Update #33: And Injustice For All - vs. Erika
Ow! Ease off, wouldya?! Ah, sorry. I'm still not used to my newfound strength. Not too loose. You're not gettin' away, pal. I ain't tryin' to get away, ya walking toaster oven! Bring him. We need to talk to him somewhere we won't be interrupted. Yeah, c'mon. I gotta agree, we need to work this out.
I'll be frank with you, Curtis. Okay if I keep being Curtis, Frank? You're a riot. At this point, I don't know what to think. Look. Manic. Think about it. If I was the fraud, I coulda turned on you a lot earlier, right? I'm assuming it wasn't convenient at the time. Besides, I know stuff only an oracle would know. I know about the other oracles, the other worlds. I know what's gonna happen! Kinda. So does Trish. She correctly guessed that I'd find only one pokemon out of six with Pickup. She also knows about this 'Creosote' person. Man...somebody prepared her good. Look, seems like somebody's doing some spying. I dunno what I can tell you that she doesn't also know! Neither do I. C'mon, everyone. Keep an eye on him, let's get in there and explore the town. We can't just hang around forever.
Hey. Are you okay? Yeah, I just...no Manic has ever distrusted his oracle this much. It's kinda...I dunno. Off-putting. You understand why we ca-a-a-an't take risks, right? Oh, yeah, I get it. I just...I dunno, man. I sorta thought we were pals. If you're the real thing, you'll have puh-plenty of chances to prove it. Right, M-manic? Yeah...yeah, we've still got half the region left to cover. I just wish I knew who to believe. ... Nothing to say, huh, Curtis? What'm I gonna say? 'Trust me, I'm the real one'? That's what she'd say. Let it go for a moment. I need some air. I need to think.
Makes me wonder. About what? About a bunch of things. Is the other me looking at the same sky? Thinking the same thoughts? Sorry, man, but...nope. You're too different to think alike, an' he's looking at this part of HIS sky. Hey. What's the other world like? Complicated. Lots of sneaking around. In this world, it's okay, but in that one? It's pretty obvious we're not supposed to be here. It must be very taxing. Sit down, relax. I can't, Grace. I really wish I could, but I can't. There are just so many variables! What if...no, that wouldn't work... Hmm? I was going to suggest you ask him something only an oracle would know, but I don't know what that is. Me neither. Besides, if things really have been compromised, only-an-oracle-would-know might not be specific enough.
...oh, shit. Ah, dammit! What? What's going on?! *sigh* I just figured out how we got compromised. I guess it was for the best, but...dammit! That musta been why you got attacked. Attacked? What? Right, right. You wouldn't remember...nevermind. Okay, this is getting us nowhere. Let's keep looking around.
Hmmm. So this place is like Goldenrod for Kanto, huh? Except for the bike shop, and the underground passage, and the radio tower, and the size... All right, all right, I get it. I w-want to go inside and see what it's like! Yeah, okay, we could do with a bit of resupplying.
Oh, um, sir? You're standing in front of that display. Si, that I am! And you're...uh. Dressed in tights. And a mask. Muy observant, my young amigo! ...is it offensive to say I'm a little creeped out? Not at all, my young friend! I am Crasher Wake, a luchador in training! A hummawha?
A luchador is the very essence of wrestling! Honor! Family! Tradition! These things run strongly in the blood of a luchador! Sssssso... Ah, I see you have noticed my mask! Yes, all luchadors wear masks! To be unmasked is to be stripped of one's honor, and I must have honor if I am to lead a gym some day in my homeland! Ohhh, I get it. Well, it's pretty obvious what type you'll be going for, huh? Si! The crashing waves, they call me to make a Water-type gym! Courageous must be losing it right about now. ...water type. Es verdad! You would perhaps like an autograph? It will be very valuable when I have achieved worldwide renown!
N-no, that's okay. I really need to get going. Nino, you look troubled. Tell Crasher Wake your worries! It's fine, I'm fine. Don't worry about it! Ah, but I must! A luchador must inspire the youth of tomorrow! Uh. Right. Well...I have these two friends, right? Hmmmm. Go on. And both of them say that the other is deceiving me. Ah-ha, I see! And you do not know what to think! Rrrrright, basically.
Listen closely, mi amigo. When you see into a person's heart, when they show you their true strength, that is when you may truly know them. Whether through lucha, or through battle, or through simple words, a person's true honor shows through their actions, not their claims of such. ... Do you understand? ...maybe. I think so. You know...I think I will take that autograph, after all. But of course! Here you are. Now, I must depart and return to Vermillion, where my mentor awaits with a ticket home! Farewell, mi amigo, and always remember to act with honor!
So I go into a department store. Mmm-hmmm. Inside, I meet a luchador. In full costume, no less. You sure do. He offers me his autograph. I decline. It would appear that way. Instead, he gets me to tell him my problems. Sure. And he has words of profound wisdom. G-go on?
Am I asleep? Or is this the telling of some weird joke? Kid, you just met Crasher Wake. In twenty years, he's gonna have that water gym in Sinnoh. You - er, one of you - will help him outta a jam. Okay right moving on then thanks! May I make a request? Uh...sure. So long as it's nothing weird. That was plenty of weird for me. I want to see if they keep pokemon at the game corner. Hmmm. Fair enough, I think.
Hmph. Figures. Let's get out of here. Wait...wait a minute. Manic, you can't be serious. You know how pokemon get here! Yes, I do. They're captured or sold, sometimes bred for the purpose. And you still want to do business with them?! Grace. Were you happy back in Goldenrod, at the Game Corner? What? No! I wanted my family back. Do you wish I hadn't won you? Of course not, you're the...oh... You're right, the system isn't fair. But maybe I can rescue just one of them. Excuse me?
Seriously? Sure, it's no trouble. Okay, how about Grace? Looks like it's...Psychic. Hmmm. How about...Claire here? I'm getting Psychic from her too. Uh, heh...think that might be my fault. Come again? Oh, that explains it. You have an Alakazam with you! Come back some other time. Any particular reason? Psychic interference. Don't blame him, he can't help it.
Hmmm, looks like we had some leftover coins from last time. Oh yeah! 'Cause if the other Manic played this... ...right, right. I wonder how that works, anyway. I just realized something. Are you as good at this as he was? I don't know. How good was he? Frighteningly. The catch is, he used his understanding of tactics to win. What about you?
Probability. Whew... Problem? I got curious, so I did a bit of a surface skim. Y'know, just basic brain patterns. Man, you got all kindsa fired up! Curtis, I know I hadn't mentioned it in your presence, but please - no brain scanning, thought reading, or other things like that without asking. Oh? Yeah, sure thing. No sweat. W-which one are we going to get? Oh, right. Well, I think I have a pretty good idea, but I need one of you to hang back. I'll do it if I can meet them later! Don't worry. We won't leave you behind.
Here you go! Never come here again. Great, I guess you're my new trainer. Hey there, buddy. What's your name? You think they name us? It's true, Manic. I only had a name because I'd had one before. Holy Arceus, you're huge! So you don't have a name?
Manic, right? Look at my collar. Say, that's a pretty nice collar you've got there. Glad you think so. You might want to remove it before you leave town. ...any particular reason? I'm guessing you don't want it to inject me with a painless, swiftly fatal poison. What?! Of course I don't! Well, that's why. Anyway, what does the tag on the collar say? 'EEVEE'. In all caps, even. Since none of these people were my trainers, how would they know my name? Fair enough... Meh, most trainers don't give a damn anyway, I hear. Just call me whatever you like. Hey, c'mon. You don't hafta be like that. I have a better idea. Grace, can you get us back to Lavender? Any time you like.
What is this place? This is the Name Rater. I heard him. What I'm asking is, what are we doing here? Well, the name rater's job is to give pokemon new names. Oh, I get it. Okay. What's my new name? Beats me. And you lost me. I won't know your new name until you tell me what it is. What?
Let me try. Dear, he's letting you choose your own name. Um... What's wrong? He's shaking! Can I go back in the ball? Please? Well...yeah, sure, of course. Here you go. *pchoo* What was that about? C'mon, let's go back to Celadon. Maybe he's just shy.
I dug it to keep them out! ...and nobody minds? Not as long as I keep it off the road! And it keeps them away from me! Hee-hee! Should we tell him they can just seep through the fence? I think we have bigger problems. There sure are an awful lot of problems lately. Sorry about that, Farrah. Oh no, nothing like that! I'm just saying. Sorry! Let's just stay on the move. Problems seem to solve themselves if we just keep walking.
...yay? And I never get fat, like that tub of lard! Uh, okay. Which tub is that? Oh, he's up in the department store, probably looking at masks or something. You mean Crasher Wake? You met him! My condolences. And I see you know him too. Yeah, we train under the same master. Oh, Arceus. You're not going to start a water gym too, are you? What? No! The wrecking ball over there may be deluded, but I wanna start a fighting gym! Oh. Well, um, if I'm ever in the area, maybe I'll see you...someday? Before you ask, yeah, another future gym leader. Another person for this other me to help? Yeah, but first she's gonna try to kill you. ...why does this all sound like schlock fiction to me? Dunno, I bet somebody'd read that.
Nature-loving... ...princess? That could mean a lot of things. Well, I guess we're going to have to go in one way or the other. Maybe we should go back and get Rebecca. If I'm guessing right, there'll be no need.
Hell yeah. A grass-type gym! Torch all the things! Share the wealth! I didn't learn Signal Beam for nothing. And I can fly, see? Wheeeeeee! Uh. Anybody else think she's acting weird? It's the nip. The what?
Dragon-nip. Normally only grown in outlying areas of Unova, it's widely blamed for the region's proliferation of dragon types. Nepeta draconia is often harvested in the late spring and sold in small doses worldwide; there's an entire row of it over there on the left. ... ... ... What? I had hobbies before you met me. O...kay then. On that note, if somebody could reel Grace in, let's get through this gym.
It is kind of nice in here. Comfy. It certainly is. Herbal remedies are very soothing. Mmmmph. I need to stay focused. Erika, right? We're here to challenge you... *yaaaaawn* to a match. I'd be happy to oblige. I must say, you have some interesting pokemon with you. Oh, some of them are only native to Johto. Smells nice in here.
Oh, uh, yeah. Sorry if I forgot to mention that before. It's quite all right. I welcome challengers from all regions. Your voice is really calming and steady, you know that? Oh, my. I have been told that before, yes, thank you. Manic. Hmmm... MANIC! Huhwhat? What? Where? It's all a set-up to make you let your guard down, man. We've gotta stay focused! Urgh...right. Phew. Wow, that's a hell of a trick! Ah, your - Typhlosion, yes? - saw through the trick to this gym. No matter.
What I cannot win through guile, I will take by force. Okay, team! Up and at 'em! This is no time for rest!
I got this one! What? No! Look at what you've done! Link! Ah, crap! I didn't realize it'd spread like that! My plants! My pokemon! Ma-a-a-anic, we have to do something! And we're going to! Farrah, I want you to create a firebreak! Contain the blaze to this half of the gym, and put out that Tangela before it lights the whole place up!
Um, right! Got it! Oops...I think I put the fire out a little too hard... It's all right, it'll recover! Not if the gym burns down! Well, it's not going to! Grace, I need you to - Grace, get down here! Hee-hee, you're lots of fun! Hey, Grace! Is that a batch of dragon-nip I see down there? Wow, it's a big one, too! Gimme gimme gimme!
Heyyyyyyy! That wasn't nip at all! Are you sure? Hey, I've got an idea. Why not water up your wings with Surf, and spray the place? Okay! Here you go, all you pretty plants! Drinkies! All right, I have to admit, that's a fairly innovative sprinkler system. Now I just have to - wait, Victreebel, no! Gah, get away! Victreebel, put him down this instant! I don't think it's willing to listen! Dammit, all this water's putting out my flames! It's like punching a sponge! Hey! You, the hentai reject! That's my pal you've got there, now put - him -
- DOWN! Whew. That's a relief. Victreebel, return! Is it over? Yeah, we're cool. C'mon, up ya go.
My Victreebel almost ate you. It did. But it only did that because you almost burned down the gym. Also true. I won't tell if you won't. Right. Take the badge, take the TM, and never come here again. Yes, ma'am.
Hi, mom! When're you gon' come home, y'rotten shit? ...uh, mom, I'm in Kanto. Whah?! Kanto?! Who's gun get me my *hic* rum?! Who is that? That's...that's my mother. Well? Ansser me, y'little bassard! I... Good f'r nothin' spoiled brat, just like y'father!
You...you know what, mom? You might just have to go get your own rum. WHAT?! Or...maybe you shouldn't! Maybe you should stop drinking so much, too! Who th'...who...I raised you from when you were jus'... Y-yeah! And now I'm grown. And I don't have to take this anymore! Muh...Manic... I've had a really hard time through all of this, and you aren't even there for me like a mother should be! I... When you feel like being a parent again, call me back. Until then, I'm...I'm not coming home. *click* ...whoah. Hey, buddy, I- Don't, Curtis. Just...just don't right now, okay? There's more to do, let's just go do it.
*pchoo* Hey, uh. Manic, right? Right, that's me, for what it's worth. Look, um. Think we could go back to Lavender? Yeah, I guess. You're ready, then? I think so? Try to understand, we don't really get things like 'choices' in the game corner. I assure you, I understand completely. Really. Why do you think so? Because Manic won me from the Goldenrod game corner. !!!
Heh, yeah, it really is. Welcome to the team, Edge. Thanks! Man, I've got my own name and everything! Thanks for not naming me something stupid. Stupid? I'm not exactly the only Eevee in there, and I've seen some others get won. Dare I ask? One of my best buddies got won by a little girl. Erk! Yeah. Lemme tell you, nothing ruins your badass image like being named Mister Fluffykins.
Oh, damn it. I just realized something. The Exp. Share is in the other world, being held by...uh, anyway, I don't have it with me. Your training might have to wait a little bit, Edge. Hm. Well, we'll see. Being held by... Trish. Shhh. Ever notice how Alakazam have big, long ears? Damn. Eh, skip it. Weren't we gonna do something before all this? Uh, what's all this 'other world' stuff? Hoo boy. Let's explain as we walk.
So what you're saying is, my trainer is completely out of his mind. Something like that. Okay, team. It's time to make another switch. We'll miss you, man. Keep your chin up, all right? Be well. I'll be ha-a-a-appy when we don't have to worry about who goes where anymore. Me too, but for now, here we are. Um. Manic? I want to give you this. Hmmm? I saved it from Erika's gym. Let me just tuck it into your collar...there. It's a nice flower, Farrah. Thanks! I think it'll also help in another way, but I'll let that be a surprise. Okay then. Be good for the other me, everyone!
...and I called her a puppy! It was pretty funny, if you asked me. Yes, and I called you a pebble. FASCINATING. ARCEUS, PLEASE, TAKE MY EARS NOW. I must admit, the stories are more amusing when heard in person. Ah, and I believe we've switched Manics while we talked. Hi, Trish. Your tone of voice suggests that you're not entirely pleased to see me. Curtis presented some very good evidence that he's the real deal. I have no doubt of that. He had a great deal of time to prepare.
What, you can do that? Just kinda fuck off whenever you feel like it? Perhaps he simply sees things on a grander scale. Thanks for the information. So, Trish. So far, we have an unlikely prediction from you, as well as a few things Curtis also said. Then we've been compromised. Most distressing! Fortunately, the others now already know. Others? The other oracles. And the other Manics, in truth. They can see all that transpires here. Curtis seemed to know how you were compromised. Naturally. I'm certain that he was the cause. ...GAHHHH. Fine. Okay. Let's just...go make sure everyone is healed. I'm sorry, Manic. I know this must be terribly frustrating for you. You're the only Manic who has ever had to deal with an...anti-Oracle of sorts. Let's just drop it for now.
Ugh, I know, right? Seriously, this is his job. If he's not going to be available, why not hire a new one? I know! Without him, no one can get the badge. We seem to be on the same wavelength. Yeah, you're all right. What's your name? Manic. Yours? Ace. Nice.
Yeah, my parents are kinda cool. Hey, nice Golem, too! What can I say? The kid's got taste. Yeah, Lilly's a real MVP! Who's your starter? I picked Squirtle. Now he's a badass Blastoise! Oh, I picked a Cy- MANIC! ...siiiiiimply fantastic fiery friend. Charmander? Cool! Can I see? Um, maybe later. I really do need to run! Okay, that's cool. Seeya around!
Phew. I'm glad I decided to take a breather in my pokeball before that! Manic, you have to be more careful! Right! Right, sorry. I just - in the other world - I know. I know. But in this one, we're basically criminals around here. Remember that, okay? Sorry, Lana. Maybe we should take quick stock of who's okay and who's not? Okay. Let's review. Typhlosion. Native to Johto. I'm out. Golem. Native to damn near everywhere, and the envy of all! I'm in. Scizor. Evolves from Scyther, which is native to Kanto! I'm in, woo! Starmie are native to Kanto as well. DON'T MAKE ME HURT YOU. Linoone may not be mainly found in Kanto, but they aren't mainly found in Johto, either. I should be fine. So, that sums it up. Lana and Anemoi should probably stay in their pokeballs when we're in town, but everyone else should be fine. Speaking of which...
Manic. Hmmm. Manic, wait up! Mmmm-hmm. WILL YOU SLOW THE HELL DOWN?! Okay, okay! What is it? If you go into Pallet, you'll switch again! Right. There isn't a gym in Pallet, though, so we'll switch back soon. Yeah, but it's Oakbot that's waiting for us! We've gotta hit Pewter first. So what? Why should I care? Whoah. That's new! Very new. Manic, what's going on?
None of you really knew me before all of this. But I've known you since the beginning. Since the beginning of my journey, sure. I mean before that. Okay, go on. What do you know about Professor Oak? Well, he's a pokemon professor, he was highly respected, he was kil- He was killed ten years ago. Yes, he was. What's your point?
Lana, back home, Oak is still alive. He's not respected, he's revered! The man is a genius. A fount of wisdom. When I buried myself in my schoolwork, I used to think that someday, I'd be just like him. I don't get it. Lilly, I don't want to meet Oakbot or whatever he is! I want to meet the real Professor Oak. I always have! I know it probably sounds stupid or something, but he was my hero. AND NOW HE'S DEAD. GET OVER IT. You're wrong, Anemoi! He's alive! At least...he's alive where I'm from. Manic... Is it so much to ask? Is it really so much to ask to get to meet my childhood hero, and not some mannequin that's dolled up to look like him? I've lost so much to all of this world-shifting nonsense, can't I just have this one little thing? Maybe we could keep Oakbot waiting a little longer?
Look who's here to meet you. A Sentret and...wow, a surprisingly low-level Ledian. Lana. Notice something they have in common? Well, they're both Johto pokemon, for one thing. Yes, they are. See how they cling to you? ... They're afraid. Me too.
I know. We all are. And maybe Molly is right, maybe Oakbot can wait. Or maybe he has time-sensitive information that will expire. We don't know which it is. ... If you really want to go into Pallet, I'll go with you. I'll support your choice. But if you're going to choose, understand the stakes. ...its not fair. No, you're right. It's not. He's right there. All I have to do is take a few steps, and he'll be right there. I know.
...are you okay, kid? Leave me alone.

It's kinda funny, in a dark sort of way: no matter which world, War or Peace, Manic always ends up having to grow up too fast. Thanks for nothing, Enemy Who Must Not Be Named.

Update #34: Identity
Manic? Are you mad at us? No, no. I'm sorry, Molly. I'm just...I'm mad at this situation. Both Manics have grown up so fast, it's easy to forget that you're still children. I SUPPOSE THAT JUSTIFIES HIS NONSENSICAL AND SELFISH BEHAVIOR? Haven't you ever had someone you wanted to meet before you die? YOU ARE SPEAKING TO A BEING WHOSE LIFE SPANS THE BREADTH OF TIME. CONSIDER WHAT YOU JUST SAID. To a being whose perspective is nigh-infinite, a human life must pass in less than the blink of an eye. QUITE. I think I'm beginning to figure you out. Yeah, he's a colossal douche! Sort of...I'll go into it some other time. For now, let's focus on not getting lost.
Score! We don't really have anything you can use it on, though. Almost true. I'm pretty sure Ike can use it, if it comes to that. Who? Ike. The Oddish? Ohhh yeah! Wait, you're gonna swap him in?! No immediate plans to, but remember, he's in the other world at the moment anyway. Regardless, it's nice to have one of these around if I need it.
Oh, my. Trish? What is it? It's a Blue Flute. Quite rare. So...I can play music on it? Sell your Awakenings, Manic. The tune played by this flute will instantly awaken any sleeping pokemon. You mean we won't have to use that horrible music from before to wake up any Snorlax we come across? Thank Arceus!
Well, that wasn't too bad. Too much grass. Bleah. Oh, any place has too much grass for you. Not true! Give me a nice cave any day. Ladies, we're about to make the switch. Lana, could you hold this for me? Another note? Another note. Where are you finding time to make these? I'm a fast writer. At any rate, be good, annnnnnd...
...there we go. You're back! Thank goodness. You're...not all mopey, are you? Well, maybe a little. Why? The other Manic was getting on my nerves. Blah blah Oakbot, blah blah mission. He didn't wanna come here. Still, his dedication is admirable. Whaddaya expect? He's Manic, Dedicated. Hello, Curtis. You're not gonna have me held down again, are you? No...there's something weird going on. Both you and Trish have very good arguments as to how you're the real Oracle and the other is the fake. Makes sense. They'd hafta put up a pretty good front. For now, I'm just going to play it straight and let the chips fall where they may.
YES. Ma-a-a-anic... Look. I skipped out on an opportunity to meet Professor Oak. PROFESSOR OAK, Claire. The real live article. Let the boy have his fun. What's the harm? What's a 'museum'? Oh, right. Edge, a museum is a place where you can learn all about ancient artifacts and civilizations, see how things used to be back in the days before you were even alive, and see bits of it for yourself! What does it do? It teaches! Fascinating. Can I wait outside? *sigh* If you like. Yeah, I think I'm out for this one too. Fair enough. Everyone else, let's see what we can see!
What, right near here?! Yes, just a little bit east. So you've collected them for study, right? Er, no. What?! Why not?! We tried! I'm sorry, I'm really not following you. You tried but failed to collect them? Make a fist. Okay...here. A fragment that size weighs about three tons. OH. Right. So, we've got equipment on order, but for now...they stay put. Hey, at least we don't have to worry about anyone stealing them!
(About an hour later...)
Before I forget, Edge, I snagged this for you. Okay, well, what is it? It's like a thinking cap. It'll help you understand how the others fight, and learn from it! Learning I can use! Now we're talking! Right, but before that...Grace, are you up for a quick flight? Of course, you have only to ask. Where to?
Sweet! It's so flashy! What is it? Oh, right! You weren't with us at the time. This is the Pokeathlon Dome. You can totally show off your power here and compete against other pokemon! Honestly, you're such a jock. Damn right! ...strap. Hey! So, why are we paying this place another visit? Three reasons. First, to test the theory that the other Manic follows my steps exactly. Since he can't get here from Kanto, I wonder what he's doing now. Second, to give Edge a better idea of what everyone can do by letting you all demonstrate your athleticism. And third...well, you'll see.
(Some grueling grinding later...)
Whew! What a workout! So tired...can't move...Arceus, take me now... I think...we all need a breather. That was lots of fun! And productive! No more smashing rocks forever for us. I get it! Niiiiice.
Hey, Edge. Yeah? It's not hard to tell that you still don't completely trust me, so...full disclosure here. This water stone? It's for you. I think you'd make a bad-ass Vaporeon, but I'm not going to evolve you unless you're okay with it. What if I say no? Then we wait until you decide on something else. I've had a Thunderstone in my pack for a while, so you could do Jolteon instead. We'd have to wait a while for Flareon, but I'd be willing if that's what you want, or we could work on Umbreon or Espeon. What do you think? I think I could really use the help with Water-type HMs, and your reduced Attack and boosted Defense works well for Vaporeon, but it's your life. ...yeah. You're right, it is, isn't it? Gimme.
It's my choice, and I choose to help out. Thanks, I appreciate it. Great. A water type. *ptui!* AAGH! Don't do that! HAH! If I can make the big guy wince like that, this was definitely worth it! C'mon, Edge. No intra-party conflict. You too, Link. We've got more to do. What do you ha-a-a-ave in mind? Grace? If you would?
Just take it and leave. Just like that? We could waste your time and mine watching you make a mockery of my favorite game, or we could cut to the chase. ...okay then. I wonder if I could get this thing to load Angry Pidgeys. So, let me get this straight. Surf, Waterfall, Ice Beam...and Growl? What can I say? I haven't decided what to do with that fourth slot. In the meantime, something that lowers opponents' attack isn't half-bad. If you say so. Now what? Now to Violet City. I'd like you to do a bit of training, Edge. At my level?! Trust me, you'll be able to handle this.
Grass types. Are you trying to get me killed?! Grass types during the day. At night, it's all Rattata and Gastly. You mostly want the latter. Are you sure about this? Edge, trust me. You're a valued teammate. I won't do anything to put you at risk. Man, you really are two guys, aren't you? How do you mean? The, uh, other you said it's his fault one of the pokemon in the 'other world' is dead. ...an error in judgment was made. A reasonable error, but a costly one. It's a mistake I could just as easily have made. Don't judge him too harshly, Edge. Uh, right. So, training now?
(A few hours later...)
So, uh, why're we going this way? Two reasons. I can tell ya one of 'em. It's not like a Manic not to explore a region! Throughness is a good personality trait, usually. That's one of them, yes. It'll be good to know how to get back to Cerulean if flying stops being an option for some reason. Yeah, all right. What's the other?
Simply amazing. Just look at them! Oh, for the love of... I ca-a-a-an't say I'm surprised. Think of it. These crashed down from outer space. Imagine the implications! I bet Lucky is having a field day with this. Who? Oh, right. One of the pokemon from the other world. I guess I really should take updated team-shots. We'll just keep an eye open for Cameron, then. ... The photographer that keeps following us around? Oh, him. You've got to be more attentive. Okay, okay. Let's just keep walking.
Medic! The trainers around here...really strong! I'm just glad I'm on the sidelines! This is starting to become a problem. These people are just strong enough to be a threat, but not strong enough to give a good rate of return on experience! Let's return to town for now. Okay? Yeah, seriously. There are too many trainers to take on in just one trip.
OH, THANK ARCEUS! My everything hurts... I'm just glad I could help a little. A little?! You lit them up like fireworks! Oh, well, um...thank you. Now, let's all get inside, in you go. I'm in no shape to herd right now. This looked a lot easier from a distance! Grace is right. Let's all get inside and take a well-earned rest. What is there, a convention out here or something? Anyway, we're almost through, just need to check out Mt. Moon...in the morning.
I needed that! Of course. Humans need to rest just like pokemon, you know! Yeah, yeah. Thanks, mom. At least the place looks pretty small. STOP. Whoah! Hey, what the hell?! What's the ma-a-a-atter? Everybody take five steps back. Real slow, now. Um, okay...one...two...three...four...five. What's your problem, man? Watch what happens when I snap this wire. *snkt* AUGH! A cave-in! A trap. Look, man, I know you said not to just casually scan, but...you-know-who is in there. It's weird, though. I can't get much more than his name. Then let's not disappoint him.
...but surviving a cave-in? Impressive. Varas. I did tell you that I wasn't giving up, didn't I? I wouldn't expect you to. Shall we begin, then? I've gotten a great deal more powerful. Before I do, I have a question. And why should I deign to answer you? Because this has personal relevance to you. I did some research between now and the last time we met, Varas. Maximus Giovanni - your father - never took a wife. Yes, that's correct. Then are you an illegitimate child? In a variety of ways, yes. Now, I'd love to continue our little tete-a-tete...
I still don't understand why! Are you truly that thick? Not only did you - a different you, but you all the same - murder my parents, but the only way I'm going to earn my existence independent of this candy-coated nightmare is by destroying you! Even if I didn't want to fight you, I would have to! This is literally the reason I exist! ...then let's do this.
I feel sorry for you, Va-a-a-aras. To have your entire life, your entire identity wrapped up in another living thing. What kind of life is that? Even if you did destroy Manic, what reason to live would you have left? You cannot possibly hope to understand. For you, this world is all there is. My eyes have been opened to a greater reality that transcends this place! My reason to live is life itself!
See, pal, somethin' about your story doesn't check out. First off, I can't get a read on you. That means you aren't from around here. Second, what makes you think the Big Bad is gonna keep that promise if you nuke Manic? Why not just shut this world down with you in it? It's really quite simple, Curtis. If I can successfully defeat this Manic, then the lives of the others are forfeit. Once that goal has been achieved, giving me my own legitimate life is a pittance. There's no reason not to do it.
I got this guy. But first, heal Claire! Hmph. How meaninglessly noble. What about you, Link? Pffft. I can tank a hit from this guy. You've gotta make sure she's up and running! ...why? Isn't the fight almost done? He's got a guy on the bench, remember? And we've beaten everyone else! Rotten throw-rug...fine. Come meet your end!
Quite a dilemma, isn't it? ... What's he mean? Edge, isn't it? You're new to this, so let me explain. My Alakazam is faster than Claire. If she strikes him with another Signal Beam, she'll defeat him. That's good, though! I suppose that depends on your perspective. The trick is this: he will hit her first. That's okay, she can take another Psychic! Ah, but Manic isn't so sure. Are you, Manic? ...
C'mon, man. What's the problem? Take the shot! Ah, that's right, you couldn't have known. You see, the other Manic 'took the shot' as well. Anemoi told you what happened, didn't it? He took the shot. Priscilla...would have absorbed a normal hit, but it was a critical...and she died... Oh, you bastard! Wow. That's a low blow, man. And now, here you are again. What will you do, Manic? You know that no one else on your team has special defense to match Claire's. A critical hit meant for her would probably kill any of them outright.
How does someone become that evil? What a horrible thing to do. Stay strong, Manic. We're right here with you! Curtis? I wish I knew what to tell ya! Even Future Sight is showin' me too many different outcomes. You win, and also you lose! That's ENOUGH! Claire? Well, that's enough of that, at any rate.
EEP! I can't...I can't fire my Signal Beam! It's a trick! W-what's a trick? The situation hasn't changed. He's tryin' to psyche you out, but Thunderpunch will do the job same as Signal Beam. We didn't lose any ground! Ugh. I miss the days when I was the only one with an Alakazam.
Ma-a-a-anic. C-Claire? Do you trust me? I... Do. You. Trust. Me. Y...yes... Then let me fight. Varas knows his purpose. This is mine. Mew, please, help me... All right...Thunderpunch, now!
YEAH! Suck it, douchebag! Oh, thank heavens... DAMN it! I refuse to let it end this way! I don't see how you have a choice, douche...bag? *nod* ...douchebag! I...I see. Thank you, Varas. Hmph. What are you thanking me for? Now I understand what the other Manic was going through...how he must have felt. In trying to torture me, you brought me closer to myself. Pathetic. I'm leaving, but I'm not done with you yet! Actually, I believe you owe me an answer.
Fine. Ask your question. Maximus Giovanni never took a wife. Who is your mother? Ugh. Honestly, it's been staring you in the face the entire time. Enlighten me, then.
From the moment I met you, I knew the names of your pokemon. I understood them when they spoke. Haven't you ever wondered why? Well, I just assumed you also suffered...from...Nuz...wait a minute. You're finally catching on. If I suffered from Nuzlocke, my pokemon would be long-dead. Then...how? I've already told you so many stories. Perhaps now I'll tell you the one that most people don't know about. I'm listening.
In 2020, an expedition was made to the deepest reaches of South America. Within the jungles of that tropical hell, a sliver of the true Mew was discovered. The scientists captured and forcibly impregnated it, altering the genetic makeup of the resulting offspring to create an extraordinarily powerful creature called Mewtwo. In 2021, Mewtwo escaped and made its way to Cerulean Cave, where it began plotting its revenge on those who had wronged it. That doesn't explain- I'm not finished. In 2022, Manic - a different one - tore through Kanto and defeated Gary Oak, Mewtwo, and my father. This much is known to your history books. Yes. What is not widely known is that, after his defeat at Silph Co. at your hands, my father knew that the end was nigh. He also knew that the chance that he would defeat you was dwindling to nothingness before his eyes. He needed a way to continue his legacy. So... So, using samples retained from Mewtwo before its escape and his own genetic structure, he conspired to create a child. Human in appearance, but with power not unlike Mewtwo's, if severely diminished in scope - he didn't want to be usurped by his own child, after all. Sweet Arceus, are you saying...
Shortly after being disgraced and having his life's work destroyed before his eyes, my father exiled himself to Seven Island, where he took his own life. It was not long after that before Manic obliterated the mind of Mewtwo, leaving it a non-sentient pokemon. And so, when the police came across the laboratory left behind, they encountered a crying infant, too small to fend for itself and apparently without parents. I don't...I don't know what to say. That child grew up knowing nothing of its parents. Half-mad from the cacophony of voices in its head, surrounded by people who had no idea that they were standing before the greatest psychic mind alive, it could barely function in the world in which it found itself. And then...it was approached by a malevolent entity. Its power cleansed his mind; now he could think without longing for death. Now he understood his power, where it came from, and who was responsible for the circumstances of his birth and subsequent life. He understood...everything. Maker...
I, Varas, am the cloned offspring of Maximus Giovanni and Mewtwo. I am the most powerful psychic mind on the planet. To earn my existence and gain my revenge on you for destroying my father's will to live and my 'mother's mind, I will end you, Manic. The next time we meet, it will be the last. Wait. Varas, I know I have no right, but I want to ask you one more thing. Ask. If you really are the most powerful psychic mind on the planet, then you know - between Curtis and Trish - who the real Oracle is. Yes, I do. Will you tell me? I believe I will, at that.
It seems I wasn't the only one given knowledge of the truth. You had better keep searching, Manic. You haven't yet found the true Oracle. And now, goodbye.
...damn. Pffft. He's full of it. That didn't feel like a lie, though. He said I'm not an Oracle, so I know he's lying. Who knows how much of the rest of that junk is made up? Curtis. What? You don't believe him, do you? What if you were just made to think you were the Oracle? What if you've just been telling me what you think is the truth? But...that ain't... Can you tell me with absolute confidence that it's not true? But...if you're...and we... Can you tell me with absolute confidence that Trish isn't in the same situation? That this might not be a smokescreen for the true oracle? Without a doubt? ...no... Come on. Whether you're an Oracle or just have implanted memories, you're still a friend of mine. Let's get out of here.
Ma-a-a-anic... Claire? I know that most of the time we've known each other, I've just gone with the flow. I can't deny that. It's been useful at times. It has to stop. We need some perspective. We've been doing nothing but seeking perspective! I think I see what Claire is saying, Manic. We've been focusing on all the things we don't know, and ignoring the things we do know. I gotta hear this. Let's...walk and talk, okay?
Number one: you are Manic. You ha-a-a-ave us with you as a team. Right? This is true. Number two: we work well together, and we are your friends. Right? ... Hey, man, listen: I'm pretty sure I'm an Oracle. But even if I'm not, I know stuff like they would, right? So I'll help as best I can. ...right, Claire.
Number three: our goal right now is to get all eight Ka-a-a-anto badges and challenge Lance to a rematch. Right? Right. Also, note to me: bring Rebecca through here. Definitely. That reminds me, Grace. What ever happened with your father? I...I'd rather not talk about it right now. Uh oh. Ahem. So, if we know who we are, and we know where we're going, maybe we can focus on that and let the answers come as they may?
Arceus, how long is this path?! (I know, right?) I think you may have a point, Claire, but we shouldn't stop investigating. Of course not, I never said we should. What I a-a-a-am saying is that we shouldn't let the answers or the questions bog us down too much. Well, if you ask me, you're all completely insane. I am not crazy! Buuuuuut, you're the sort of crazy that's fun to be around, and you'll help show me around the region instead of being cooped up in that game corner. So, I say screw the answers, let's have some fun with it! Yyyyyeah, okay, I can agree with part of that. It'll do for now.
...I think I may be hallucinating. Man, we need a town in the worst kind of way.
OH, COME ON. How many routes is that without a town?! Four. Maker, Kanto ain't as civilized as I thought! Why do you do that? Huh? 'Maker' instead of 'Arceus'. What's that about?
Well, I toldja Manic's got a benefactor, right? You did. Well, see, the Oracles ain't exactly Arceus' work. The benefactor made us. So...who is this benefactor? Dunno her name, but she's real pretty. A lady benefactor, oh my. Ahhh, you pro, you! It's not like that! At least, I don't think it is. Hey, looks like we gotta town, finally! We goin' in? Nope! Then what are we doing? Going back to Celadon.
Now we take the other path! AAAAAAGH!!

And there you have it! Varas's true identity explained, as well as the identity of his 'parents'.
Why is eastern Kanto so barren of civilization?!
Anyway, we're getting close-ish to the end...kinda!

Update #35: Nitro - vs. Brock, Janine
Gah! Manic, it's okay. F-fine, I'll come quietly. Oh, man... I suppose you thought you could get away with it, hmmm? Just walk right past? I...I, uh... Manic, listen, he's- Shhhh! And what would happen to me if you hurt yourself? What about my job? Uh, come again? This area is for bikers only! If you're not on your bicycle, you don't get past me, and that's that! Bicycle... AHHH-HAHAHA! Oh, man! That was golden! You totally thought you got pinched! You aren't even in the right world for it! Damn, man. That's harsh. I'll get you later, Link. Erk...
All right, I ha-a-a-ad better get in front. It's okay, Claire. You can hang back if you want. I don't think anyone else knows Thunder Wave any more. How are we going to make a ca-a-a-atch? We're not. Ohhh yeah! The other Manics did this too, I forgot. Oh yeah? Yeah, sometimes they get their teams real solid, and they don't wanna change anybody out, so they just stop catchin'. Except Self-Aware, but he had a good reason. I have to admit, Curtis, you sound like an Oracle. Yeah. Yeah, I hope so...
(After a good bit of fighting...)
Well, that wasn't so bad. Yeah, but I'm getting bored! I wanna do more than just watch. I watched plenty already! Now, now. Be patient. If you jump the gun, we could lose you, and no one wants that. Ugh, fine, fine. Okay. I can wait a little longer. Not much longer, though. Nice Dragonite. Hmmm? Oh, thanks! Yeah, I'm really proud of Grace. I'm a trainer too. Well, good for you. Why would- oh, hell. Heh heh. My buddies up there took it too easy on you. Weezing, let's show him what we do to overleveled opponents!
... Don't feel bad, kid. You still got five left, right? We can keep fightin'. Uhm. Speechless, huh? Ha! Yeah, I get that a lot. You might want to look up. Huh?
Now, that was just rude. What?! Oh, come on. You didn't think I was that dense, did you? You just said we were overleveled. But...my Weezing... So, Grace is smart enough to use Fly to escape the inevitable kamikaze move. Now, you had another pokemon, right? Uh oh. INCOMING!
(And so, the leader of the bikers got beaten down.)
I see. Do you really think it's time? Better question: why did we come back here instead of going to Fuchsia? Simple: if we had gone to Fuchsia, we would have the other Manic right now. He didn't seem that bad to me. He's not, but...I like this Manic. I mean, I like the other one too! Ohhh, me and my big mouth. Question stands, though. We ready for this? Well, let's have a quick look.
I'm not doin' it. Using me seems unwise. Rock is one of my few weaknesses. No, thank you. I'll help however I can. If you want... I'm a bit on the fragile side for this kinda work. More importantly, I specifically want Edge ready for this gym. He's our ace here. Then let's get in there! I'm ready! No, you're not. You aren't even particularly close. Grinding? Grinding.
(Literally HOURS of grinding later...)
I AM INTOLERABLY BORED! Well, good news! It's time to go in. I'M GO- wait, really? Really. You should be able to hold your own in there. In fact, if he has any rock/ground types, that's basically a one-hit KO right there. Man, you're okay, but you're gonna have to nut up if you need any more levels. Somehow, I don't think that's going to be a problem, especially after this gym.
It's nice to meet you. So, they have manners in Johto. It's nice to meet you too... Manic. Manic! Well, they certainly have interesting names in Johto, too. So, shall we begin? Now, hang on, don't go stampeding into battle just yet. ...no? You were polite enough to me, so I feel I should return the favor by warning you. Warning me, hmmm?
You don't say. Hey, I'm just trying to warn you ahead of time. See, until the battle actually starts, you can still withdraw your challenge! Actually, I really can't. Do tell. I'm not just doing this for the fun of it, Brock. Talk to me. If this isn't for fun, why are you doing it? I didn't say it wasn't fun. It is! But...it's also for a memory of someone lost. And for people who are counting on me. And for my ideals, the things I believe in. I used to want to be the champion because I thought it would be glorious. That's what all trainers start out wanting, isn't it? To be the very best. Perfectly natural, if you ask me. There's more at stake now. I don't just want to defeat you, Brock. I have to. It sounds like you're involved in something pretty big, Manic. You know I can't simply give you the badge, right? Heh, don't you dare even try. I came here to challenge you, and I am!
That's the spirit! You say you're fighting for what you believe in. Show me the strength of those ideals! Okay, okay, wait a minute. Hold on. What? You can't stop now! I can and I am.
What's the matter? Are you listening to us? Seriously, we sound like poorly-written anime characters. Come to think of it, that was getting kind of corny. I mean, I just poured my heart out to someone I've just met! Who does that? You're right. And really, 'Show me the strength of those ideals!'? What does that even mean? That's really embarrassing. Hey, don't tell anyone about this, okay? I'll do the same. Yeah, I think I can live with that. I'm just glad my gym trainers were too busy tending to their pokemon to notice.
So, battle now? Sure, that works for me.
Oh, hell. Edge, take that thing out before it uses Explosion! Excuse me? It's a Graveler, right? What, just because it's part of the Geodude line, it has to know self-destruct moves? Well, I mean, I guess not... No way I'd have it knock itself out just to try to take you down. That's sick. Wow. Much respect.
I guess I should've seen that coming. So, people try to explode their pokemon on you a lot? Grace just dodged one, like, a few hours ago. Seriously, I think you're the first trainer with a Geodude or Graveler who didn't want to have it detonate on me. Ugh. That line is so misunderstood. Anyway, let's keep fighting!
Hell yeah, tearin' it up! Sheesh. Well, at least your Vaporeon is having fun. He's a bit new to all this. He was stuck in the Game Corner his whole life. Ohhhh yeah! I heard about that place. Not my style. Besides, that damn Voltorb Flip game cheats. Anyway, let's see how you handle this!
Of course. Sorry, had to do it. The Kabutops was a nice touch, though. I know, right? Not a great move for it, but Giga Drain on a rock type catches more people off-guard than you'd think. Silly question: what does your team do against Grass types? *sigh* Roll over and die, mostly.
Well, you got me fair and square. Here you go. Hey, listen. Brock. Ever thought of substituting an Aerodactyl for your Onix? For real? Yeah! Listen, your team is missing two things: speed, and an answer for grass types. Aerodactyl is both of those things! Hmmm. You know, you have a point. Oh, and here, take the badge. And this TM, too. Thanks. You know, you're one of the most bearable gym leaders I've met. You and Misty both, really. Yeah, we had a good friend in common, a guy named Red. Wish I knew where he's gone. I'll keep an eye out. Ricky. See you around, with luck!
You gonna get that? No. Come on, we've stalled long enough.
Hello? Hello, Manic. GAH! Second time today. Sorry. Hi, Trish. Look at you, mister high-strung! Are you okay? It was a long shift that time. Everything all right? I'm fine, Molly. Don't worry. You don't sound fine... While I was in the other world, I sorta told off my mother. Way to go! Yeah, I guess. Anyway, she tried to call me before I left Pewter. I didn't pick up. I have something here that might make you feel a little better. Here you go. Hmmm? Let's have a look.
Dear Other-Me,
I owe you yet again. The team told me how badly you wanted to meet Professor Oak, but you relented so that I could. I don't even know how to express my gratitude; in my world, he's long-dead, and I would never have the chance to meet him. You passed up meeting your idol so that I could have a chance to interact with a genius, and while you were in Johto, that's exactly what I did. I guess our paths only coincide when it's possible...anyway, I wanted to thank you for that consideration. I truly hope that, when you read this, either you're in Pallet Town or it's possible for you to go there. You deserve to meet Oak, the real one. The android is a reasonable dupe, but he's just not the same. Be well, and take care.
P.S.: Do what you can about Anemoi. Things are starting to get kind of stressed.
As you can see, we've been busy. You should find a few more Rare Candies in your inventory. Very, very nice! Now, what's all this about Anemoi? He's always been the embodiment of a dreary day, but he's becoming downright hostile. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. I'VE BEEN A VERITABLE ANGEL OF AN UNWILLING SLAVE. No you haven't! Manic, he's been getting even more unpleasant. I didn't even think it was possible, but apparently it is! ...I'll leave a message for the other me before we switch again. For now, let's go meet...Oakbot.
Professor Oak, I'm here for an update. Excellent. Opening communications now. I'll wait. Attention, Manic: This is Lance. Do you copy? I do. Hello, Lance. Hello, Manic. How are things coming? Not bad. I've got five badges already. Badges? Have you forgotten your mission? Far from it. The way I see it, if we gather all eight Kanto badges, Genwyn will be forced to step forward and face us. Manic, if you gather sixteen badges, your next stop will be here. You'll have to fight me at full strength! What?! Why? Eight badges means the Elite Four and the Championship. That's one of the basic tenets of the League! ...I think I get it. I'll see you soon, Lance. Wait, Manic- Close communications. I'm leaving. You get your wish, Genwyn...but it won't help you.
(Later, at the eastern entrance to Fuchsia...)
AHEM. Hmm? I WOULD RATHER LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR NOTE SAYS. I don't doubt that you would. TELL ME. I don't think so. THAT WAS NOT A REQUEST. Good, I don't have to bother denying it.
UGH. WHY MUST YOU BE SO BOORISH? I believe it has something to do with the quantum state. AH, THE ONLY MEMBER OF THIS GANG OF MISFITS I CAN TOLERATE. EXPLAIN YOURSELF. Based on the contents of the note preceding it, I surmise that your knowledge of the message may alter the message itself. THEN YOU BELIEVE THAT THE MESSAGE ITSELF IS NOT A CONCRETE THING? The message, yes. Your receptiveness of it, no. ...I SEE. I WILL RELENT, FOR NOW.
Manic. What's on your mind, Lana? I wanted to thank you. I may not get another chance. What do you mean? There are still three badges left to get. Correct. And where are they? One is in Fuchsia, one is in Viridian, and one is supposedly in Cinnibar. Right. You'll swap when we enter Fuchsia. But not when...oh. Oh, I see. Right. You're smart enough to follow that to its natural conclusion. We don't know for sure, though. No, we don't. But just in case that's how it turns out, I want you to know that it's been an honor serving by your side. You're the equal to any agent I've ever seen. I'm not saying goodbye, Lana. Here...a note. Make sure he gets it. He's going to need it. I will. Stay strong, stay sharp, take heart. And you. For now, it's time to move on.
Pretty quick, if ya ask me. Mercifully so. The other you was even worse than before! It was painful to watch. I tried to comfort him, but I don't think I did much good. Sorry. He's got a lot to deal with. I left him a note with some advice, I really hope he takes it. I'm sure he'll take it into consideration. What did he need help with? A lot of things, but specifically, Anemoi. The Lugia. The one that killed, uh...Penelope? Priscilla. And yeah. Things are getting even more tense over there. Anyway, let's focus on here, okay? I don't think there's much going on, so let's heal up, hit the gym, and finish. Seriously! Like we don't have our own problems.
The hell? Easy, Link. They're clear glass walls. Damn ninja wannabes. I have an idea. Claire, would you go pick me a bunch of flowers from outside? Farrah, help her pick ones with lots of pollen. Um...okay. Oh, um, okay. (A few minutes pass) Here you go. I hope this is good enough. Grace, can you get airborne in here? Just a little bit. What do you have in mind? Take these flowers, and flap your wings good and hard. Everybody else, step outside for a moment. I see! The walls are sprinkled with pollen, we can see them all! Nicely done, team. Now, let's go confront Janine.
What, nothing to say? ... Well then, this will be a quick match.
Speakin' of quick... It's a Crobat! Careful, man. Those things are crazy-fast! I know what you're thinkin'. Sure, he's fast, but can he outspeed a Crobat? Doesn't help that this thing hits good an' hard, physical-like. Something along those lines, yes. Arright, pal. It's you an' me on three. One...two...THREE!
Feel better? WHEW! Much better.
Yeah? Well, here's an encore! Not ba-a-a-ad! Yep! Fastest brain in th' west. The big guy over here's got the rest. What, me? You aren't scared of a few bugs, are ya?
Yeah, no. It's a bit anticlimactic, isn't it? Everyone is thinking it, so I'm just gonna say it. BO-RING! Can we go now? Almost. Wow, I have to admit, most gym leaders would be expressing disbelief or anger or something by this point, but you're markedly reserved. ... Um, right.
Not a word, huh? ...oh, you want me to come closer? Huh. Weird. Go on, see what she wants. Um, that's awfully close. What's she sayin'? Well, let's seeOH ARCEUS. Oh. Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know. What? What's going on? We, uh, we should go. Before I make an even bigger ass of myself.
Uh, got it. Right. Pallet Town. Ricky again. Hah! C'mon, what's up? You're radiating all kinds of freaked out. Really now, Manic. What could she have said that was so bad? Nothing. She didn't say anything at all, and I suspect she hasn't for a long time. Vow of silence? No tongue. Looks like it was cut out somehow. EEEEEEGH. Yeah. Let's just hit Pallet and take a breather. I need to clear my head.
Besides, we're getting very close to our goal.

I like this version of Brock. Anyone who deliberately refuses to use self-destruction techniques is okay in my book.

Update #36: Exuberance - vs. Blaine, Blue
And you're sure it's this way? Pretty sure. That's what the town map says. And we can't go the other way. No, those guys in construction gear have the path blocked. What's his problem? He's just doesn't like being surrounded by water, I think. Hey, I'm a fire type! Nothing but water types around here. Link, just calm down. I won't use you in combat. We have five other teammates. Yeah, yeah. I still don't like it.
Okay, here we are. Now, everyone be good for the other me. I hope he's cheered up. Uh... ...hello? I'm sorry, I think I may have missed the shift somehow. Grace? Why am I still here? Well, why not hit the place up for some answers? Good point, let's-
Sweet mother of Arceus! Somehow, I doubt it. No, I mean - Cinnibar - where's the town?! Buried, looks like. You don't keep up with news, huh? No, I mean, I knew there was some damage, but this... Yeah, the place is pretty much buried. It's a miracle the center survived. That explains why I didn't shift. Because...because this isn't really a town anymore. This was a town? Seriously? Yea-a-a-ah, and now look at it. What a disaster. Shift? Shift what? Oh, uh, nothing. So this is what's left of Cinnibar...
That's how it works. These people were dumb enough to build their homes on an active volcano. What did they think was gonna happen? Way to talk about the departed. Hey, it's not my fault. Besides, there are no departed. They got vacated. Oh! Well, that's a relief. Yeah, all except a few stragglers in the center, but that'll probably close down soon. In fact, that's why I'm here. Gotta check the place out, and I'm the closest gym leader. Wait. You're the gym leader for Viridian?! That's me! That explains why you aren't at your post. Anyway, I need to challenge you to a gym battle!
I'm pretty sure I am. That's nice. Do you have seven badges? No, only six, but I'll have seven once I face Blaine. I fight challengers who have seven badges. Not six. Put on your man-pants, then come find me. What's this guy's problem? Good question, Link. What's with the attitude, buddy? I'm not your buddy, pal. You want to fight me, you're gonna have to prove you're worth my time. Now get going. Blaine isn't gonna come to you. Somebody needs to teach that young man some manners! Tempted as I am, we might as well go find Blaine first. For now, let's just make a pit stop.
Uh oh. Oh, that's just great. What now, fearless leader? Don't get your tail in a knot, I've got this. Do you know where he went? Yeah, he set up in some islands east of here. It's cold as ice over there, in places! So a Fire gym is set up in the middle of water and ice? Blaine went a little...funny...after he lost his gym. Um. How 'funny' are we talking? And ruin the surprise? Perish the thought. Good luck! So, tha-a-a-at's where we're headed next? I don't really see how we have much choice. Let's see if we can even find the place, first!
Oh. Well, that was pretty simple. Strange. What's that? With the other path out here blocked, he's basically isolated himself. I wonder why. Well, that other trainer did say he's gone a bit off. Are you sure this is a good idea? No, but we don't really have much of a choice. We can't do much else until we've done this. It's some guy in a cave. How bad can it be? Before we find out...
I don't get it. If I was running a Fire-type gym out here, I'd pack something to deal with all the Water types. Oh yeah! And you think- Exactly. Fire and electricity might not be the same thing, but they're closely related on an elemental level. I might even have you learn something like that, Link. In the meantime... ...in the meantime, this covers one of my elemental weaknesses! Kick ass! Shall we go inside, then? I think we shall.
So you found me again, did you? Well, you can't have it! Uh, have we met? It wasn't enough to just come for me, huh? You had to destroy the whole town?! If you're talking about the eruption, I didn't even find out about it until about an hour ago! Don't you lie to me! I've paid my debt! That was years ago! This guy's a few logs short of a campfire, that's for sure. It seems like losing his gym has made him unstable. Be careful. What are your pokemon saying? They're talking about me, aren't they?! Well, to be honest, yes. Careful, man. This guy is twelve kinds of screwed up! A psychic type! I knew it! You're here for the secrets in my brain! Well, you'll have to fight me first!
Blaine, no! I'm just here to challenge your gym like anyone else! The devil you say! Anyone can say anything, prove your words with action!
Man, I thought this guy was going to be a challenge! Double weakness to water? Really? See, I knew it! You're here to disarm me! Well, if you mean defeating your pokemon, sure! But we'll get you to a center afterward! Harrumph! You're not taking me alive!
And that's two! I don't think he's listening. No! No, you can't do this to me! I'm one of the most brilliant scientific minds of my generation! Blaine, listen! We're not here to hurt you! I just want the badge and the TM, and we'll leave! Oh, you'll leave all right! You'll leave in a bodybag! Come on, I know you can do it, you're my last hope...
Blaine, why would I even come after you? What do you even have that I would want aside from being a gym leader? Secrets, of course! All the things I know! With all the evidence destroyed, I'm all that's left! Destroyed. Of course! You have to have seen Cinnibar if you're here! Then your life's work... Gone, gone, all of it gone! I'm all that remains! Grace. Let's end this quickly.
Nooooo! F-fine, you win. I'll go quietly. Blaine, look. I know it's not much, but here. W-what? What is this? What are you doing? This crackpot tried to off us! I've got some spare money. Maybe you can work on rebuilding your lab? I bet Professor Oak would love to help you with your work. Fifty...thousand? But I'm supposed to pay you! Think of it as a loan. I'm interested in science too, you know. A strong mind like yours should have equipment, and a gym leader should be in a town. I bet there's room in Pallet.
You're serious? But I can't leave, I don't even have any water pokemon anymore! I do. Let's get you out of here and start work on a proper gym, okay? Young man, what is your name? Manic, sir. Formerly a bit of a scholarly shut-in, now in the midst of something very, very big. Manic...thank you. I had just about lost my mind in here. It's okay. You lost a lot, but I think it's time you start rebuilding. Let's get you out of here. Of course, of course. But first...
That's Overheat. Be careful with it, now. ... Is something wrong? I assure you, it's a very powerful attack. No, I'm sure it is, and I appreciate it. It's just....I'm not sure. Something about it makes me uneasy. Now, don't fret. I'm sure you have the skill to use it properly. Right, right. Now, come on, let's get you back to civilization.
(Later, after dropping Blaine off at the entrance to Pallet Town...)
Do you think - he'll be okay? I mean, I know you're not an expert - which is to say, I mean, I'm sure you're clever, but... It's okay. I wish I could say for sure, but he's at an advanced age, and he's lost so much. I'm sure you didn't do any harm. That was kind. He's not a bad person, and I don't think he's really crazy, he's just having a hard time coping. Ummm... What's up? I know I don't say this very much, but, um...I'm glad you found me. Yeah, coulda been a lot worse.
Curtis, what do you think of Blaine? Will he be all right? Look, I gotta confession to make. Here we go. Go on. I know whatcha said about pokin' around in folks' heads, but I sorta reached in and gave him a little push. Just a nudge in the right direction. He oughtta be okay, though. *sigh* Curtis... It's fine, it's fine. In this situation, I think I can turn the other cheek. Phew! I thought you'd be super-pissed. Meh, it was for a good cause. Now, I think we need to go find someone.
Define 'for real'. I'm not like those other losers. I play hard. Define 'play hard'. Those other idiots just stick to one type of pokemon. Not me. I've got my team, and they're the ultimate badasses. They're going to stomp you flat. Define 'stomp you flat'. You're doing that on purpose, aren't you? Yeah, a little. Ugh, you're an annoying little brat, aren't you? And you're an annoying big brat. Let's get this over with.
Smell you later, asshole. You won't smell my asshole now or ever! Oh, forget it.
I swear, that guy is so uptight, he can probably floss with his underwear. Pffffft! *snrrrk* Edge! What? It's true. Shove a lump of coal into him, and in a week, he'll shit out a diamond. *pfffftchch* Okay, okay. We get it. C'mon, let's go stomp him. Maybe...maybe he's not so bad? Maybe he's just insecure?
Nope. I'm callin' full-blown jerk on this one. Called it. Wow. What - I mean, why- It gets worse. I think he's stuffed his gym with push panels and douchebags! Everyone just calm down. Let me have a look. There she goes. Must be nice to be able to fly. It's simple enough. Just follow my directions and we'll be through in no time.
Why would you even design a gym like this? Isn't it obvious? Enlighten me. *sigh* Are you dizzy? A little, yeah. Weakened from the mandatory trainers? Slightly. Oh, I see. An unfair advantage, then. Best kind there is! Only Red could beat me here.
I keep hearing about this Red guy. Who is he? Oh, man. If you have trouble with me, just forget facing him. If you can even find him! He's the best of the best. Never says a word, doesn't need to, his actions speak for him. Fanboy? Victim. I was champ until he stomped me. Well, if he's missing, why not re-take the role? Lance. He's ridiculously powerful and doesn't care who he steps on to get his way. I wouldn't have a chance. Besides, he's got some weird Sinnoh pokemon with him, outrageously powerful. Red would have a tough time with it! Hey, what's wrong with your Dragonite? Grace? I'm coming for you, Lance. Nothing will stand in my way. I think she's looking forward to the rematch.
Wait, wait. You're telling me she's not even focused on this match?! Well, I wouldn't say- That's it, no more mister nice guy! We've chatted long enough. Easy, there! I was just saying- RESPECT MAH AUTHORITAH!
I think we got him worked up. I'm first. You're sure? I think Link might be- I'M. FIRST. Uh, she can have my turn. Don't hurt me! Yikes...okay, go for it!
Next! Grace, I know you don't like Lance, but- NEXT! Wow. What's your problem?
Here, take this X Defend to heNext! Heh. Problem, trainer? GRACE. What?! I understand that you're upset. I may not know what happened, but I can tell that much. Even so, that's no excuse for treating me this way. He's right. Calm down before you make a mistake. But he...I...no. No, you're right. I'm sorry. It's difficult for me to control. It's all right. We should talk later, though, okay? Let me ha-a-a-andle the next one.
You don't have to do it all yourself. We're here to ba-a-a-ack you up. Yeah, for real! Don't hog all the fun to yourself. Pretty sure that's not what she meant, but close enough. Ha, one-shot!
A Pidgeot. I'm a-a-a-all a-tremble. Heh, don't look so bored! This one has a few tricks.
Can it cure its own paralysis? Tch! No, but I can use a Full Restore. Swell. And how many of those do you have? Wouldn't you like to know? Besides, you're a challenger, don't gripe. You can use as many Full Restores as you want! I'm not going to use a single one. Let's stop talking and start bla-a-a-asting, okay? Hmph! Not bad, but here's mud in your eye!
What. No, no. Scared yet? Anything your Ampharos can do, my Pidgeot can do better! I can think of one thing Claire can do that your Pidgeot can't. Oh yeah? Try me!
This is how you use Thunderbolt. Win. Oh, ha-ha. You're a riot. Unless I'm sorely mistaken, that's six. You're done, yes? Hmph. Yes, I'm out of combat-ready pokemon. You win.
What are you doing? Here, c'mon, shake. It was a good fight. Don't patronize me. I'm not! You had a good mixture of types and strong pokemon. Ugh, I liked Red better. At least he would shut up. No handshake, then? Forget it.
Take these and go away. I need to figure out why I lost. You know, this is normally the part where I'd try to offer some useful advice or calm you down. Hopefully, you're not going to do that now. I was thinking about it, but...nahhhhh. Eat a dick, Blue.
It's...it's him... It certainly is! Please, pay my lab a visit whenever you can! I'll be right there. Manic? ... ... Are you all right? ... ... Okay, the eyes bugging out thing? That's creeping me out big-time. OhmyArceusthatwastherealOakandhewantstoseemeinhislabwheneverIcanIcan'tbelieveI'mgoingtogettomeethim! Whoah! I'm scared! We're going to visit Oak right now! No way I'm missing this chance!
The...other you? He told me quite a bit about your situation. ... ... Mt. Silver should be an excellent training ground for your pokemon! ... ... Manic? Uh, maybe we oughtta just go. Yeah, look, uh, Manic's real real happy to meet you. We gotta get goin'. Maybe we can come back and visit sometime. Ah, your Alakazam can speak like a human! I once met a Meowth who...well, at any rate, take care of yourself, and good luck! Somebody collect the walking fangasm, and let's get outta here.

What can I say? Blue is Blue, who is also basically Gary. On his good days, he's merely obnoxious.
As for Professor Oak, I imagine it's like meeting Bill Nye for the first time. And hell yes I would gibber like an idiot at first.
Get ready, things are about to kick into high gear - this run is about 75-80% complete!

How embarrassing, though, to meet your childhood hero and be completely unable to speak clearly to the point that your Pokemon have to drag you away.

Update #37: The Bigger They Are
Puh-puh-puh... Manic, calm yourself. I don't think that's going to help. Just imagine him in his underwear, I hear that helps with nervousness. EUGH! Great, now, how do I get that image out of my head?! Is this a bad time? Humma, I...no! No! Please, continue! All right, then! First, I want to warn you. The other you told me that you intend to challenge Lance to a rematch. Be very cautious! His team caps out at level 75, and doesn't dip much below level 70 at all. Ouch. That's...ouch. That's extremely ouch! Now for the other matter. I'm transmitting the location of some legendary pokemon into your Pokegear. I was told that you need to defeat them in order to pass this 'test' you're in. Wow. How much did 'I' tell you? All of it, from what I can tell! The other you was very enthusiastic to see me. Now, that's all the help I can offer for now. Go get 'em, Manic! *click*
Guess this means another divergence. Is that a problem? Ehhh, not yet. Curtis, please explain. See, you're you. But the other you, that's you too. Right? Bein' in two different places at once, the laws of physics ain't too fond of that. Oh, I get it! So it's like a bubble and he's testing the boundaries...but if he tests too hard, it'll pop, right? Uh, yeah. How'd you know that? Heh! Not just another pretty face. Well then, we'll be quick. I've been told that two legendary pokemon will wander by here every so often. We can begin our...deicide.
Raikou and Entei... Are you okay? Is something wrong? I wonder if we're doing more harm than good. To this world, I mean. I'm not gonna lie to ya, pal. This ain't exactly environmentally friendly. Thing is, you gotta look at the bigger picture. WAY bigger. The multi-world picture? Ah, damn. Link? Not this stuff again. Can't we just go kick more legendary ass? Speakin' my language! Well, you heard them! Let's see here. This message from Oak says to speak to...the Copycat girl in Saffron? Really? Looks like it. Huh. I'm not one to doubt Professor Oak, so... Next stop, Saffron City!
Oh, right. This again. Oh, right. This again.
Vermillion City, huh? Vermillion City, huh? Wow, that's annoying. Wow, that's annoying. Hey, Mom, Dad? Hey, Mom, Dad? When I'm done mimicking this Manic guy, could you donate all of my dolls to charity? Thanks! ...! Thought so.
Okay, I have to admit, that was a little easier than I expected. Oh, it wasn't my choice. It wasn't? Oh, no! Pinkamena says she needs to go back. And Pinkamena is... The Clefairy, yes! She's a Clefairy princess, and her subjects need her. Rrrrright. Want me to hose him down? Not sure it'd help. Don't want to find out. Leaving now!
Oh! Excuse me, I didn't mean to bump into you. Quite all right. I...hmmm. Is something wrong? I don't believe so, but I'm getting the most curious sensation of deja vu. Want me to hose him down? What is it with you and asking that? No!
... Hello? It's weird: I'm getting that same odd sensation. Yes? That we've met before, I think. But I don't recognize you at all! I suppose it's possible that I would forget, but you're so young that it can't have been long ago. Very strange... I must agree. At any rate, it's been...intriguing...bumping into you, but I simply must continue my search. Although, as a trainer, you might be able to help. Oh? Well, I'm not opposed to lending a hand.
That's a legendary pokemon, isn't it? More target practice, hmm? That it is. Supposedly, it's roaming around Kanto at this very moment. And you want to defeat it? Heavens, no! How wasteful. I want to capture it. Uh oh. Can you imagine the power of a legendary pokemon in the palm of my hands?! It's not all it's cracked up to be, just trust me on this. Oh? I suppose you have one. Lugia. It's not on me right now, but yes. Look at me. ...Arceus, you're telling the truth! I am, and he's damn near insufferable. Do yourself a favor and stay away. Catching legendary pokemon is nothing but trouble. Haven't you learned from what happened in Hoenn twenty years ago, or in Kanto ten years ago? I see. I will take my leave of you now - I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name. Manic.
The devil you say. Goodbye, 'Manic'. Well, that was annoying and pointless. Time to go a-a-a-after it? In a minute. We can still do some good. What did you have in mind? The thing we came here to do in the first place. Oh yeah!
You realize we didn't a-a-a-actually need that. Of course. Grace is much faster and more convenient. It's not always about us, sometimes doing good is its own reward. She speaks! Er, you know, if you ask me. Which you didn't. It's okay, Farrah. I agree with you. Yeah, it's not like it cost us anything. Now, let's begin the hunt for this thing. The radar says it's just west of us!
ARCEUS, WHAT WAS THAT?! IT FELT LIKE A SONIC BOOM! I STILL FEEL THE GROUND SHAKING! THIS IS NOTHING LIKE THE OTHER TWO! FARRAH, GET BACK! THIS THING IS CLEARLY A FLYING TYPE! ARCEUS PRESERVE ME, FORGIVE ME MY SINS! LINK! GET BETWEEN IT AND FARRAH! CLAIRE! WE NEED YOUR DEFENSE, FRONT AND CENTER! ALL RIGHT, I'M DIGGING IN!
Oh.
... Wow. Uh. Mmmmyeah. Well. That was certainly, uhm. This never happened. Agreed. I hear that. Seriously. Can I come out now? So, let's see what's next on the list...Kanto has an electric bird, an ice bird, and a fire bird. Not entirely dissimilar to the beasts of Johto. Right. Now, if I was an electric bird, where would I go...
Called it. Obvious place is obvious. Now, don't boast, it's impolite. It's just sitting there. Waiting. Kinda eerie. Well, Edge is out for obvious reasons. Farrah too. I think the only one with a super-effective move is Claire. Would you do the honors?
Well, that didn't quite go as pla-a-a-anned. Sure you don't want me to give it a Rollout? Right! I forgot about Rollout. It's okay, switching would give it a free hit. Claire, could you give me an encore?
That stings! That much damage from a resisted attack?! Kinda wish we coulda caught it. Considering the difficulty with just one legendary pokemon, catching more seems to be a bad judgment call. Yeah, yeah... Let's remember to heal, then go find the ice bird. Unfortunately, there's only one place I've seen ice in Kanto...
I'm sure I don't have to tell you not to use me here. It's okay, everyone else should be able to handle it. I'm going to keep Link back too, though. How come? Where there's ice, there's water. Claire, I'm going to be relying on you a lot here. It's fine, I'm the reliable one.I beg your pardon? I'm just teasing. Did Claire just crack a joke?! These really are the end times!
Brrr-r-r-r! Everybody huddle up. Why, what're you WHOAH! Careful with the fire! Please! Maybe I can't fight, but I can keep you all warm. He is toasty-warm. Mmmmm. I, uh, I... Okay, okay, break it up. We need to get through this cavern.
Okay? Need a hand? Push the first one down, the second one up, and the third one in. If I ever need help with that... What did I say about boasting? Oh, come on. That was easy! Someone- hmmm. Oh, no. She's getting that exposition face! I was just going to say 'someone went to a great deal of trouble to put these here'. But who? Manic? Where're you going? Remember what we said about getting hung up on questions and answers? The puzzle is solved. Let's go.
You took way too long to reach, you know that? It's not gonna answer you. Oh. I sort of figured it was the Suicune-analogue, so. Ehhhhh, kinda? Just goes to show ya, you can lead a Squirtle to water, but you can't make it give a damn. Well then, if it has no useful words of wisdom...
Oh, now what is that?! I don't understa-a-a-a-a-and! It has a double weakness! You're sure we can't catch this thing? Maker, I knew this thing was tanky, but c'mon! Sorry. It's fine. One more good smack and down it goes.
Much better. Tha-a-a-a-at was emba-a-a-a-arrassing. I can tell. You're bleating more than usual. Oh, Arceus. What's the big deal? Huh? It's a legendary bird. You aren't even that much higher in level than it. So you couldn't one-shot it! Big deal. You came really close. Come on, let's get out of here! I'm starting to learn Harden. Oh! Because Vaporeons are water types, and it's cold. ...right. So, outside then! Wanna see what we coulda caught? Sure, why not?
POPO! Let's get the hell out of here. ^.^;
Hey, Manic. Yeah? Look, we really gotta do this? Let's consult the expert. Sorry, buddy. It's time. You got a couple'a legendaries left, but this one's next in line. I understand your feelings, Link. Suicune has been trying to help us and communicate with us this entire time, but there is no choice. Man, I wanna evolve into that! Oh, um, I don't think you can. ...it's not right. I know. Believe me, I know. Takin' out the other legendaries plays into the bigbad's hands, but you gotta do it to pass. Fine. Let's get it over with.
Oh, you have got to be kidding me.
Eusine. Hmmm? This is a painful moment for me. Yes, I see. I'll be right over here. Is this really necessary? Right over here. Fantastic.
Suicune. GEMINI CHILD. IT IS TIME. Sorry I couldn't lose Eusine for this. IT IS ALL RIGHT. TO SEE ME STRUCK DOWN WILL FINALLY BREAK HIM OF HIS OBSESSION, WITH LUCK. You knew this was going to happen. I DID. Isn't there some way around this? You don't deserve to die! AH, GEMINI CHILD. YOU COULD NOT KILL ME IF YOU TRIED. WHEN A SHARD IS DESTROYED, IT MERELY RETURNS TO THE HOST TO BE REBORN. I WILL NOT REMEMBER MY LIFE BEFORE MY REBIRTH, BUT I WILL YET LIVE. I guess that's some comfort. THREE QUESTIONS. ASK ME WHATEVER YOU PLEASE, WHILE I YET KNOW WHAT I KNOW. Oh! Well, let's see...
I could ask...no, that's...hmmm. TAKE YOUR TIME. No, I have my first question. THEN ASK. How many times has Varas lied to me? NONE. Then I- YOU ARE NOT THE ONE TRUE ORACLE, NO. DO NOT LOSE HEART, THOUGH; YOU HAVE A CLOSE CONNECTION TO THEM. It's okay, Curtis. You're still a valued ally. Uh, yeah. Lemme just go sit down for a sec, I gotta think.
YOUR SECOND QUESTION. Ah, right. I've got one. What's Anemoi's problem? LUGIA IS A VICTIM OF TIME. SEEK ANSWERS IN THE VASTNESS OF ETERNITY, AND ITS PAST SPECIFICALLY. That's awfully confusing. Can you do better? IT IS NOT MY PLACE. LUGIA'S PROBLEMS ARE PERSONAL. I ASSUME THAT YOU WOULD NOT WISH ME TO SPREAD YOUR SECRETS. Yikes. Fair enough. YOU HAVE ONE QUESTION LEFT. CHOOSE WISELY.
Um... Hey. I got one. Sure, okay. If I ain't the Oracle, how come I don't shift worlds even when he says my name after a gym? I SAID THAT YOU ARE NOT THE ONE TRUE ORACLE. I DID NOT SAY THAT YOU ARE NOT UNIQUE. NEVER DOUBT THIS: YOU HAVE PLAYED, AND WILL PLAY, A PIVOTAL ROLE IN MANIC'S PATH. Yeah? TRUST IN YOURSELF. WHEN THE TIME COMES, YOU WILL KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT. So I guess that means it's time, then. IT IS, GEMINI CHILD. TAKE HEART; WHAT YOU DO, YOU DO FOR THE GOOD OF US ALL. IT WILL BE GOOD TO BE UNBURDENED OF MY KNOWLEDGE.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Doesn't feel like a win to me. Sorry you had to off a friend. We're here for you if you need us. No...no, Suicune was right. This needed to happen. I think I understand now.
Eusine. I'm only going to say this once. Leave me alone.
Wow. He actually shut up and left for once! You'd have to be pretty dense not to notice the mood right now. No less surprised. Point taken. Supposedly, only three legendaries remain. One is in a cave close to here, one is in Mt. Silver, and one... One is Anemoi. Yes. You okay? I think so, yes. I had envisioned being a trainer as laughs and wins and friends, and it is that, but now I'm beginning to understand that it's also a lot more than that. I guess sometimes, it's about making the hard choices, too. Fortunately, you've got a badass team at your back. Heh, yeah. I guess I do. Now, let's see what all of that god-killing has done for your levels!
Training? TRAINING.

Poor Claire. Power Gem just isn't living up to its name, is it?
At least Latios was completely underwhelming, and the team was never in any serious danger.
And finally, Suicine gets to have an actual conversation, however brief. Apparently, none of the legendaries we're destroying are actually gone, just returned to their core to be reborn. I suppose that's some small mercy.

I'm going to assume this wasn't intentional.
While I'm here, I just gotta say that "How many times has Varas lied to me" is a reeally clever question. Nicely done, Manic.

Update #38: The Harder They Fall
And that's not going to be a problem, right? No, sir. We got the message. I'm glad to hear it. When Professor Oak tells you to let someone through, you step your ass back. Good man.
Wow. I didn't even know there was a Route 28! Sta-a-a-ands to reason. It's true. If Johto's route numbers pick up where Kanto's leave off...hmm. Hmmm? I wonder if it might have been one big region, at one point? Come to think of it, that does sort of make sense. Not that this isn't fascinating, but can we get moving? I wanna see this mountain of silver! Uh, Edge? I hate to break this to you... C'mon, don't tell me you don't feel the same way! Think of all the stuff we could get with that much money! Let it be, Link. He'll figure it out soon enough.
I already have a fire type, and he's much better than a Ponyta. Heh. Friendship is super-effective.
YES. This makes things so much easier! The strong pokemon here will be good for grinding. If you want. I don't think 'want' has anything to do with it, Farrah. If we're going to challenge Lance, we've got to get a lot tougher. All of us. Sure, yes, let's heal. Mountain of silver, here we come! Not going to try to correct him? Are you kidding? This is way too funny. Funny or no, the first thing we're going to do is explore the route. I don't want us getting taken by surprise! Awwww! Edge. It's a mountain. It's not going anywhere. Fine, fine. I guess I can share my fortune with anyone who sees it in the next few minutes.
Fortune, you say. Damn, this place isn't fooling around! Can I have the candy? We're going to save it for now. Might come in handy later. When is later? A time that isn't now. Which time? EDGE. Fine, fine. When I have all that silver, I'll just buy a bunch of my own. Manic, we should really do something about this. Yeah, I have to agree with you. Come on, let's go to Mt. Silver. About time!
Okay, this cave is not that dark. Correct! So, not seeing any silver. At all. Not even a little. Also correct. So why the tapdancing fuck is it called Mt. Silver?! It's just a name, Edge. GRRRRAAAA- Edge. Meep? You will calm yourself, reign in your greed, and stop embarrassing yourself in front of your teammates and trainer this very instant. I will not tolerate this sort of behavior. Do I make myself clear? Sorry. Very impressive. Didn't know you had it in ya! I used to help with some of the younger pokemon. You just have to know how to project an aura of authority. Right, well, this has been a learning experience for us all. Now, let's go train.
(Later...)
Well. This is certainly...glacial. Huhwha? Sorry, I zoned out. So...bored...AUGH... This is pretty monotonous, I have to admit. Manic, perhaps a break is in order? Yyyyeah...let's train just a little more, then go see about the legendary pokemon in Cerulean Cave. I can get behind that! I'd be happy to help, if I can. Just watch it. Can't really get a read on the thing, whatever it is. Another psychic? It's lookin' that way, yeah. Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll be underwhelming like the dragon one. ... No, huh? Not a chance.
Claire, can you help light the way? Me? Sure, with your tail. You remember Amphy? Certainly. It's been a while, I admit. Well, what he did...could you do the same? I can certainly try. Okay then! Let's get in there.
...Claire? All I can say is, A-a-a-amphy is a trained professional. So this is about all we're getting? Unless you've got a flashlight in that backpack. Let's see, what's that rule I always used to follow when I played Labyrinths and Legendaries... Played what? Oh, it's a role-playing game. You take on the role of a trainer and - well, nevermind. AAAAUGH. Nerd, nerd, nerd! Right, whatever. Something about keeping your hand on the left wall at all times.
A-a-a-admit it. You've been here before. How would that even be possible? Then how in the name of...? I told you, I used to play L&L. Every dun...er, cave is basically the same, once you know the rules. I don't know what's worse: the fact that your nerd level rose that much, or the fact that it's useful! Hey, in the end, it's the best brains that rule the world. Just you wait. In the meantime, let's continue, it's really dark in here.
GAH! Whoah! What do you want, trainer? It speaks! It isn't fond of repeating itself. What do you want? Mewtwo, right? Ugh, let me. Hnnnngh...get out of my head! Hey! Cut your shit! Be silent...Curtis. You cannot hope to stop me. Fascinating. Human, your mind is a treasure trove of information. Get OUT!
Strange. You bear me no malice, nor do you intend to capture me, nor befriend me. You have three seconds to disconnect your mind link with Manic before I start folding you into a paper airplane. Yeah, same here! I'm warning you! Very well. I have no quarrel with you, human...and while I have no doubt that I could defeat your entire team, I now know what I need to know. F-fine. The least you could do is tell me what I need to know, in exchange. A bold demand. Ask me your questions. Did you access my knowledge of the other world? I did. My alternate self seems to be a petty, grasping creature that paid the price for its ambition.
Why are you down here? Some time ago, I loathed all humanity. I sought to separate humans and their pokemon. Several trainers appeared, and - one by one - I cloned their pokemon, using much the same apparatus that created me. Duplicates were set against originals, myself included. It was an orgiastic maelstrom of violence, a travesty. A what? Lots of fighting. Oh. Cool. No, it was not. One trainer came between me and my predecessor, in an attempt to stop the combat. That trainer...died. Ouch. He was reborn shortly afterward, but he was different. Whatever he saw on the other side changed him. Silent and serious, he compelled me to look into his mind. I did so, and what I saw there made me realize that I needed to sequester myself away from the world and meditate on what I had learned. He sounds fairly impressive. He too remains sequestered, high atop Mt. Silver. He is the most powerful trainer in this or any region. His former name is lost to the sands of time, but he now goes by...Red.
If you looked into my mind, you must know why I'm here. I do. And you must know that it pains me to do this. As it should. Extinguishing a mind such as yours is practically a crime. There's so much we could learn from you. No, there is not. Come again? I have seen too much, I know too much. I am not fit to be among others; the knowledge I have would destroy you. I see. You do not. You can not. But you try, and that must be enough. For now, you will face me in the old ways. No tricks, no telekinesis. Your team's strength against my own. I believe you intend to lead with Claire. Er, yes. Feeding her those rare candies on the way here was a wise choice, Manic. She will need all her strength...for now, you will witness my power!
Well, Claire, you know what to do. I wish I did. Hey, are you all right? The burden you place upon her is a heavy one. This is the second intelligent being she has been forced to extinguish in a short time. Claire, I'm sorry. I wish it could be another way, but you have the best special defense in the team. I know. That doesn't make it easier, though.
First off, we're going to shore up your defenses. Five'll get you ten we'll be seeing Psychic in this battle.
I'll take that. Okay, I admit, I didn't see that coming. I didn't even know there was an attack like that! Be careful. I don't need to tell you that Mewtwo is highly intelligent.
That's...going to be a problem. Maybe not! Edge, what are you talking about? Weren't you listening to it talk? Well, yes! Maybe it's nothing. Let's watch! Fair enough. We've got a long road ahead of us, Claire; let's start hitting it!
I knew it! Do not become overconfident, Edge. *snap* I get it! Good ears, kid! Care to share your insights? No need. Mewtwo'll do it for us in a sec!
Wait. Isn't that a physical attack? Yes. Isn't it obvious? You heard how it described all that fighting. It doesn't wanna hurt is any more than we wanna hurt it! An' now that we know all four of its moves? It doesn't really stand a chance. You sound disappointed. Had you hoped for more death? No! I just don't want to cause any, is all. If more trainers thought as you do, perhaps the world would be a better place. In the interim, the words shared with you by Suicune should comfort you here as they comfort me; if I am truly a legendary, then I cannot truly die. Sure, but all that you've learned, all that knowledge... To know is not always a boon, Manic. I think...I think I would like very much to start over. Perhaps I will be reborn into a kinder world. ...do it, Claire.
Done. Manic? I'm...tired, Grace. I wonder if the other me had it easier with the feral version. Most likely, yes. Goodbye, Mewtwo. You weren't so bad after all. Let's get out of here. We've still got one more place to visit.
I never want to see this place again. Wish granted. Huh? I was tryin' not to say anything, but we're real close to th' end. How close, exactly? Hard ta say. The greater the danger, the cloudier things get, an' Lance an' his buddies are real dangerous. All I gotta say is, if we get past Lance, we gotta go find Red. Pffft. 'If'. As if we could fail! Lance is not to be taken lightly. He's capable of anything.
Okay, here we are. Before we go in...Grace, while we search for the fire bird, I want us to talk. Certainly. What's troubling you? I'm sorry that I couldn't be there for you at the time, but it's pretty clear that something happened. I see. Lance was supposed to release your father. Did he? Yes and no. Well, thanks, that clears everything right up. (Don't be snarky.) My father was free to go, but he chose to stay with Lance. Oh. Oh, wow. Grace, I'm sorry. I can't imagine why he would do that. I can. He was near-feral. I don't think he even recognized me.
Found it! Good job, Edge. Have a few candies, you might need them. Ch-ching! You shoulda seen it. It was freaky as hell. Manic, I got into his head. Nobody was home. Something's been done to him. Clues? Th' ball. Y'know that red flash when ya let somebody out? This one was green. Lance is controlling him somehow. I don't understand it, but it only looked like my father had his choice. And then...then there was the vortex...and then we were home again. Then our goal isn't just to give him the choice, it's to liberate him. Right. I want my father back, and I don't care what I have to do to get him. Easy, Grace. One step at a time. First, let's finish training. Then, I promise we'll go after your father. I never doubted it.
Oh, no! Look at that poor bird! Um? It's on fire! Uh, Edge, that's- Don't worry, I'll save you!
In the refrigerator! For a light snack! Edge. What? I beat it, it's mine! Edge, I'm not going to tell you again: you are not to eat the fragments of a god. Always cramping my style...tch. Whatever.
There's only one left now. Anemoi. But aren't you out of new towns? Hey, yeah, that's right. How will you- The other me will have to handle it. I still want to know how to deal with him, though; Suicune's words keep playing in my head. We just have to ha-a-a-ave faith that the other Manic heard them as well, and can figure it out. I guess you're right. Come on, we're not doing anyone any good standing around here. Let's clear our heads with some training.
(Even later still...)
At least everyone's largely caught up now. Is this where you want us to be? No. This just brings everyone up to speed with Edge and Claire. There's more?! You heard. Lance rolls with a team that hits level 75. I want us at least at 73 when we face him. Well then, there's nothing else for it. Back to beating up the locals. Ugh, it's getting so I see frightened Rapidash in my sleep! You gotta do what you gotta do, pal. Lance is a Grade-A asshole. We go in too weak, we're history. I couldn't have said it better myself.
(Even later still, OMG all the training, seriously, WTF Johto)
Manic. Edge? I SWEAR TO YOU, IF I HAVE TO OFF EVEN ONE MORE PONYTA OR RAPIDASH... Seriously, man. I think we've all had it. Everyone else agree? Definitely. You better believe it. I think I've learned to sleep-fight. Oh! Um. Sure, I guess? All right then. Let's get the hell out of here. FINALLY!
Nervous? Yeah. For a lot of reasons. Like? I don't know what the Elite Four will be like in this world. I'm worried about facing Lance. If we do beat him, what do we do with the vortex? Okay, I gotcha. So, what do we do? The only things we can do, really.
We make sure we're good and prepared.
We remove any obstacles in our way.
And we do a last-minute check...everything looks good.
And then we squash Lance's fruity little regime! BRING IT ON! Um, right. Don't hurt me.

At least it isn't GSC levels. Lance has no rematch version, but he's still the strongest trainer aside from Red.
If you play HGSS though, things pick up a lot quicker, since Gym Leader Rematches are a thing and are readily abusable.
Here's how I did it back in the day: Get a Gym Leader's number, and wait for the rematch window. We'll use Brock for an example. His rematch window is marked as Saturday Night. That means that from 8pm to 4am, you can battle Brock in the Fighting Dojo. Here's the fun part. Even if you've already fought and beaten Brock during his rematch window, you can call him again and get another match, no matter how many times you call.
As a result, I can face Brock enough times to level up several team members, since his levels are between 55 and 61. In fact, the one I wouldn't recommend doing this with in a Nuzlocke would be Blue, since his levels are between 69 and 72.

Gym leader re-challenges, huh...if it ever becomes an issue again, I'll try that!

Update #39: The Gauntlet - vs. Elite Four
Hang on a moment. Um? Sure, okay. What's on your mind, Grace? I have an idea, but I need your help. Of course, name it. First of all, I need us to hit the Move Deleter. Is this going to be one of those long, complicated just-get-on-with-it moments? Calm down, short stack. We'll get it done. Well, off we go, then!
Okay, that's taken care of. What is? You forgot Strength, right? Forgot what, now? Strength? Hee hee...sorry, I couldn't resist. Cute. What now? That Ice Beam TM you got while we were looking for Articuno? I'd like to use it, please.
Seems simple enough. This should help a lot when fighting Lance. Hey, Manic! Hmmm? If we're passing around the TMs, how about a little love over here? Sure, on the condition that you never ask me for 'love' again. *snicker* Hilarious. Okay, everybody huddle! Let's get our game on!
Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Much better! Hey, what about the rest of us? Edge, Farrah, Claire, all of you pretty much already have the ideal movesets. Oh, go on. No, really. I think we're just about ready to get this done! I'm inclined to agree. You're on notice, Lance; I'm coming for you!
Oh, uh, hi! Hmph. You seem different from before. So do you, come to mention it. You seem less grim. Less full of resolve, too. And you seem less friendly. Boy, you barely scraped past before with your team intact. You humiliated me and kept me down here in the lowest Elite Four spot. I've been waiting to face you with my real team. I think you might find my team a little different, too.
Oh? And what could you have that's so different? Funny you should ask...
This is Grace. She's got a bit of a bone to pick with your boss. She's a motherly type, but don't let that fool you; she hits like a freight train, as you can see. You had a Dragonite the entire time and you never used it?! Well, there's a funny story behind that. See, the 'me' you faced before wasn't the 'me' in front of you now. Enough of your doubletalk!
I could've sworn that your Typhlosion was female... That other one is. I told you, that wasn't me. This is Link. He's a pretty straightforward, no-nonsense kind of guy. A bit thick sometimes, but strong like a Tauros. Hey!
Oh, and here's Claire. She's the strong, quiet type. Great arsenal, though! Ma-a-a-anic! He doesn't need to hear about my- I said arsenal. And now an Ampharos...you couldn't have possibly had enough time...you really are different, aren't you?
Ain't that the truth! Ooooh, you have an Alakazam! I've always wanted one of those! Curtis may be a bit no-frills, but he's as loyal a friend as a guy could want. Would you trade- Nope. Awwww.
Well, it was nice meeting you for the first time again, Will. We really must be going. You're sure you won't trade? Completely sure. Oh well. You can't blame me for trying. I sure can't. Now, let's get everybody healed up... Meh, just a scratch. Sure, but Koga's up next...oh, wow... What? The real Koga is up next, I think. Not a robo-Koga. A robawha? I'll tell you later.
Koga? Hai. Hi yourself. You have come to challenge me. I have. But first, I have a question. Ask. It's about Janine. Stop. I know what you are about to ask. She was captured by a rival ninja clan as a child. That is all you need know. I see...I'm sorry. It is all right. She has come to terms with it, as have I. Thank you for your concern. So. Are you ready? I am. I also sense that you are not the same person I fought some time ago. How did you know? Even Will didn't pick up on that. Will is powerful, but unfocused. The mind of a true ninja remains honed to a razor's edge. I see. The mind is a very convincing weapon. Then you know-
Yes. Let us begin. Direct and to-the-point. I can appreciate that.
You need training. Beg your pardon? Your Dragonite is powerful, but she lacks finesse. Were our levels equal, she would be in serious danger. How rude! Wait, Grace. All right, Koga. What would you have done? An enemy that knows your true measure has an advantage over you. My Skuntank should have been dispatched with Fly, leaving Earthquake a mystery for the Muk to uncover. Hmmm. I see your point.
Tell me. Why did you use your Alakazam and not your Dragonite on the Swalot? First, I'd like to spread out the XP a little more. Second, Swalot has lower special defense. Excellent. That is true. Even so, your Dragonite is more likely to level through your voyage if you use her in more battles. Do not be afraid to exploit this. ...how did Bruno get to be above you? There is more to being a part of the Elite Four than skill and power. I see. Well, moving on...
You still use your starter, even though he did not fare well against my Crobat. Well, yeah. Rock Slide is a hell of a move. There is more than that. Okay, I admit, Link and I have been together since the beginning. He deserves his time in the limelight. Brofist. Anytime. Your bond serves you well, but take care; it can be used against you. Hmmm. I'll keep that in mind.
Manic. Hmmm? When your voyage is at an end, return. I would train you, if you would allow it. Maybe you should take him up on it. He really seems to know his stuff! I mean, you do too, but... I would be honored. ...I see. It pains me to hear what you did not say. What did I not say? You do not expect to survive your journey. ... Ah, he's full of it. Of course we're gonna make it! We're the best team around. Right? ... Oh dear. Take heart. You have untapped potential even now. When you return - and you will - I will be waiting.
Bruno! Well, this should be interesting. Huh? I know, I know, you're used to the other version of me, etc. ...huh? Uh, you know. I came through here a while back? Except it wasn't really me? I don' get it. Who turned out the lights? Seriously, talk much? Um, nevermind. So, do you know why I'm here?
Uh huh. Okay! So, maybe less with the witty banter for this fight... Huh? Exactly.
I got th' Hitmon triplets! Heyyyyy! What? That's cheating! What? What's cheating about it? Curtis is perfectly legit in every way. He's got those...weird brain powers. Well yeah, he's a Psychic type. Whatever...
Nnnngh...they're so strong! Sure, but you're stronger! Weather their attacks, strike when you can, I've got you on healing. Keep Aerial Ace up and running! How come your bug can fly? Because...she's got wings? Oh. Manic, I think something's wrong with him. Clearly. No, I mean, look how he barely moves. Come to think of it, that is fairly odd...
Man, this feels wrong. Bruno. Aren't you going to issue commands to your pokemon? Oh, uh, right. Lucario, use, uh... Are you okay? Yeah, I jus' need a nap. Well, the match is over, maybe it's time. Oh good. *zzzzz*
Curtis, help me out here. What's that about? Hard t'say. The guy's doped up enough to knock a Donphan out cold! He's a druggie? I don't think so. Guys like that get real proud of their bodies an' all that energy. But that doesn't make any sense... ...unless it wasn't his choice. He might have been drugged against his will. Come on, whatever our answers are, they aren't back here. Sleep well, Bruno. We'll be back with help.
Karen... Yes? What's the matter? Are you all right? I am, thank you for asking. You look shaken. Right, um. I think there's something wrong with Bruno. What kind of something? He was really listless during our match. At the end, he just dozed off! Tsk, I told them not to go so heavy on his medication. Thank you for telling me, Manic. I'll have him seen to. Wait, you did this? Don't you recall? Bruno has extremely violent tendencies. He uses medication to level him off, but it sounds like they got the dosage wrong again. One moment, please. Oh, uh, sure. Yes, medical? This is Karen. ...look, I don't care what you're doing, drop it and get Bruno taken care of. ...yes, right to sleep. ...you listen to me, his entire team just got knocked out! If any harm comes to that poor man, I'll have your heads! ...and see that you do! *click* I'm sorry, Manic. Where were we? Wow. You seem nicer than I remember. I know, it's a stereotype. Dark-type pokemon user, must be cruel and evil. I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that.
I know you didn't. Now then, shall we begin? Jumping right into it, huh? Sure, let's get started.
Interesting. A Heracross, you say. Farrah may be meek and modest, but she packs a hell of a punch. And a Bug/Fighting type, no less. A good choice. Now, let's see here...
Tch. How did you know? Simple. If I were you, I'd switch over to a flying type to handle Farrah. So, I switched over to something that could handle flying types. Interesting. Staying one step ahead, I see. What if I had chosen something else? Then you'd find that Link is still a powerful opponent. Anyway, next! Dibs!
Ow! Heh heh...good fight, good night! Your Vaporeon certainly seems, ah, exuberant. There's no better adjective to describe Edge, that's for sure. Exuberant, headstrong, and bold. A little too enthusiastic sometimes, but it serves him well. Well then, I'll switch to- Dibs! Edge, you don't even know what she's switching to! DIBS!
HAH! Who's the better eeveelution? I'm the better eeveelution! Well, it looks like she's going to- DIBS! What, seriously? I haven't gotten to fight even one match before now in the entire Elite Four! Dibs! He has a point. Besides, it might help him to work off some of that energy. Besides, if he gets a ba-a-a-ad matchup, you can always switch. Well, okay then. Stick around!
BO-RING! Okay, I admit, that was sort of a gimme. I must confess, your Vaporeon's personality is refreshing. Most of the line I've seen are reserved and a bit bland. Not me! I'm the best there ever was! Edge is very different from your average Vaporeon. Anyway, last one!
You sure you're still up to this? Are you kidding? Let's get this ball rolling! That looked like a 'yes' to me. Let's start off with Night Slash!
Arceus dammit, Absol! Oh. Um. Did she just do what I think she just did? How many times have we gone over this? Awkward... It's fine, go ahead, let the timer run. Serves me right.
Woman, do I look like the sort of guy who just sits there and lets the music wind down?! Well! That was certainly...expedient. Aheh! Yeah. That's Edge for you. Simmer down, it's over! Well, that was fun, mostly! Okay, I'm good. The rest of you can fight now.
That's right! Kicking ass and taking names. I think she means 'fighting with enthusiasm'. That's what I said! That I do, but more importantly, I mean giving all of your pokemon a chance to shine. Now, go and face Lance. Ah, and if you would, do me a small favor. Well, I'll try. What's on your mind? Lance has turned into a power-hungry egomaniac. Knock him down a few pegs, won't you? It'd be my pleasure. Speaking of fighting with enthusiasm! I suppose I should let you get to it.
Grace, we have a problem. I'm fairly sure I know what you're going to say, but go ahead. Lance will be sure to have an immensely powerful team. Even with Ice Beam, you'll be weak to their Dragon-type attack, and they'll out-speed you! I'm aware of that, and I have an answer for you. First, I want you to promise to switch me out only when I give permission. I need to be there to find my father. Grace, I- Promise me! All right. I...I promise. Good, because you'll need to switch me out at least once, possibly twice. I see. Care to explain to me why you know that, and what you plan to do about absorbing super-effective attacks that outspeed- hey! Let's see, I know it was in here somewhere... Grace, what's with digging around in my backpack?! Ah-HA! Found it.
All right. Now we're ready.

And that's how you rip through the Elite Four in a single update!
Every Elite Four member is markedly different from their other-world equivalent. Will is less friendly and a bit resentful for being beaten, Koga is...well, alive...and serious about his training, Bruno is so doped up he can barely move, and Karen actually has a decent streak.
But now...it's time to get real.
