss. Pain. Withdrawl. A false shell. How...DARE you?! Discretion may be the better part of valor. Say what now? Loosely translated? 'Stand back, this is gonna get messy.'
Don't think for a moment that you can just pry into my mind and hide behind a wall! I overcame every obstacle before me to get where I am today! I fought and I lost and I won and I grieved, I clawed myself out of the pit of my own mind through sheer willpower! Don't presume that you can escape from me! You think you can just root around in my feelings and memories without repercussions?!
GET THE HELL OUT! Molly! WHAT?! Molly, it's over! He's out cold. It's okay. N-no, it's not okay! He was in my mind. Nobody has the right to do that! Shhh, easy. It won't happen again. I just feel so...violated. *shudder* Don't worry about it! We got your back. Agreed. If you ever feel anyone doing anything like that again, you let us know and we can swap in for you. COME TO THINK OF IT, I AM PART PSYCHIC TYPE... Anemoi, if I ever catch you probing anyone's mind against their will, I swear to Arceus, I will seal you inside your pokeball, seal that inside a slab of concrete, and dump you in the deepest part of the ocean. A thousand years will feel like a blink of an eye. YOU WOULDN'T DARE. Try me.
Clearly. Then how would you explain my visions and my telepathy? Simple. The visions are a combination of your intuition and your intellect telling you what outcomes are likely to happen. Your telepathy is a result of your connection with your Alakazam, who really does have that power. I...can't find an hole in that argument! There isn't one.
Take these and go. I have much to consider. Understood. If it helps you at all, keep this in mind: even if you don't have actual paranormal powers, the abilities you do have are exceptional in their own right. The nature of a power doesn't change its utility. Also...Dell. I see. Thank you. You are not so dissimilar to your namesake, after all. Weird. Surge said the same thing. Yes, I imagine he would. Be cautious; if Genwyn hears of a new Manic, all efforts will be made to stop you in your tracks. I'll take that advice. Thank you.
So...the psychic stuff is all bunk? What? No, of course not. How else could she have foreseen me three years ago? What? But you told her that was all a bunch of crap! Gave some pretty convincing arguments, too. Yes. Yes I did. HA! That's hysterical! Gimme four! Up high? Down low. Uh... She's gonna doubt her abilities for months, if not years. ...and that doubt should mess with the abilities themselves, which should foster even more doubt. My namesake pulled her out of a downward spiral. I just put her into a new one. You sneaky little bastard! Well done! For what she did to Molly, she deserves it.
Oh, it's nice enough, I sup-
Two so far, and Ceru-
I'm not really sure that's any of your-
YES. Sheesh! Go on ahead, Mister Sensitive. What is it with people out here?
Okay, team. Cerulean is just north of here. I think I've figured out a plan that will help us communicate. Whatcha got in mind? Well, I snagged this pen and pad of paper. Just give me a couple of minutes... While Manic's writing, you. Come with me. UGH, VERY WELL.
In all seriousness, what is your major malfunction? I DON'T KNOW HOW I CAN MAKE THIS CLEARER THAN IT ALREADY IS. I. DON'T. LIKE. YOU. That's pretty obvious, but why? DO YOU SUPPOSE IT MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY ENSLAVEMENT, PERHAPS? That's not it and you know it. You look down your nose at us as if we were nothing. No, worse than nothing. You look at us as if we're contemptible. YOU ARE. DOWN TO THE LAST ONE. What makes you think so?
LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING ABOUT MORTALS. THEY ARE PETTY, GRASPING, WEAK CREATURES. THEIR FLAME FLICKERS FOR BUT AN INSTANT BEFORE BEING EXTINGUISHED, AND YET - TO THE LAST - THEY INSIST ON TRYING TO BID FOR IMMORTALITY. It should be pretty obvious by now that we're not like that. ALL MORTALS ARE CONTEMPTIBLE. RAVENOUS, VILE THINGS WISHING ONLY TO CONSUME. There's more to this that you're not telling me. I can tell. All done! SOME OTHER TIME, PERHAPS. OUR JAILOR AWAITS.
Okay. Lana, I want you to take this note and give it to my other half. Huh? Why? The other me seems to...share...items with me. Oh, I get it. If you're not holding the note... ...then it shouldn't come with me. Right. Give this to him first thing when we swap. Everyone, be good. I'll be back later!
Hey, man! It's good to suh-see you again! Heh, it's good to see all of you too. I'm pleased to see you're well and in one piece. I was pretty sure he'd be all right. Shall we keep going? I'm guessing the other me also decided to visit the power plant. Sure did, though he phrased it as a ta-a-a-actical advantage. He would, I suppose. Anyway, on to Cerulean!
You don't say... I just did! Er, no, I mean...ah, skip it. So, how do you get to the power plant? Do you have a pokemon with Surf? Grace here can manage it. Well then, head east on Route 9, then down the river. Things are kinda a mess down there right now, though. That's what we're going to see about. Thanks for the help!
Why're we skipping all the catches for these routes? Have you seen the local pokemon? Nothin' wrong with 'em. Yeah, except that they're level 10 or so! Any of you would take them down with a single hit. So we're just not ca-a-atching anyone else, then? Not for the moment, but something I heard back in Vermillion tells me that we might want to later.
Well, here we are. Brace yourselves, everyone! We have no idea what's going on in here. You're starting to sound like the other you! It'll be f-fine. What's the worst that could happen? Oh, Arceus... Don't you know not to say that? The universe has a perverse sense of humor. Superstition and nonsense. Let's go!
What? No, sir! Not me! No, no. I know it wasn't you. Oh. Well, that's a relief. Someone dressed in dark clothing busted in overnight and took something very important! How important is 'very'? Go ask for yourself!
ACK! Not it, not it! Oh! Oh. Hello, boy. No, I don't mean you. This guy's gotta screw loose. Agreed, Curtis. Um, maybe blasting things in a power plant isn't a good call? It wouldn't be if that bum hadn't busted in here and stolen a critical part necessary to make the plant run!
...your Charge Beam? Yeah, my Charge Beam! You mean your pokemon's Charge Beam, wherever it is. No, mine! I'll charge my lasers and spec for pew-pew, then open up a can of whoop-ass the size of the S.S. Anne! With your pokemon attack. That you know somehow. You'd better believe it! Want a demonstration?! No! No, that's fine. We'll see if we can find that guy for you. If you do, there's a reward in it for you! Got it. Bye!
Er. Sure? As you can see, the manager is crazier than a Zubat at a GWAR concert. You got that right! I admit, I fear for our safety. Yeah, the general consensus seems to be along those lines. Some shady guy has been found wandering around the Cerulean Gym. Could you look into it before the manager flips out even further? I'd go, but I can't leave this place unmanned. I think we can handle that. We need to find the gym leader anyway. Yeah, uh, good luck with that.
OW! Hey, watch it, buddy! I say sorry! I go now. Go-go! Come again? Loose control of the language, I'd say.
Well, same to you. Yes, yes! Same to you! Is for goodbye! I wonder what his problem was. Didn't they s-say that the puh-perp was wearing dark clothes? Also, he was hanging around the gym. You know, if that matters. He certainly fits the description, but there's no way the gym leader would-
Oh. Let's get him! Y-yeah! I bet he has the machine p-part we need! Right! Okay. Think. We don't know what's west of here, but if the maps of Kanto we studied at school are still accurate, that's Mt. Moon and there's no way in. If he went south, the guard would stop him, and east just takes him back to the power plant, so... So we're goin' north. Yep! Come on, we'd better hurry!
There he is! No closer you come, or drop I do! Uh...what? You step close, I drop part! Okay, okay, look. Take it easy. Nothing bad needs to happen here, okay? You move, I leave, is good! Look. I'm even putting down my pokeballs, see? Better idea, yes! Here you GO! What you do?! Is Dragonair in water! Grace, if he drops the part, make sure you catch it. Simple enough. Now, as for you...
This I never tell to you! Oh! So I would've just taken the one you have there, never knowing it was a decoy? Yes! Is very good plan! It sure is! You must be ready for that promotion, right? Promotion yes! Is good time, more money, more women! Well, what are you standing around here for? Go tell your boss the good news! Yes! Go go now! I do! Goodbye! Wha...how... He can't possibly be that stupid. Then why is he leaving through the south gate? He...he really is that stupid. Wow. I don't...I just...wow. Yeah...now, let's go find Misty. I'm pretty sure I know where she is.
Ouch. Cock-blocked.
Three reasons. Well, let's hear them! One, I want to challenge you to a gym battle, and we can't do that until you're in the gym. Okay. Two, there's a valuable item hidden somewhere in your gym, and I need your help finding it. You don't say? Three, that guy was slimier than a Muk with a cold. Ugh...I guess so, yeah. Hey, wait a minute...
I've always wanted to see what a Johto battler could do! Well, I won't disappoint! Oh, I'm sure you won't. Meet you there, cutie! ...are you all right? She's, like, three times my age. I think I might be sick.

Update #31: Waterfalls - vs. Misty
Well, you seem to be in high spirits. This should be a cakewalk. Don't forget, we've got a lot more to do than just challenge Misty. I'm aware of that, but I'm looking forward to cutting loose on her. Yikes. Not a fan, huh? I won't judge one way or the other in her personal life, but when she started coming on to you, she crossed a line. I gotta go with Claire on this one, man. That was creepy. I'm sure she was just messing with my head. Or trying to, anyway. Let's stay focused. One thing at a time.
Yyyyyes? After the trouble we went to in order to retrieve it, I certainly hope so. Let me just install it and make sure. Come on, baby, come back to life for Daddy! I th-think he might care about this generator a little tuh-too much!
How can I ever repay you? Money! C'mon, you know he's not gonna do that. Worth a try. There's no need, really. Having electricity back in Kanto is its own reward. No, no, I insist! Here, take this!
GAH! Lookit the gleam coming offa that thing! I can't, it's too bright! One of you should take it. Here, just let me get that - there we go - and into the backpack. Why was it glowing like a lighthouse? I can't see anything! Weird, it must've gotten chipped! Anyway, thanks for all the help! My baby is as good as new! Um...could somebody guide me out?
(Later, once Manic could see again...)
All right. Now that electricity has been restored, I think it's high time we go on a catching spree. Heh, nice. Figured it out, did ya? Figured what out? Manic, what'd you figure out? There's a pirate radio station that plays music from other regions. Now that we can pick it up, Manic can catch pokemon from those regions! Wait. You're saying that the music from other regions just...causes these pokemon to exist? What? Nah, that's nuts. They're always there, they just hide unless they get drawn out. And now that we have music that will attract them...
-broadcast through your pokegear! This is Wild Bill reminding you to keep on training, trainers! ...we can start in on all the areas that have been skipped!
From areas near the League: one Linoone, one Doduo. What are you after, anyway? Linoones. They're known in Hoenn to be skilled at finding useful items. So you're recruiting thieves. Not thieves! Who says those items belonged to a person? Yeah! Think of all the stuff we fuh-find just laying around as is! Okay, okay, my mistake. So we have our one Linoone. What now? One Linoone? Ohhhh no. Ummm...? Remember, we're allowed, not obligated to ignore duplicates. I want a team of hunters bringing in useful stuff! Useful stuff. Rare Candies. Hell yeah! Let's get some Loons! Linoones. Right, that.
A few other missed routes... A muh-muh-Miltank?! Easy, Rebecca. You're a lot stronger than her. And...it looks like she wound up in the other world anyway. Huh. Someone else's problem, then? It's not like that, Grace. You sure are jumping to a lot of conclusions today, huh? I'm sorry. I have a strange sense of foreboding, and it's making me a bit irritable. I'll try to calm down. Well, now, wait a minute. If there's something wrong, tell me. What do you think is going to happen? I don't know...it's hard to put my finger on. Especially with no fuh-fingers! Hee hee! Yes, dear. Anyway, it may just be nothing. Don't mind me. Okay, well...let's keep going, but everybody keep your eyes open. Intuition is as useful as knowledge, sometimes!
Does everything taste purple to anyone else? I feel like a ham sandwich. So get one. No, I mean, I feel like a ham sandwich. Let's just walk it off. Johto only turned up one Linoone, let's see if more are hiding in Kanto.
Whoah! They're practically leaping into the pokeballs! I can only assume that they're homesick. Awww, the little guy is kind of cute. Um...Ma-a-anic? Hmm? I think you might have gone one over the limit here. You have one too many pokeballs filled! Well, um. I'm sure he knows what he's doing. ...that never happened, we were never here. Hey, did anyone else notice that only one of the Hoenn 'mon shifted? M-Maybe they're almost immune? Maybe? Anyway, let's go have a look at these Linoones.
Uh, hey! You wanna travel with me and find some cool items? Yeah, uh, not really. Roberto, right? Listen, it would really help a lot if you c- Listen, man. We're out of the wild, in this box, we've got all the food we need, we're good. I've even got two honeys with me. ...thanks a lot. Don't mention it. *urp* Wait a minute. Two honeys? Yup! And here they are. But I caught four Linoones...oh, right. Huh. Anyway, I guess...meh. Seeya. Take it easy.
Well, that was a waste of time and potential catches. I think I'm glad they didn't want to come with us. Yeah, I guess. I doubt they would've gotten along with the team. Anyway, let's go to Celadon. You wanted to see it, right? Yes, but let's wait. Remember, if you go there now... ...then...? C'mon, man. You're smarter than that. If you go there now, you shift, and Grace winds up visiting with the other you. Is that really so bad? Mmm-hmm. Curtis? Trust me on this one, buddy. You're gonna want to be there for this. Well...okay, then. Besides, now that the power's back on, don't you have stuff you wanna do? Oh, hey, right!
I know the elevator wasn't working before, but the power's back on. Let's have a look!
And now that there is electricity, it's also a hazard. How irresponsible. I don't...but... Uh oh. Here it comes! Why in Arceus' name would you have an elevator that could electrocute people in a place where anyone could touch it?! Why wouldn't you specifically cut power to that elevator?! Who runs this place?! Hey! Simmer down, young man. Rrrrrgh... There's no point in getting worked up about it. You would say that. Hey! ...you're right, that was uncalled-for. Sorry, Claire. There's no point in getting worked up about it. Heh. Say, that reminds me - didn't we get a phone call about a gift?
Oh, nice! Thanks a lot! Oh, no problem! It was just a gift from some boy who thought my affections were for sale. Oh. Well, um, sorry about that not working out for you. I'm a girl who appreciates better things in life. Power. Skill. Intelligence. Good for you? I remember you being quite skillful... Gottagobye!
Face it, buddy. You're a chick magnet. I don't want to be a chick magnet! I just want to go on my adventure, is all! Lucky stiff, lots of guys would kill to have your power over the ladies. 'Power over the ladies', hmmm? What? No! I mean, y'know, to get a girl whenever you want. Like a b-berry or something? Auuuugh, no! Y'know! Just to, like, show off and woo them or something! I don't really go for 'showing off'. If you cram your paw any further into your mouth, you'll be able to use Rollout. Let it go, man. Stop while you're behind. Let's just focus on Misty. Now, have we trained enough?
...yeah, I guess that's enough. Any particular reason I'm starting this? Water moves are largely special attacks, and your special defense is amazing. ...good enough. Anyway, everybody remember their basics? Link is out of this fight, etc.? We've all done this a few times before. I think we can handle ourselves. Okay then! Let's go say hello.
Okay, look, can we stop with the 'pest' thing already? And why should I? First, it's not endearing. At all. You sound like a spoiled child. Second, all I did was come get you to do your job as a gym leader, which you should have been doing rather than trying to make time with some greaseball. Third... Uh, Manic? Hang on, I'm not done. Third, what's with your clothing? You look like you just woke up. Who dresses you? Fourth... Manic? Manic! Manic, be quiet this instant and look!! Fine! What?!
I AM GOING TO SKULLFUCK YOU. EEP!
Curtis, what are you doing? You really want that Full Restore coming out when you can't handle it? Oh. Right, good point. Man, what's with you today? You gotta get your head in the game. I don't know. Things are just going really fast. Well, they're only gonna get faster, so start catching up! Here, lemme just smother this joker.
There we go. Augh! Quagsire, drown this creep! My turn, then? Not yet, I don't want to wear you out too early. Quagsire, Water/Ground...Farrah, you're up! Me? I don't think I should, maybe you should let Claire- Listen, Farrah. I can't use Claire here, Quagsire is part Ground. I know you're modest about your power, but you're a Heracross. You've proven yourself time and again in combat. I'm confident that she won't have any flying attacks. I need you here. So, show me what you can do!
...Priscilla... What's with that look? Ah, whatever! Lapras, take him down a few thousand pegs! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to hit it so hard! It's fine, Farrah. You did what I needed you to do. Hey, man. You okay? ...yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. Claire, I think it's time for you to show her what you can do.
You had an electric type this whole time and you weren't using it?! That's what a team is, Misty. We all lend a hand so that no one is overburdened. You seem different. What's going on? You just...you reminded me of something important. I don't get it. Pray that you never do. Right, well. Anyway. Starmie, let's start sweeping the board!
Back when I was a lad in France, we had the most amazing balloons... I, um. Would you like a coin, little bird? That's not good... Hey, Claire. That guy over there said he can generate more electricity than you can. That's a lie! I'm the queen of bacon soda! You can't pour gravy into my boots like that! Take THIS! (screenshot destroyed by excessive electricity)
What happened back there? It's like somebody flipped a switch in your head! My Quagsire, Priscilla... You have a Quagsire too? Neat, can I meet her? No. I had a Quagsire. She was a good friend, always upbeat and positive. Then, while I was trying to catch a pokemon... So, just use a Revive on her! I have Nuzlocke syndrome, Misty. Oh...and then just now, you had to... Yeah. Oh, wow. I'm sorry. That's awful. Misty, I'm sorry, but could I just...get the badge and TM?
Yeah, um. Here you go. Look, about before, the wink and such... It's okay. You're, like, twice my age. You know it was a tease, right? To throw you off? Heh, I think it worked. Listen, I've got to go, there's more to do. Wait. At least tell me your name!
My name is Manic. Take care, Manic. And if you haven't done so already, maybe you could lay Priscilla to rest in Lavender Town? You know, that sounds like a good idea. Thanks, Misty. Ready to flip back, huh? Not really, but I think I need to do this. Don't sweat it, man. We'll be here waiting for you when you get back. Manic...you're really not over it, are you? No. I don't think I am. I don't know if I ever will be. But...before I forget...'Matriarch'.
Hey, man. Hi, Jack. You hadda fight her too, yeah? Yeah. I don't ever wanna fight another Quagsire so long as I live. Did the other me at least handle it okay? Er... Uh, not exactly. It is safe to say that objectivity was lost. Uh oh. ONE COULD ALSO SAY THAT HE BROKE DOWN INTO A BLUBBERING MESS. Quiet, you.
I guess this is the place Misty was telling me about. What place? When I told her about Priscilla, she mentioned a place in Lavender Town to lay her to rest...the other me really lost it? There's no gentle way to put this: he blames himself for her death. Yeah, he keeps talking about how if he hadn't sent her out, this wouldn't've happened. Ouch. It's hard to watch. He's grateful that you caught that loudmouth, though. He says it would be even harder if it was all in vain. I always thought he was the tougher of us. He's trained. He's toughened. He's tempered. He's...ten. You both are...
Thank you, sir. If...if it's not too much to ask, I have a departed friend, and... Say no more. Do what you need to do, friend. ...does it matter if she's a Quagsire? My son, Arceus loves us all, no matter what region we're from. You will find no persecution here. Thank you. I really do appreciate that.
Into the arms of Mew, I commit thee. Into the annals of time, I c-commit thee. Our bond unb-broken... I'm right here. Our life together ended... Our hearts f-for...forev...*choke* Shhh. Come here. It's okay...it's okay. Our life together ended, our hearts forever one. May the gates of heaven open before you. I thought you didn't believe in that stuff? Some things are more important.

Mr. Manic, would you mind terribly if I used that prayer to Mew in my own writing? There's nothing like a good prayer to send of those that we will miss dearly.

Mr. Manic, would you mind terribly if I used that prayer to Mew in my own writing? There's nothing like a good prayer to send of those that we will miss dearly. By all means, use it freely. Just keep in mind that it isn't so much a prayer to Mew. You're not asking for anything. This is a way of saying goodbye.

Update #32: Hearsay
Hey, man. You okay? I don't really know. I guess...I'm as okay as I'm likely to be. Uh, good. See, I got somethin' for ya. What kind of something? A note, see? It's from the other you. Oh! I guess he caught on! Well, let's have a look here...
Dear...other me,
I don't blame you if you hate me. It must have been absolutely brutal to show up and find Priscilla dead. Don't hate Anemoi; he's an abrasive little shit, that's true, but it's pretty clear to me that there's something else going on with him, something that he's not telling any of us. Anyway, Anemoi was the bullet, but I pulled the trigger...he just did what comes naturally to a pokemon. Thank you for capturing him, and doing what I would have done if I wasn't so damned egotistical. Please take care of the team, especially Jack; he's been a valuable ally so far, but he keeps getting closer and closer to death, and I don't think Lana would forgive either of us if he joined Priscilla in the great beyond. You're smarter than me, so I'm sure you can figure out what to do. Also, go to the PC box, please. Something showed up there that...well, you should see for yourself.
- Manic
Sheesh. I'm fit as a fiddle! Are you kidding? You're extra-squishy! That Starmie damn near punched your ticket. I don't understand; why did he name Lana in specific? Lana? Well...it's true. *blush* I'd be very upset if you were to die, Jack. OH, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE. SHE'S FALLEN FOR YOU, YOU DOLT. GO...DO MORTAL THINGS, AND WE'LL WAIT. Ladies and gentlemen, the embodiment of tact. Hey! Buddy! It ain't like that. I'm sweet on her too, but I don't perform on command! Calm down, Jack. Let's go visit the center. It's not like his opinion matters, anyway. AND SINCE WHEN DID I SPROUT A GENDER, HMMM? Matter of convenience, can't be helped.
Ah, thank goodness you're here. Wow, that's usually my line. One of the pokemon in your PC box has been calling for you non-stop. Uh oh. Any idea which one? I don't recognize the species. It looks a bit like a Furret. Well, let's go have a look, shall we?
Oh, hey, that's right! I had four Linoones...and this one has Pickup! WOO! Calm yourself, Manic. There is much more to discuss than my ability. I'm sorry, I just...you're the only pokemon I caught that had Pickup. And the only one that you will. How could you know that? I am Patricia, Oracle of Justice and Honesty, and I am here to aid you on your quest. I know much of your story, Manic the Dedicated. ...you don't say. You are distrustful...I see. The false oracle has found you first. According to him, you're the false oracle. That makes sense. To discredit your adversary, accuse him of the very crime of which you are guilty. Great. Now what do I do? If you're the real deal and he's the fake, I can't just leave you here and bring him along. If he's the real deal and you're the fake, bringing you with would be dangerous in the extreme. Hey, if it helps, I gotta idea. You do? Thanks, Jack. What's on your mind?
Ehh, somethin' like this. Jack? Manic, buddy, listen up. I'm a friggin' Hall of Famer. How many Raticates you think get that honor? None, but- But nothin'. Your opponents are getting crazy-strong, and it's only a matter of time till I don't come back at all. Used to be, that wasn't a big deal. Now...now I got somethin' I wanna stick around for. Manic, I know it's your choice to make. I know that bringing her with us is dangerous, and that ultimately, the composition of your team is your decision. That said, I'd consider it a personal favor if you would abide by his wishes. I...I want him to stay safe, too. When this is over, all of this... Awww, that's sweet! The two of you make such a good couple! We'll have to have a big ceremony and stuff! I'm happy for you, I guess. The capacity to form bonds with others is a paramount survival trait. I can't stand in the way of that, can I? Nope! You try luggin' me around now, I'm gonna latch onto your ankles and start gnawing like a fuzzy Basculin. Heh! Well, we can't have that. ... ... Thanks, Jack. For everything. You wanna thank me? Keep Lana safe for me. Done and done.
All right, Patricia. Please, you may call me 'Trish'. ...all right, Trish. I'm not completely convinced yet- Understandable. The false oracle has a significant head start. -but if you're going to roll with us, you need to wear this for...well, for a long time. Of course. To be frank, I'm not certain how I can be a Linoone at this low level, and yet, here I am. At any rate, follow, learn, and don't do anything sketchy.
Jack, could y- ...ah, right. Damn, I've got the social graces of a rock, and that even seems awkward to me! Er, sorry, Lana. It's all right. I'm used to him being around, too. I TRUST YOU DON'T INTEND TO FURTHER POLLUTE MY MOVE POOL WITH YOUR RIDICULOUS NEEDS. Tempted as that makes me, no. Trish, this is a way you can pull your weight even at low levels.
Of course. It's my pleasure to serve a just cause such as yours in any way I can. UGH. I THINK I'M GOING TO BE SICK. On the contrary. You're going to get better. I BEG YOUR PARDON? Oh, there's no need to beg me, Anemoi. But if you insist... *snicker* Good one! A battle of wits against one with superior knowledge can be almost unwinnable. So, uhm, yeah! Nice to see you're all...getting along?
Oh, right, this place! You've been here? Well, the other side of it, anyway. Haven't you? The other side...OH! In virtually every region, two areas named the same thing will turn out to actually be the same area. Huh. You're kinda a know-it-all, huh, new girl? I apologize if it makes you uncomfortable, Lilly. The fact is, I have access to a great deal of knowledge that others do not. AH, A RATICATE STRETCHED LIKE TAFFY CLAIMS TO BE KNOWLEDGEABLE. TELL ME, 'TRISH'. WHAT DO YOU KNOW THAT I DO NOT? I know what questions you're longing to ask, and I know the answers to them. WH...! Wow. That shut him right up!
Lucky, is there any chance we could get a little more light out of your Illuminate? Neither matter nor willpower can be converted into energy without outside means. So, no, then. Correct. Well, maybe we'll stumble across a pokemon who can he-OW!
Literally. Looks like we don't even get to keep this one. Gahhh, bloody Onix! Be fair, they can't help how Arceus made them. Ffff...fine. Right. Sorry. That still hurts, though. Why don't we get out of here? Unless I'm mistaken, something is waiting for you at the nearby Pokemart. Why would - MOM! It's been ages since I checked!
Ooooooh. It's pretty! It's too soft for me. I'd rip it to bits! Who gets to wear it first? I volunteer! Easy, Molly. Check closely: this is a one-use item. When you use it, it vanishes. Let's save it until we need it. Awww! Well...okay. Excuse me, young man. Are you hunting for rare items? Always, to some extent. Why? Might I suggest trying to catch a Meowth? They're native to routes 5, 6, 7, and 8. ...okay? Their Pickup ability is very handy when - sir? Gottagobye!
Why are we back in Cerulean again? Meowths. Pickup. We can improve our odds! Actually... Oh, come on. Sure, Route 6 is spoken for, but there's still 5, 7, and 8! We're bound to get lucky once or twice.
Molly? Oh! Um, I hope you don't mind, but if we're going to be catching pokemon... No, that's fine, but where did you get the TM? You did! Well, the other you. He said we might wind up needing it at some point. And I didn't notice? Have you been inventorying your backpack every time you shift? ...valid point. Okay, let's get to it!
(Some time later...)
There, you see? Two Meowths and a grass type, which we're badly short on. And I'm quite happy for you, but I think you'll find- Ah, put a lid on it! I bet they've both got Pickup, and you're just scared of getting lost in the crowd! I see. Then perhaps you'd like to make...a wager? Uh oh...uh, Lilly? Maybe this isn't such a good idea? You're on, Olive Oyl! What're the stakes? If either one of those Meowths has Pickup, I let you shave me, nose to tailtip. HAHAHAHAHAHA! I'd give up berries for a week to see that! If neither one does, you wear a pretty pink skirt until we beat the next gym. Eugh...well, fine. You're on! What're the odds of me even losing this bet?!
I'm going to wish I hadn't done this, aren't I? *shrug* Probably. This is going to be violent, isn't it? Give me a head start before you open the box, okay? Hoo boy...
I do hope they have one in your size. :3 AAAAAAAAAUUUUUGH!! How?! How could you catch six pokemon that could know Pickup, and only one of them actually does?! Just lucky, I guess. I guess we need to pay a stop by the Pokemart. AT LAST, SOME ENTERTAINMENT. WATCHING THE PEBBLE SQUIRM WILL BE AMUSING. I don't think that will be necessary. ...what? If it's my debt, then it's my debt to forgive. Consider your obligation dismissed. I trust I've proved my point? PRAISE ARCEUS! Thank you thank you thank you! Your point is proven! Manic, this one is the real deal. I don't know much about this Curtis guy, but how could she have known unless she was the real one?
...oh dear... Manic? Lana, think. If I'm in this world... ...then the other Manic is in the other world with Curtis! With no idea that he's the fake! Fortunately, he's in no immediate danger; the false oracle won't want to spring his trap anywhere that couldn't be lethal. Let's explore a bit while we can. But the other me is defenseless! False. The other you is surrounded by one traitorous pokemon and five faithful ones. He is also the more seasoned agent. He is in danger, but recall: his path follows ours. Right, of course! As long as we steer clear of danger, so does he...and as long as he's not in immediate danger, Curtis won't strike! Very nice! Okay, let's see what we can do while I'm here, without getting into anything too dangerous.
Well, it's picturesque, isn't it? I'd be lying if I said I was completely comfortable here. Don't fret, Lana. No harm will befall you here. OF COURSE, IT'S POSSIBLE THAT SHE'S SIMPLY THE FRAUD, AND A FREAK TIDAL WAVE WILL WASH YOU OFF OF THE PIER. SURELY, YOU CAN SEE THE WATER MOVING, EVEN NOW. Urgh...I don't feel so well... What's that, Anemoi? You say you want to scout ahead and personally face any dangers? How gallant of you!
REMIND ME WHY I TRAVEL WITH YOU AGAIN. One, you owe me a massive debt for Priscilla's demise. Two, you have no choice in the matter. Three, of all of the team who have something to learn from this journey, you stand to gain the most. I DON'T RECALL ASKING YOU, HAIRY EKANS. Trish, what is it he wants to learn? THAT'S QUITE ENOUGH OF THAT TOPIC. For the time being, Anemoi is correct. Ah, look! An item!
Ooooh. A grass attack that needn't be attached to a grass type! Rare and useful indeed. I don't understand. If there's a war on, why would it be back here instead of in use? Since the early days of man, it has been a custom to stockpile goods in one's home. Actually, Lucky's not far off. It's strategically sound; with tons-of-fun up there blocking the path, the only way to reach this thing is through Lavender Town. Without a gym, it's not a high-priority target, which means only those native to Kanto are likely to discover it. ...I'm going to go ahead and assume that Lana is right on this one. Hey, yeah, that reminds me. Speaking of Big Stuff over there...
...I wanna rematch! I don't think it's awake enough for that. Or for anything else, really. What do we do now? That cave could hide something useful. Hmmm. Maybe we've already solved this problem. I hope there's an...alarm clock channel or something.
Merciful Arceus, what the hell is that?! Manic, turn it off! Please! I'm trying! Auuugh, Maker, it's so much worse in person! I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE ALL COMPLAINING ABOUT, THIS MUSIC IS DELIGHTFUL. IT BRINGS BACK DAYS GONE BY.
Well, it woke him up, all right! Him, me, the people in the town, people across the world...ugh, what a din! Uh oh. Molly, he looks pretty pissed off. Better shore up your defenses!
Sure, but he just looks like a fat blue Meowth to me. What could he possibly-
Ow! Hey! I've never seen a Meowth that could do that! Boost your defense again, it's coming in stronger! Right! Boosted, and OW! What is it with this guy?! Arceus, he hits like a tank! Maximize your defense! Okay, my defenses are at maximum and OWWW! How is he doing this?! Hey, Molly! It's Rollout! Doubles in power each time it hits! That's bad! That's very bad! I can't boost anymore! OWWWW! Molly, take this and heal! You won't have to. Just bear through one more hit! Come on, Molly! You can do it! AAUUUGH! M-Manic...switch me out! Leave her in! Heal her and leave her in, trust me! Are you insane?! Molly. Trust me. O-okay...well, here we go...bracing for impact! *dink* ...hello? Resets after five hits.
I knew I saved these for a reason.
'Luciano'? Named after a very fat, very impressive man. Won't he mind? Nope. He's also very dead. Ghoulish. Appropriate, though. He'll need tenor so levels to catch up with the rest of us, though. Ah, Creosote... I see what you did there.
Still no heart scales. What I wouldn't give for a Luvdisc swarm. Yeah, but we found this little fella! Heh, he's kinda cute. OH, IT'S JUST TOO EASY. Then save your breath. What? I didn't mean it like that! I mean, look at him. Awww, cute little guy. Aaaaand he's gone. *sigh* We seem to be veering toward one extreme of the bell curve. Seriously. All these catches, and what do we wind up with? Two Meowths I'm not gonna use, and Luciano. PERHAPS YOU'LL HAVE BETTER LUCK IN DIGLETT'S CAVE. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT LIVES THERE. Oh, shut up.
Whew...long cave. I think it's time to face facts: we're not going to be able to avoid a new town for much longer. It's for the best, really. Since Manic will switch the instant he steps into town, and the gym will be further inside, he'll be able to alert the team before danger strikes. Wait, you mean we've been wandering around for nothing?! Not at all! I was able to get to know this version of Manic while we walked, we met Luciano, we even found a way into west Kanto. Trish, if you want us to trust you, you're going to have to trust us. That means no more secret plans, okay? Understood. I apologize.
Here, take this! Just don't tell anyone where I am! Sure, it's no problem, but why are you so afraid of being found? I was vacationing here when war broke out. Now I'm afraid of being a POW! So you're Johtian, then? Shh! Yes. Now I can't get home! Listen, we're going to have to go back through that tunnel to continue what we're doing. Why not come with us? I don't have any pokemon, they'll shake me to bits! I do. We'll help you through, then you can book passage on the Fast Ship. I still have my ticket, you can use it. You're...you're serious? I can go home?! Sure. C'mon, let's get you out of here. I just want to take a quick peek at what's back here first, and...
You mean the Oa...er...right. Right! I'll be sure to stop by. Amazing. They serve him like he was the real thing. Aide: Also, I have something for you. The professor sent it as a gift. That's, uh, surprisingly thoughtful. I wonder if it's a new pair of running shoes, or an updated itemfinder, or-
...dafuq? Aide: Amazing item, isn't it? ... ... Aide: Hello? ... Aide: ...right, then. I'll tell him you said thanks. Weird kid...
(later, outside Celadon City)
That guy practically threw himself onto the boat! You do realize you've given away our ticket home, right? Sure, but have you ever seen someone so happy? I don't think it's going to matter, Lana. How could it not matter?! Don't you think we want to go home?! You are already home, on the planet Earth. IT'S PLAINLY OBVIOUS THAT HE DOESN'T INTEND TO SURVIVE THIS MISSION, AND WILL ALLOW US ALL TO PERISH AS WELL. Oh, come now. Are you even trying anymore? Come on, everyone. Is this what you want the other me to see when he gets here? Lana, please take this note for the other me. Don't worry, he'll get the message. Be well, Manic. You too, all of you. Even you, Anemoi. Now, here we go...
Heyyy, welcome back, bro! It's always strange saying 'welcome back, Ma-a-a-anic' when you were just here. It's good to be back! Now, I need Link, Rebecca, and Grace to do something for me. I only have time to say this once, so be quick. Manic, you look troubled. What's the matter? See Curtis over there? Hey, bud. Nice seein' ya! Restrain him. Forcibly, if necessary. Wha- hey, what the- leggo! What the hell, man?! So, uh, why're we doing this again? Hello, Curtis, I met Patricia. Trish, for short. Ah, dammit. You have some explaining to do.

So now we've met the false Oracle for sure! Just one problem: which one is the fake?
Regardless, it's past time we retire Jack from the team, especially now that he has something to come back to.
Also, let's be real: fake or no, isn't it nice to see Trish stop Anemoi cold?
