Update #18: Reprieve - vs. Caitlin's MILF
New route, new catch. You don't seem pleased. Ehhhh...how can I put this? Poorly. Ahem. Anyway, Snover are neat and all, but they have seven weaknesses, and one of them is a double. Then why not let her go? Backup. Frankly, I'm...not assuming anything at this point. You never know when we might need her help. Hmph. Sensei knows what he's doing! I'm glad you're sure. Anyway, let's see what's up here...
Wait. What? Did we get turned around? No, that can't be right. Was that a route?! It appears so. That was boring! Remember between the second and third cities, how there were all those fights? Now, that was fun! Eugh. Trust me, I remember. Three or four routes and a cave. Let's NOT go back to that. Anyway, now that we're here...
...let's see what we can see! What's the big metal thing? Pick-up truck. I saw some in Unova, but I didn't think there'd be one here. I wonder if Mew is hiding under it. What? No, why would it? Nevermind. I wonder what the key is for. Something tells me we'll find out eventually. I'm just glad I use this Itemfinder a lot!
Hmmm. Anyone for a peek inside? So soon? Not for a match with the leader, just to see what the element is. Forewarned is forearmed. So wise... All right, let's take a quick look in.
Ice all over the floor, Strength puzzle...it's an ice gym! I might be of some help, then. Finally, I get to fight! Most of us resist ice in some capacity. Sure, rub it in. Okay, okay. Let's just have a quick battle with one of the trainers just to make sure.
Hey there. Battle? Nani? Heh, there we go. Our eyes met! Get 'em, Terry!
...that's not an Ice type. Maybe it knows Ice Beam? Yeah, but it's part Psychic. I remember what happened the last time I assumed a Starmie didn't know a Psychic attack. C'mon back, Terry. Let Yuki handle this. *sigh* All right. Most distressing. Hmm? A second fight, if you would. Sure, I don't see why not.
FUCK. Sensei? Focus, student. Why would Manic be upset? Because...he doesn't like this pokemon? Does that seem probable? No. Hmm. Because he didn't really want to fight? I assure you, if Manic had not wanted to fight, he would not have fought. Because he just figured out this gym's element. Correct. It's a psychic gym. The ice is a ruse! Which means...
Which means that four out of the six of you are weak to the gym's element! Yuki, Hisao, I'm going to be relying on you two for this. Again?! I'm sorry, Terry! I don't want to lose you. I don't want to lose anyone. How will I ever get stronger if you don't use me in combat? Concern for a pokemon? How uncharacteristic. You do not know Sensei as we do. Student. What shall we do now? Get it over with? You have much to learn. Now, we get out of here, regroup, and think things over.
Okay, this seems like a quiet place to gather our thoughts. So we run? No. We stop, and we consider our options. Let's see. This isn't going to get easier based on typing...we have to play it smart. That would be a nice change. The more I think, the more sure I am that Hisao and Yuki will be getting a serious workout. Sensei? What is Unova? Ah, yes. Perhaps a re-telling of your story is in order. Hmmm. You have a good point, since half the team hasn't heard it. Well, it all started back when I moved to Hoenn...
(cue re-telling of story up to this point)
...and that brings us here. Either you're the most talented liar I've ever met, or you've lived a hell of a life. It's nonsense. Other worlds, Darkrai, Cresselia, all these other version of you...utter nonsense. Sensei, do you...do you believe this? I do. He was my student, once. Still am, really. The scars of his voyages may not appear on the outside, but they do show. Well, that's not comforting at all. All right, then. I'll believe too. Thanks, Nobuo. You're welcome, um, Manic-sama.
All right, team. We're in the heart of darkness here. Let's have a talk. What's the matter, Sensei? Nothing, Terry. I just want to plan, is all. Finally. Here's where we stand: we're in Team D.H's hometown. If we're going to rid this world of the disease they represent, we strike here. Sensei? The first thing we do is beat the gym. I'm pretty sure your levels are adequate, but I plan to employ a strategy to demoralize the leader before we beat them. After that...
After that, we strike them down once and for all. Sensei, are you all right? Hmm, I see. You definitely sound different. As you like. Anyway, I'm betting the HM for Waterfall is in here somewhere. We get that, head southeast, go up that waterfall, and the eighth gym has to be in there somewhere. Once we beat that, we head for the League. That ought to get Darkrai's attention. Sensei, what's going on? He has found his strength once more. There is hope yet. Everyone clear on what we're doing? After we beat this Darkrai. You release me, right? What? Well, sure, if you really want me to. Then I will help. And the rest of you? Let's go take them down! Of course. One step at a time. That's what you pay me for. To be as great as Sensei, no mountain is too high! All right, then. Let's go beat that gym!
Hate...strength...puzzle... Good thing you have me to do your heavy lifting. Right. It's okay, simple enough. Just have to push the rock onto the red pad. Over...and over...and over. I'm glad we're almost done. Even I have limits. You said it. That's the last one, let's-
WHAT.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS. The boulders are moving back and forth...on their own? How can this be? A combination of raw psychic power and intense focus and discipline. This will not be an easy fight. I think this gym was made by people who hate you. Okay...okay...there must be a way through. There's some kind of pattern. Let's just get started.
(I HATE THIS PUZZLE! It took me something like an hour to get past it!)
This gym was made by sadists. Congratulations, we've found something I dislike more than you. Why do you talk like that to Sensei? What did he do to you? If you sat and thought about it, you'd figure it out pretty quickly. Enough. I have to agree with Yuki on this one. The leader is in front of us. And, to that end...
What are my orders? Yuki is going to go out first. With her powerful attacks and lightning speed, she can hopefully score a number of single-hit kills. If she falters, you step in and absorb some hits while I heal her. Kill as needed. My favorite order. I will not fail you, Sensei. I know, Yuki. You never have. Now, let's get this started.
Sorry, lady. I don't know what you're saying and I don't care. Any gym leader that lets D.H operate out of their back yard has already lost my respect. Yeah! Hmm? Um, sorry, Sensei. There is no need to be sorry. Cheer as you feel it is warranted.
Whoah. You're, uh. Keep it in your pants. Wow. Somebody forgot to get dressed today. Manic. Hmm? ...ah, I get it. Very nice. Distractions. I think she's noticed that you've seen through them. All right, here we go!
Okay, Yuki. Let's try to get you set up a little bit. Very well, I AAAAAGH! YUKI! Sensei, she can't withstand another hit like that! Send me in! No! Terry, I came in with a contingency plan, and it's time to use it. Hisao, you're up! Yuki, take a Hyper Potion!
Nothing personal. Just business. All right. Yuki, are you up for another try? I...I believe so, yes. Good job, Hisao. I'll make sure you're well-compensated. Now for round two!
All right, Yuki. Hit it with a Shadow Ball! S-so...strong...! What, again? Combination of Hammer Arm and Clear Body, huh? Very clever. All right, Hisao. You can do this! But Hisao is weak to fighting! He is indeed, but pay close attention.
Amazing... We are more than our elemental affinities, student. Manic knows this; he knew that Hisao's defense would weather the assault. Sensei, have you noticed that she hasn't said a word all this time? I'm guessing that she's telepathically commanding her pokemon. People can do that?! Psychics can, sometimes. If they're powerful enough. My guess is, she was controlling a lot of those boulders. Yuki, are you up for another try? I'm sorry, Sensei. Another surprise like that might be my last. All right. Hisao, stay in. I'll heal you right out. Hmmm. Why does this pokemon look familiar?
AAAAGH! Shit! It knows Fire Blast! Hisao, speak to me! Heal...Yuki...you're going to need her...after this... Hisao, if I leave you in, you're going to die! I knew it might...be part of the job. Do what needs to be done... It's preparing another attack! Fought and died well...all I could hope for.
No. Iwao, get out of there, it might know a Psychic move! Listen here, cat. The trainer may be an idiot, but these are innocent pokemon. You're not taking even a single one of their lives. Stop talking like that!
I could use a Burn Heal over here. Wait, why didn't...Arceus, it doesn't know any Psychic moves! Then why does she have it? Probably the same reason Bruno has Rock types or Agatha uses Golbats. To keep the others in line! Iwao, here, take it! Hmm. Better. All right, Iwao. I gave you that TM for a reason, let's use it!
Done. Awesome! Now get back. Also done. I want to go in. Yuki, are you sure about this? It might- I. WANT. TO GO. IN. *gulp* Right! In you go.
I promised Sensei that I would not fail him, and I will not!
Yikes! All right! Way to go, Yuki! Remind me not to get you angry. Sure fine well done whatever. Would you care to repeat that?! I said well done! Calm down! Ah. Thank you! Oooookay. Um, Hisao, would you be so kind as to rescue her last pokemon from Yuki?
I don't think she was expecting anyone as powerful as we are. Are you suggesting that we did some overgrinding? Maybe a little? Hisao, they're fifteen levels below us and still endangered you and Yuki both. Fuck that noise, we grind as much as we need to!
Anyway, let's go get healed. We've got a lot of work to do. Sensei, do you realize what we've done? Kicked ass? No one died! Perhaps our bad luck is at an end. Not buying it. No? If there's one thing I've learned throughout my voyages, it's that raw, random chance can always be defeated. Whether it's grinding more, or choosing better attacks or held items, or anything else, good planning beats random flukes 99 times out of 100.
Carmen. Anata wa watashitoisshoni kite iru! < You have to come with me! > Whatever it is, it sounds pretty urgent. Watashi wa chimu D.H ni sen'nyu suru tame no junbida! < I'm preparing to infiltrate Team D.H! > I don't know what you said, but I heard D.H in there. I'm in. When do we go? Watashi ni shitagatte kudasai! < Follow me! > Okay, okay. Just a quick heal, and...
It's time to bring the pain.

Welp, only one gym left to go. I already know what I'll be highlighting there. That aside, I've got three to cover this time, and two are directly related. So let's start with them, meet Psycolt and Kinegasus. Psycolt Pokedex: Beautiful flowers sprout from the ground wherever it treads. Seeing this Pokémon is said to bring good luck.Kinegasus Pokedex: Large wings sprout from its back. The elegant attacks it can dish out with them are truly a beautiful sight.OK, so according to the wiki, you want to reach level 45 before evolving Psycolt because it learns Psychic around that point, while Kinegasus gets the short end of the stick, because its attack stat is 84 (compared to its special attack which is 109) but five out of the eight attacking moves Kinegasus learns by level up are physical. It does get a good variety of moves via TM though, including Energy Ball, Signal Beam and Heat Wave. The catch is, Psycolt has two branching evolutions, and the other one apparently does its job much better.
With them out of the way, let's look at the other new Fakemon for this update, Bakeko! Bakeko Pokedex: Those who happen to meet this Pokémon are said to be destined for something. No one knows what, though.Yeah, this one is a bit of a curveball. Despite being on the Psychic Gym Leader's team, it's actually a Fire/Dark type and doesn't have any Psychic moves during the battle. So it being used in the Psychic Gym seems to be there more to screw with the player should they use a bug type, especially since it packs Fire Blast during the Gym battle. Statwise, this thing is a mixed sweeper. Defense stats are 55 and 50 respectively, while both attacks and the speed stats are 105, 110 and 95 respectively. Couple that with 65 HP and you end up with a Pokemon that struggles to take hits, but can dish out some good damage. As for moves, its mostly Normal, Fire and Dark for the level up moveset, but as usual, the TMs are where the variety comes in. Flying, Electric, Bug, Poison, Ghost and Psychic types all get to add some coverage in. There is a catch though. If its Pre-evolution, the Fire/Normal Maneko, doesn't learn Flamethrower before evolving, then you're having to use a TM to get it. Maneko learns it at level 47, but evolves at level 18, so that's a very awkward situation. Anyway, I can't remember what's coming next for Team D.H., so I have no idea what I'll be highlighting next. See you next time!

Update #19: Mini-Ghetsis 3: Ghetsis with a Vengeance (featuring Nega-N)
Sensei, what is that? That, Terry, is a Beldum. It doesn't look like much. No, it wouldn't. And in fact, it's not, at the moment...but it evolves into a Metagross, a ludicrously powerful Steel/Psychic type. Are you going to train it now, Sensei? Not quite yet. If it comes to that, I will, but I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that; it'd need more than 50 levels to catch up. I doubt we have that kind of time. Time is one resource we do have. We should make use of it. And we will, but for now, it can get to know the other pokemon in the box. Besides, where we're going...
...I wouldn't dare bring anyone who isn't ready.
Ah-HA! Is that what the key is for? Exactly, Nobuo. Something tells me that we wouldn't get anywhere without this key. Where do we go? Everywhere. One floor at a time. We're going to establish a perimeter of defeated D.H grunts, and work our way inward. A sound strategy. Shall I lead the charge? Actually, no. I want Yuki in front. May I ask why? To be honest? I'm worried about you, Yuki. I want to get you some training. Then you find me lacking. Not at all! And I want to keep it that way. Very well.
A...poke-flute? Be careful, Sensei! It could be a trap! I don't think so. Look at his expression. Watashi wa, wareware ga hikiokoshita subete no mondai no tame ni moshiwake arimasen. < I am sorry for all the trouble we have caused. > He actually looks penitent. It's okay, friend. Just stay here and keep quiet. Sore wa daijobu, yujindesu. Chodo koko ni taizai shi, shizukani. Hai!
A gauntlet of trainers. We must be going the right way. Do not be certain. A canny leader would set this as a trap. Then these D.H people are canny? The first time we met, they nearly destroyed me and the entire team. Hmph. No wonder you kidnapped me. You need me. But Sensei didn't- Let it go, Terry. You figured it out, Iwao. I need your strength. You'll be returned once I'm free. You gain my respect for honesty and lose it for cowardice. Let's continue, I have things to do.
(Eventually, after a LOT of fighting and sliding around...)
You. Anata. < You. > This will be our last battle. Kore wa watashitachi no saigonotatakai ni narimasu. Hai. When you lose, I will have you arrested. Anata ga ushinau toki, watashi wa, anata ga taiho sa renakereba narimasen. Anata ga ushinau toki, watashi wa anata ga korosanakereba narimasen. < When you lose, I will have you killed. > All right then. Let's go. Hisao, I want you in front; remember, he always leads with his Houndoom. Understood.
My employer wants you dead.
And so you are. He's so aloof, Sensei! I do not approve of his reason for killing, but at least he takes no joy in it. It's bad to enjoy combat? No. Combat is natural, an expression of self. One should never enjoy the taking of a life. I understand. All right, Hisao. You're injured. Come back, let Yuki put all that training to good use. As you wish.
How did you know, Sensei? I didn't. But I know he has a Starmie, a Skarmory, and a Gengar, and you have a super-effective move against two of the three. And if he had chosen Skarmory? Then I would have switched you out. He didn't, though. Would you be so kind? Ah, of course.
Straightforward and simple. Just how I like it. Now we have a 50/50 chance of guessing right. Indeed we do. What will you do? Yuki, are you willing to take the chance? I am not a fragile flower. I can and will fight on your behalf. All right, then. Next up!
Aaaand that's what I was hoping to avoid. Sensei? Don't worry, Yuki. I'm not leaving you in against super-effective STAB attacks. But who to send? Get out of the way. Did I mention that it has a Ground type attack? Urk... So it has Yuki, Iwao, and Terry...that leaves Hisao, Nobuo, and Hideo. Sensei. I have been very patient. I have been with you through every fight against this man. Please, grant me permission to end this match!
Terry, did you miss what I said about a Ground type attack? Remember? I don't care! Every time we're in danger, it's "hold back, Terry" or "I don't want to risk you, Terry" or "it has a super-effective move, Terry". What is the point of my life if I shy away at the slightest sign of danger?! Terry! You mustn't t- Shhh. Let him speak. Is my power meaningless to you? Am I a high-level translator? ... You should never talk to your Sensei like that! Be quiet. He has this coming. Answer me! ...you're right, of course. I didn't even realize it, but I've allowed this world to frighten me into holding you - all of you - back. After all we have seen, you are right to be afraid. Maybe, but I'm not right to force all of you to restrain yourselves and be victim to this ni... ... ... Sensei? Oh, how fucking obvious is that! Terry, get in there and kick that thing's ass!
I'm scared too, Sensei, but I'm not going to let it stop me! I've seen how our losses affect you, and I know it's hard to bear, but maybe...
...if you can believe in us...
...we can believe in you, too! Touching. I think my stomach is upset. Be silent. Who are you to tell me- *GLARE* ...right. Silence, then. I knew you could do it, Terry! Now, he's got a Gengar on standby. I could switch back to Yuki... Don't you dare! Ha! Just teasing. Come on, let's finish this off!
And that's the end of that. Is it? No. There's still the other guy. I don't know who he is, but based on how he's just sitting there, I'm guessing Mini-Ghetsis here isn't the boss. He looks familiar, somehow. I feel it too... Well, let's go up and ask, then. After a bit of healing, of course.
Yeah. I remember too. Sensei, what is he talking about? It seems that they have met before. You don't know? This was before I met Manic. It seems that only Yuki, Terry, and Manic know who this is. I don't remember him at all! Remember back in Route 503?
Tso didn't trust him back then. Tso...I had almost forgotten. Our first loss. Turns out he was right. All right, buddy. I don't know who you are, but I know who you resemble, so I've decided on a fitting name for you.
Nega-N. That has to be the dumbest name- After that boy in your story, right? Good call, Nobuo. Correct. N was a good person, he was just misguided. Look at this guy. Tell me what you see. Look at his stance. Aggressive, even hostile. His clothes are pompous and unnecessarily fancy, and his expression tells me all about how angry he is. If anything, he bears more of a resemblance to Varas than N, but with none of the angst. Let's put an end to his group here and now! I couldn't have said it better myself. Terry, you lead!
I have to admit, I'm a bit surprised it fell to a single Sludge Bomb. What is this power? Storing your strength for so long has left you with an excess. Sensei, can you teach me to do that? Perhaps, in time. All right, we need to stick and move. Hisao, you're up! Very well.
Ffffffuck, a Magmortar! Surely, Hisao is more than a match for it. Maybe, maybe not. I remember that Magmortars are fast, and they pack a massive punch. Shall I dispatch it? Not worth the risk. Terry, are you okay to fight this one, too?
I feel like I could fight a hundred of them! Heh...okay, okay, let's just stick with one for now. Sound good? Sensei, may I take the next one? Do you wish to learn to store your power? Yes, but-
Then allow me. You're a fool, old man. It resists Fighting attacks. It is good, then, that I am not limited to Fighting attacks. You're not? Remember, I have the power of water at my disposal as well. Watch closely. Water Gun?! You're going to defeat a Nidoqueen with Water Gun?! Old man, you must be mad! Hideo, please. I urge you to allow me to fight. Manic, what do you say? I have confidence that you could beat that Nidoqueen with Water Gun, but we can train later. Let's focus on winning now. The stakes are too high, and I'd rather leave nothing to chance.
Very well. Thank you, Sensei. Hmph. Sensei could have done it better. Nobuo. I will not tolerate disrespect for your teammates. Apologize. I am sorry, Yuki. You did well. All right, team. Stay focused. He still has one pokemon left.
(And here's where the game froze. No, seriously. My last save? Before even entering D.H headquarters. So I struggled to recreate circumstances as closely as possible.)
(Okay, close enough.)
Goodbye.
It's chilling, how he does that. Be grateful that he's on our side. Not a pokemon I'd want to meet in the dark. The deed is done. I must make a report. I will be back soon. Hisao... You know better than to ask what you are about to ask. Right. We'll be waiting for you in town.
Where did they go?! Gone. Gone where? Just gone, like they never existed...because they didn't. I don't understand. I do. Steven Stone, Wallace, Dialga and Palkia, Mini-Ghetsis and a dark N...Darkrai is trying to frighten me away with images from my past. Why would it do that? Fear. If I defeat it here, in its own world, in its last-ditch effort, that's it. It will have failed to deliver on a bargain with a mortal, and I'm guessing that won't go well for it. I am beginning to wonder if you truly are insane, as I suspected. If I am, then so be it. I can only walk the path in front of me, just like everyone else. Come on, let's clean up in here.
Thought so. Sensei, a question: why did Darkrai not simply stock Route 501 with level 100 pokemon? A valid question. Somehow, I get the feeling that even the gods have to follow certain rules. My suspicion is that it can tweak levels somewhat, but it has to follow certain guidelines, or the world doesn't work. How could you know such things? The fact that he's still alive says it all. Actually, yes, Iwao has it right. If it could just fry me with a lightning bolt, I'm thinking it would've done that a long time ago. We're all playing this game within the rules set forth to us; it can make my victory a longshot, but it can't make it impossible. Now, let's get out of here.
Here you go. I will use it with pride. I see. I expected it to be me, to be honest. Sorry, Yuki. We need Ren to get us up that waterfall, and you've outdistanced everyone else in your training. Let others have a chance. Understood. I will wait, and I will teach the others. I have such stories to tell. I know you do. All right, let's get going. I know just where to use this thing!
I don't know how it works. It just does.
Why west? I'm reminded of an old puzzle-solving technique I learned: in a maze, keep your hand on the wall to your right as you walk, and no maze can beat you. And? This world is a construct of something that wants me dead. It probably knows that rule as well as I do, so I'm doing the exact opposite: ignoring the walls and going left. We'll just explore every path until we find the one we want.
A town, here? Not a true town. Notice the lack of a pokemon center. That bodes ill. It does. Not only can we not heal, we can't switch pokemon out. Yuki is stuck in the PC until we find one. What do we do now? We explore. See the sights. Talk to people. Maybe we can find a clue.
Or maybe we can find someone selling pokeballs. If we still needed any, I'd be all over it. For now, let's go.
I know that name, somehow. I am a professional. I will maintain my composure. Hmm? Fire Island? I should do well here! oh Arceus Yes, I'm...sure you will. Just remember, so long as we're on Fire Island, watch your ass.

Wow, looks like Nega-N/Not-Varas went down pretty easily. Right then, time for today's second highlight corner! No new Fakemon in the update again, so I've got 2 families of Fakemon to show off. Let's get things started with Willisp and Wisplode. Willisp Pokedex: A nocturnal Pokémon. Sightings of ghosts or floating fireballs usually turn out to be a wild Willisp.Wisplode Pokedex: The bits of fire that surround this Pokémon's body move as if they each had a mind of their own.
OK, so this one evolves with a Fire Stone. Looking at the stats, this line is actually fairly decent as a special tank. Physical attack is only 55 and the defense on that side is 65, but outside of those stats, everything else is workable. Speed is the third lowest with 80, and special defense is the best stat at 115. As for moves, it has some worthwhile status moves as well as a good variety of high power special moves. Not bad for a pure Fire Type. Yeah, it's pure Fire. Just based on the design, I'd have gone with Fire/Ghost.
While I've pointed out the English name it was given after the first Gym, I've not given this one a proper highlight. Let's fix that by covering Rollder and its evolution Rotillo. Rollder Pokedex: When it goes into a defensive stance by rolling up its body, attacks bounce off it harmlessly.Rotillo Pokedex: It moves around by rolling in order to protect itself from predators. A herd of them rolling by is an awe-inspiring sight.Evolves at Level 25. From Bug/Rock to Rock/Steel, this Pokemon's definitely a physical tank. The main problem with that role though is HP. Rotillo's HP stat is only 45. I was surprised by this line's speed stat though. It's got base 80 speed. For moves though, there's not much coverage. I see Normal, Rock, Steel and Fighting, but it does get Electric, Bug, Ghost and Ground through tutors. On the plus side, its sole weakness is Water. See you all next time!

Update #20: No 'Mon is an Island
Well, at least it's...cute? You're not going to use it, are you? At this point, I'm not prepared to definitively say that I will or won't bring anyone onto the team. The future remains uncertain. So you might box one of us at any time? At this point? Unlikely. Unless the unthinkable happens, my team is probably pretty well set, barring the need for help from 'mon like Ren here. Anyway, c'mon, let's have a look around.
Huh. That's actually not so bad. I hate mazes! We get in, we do what we need to do, and we get out. Simple. Speaking of which, what do we need to do here? I don't know yet, Iwao...but I know these wouldn't be here without a reason. For now, we search.
What, again? B-but that's a legendary bird! Yeeeeah, uh, about that. Don't forget, Sensei has defeated the legendary birds once before! Thrice, actually. Thrice? Well, there was the first time in Kanto, as Self-Aware. Yes? Then there was the time I had to find them in Sinnoh. Oh, I forgot about that. And the time in Johto. Hmm. And my teams were much lower-level then. Iwao, go hit that thing with a Diamond Blast. Uh...
Look, it's simple. That thing is a 100%-accuracy Rock move. Moltres is doubly-weak to Rock. You'll one-shot it. Yes, but- Come on, the sooner you do this, the sooner we can leave. If you'd just listen- Fine, fine. What's the big pro- SHUT. THE FUCK. UP.
THAT. THAT IS THE PROBLEM. How did I miss that? You missed that because we did some grinding and you forgot to go back to heal us, you imbecile. Hey! Wow. Epic-level derp on my part. Sorry about that, Iwao. Terry, could you step in and do the honors for me? I'd be happy to! Thank goodness someone still has PP left. Be quiet! No, Terry. He's right. That was a dangerous mistake to make, especially going into unfamiliar territory. It won't happen again.
That was easy! You have twenty levels on it. It had better be. Sensei, I don't understand. Aren't the legendary birds beings of great power? Indeed they are, but they are not without their flaws. In other words, everything has a weak point. Attack it for massive damage. ...not quite how I would put it, but sure, that works.
So. That pretty much settles that. Settles what? Where there's Moltres, there's bound to be Articuno and Zapdos. I'd bet my life savings that the other two will be an electric-themed island and an ice-themed island. Ahem. Buuuut, before we go exploring them, we have something we need to take care of. Find a PC and get Yuki back? Work on our training? Not exactly.
Much better. I could have kept going! Sure, but you're not exactly alone in this, Terry. Many of the others badly depleted their PP. I think we'll come back here after each island. That's better. Sensei, can't we get Yuki back now? We could...but we still need Ren to get up that waterfall, and she's still more advanced than anyone else. I'm not that bad, am I? No, no! You're fine! You're just not Yuki... Easy, big guy. We'll get her back soon enough. For now, let's get back to those islands.
Aaaand it's raining. I don't mind! A refreshing rain can wash away the day's worries. Of course you don't mind, but I'm thinking Hisao and I both feel otherwise. Hisao? Of course. I just don't whine about it. You...! *giggle* All right, everyone settle. Of course it rains here; that way, water moves will get powered up. Anything immune to a 100%-accuracy Thunder (meaning, a Ground type) will take extra damage. Hmph. Let's duck in here out of the rain. Maybe this guy will sell something more useful than pokeballs.
SIR, I LOVE YOU WITH MOUTH. *cough* It's...the most beautiful thing I've ever seen... Easy, Nobuo. Easy. Sorry about that outburst. I'll take 99 Lum, 99 Leppa, and 99 Sitrus. And the others? Honestly, those three cover most of our needs...but we'll come back if we need more. Now, we have other, more pressing matters to attend to. Hmmm, the Itemfinder is indicating something is here...
Is that...IT IS! It looks like a Potion. Oh, Terry. This is so much better than a Potion! Very nice. That will come in handy. You know what it is? Omni Medicine. Cures all status ailments and completely restores HP. Where I'm from, we call it a 'Full Restore'. We're saving this for a very special occasion. Now, let's go inside and find Zapdos.
Wow. This one sure put up a fight! I am told that weakening a pokemon is helpful in catching it. Sure, but look at us; anything we did would have one-shotted it. I'm just glad Iwao still knows Flatter. Not that it did a lot of good. It did enough good. We have a new teammate.
Okay, this one should be easy. Effortless. What about me? Terry, it's packing electricity. Let's not take unnecessary chances, okay? Hisao is immune to electricity and resists pretty much anything else Zapdos might be packing. And me? Flying attacks. Again, Hisao is the better choice. Just sit back and watch me work. You might learn something.
(A few Iron Heads later...) Done. I didn't learn anything, and I was watching the whole time! I didn't learn anything either. I can't use Iron Head, so I can't do that! Correct. You must find your own path. And that's what you learned: that you can't do what I do. Be glad.
A quick stop-off for a heal...
Is anyone surprised by the snow? Surprised, no. Annoyed, yes! That makes sense; you're the only one of us with a weakness to Ice. Yeah, thanks for the reminder. Settle, you two. Iwao, you're going to be on-deck for this; Articuno has the same double-weakness as Moltres, except this time, you'll be in a position to capitalize on it. You're going to send me out to fight an Ice bird. An ice bird twenty levels below you. But first...
Okay, seriously. I love these islands. I think I'll take one of everything, just in case. Do not become overconfident. You've seen my bankroll, Hideo. This doesn't even make a dent. Besides...
...there's an immediate benefit. So powerful! Please discuss the matter with me before teaching my student new moves. Sorry, Sensei... Your... Yes. Remember that lessons must be taught when the time is right. ... ... Right...sorry. It's easy to forget. The discarded memories of the present become the repeated mistakes of the future. You would do well to keep this in mind. Understood...wait. Is that - that looks like -
FINALLY! We can get Yuki back! Actually... Sensei, she's not that far ahead of us anymore! No, she's not, but that's not why I'm going to hold off. Why, then? Because there's someone else who's been tirelessly working for us without a word of complaint - hardly speaking at all, actually - and I think she's due for a reward.
M-me? You've been helping us with rocks and waterfalls and all sorts of things. The least we could do is help you evolve. I don't know what to say... I recommend 'thank you'. Thank you! Just hang back, let us handle the heavy work. Watch what they do and you'll be done in no time.
Oh well. We already have a good Ice user. We do? ...you're joking, right? Oh! I'm sorry! I forgot! She's just not here, and she has so many other types of attacks... Nobuo. Huh? Every word digs you a little deeper. Let it go. But- You will obey Manic as you obey me. Let the matter drop. Nnnf...yes, Sensei.
Let's...just...hurry. Hmmm. Here, Iwao. Use this. What's this? What are you doing? Where I'm from, we call it a 'jacket'. *snicker!* I know what it is. Why are you giving it to me? Because you're cold? What do you care? Sensei cares about his pokemon. When are you going to accept this? Shut up and let me fight. You're welcome. ...hmph. Thank you.
Bam! Nice. Good. Can we leave now? Sure. I think we're done here.
Here's your jacket back. Hmm. Where do we go now, Sensei? According to this, we go east a little bit, then north. Way, way north. I'm ready to go! Me too! That's the spirit!
(Eventually...)
Okay, where the hell are we? Something about this place bodes ill. ...if Hideo says this place feels wrong, we need to be extra-careful. I'll stay on my guard, Sensei! Dragging us into danger again? I will go where I am ordered. Sensei? Hmmm? Now can we go get Yuki? Just a minute, let's take care of this first:
Okay. Now we can go get her.

You know, before this run (and for a while after), I'd never seen a prominent party member that had as much vitriol towards their trainer as Iwao does towards Manic. I know the reason why, but I'll comment on that part when the reveal happens. On my side of the fence, I really don't have much to cover today as far as new Fakemon are concerned. Maneko Pokedex: The high body temperatures required to produce flames inside its body often cause it to collapse from heatstroke.Geez, that is seriously morbid. But I digress. I don't actually have to say anything about this Pokemon, because it turns out that I've already covered the evolution! Remember Bakeko from the Psychic Gym? The one that was actually Fire/Dark? Yeah, Maneko evolves into that.
Yeah, that's this update covered. You know what though? Going from the start of the Pokedex, I've covered nearly every Fakemon up to Rollder's line. There's just a couple I'm holding back until later. So, moving down to the next line after Rollder, we have a 3-stager, the Mornwing line! Mornwing Pokedex: Its ferocious vigilance is its greatest strength. It often attacks the second it sees another Pokémon. So this one's an aggressive little bugger. Still, I do like the design. According to the wiki, it used to be called Embird, which I'd say works just as well. Guldawn Pokedex: Its beauty is only surpassed by its incredible power. Its body is as burning hot as its flaming wings.OK, not a bad design. I dig it. It used to be called Flambént. Solarisen Pokedex: When this Pokémon is sick, the flames of its wings get smaller. This might cause it to fall from the sky.
Ok, that sounds rough. Anyway, up until this form, the line's been Fire/Flying. As a Solarisen though, replace that Flying Type for Dragon. It also gets two great abilities in Flash Fire and Levitate, but given the types involved, I know what I'd pick. 105 Speed and 120 Special Attack also make for a Grade-A Sweeper, especially since it can learn Nasty Plot. The catch with this line comes in the movepool though. For Level Up, there's Fire, Flying and Dragon moves, with Agility, alongside a miniscule number of Normal moves. When TMs are involved however, a rare thing for Vega is apparent here. Thus far, a lot of the Pokemon I've highlighted have insane coverage in their movesets through TMs. Solarisen learns a whole 13 TM Moves, with only two of those moves being extra coverage. Tutor and Egg Moves are better, but there's still nothing that really stands out aside from Bug. Anyway, its original name was Phenusc, which is literally just a mispelling of its Japanese name, Phoenix. We're back in Gen 1 with a name like that.
Right, since I'm going to be travelling a lot until the weekend, I'm going to wait until then to do the next highlight. Gotta use the trains this week to go do some training for my job. So yeah, I'll combine the highlights for any updates that come out this week into a big one on Saturday. See you then!

#21: Never Prosper - vs. Cyborg Mewtwo
O...kay. So we have an enormous tower with a Gym sign next to it, a swarm of D.H refugees crowded nearby, and no obvious explanation. It's clear why you're the leader of this group. Sensei, be careful. Something strange is inside. Define 'strange'. I...I cannot. It is unlike anything I have ever felt before. Be wary. Okay, you're both seriously starting to freak me out. Will we be all right, Sensei? Of course we will! We're powerful warriors! Nothing can stop us! We should walk right in and demand surrender!
Yeah, no. But we're- Possibly overleveled for the gym, yes. I have no idea what to expect. Then what are we doing out here? Out here, the Vs. Seeker can hit up four potential opponents at once. Then it's training. Damn right it is. This is Vega's last chance to do stupid gym tricks. I'm expecting something really nasty.
(Eventually...)
Sensei...even I think this might be a bit much! I'd like to get home before I die of old age. He has his reasons. Six of them. Us? No. Well, yes, but that's not what I meant. What, then? Tso...Reiko, Tadao, Ryota, Akio...and Rex. I only recognize some of those names. Oh...our fallen friends... Nobody else is going to die here. Not if it's within my power to stop it, and so help me, it is. Now let's get back there and end this.
3DS? Some kind of code, perhaps? Anything you recognize, Hisao? You're joking, right? No, then. If it was something I recognized, I wouldn't betray the organization to tell you. It would be a death sentence. W...nevermind. But you are on our side. For the moment, yes. Comforting.
Move. Nani? You. Move. Go. ... Iwao, if she doesn't move by the count of three, pick her up and toss her out of the way. EEEE! Aaaaand there she goes.
Okay, team. Supplies are refreshed, everyone is healed, but we have no idea what to expect in there. Brace yourselves.
... ... ... Wow! Oh. Oh my. What now, fearless leader?
(I hate you, Vega.)
So there's a hidden item here. We should investigate. Sure, but I have no idea how to get over there. I do. Come back down this way. Okay, now whaaaaaAAAAUGH! Now we try them all, starting with that one...nope, it wasn't that one. That was unnecessary. But rewarding.
A random pikachu? Here? Take care. ...hmmm. The gyms around here do seem to take small details into account. I'm betting it'll be important later.
Okay...found the item. What is it, Sensei? I have no idea. What is it, Sensei? I have no idea. I think I hear the pikachu vocalizing. Shall we investigate? I think we shall!
So it could've done this the whole time. Why should it? Are we ready? That's a fair question. Are we? We're as ready as we're likely to get. Whatever is in there, we can take it on.
Merciful Arceus... What is it?! It's an old opponent...say hello to...what's left of Mewtwo. What is it wearing? Look at it. See how the metal is fused with the flesh? I'm going to be sick! Back in Kanto, we thrashed Mewtwo good and hard. I think...I think Darkrai put it back together again. It's so quiet... I do not think that it can speak. Even its mental voice is silent. I am creeped right the fuck out right now, I don't mind saying it. Let's just get this over with. R-right. Terry, you're up.
Right! New plan. Hisao? Of course. No complaints? I'm brave, not stupid!
AAAGH! What the fuck?! I'm confused, I admit. Okay. It's okay. I've heard of Pikachu that can use Surf before, I guess this is the same thing. Hisao, bulldoze that little bastard!
Good job. Now get back, we're going to get you some healing. Are you sure you want someone taking that hit? We'll be all right. This gym isn't as high-level as I expected. Let me try again! Sure, Terry. Get out there! Fight well, Terry. Always!
Figures. It's all right, Sensei! I can handle it! Terry, are you sure? It's part-poison, so it'll take normal damage and you can't Toxic it. I love fighting strong opponents! Let me fight! Do you have a better option? Yuki would be super-effective, but she'd have to take a hit on the way in...let's play it safe. Terry, do your thing!
Wow. You only needed one Hyper Potion! When will it be my turn, Sensei? When the time is right. Brrr...just look at it. Hmm? Passionless, devoid of will. Not even feral, just...nobody home. It may simply be focused. You should do the same. Right, right. All right, let's switch things up so that Yuki won't have to take a hit to switch in. Go for it!
Aw, c'mon! Hardly seems fair. It is almost as if it knew what you were going to do. If so, we may be in danger. Well, I know Yuki is in danger here and now. Terry, I hate to keep asking- And I love to keep fighting! Let's go!
OKAY, WAIT A DAMN MINUTE. TIME OUT. Do not lose your composure. No, Hideo. I happen to have trained a Charizard up from a Charmander, and I happen to know for a fact that it can't learn Thunderbolt anywhere along the line! It sure...felt like...Thunderbolt... Sensei, I hate to argue, but... No, I get it. That was definitely Thunderbolt. And that was definitely the Charizard that used it. But that's impossible! Come on, Darkrai! Are you even trying to keep up internal consistency anymore?! I have an idea. What? Quit whining and finish the fight. ...fine.
Okay, team. I think it's a pretty safe guess that one of those two is a Blastoise. At this point, we literally have no idea what these things are capable of, so I'm pulling out all the stops. Then you have need of my help yet again. That I do. You're best able to endure whatever random crap your opponent pulls out. I will serve you well. I don't doubt it.
Okay! Here's our opportunity. Hisao, I need you to absorb whatever hits you can while I heal Terry up. I see. I will do as you ask. All right, here, Terry. Drink this. Ahhh. Much better. We may have a problem. What kind of problem?
Nnnnf...that kind. It's all right. Earthquake only has 10 PP, and even a crit won't kill you. We're going to exhaust it. Sensei, are you sure? I'm sure. I'm watching closely. Even with damage differentiation, a crit can't kill. We're going to bide our time and strike when the moment is right. Better you than me. Agreed. You would not survive. That's not what I meant! Iwao, I need to focus. Okay, here we go...I've got you, Hisao. Just take it easy. Sensei, it's beginning to glow! What? That seems...
How the fuck do you teach Explosion to a Scyther?!
If that had critted... It did not. It could have. I need to get out of the mindset that I can just stall. Can we discuss this topic later? Absolutely. And now that I know what its last pokemon is, Terry, I want you in there. So I'm just along for the ride, huh? Moral support. You're...what? Heh, gotcha. Okay, let's end this!
Bingo! Called it. In order to defeat any Grass types. Exactly. Terry, on the other hand, appears to resist just about everything this thing does. I wanted a challenge! Charizard. I'll be good. All right. I'm betting you have more Toxic than he has Full Heals, so let's get the ball rolling!
I thought you weren't going to stall anymore! This isn't stalling, Nobuo. I'm not just going to have Terry poison it. This is just the beginning. What now, then? Are you going to brush Surf up against it? Nope! See, Blastoise is a pure Water type. It'll resist Surf, sure. Ah, I see. Exactly, Yuki. It may resist water, but it won't resist poison. Terry, hit that thing with a Sludge Bomb!
We did it! Sensei, we did it! Phew... This is a greater victory than you realize. Hmmm? Your opponent cheated. With both paws! You still won. Damn right we did. Even when Darkrai breaks the rules, I still won't lose. Next stop, the Elite Four! But first, we put this thing out of its...
...misery? Without awareness, one cannot suffer. Sensei, what was it? I can answer that. By all means. Mewtwo was one of Darkrai's cohorts. That connection must have enabled its reconstruction into that cyborg thing. I don't understand. And I don't care. We're not making any progress standing around here, let's leave. Wait. It dropped something.
Not in a million years. *smash!* Sensei, look!
Odd. I've never seen the like in a gym. Where do you suppose it goes? Don't care. If the Elite Four isn't up there, I'm not interested. I'm not so sure that's a wise philosophy, Iwao. Oh? And why not? Whatever is up there was being guarded by Mewtwo. We don't want enemies at our backs as we leave. Sound logic. Then let's explore! Sounds good to me! Let's just get you healed, and...
Something about this place doesn't sit right with me. So, what else is new?

I had seen a walkthrough-style run of Vega prior to first reading this run, and yet I was still both dumbfounded and bemused by the level of BS in this specific fight.
For the uninitiated with Vega, those opponents had custom stat blocks, as well as ridiculously BS move coverage.

Keeping in mind that I was going in blind, I strongly suspect that the only reason I didn't lose any 'mon was that I went in unintentionally overleveled.
And if that Explosion had been a crit, it still would've killed Hisao.

Yeah, this specific fight is why I'm never playing Vega. Even though the translation makes it a lot easier to know how to proceed, that doesn't help when the game fucking blatantly cheats in order to beat you.

There seem to be a lot of good reasons to not play Vega. I remember the "debate" over the merits of Vega back when this run first came out. However, that Gym Battle is one of the better reasons to not play Vega.

Update #22: Communique
(After walking a surprisingly short distance through Unknown Dungeon...)
Wait a minute. What's going on over there? Sensei, that's the legendary we saw in the town in the south! I got that, but what's it doing here? More importantly, why are those D.H people bothering it? More importantly still, why are there still D.H people? ...OU HEA... ...did anyone else hear that? Hear what? Hmmm. Maybe nothing. We could wait and watch. We could, but they might do something to it. C'mon, let's go introduce ourselves.
We are Manic and the pokemon and we are here to kick your ass! One two three four! I don't understand. Sorry, reference to a Hoenn favorite, Scott Versus The World. I'll have to show you sometime. Moichido anata! < You again! > Yeah, see, I was sort of wandering by after we beat your creepy Mewtwo resurrection thing, and I couldn't help but noticed you'd somehow fenced in an innocent pokemon. ...nani? *shrug* I've beaten you before. I can do it again. Leave now, or else. Watashi wa mae ni anata o nagura remashita. Watashi wa futatabi sore o okonau koto ga dekimasu. Ima no mama, matawa hoka. Sensei, are you sure we can do this? There are four of them and only one of you. Maybe, maybe not, but I'll be damned if I don't try. We can't just leave this thing here to suffer.
Carmen! Kyle! C: Watashi wa anata ga subete no eiko o toru koto ga dekinakatta. < I couldn't let you take all the glory. > K: Watashitachiha, anata no soba de tatakau tame ni koko ni iru! < We're here to fight by your side! > I'm assuming from the expressions that you're here to fight. How about now, Yuki? Three versus four. Much more suitable odds. Let's finish this. Wait a minute. Do you feel that? Feel what? I'm not sure...
HAX! I call hax! We just defeated- ...CALM... Sensei, it's too powerful - we can't hope to defeat it! We will not have to. Look at Manic's grin. Terry, would you do the honors of translating for me? Of course. Attention, D.H losers. Chui, D. H no haisha. You may recognize Mewtwo. Anata wa myuutsu o ninshiki shite mo yoi. Hai! This one is on our side. Kochira wa, wareware no soba ni aru.
Yeah, you'd better run. MANIC. I don't understand how you're doing this, but I'm glad you are. Is everyone all right? Who is this, Sensei? You remember the story I told you? This is apparently Cresselia, speaking through Mewtwo. I thought she couldn't reach you here. So did I, to be honest. Let's talk, Cresselia. SHORTLY. YOU HAVE ONE MORE TASK TO ACCOMPLISH IN THIS CAVE. I do? TURNER HAS RETREATED, BUT HE IS CORNERED. END HIS THREAT. Turner...ah, the big boss. Gotcha. Be right back.
All right, you insufferable prick. I have had it up to here with your ridiculous team of fashion mistakes making my time here more difficult. I've beaten your lackey so many times I think he's starting to like it, and the last time we met, my team pummeled the hell out of yours like they thought candy was going to fall out. Once we're done here, you're going to jail, and you can find out what they do to guys who look like you. ... ... Nan da? *sigh* Yeah. Let's just fight.
(Three guesses how this turned out!)
(Yeah, pretty much exactly like that.)
Shut the fuck up, sit the fuck down, and hold still. If you try to escape, I'll have Hisao break your legs. Shall I do it now? Nah. Let's give him a chance to follow common sense. Sensei... It is all right. He is merely venting his temper on a suitable target. It is healthy. I'm standing right here, you know. Yes, you are. ...wow. I walked face-first into that one. Okay, let's get back to where we left off.
Cresselia. I have a lot of questions. EVERYONE IS FINE. I AM MAINTAINING THIS SPACE WITH MY OWN POWER. Thank you. That does answer one of them. So...he's not insane? No one said that.
When I get back, I'm going to have quite the story... THERE WILL BE NO NEED. WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING, ALL OF US. Seriously? For how long? SINCE THE BEGINNING. (WE FAST-FORWARDED PAST THE GREETER JOB.) Oh, man. Nero and the Sinnoh team... YES. IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR US ALL. YOU AND YOUR TEAM HAVE SUFFERED GREATLY. So...what now? FINISH WHAT YOU HAVE STARTED. DEFEAT THE ELITE FOUR AND CHAMPION. ONLY THEN WILL HE PRESENT HIMSELF. But if you have a champion here, in that body, why do you need me? I DO HAVE A CHAMPION. YOU ARE HE. Me? Look, I don't know what you think I am... YOU ARE THE CANDLE-BEARER. YOU ALWAYS HAVE BEEN, EVEN BEFORE DARKRAI FIRST TOOK AN INTEREST IN YOU. The what? What does that even mean? YOU WILL UNDERSTAND IN TIME. FOR NOW, KNOW THAT THIS BODY CANNOT LEAVE THIS CAVE. Which necessitates me going and doing all the legwork. Great. Look, can you offer me any advice? Hints? Knowledge of what to expect? If you've been watching, then you know that this place is ridiculously unfair. MANIC. BE STRONG. THIS IS YOUR FINAL TEST. So, no, then. YOU DO NOT NEED MY HELP. YOU ARE THE CANDLE-BEARER. YOU WILL SUCCEED BECAUSE IT IS WHO YOU ARE. Can't you offer any help at all? Some rare candies, maybe? Even an assortment of X-items would be useful!
... ... ...nothing... I am sorry. Then that was... The Lady of Dreams, yes. Do not be afraid, Sensei. Right! We'll fight by your side until the end! This definitely calls for a report. Thanks. All of you. It's just getting...I don't know. The weight upon your shoulders is unenviable. We will help you bear it. Isn't that right, Iwao? ...hmph. Fine. I'll help. For now.
What do you think she meant by 'candle-bearer'? You do seem to like Fire pokemon. Sure, but that doesn't seem right. Perhaps she meant that you are her servant, as candle-bearers once were? What?! Sensei is no one's servant! Are you sure about that, Terry? Sensei? I've done everything she's asked me to do, and I'm about to continue to do so. I'm not so sure...but I know that I can only keep going forward. Anybody remember where we're going? The League. Correct. And that means:
This town makes me think of Ryota. Me too. He told me to keep everyone safe, but I couldn't do it... Terry, no. None of that. It's true, though! Rex and Akio still died, and there was nothing... Correct. There was nothing you could do. Listen to your Sensei. All right... I know it's hard, but we have to look past blame. No one anticipated what happened. No one could have. I couldn't do anything. Neither could you, nor Hideo, nor anyone else. Their loss is agony, but we have to use it as a source of strength. How can you be so cavalier about your friends' deaths? Shameful. Finally, someone agrees with me! Not him. You. W-what?! Are you so blind? Can you not see how his shoulders sag under the weight he carries? The pain he does not allow himself to feel, so that he can honor their deaths? Take a moment to look past your selfish anger and become worthy of your place on this team. ...both of you, stop it. We don't have time for this right now. We're about to challenge the league. Quarrel later.
Sensei? Nobuo. Are we...truly on our way to kill a god? It does seem that way, doesn't it? Is it right to do so? What do you think? I am not sure. I am not even sure it is possible. We are currently following a trainer from another world who has been split into fragments and reassembled in order to defeat a deity - scarcely the first he has challenged - who created the world in which we live and, ostensibly, all of us. Meaning...? My student, I have come to accept that nothing is impossible.
...fuck.
Ren, I know you've already been repaid, but I need you one more time. Of course! Just lead the way! Fine. I'll stay behind this time. Come get me when we arrive. I will, don't worry. Why does everyone seem so solemn? Heh, sorry about that. Things have gotten kind of complicated. We'll be fine. Whatever it is, I'm happy to help however I can! Let's go!
Thanks, Ren. You're like a furry toolbox. Oh, uhm, thank you? All right, team. Let's get in there and see about getting to the other side. Just nudge past this trainer...
... ... Gorichuu! I have heard of these. Tsk. ... ... Sensei? I think something's wrong with Manic. Er. Sensei? What should I- KILL IT UNTIL IT IS DEAD. Aheh! I'll just handle this, then...
Oh boy. Victory Road. It's more glorious than I had dreamed! Maybe I should just... Don't worry, Ren. I won't have you fight here. Okay, team, listen up. I've dealt with Victory Roads in the past, and they all have three things in common: they're long as hell, stuffed to the brim with trainers (okay, usually), and they're packed with powerful items. What are your instructions? We're going to make a preliminary pass-through to clear out as many trainers as we can and get any items that are conveniently placed. Then we're going to go back and heal, and do another pass-through to clear out the remainder and find anything that's cleverly hidden. Solid strategy thus far. Finally, we're going to go back and heal again, then make our final run through with the intent of clearing it. The League should be just on the other side. Everyone clear on what we're doing? Yes! Certainly. Confirmed. I will lend what help I can. And I'll help Sensei! All right. Let's get in there!
(And so, after a bunch of running around and picking up good items and TMs and such...)
Kyle! Good to see you again. Thanks for the backup in the cave. Watashi no yujin! Anata wa, kongo no kadai no tame ni junbi ga dekite imasu ka? < My friend! Are you ready for the challenges ahead? > Here, let me shake your hand. Hai! Okay! I'd better keep moving. It was good seeing you again! ... No, really, I've gotta go. ... Seriously, I have to get oh dammit you want to fight don't you.
All right, team. Make this brief. We don't want to get wounded down here in the depths of Victory Road! (So, they made it brief!)
And now you're down in the bottom of Victory Road with all of your pokemon knocked out, one fight from whiting out. Kore wa hidoi aideada! < This was a terrible idea! > All right, all right. Take it easy. Sheesh, you're as bad as Spaz sometimes. Leave him here? Coup de grace? What? No! He comes with us. A quick dose of Repel, and...
Buddy, if you even think about starting a fight with me right after I step out of Victory Road, I will shove your feet into your mouth and roll you down the mountain like a katamari. ... Good call.
Carmen. Look, I'm grateful for your help back in the cave and all... Brace yourselves. Carmen, no. I'm really not up for this right now, okay? Anata wa junbi ga dekite inai baai, karera wa anata o hakai suru. < If you are not ready, they will destroy you. > She wants to make sure we're ready. Just like Kyle! I don't think we've got much choice, team. Let's show her that we're prepared for what lies ahead!
(All this time, and I STILL can't say for sure if that's male or female.)
We have the will to fight! We've been taught by the best! I have a job to do. We will not fall.
Yuki, let's end this. Hit it with a Signal Beam! How did it manage to survive? Anger Burn. Ang...shit! Yuki, get out of the way! YUKIIIII!
Hnnnnh...! I can't survive another hit like that! It's all right, you don't have to. Just hit it with Signal Beam until she runs out of healing. That strategy will not work. Why not? You clearly hit it for most of its health. A crit would end it immediately, and you're faster than it is. You are missing a key detail. Such as?
Damn it! It's the fight against Moltres all over again. No. Then, you did not heal because you forgot. Right, and now I haven't healed- Because you have not been given the chance. Because Kyle needed you.
Enough of this. I never cease to be amazed by what you can do, Hideo. I am only an old man. You're my Sensei! All right. Let's see what Carmen has to say for herself.
Anata ga junbi ga dekite iru. Kuru. < You are ready. Come. >
And here it is. I have no idea what passes for a League around here, but the influence is obvious. What do you mean? This building is similar to the League buildings on the other worlds. Same aesthetic. What does it mean? It means that Darkrai is running out of ideas. And time. Sensei? We're going in there to get Iwao, and we're going to train some more. Then we're going after the Elite Four and Champion, and then? We end this.

Update #23: Momentum
All right. We're finally here. Sorry for the wait, Iwao. Don't worry about it. I got to talk with some of the others. Does this mean you won't need me anymore? Afraid so, Ren. Oh, no! It's all right. I don't think all the combat is my style anyway. Say hello to the others for me, okay? Of course! Now, let's see if we can pick up some supplies for the times to come...
Well, that's a damn shame. So many supplies, though! Sure, but no Full Re...er, no Omni Medicines. Those things are really useful and can save an entire round of combat. Looks like it's down to the two we've found. We will need to conserve them. So we're ready now, right? Yyyyyeah, no. All of you are level 80 or very close to it, and we're about to have to face the Elite Four. Explain, please. Ah, right! None of you have done this before. We're going to have to face each of the Elite Four one after the other; once we start, we can't stop. Each one will specialize in a different element. We're then going to have to face the champion. With no healing in between? Nothing but what we bring with us. This is the truest test of a trainer, so before we go in there...
...we're going to go do a little grinding.
(Some time later...)
Okay, screw this noise. You're surprised by the wild pokemon? I'm surprised by how plentiful they are, and how the Repels aren't enough. Then recommend a new plan of attack. How about the trainers outside? The trainers...
Look, Sensei! Three at once! Bingo! Gotcha! Heh heh. All right, team. We're going to train here for a little while. Not for long, though. We can't lose this momentum! Take care not to gather too much momentum. Don't worry, Hideo. I've already got a battle plan.
(In due time...)
And there it is. Does this really seem like a good idea to you? 85 should be plenty. Especially given that, after this point, the speed of leveling drops like a stone. So that's it, then? We train up a few levels and we're ready? Pfffft. Hell no. That was just the first step! I stand ready for your further commands.
The Elite Four are always a challenge no matter where you go. And you expect these to be even moreso. Exactly. So it's well past time we pop open the TM case and see what we can do about your move pools. Some of you are pretty well-off - in fact, Yuki, I think you're already just about right - but a few of you...well. Let's see what we can dig up. I'm ready to learn! I bet you are, Nobuo. Well, here, try this on for size.
A...psychic attack? Exactly. But I won't get a bonus from this at all! Bonus, schmonus. And you can quote me on that. What you're getting is coverage, especially against Fighting types. Ohhhh. I see! Harness the power of your mind, my student, and no one can stand against you. Ah, Hideo. Here, I have something for you too:
Ooooh, nice! Hmmm. Interesting. I will use it gladly. It's way past time we upgraded from Water Gun, and the paralysis chance just might be the edge you need sometime. So since you only mentioned Yuki before, I'm guessing we're all getting something out of this. Even me? Definitely you, Iwao. You wield flattery like a Voltorb playing the piano. Let's get you something a little more suitable to your talents.
Not bad, not bad. Power bonus, and it's the right type of attack. You know this hurts me too, though, right? I do. We'll be using it surgically, with an eye toward the damage you take. You're starting to make me think we might survive this. If I have my way, every single one of you will make it through unharmed. And how often do you have it your way? ...right. Now then, Hisao, I have something for you as well:
A physical Fire attack. Hmmm. The single most powerful physical TM I can give you. You'll need to be careful with it, but if anyone can keep a cool head, it's you. Keep a cool head while using your fire? Don't be flippant. This is serious. I know. I promise you that. Terry, you're the last, and you get something special:
He gets a Psychic move too? I want redundancy here. We've seen gyms for Bug, Flying, Ghost, Grass, Ground, Psychic, Normal, and Water. So...? That leaves Dark, Dragon, Electric, Fighting, Fire, Ice, Poison, Rock, and Steel. I see. We've got enough Fighting to have Dark, Ice, Rock, and Steel more than covered. Yuki's fast and strong enough to take down dragons, Iwao and Hisao can stop Electric and Poison cold, and Terry can swamp anything Fire or Rock. Fighting. Precisely. With no flyers, we have to go Psychic against them, and I fully expect one of them to be a Fighter.
All right, team. Let's get one last good look at you.
Terry. You've got good balanced stats, and a pretty respectable Special Attack along with HP forever. I'm going to be relying on you when things get tough out there. These are the best opponents, right, Sensei? The toughest there are? You'd better believe it. I can't wait!
Yuki. It's kind of funny; your stats are very similar to Terry's, except that you've swapped HP and speed. You're far-and-away my fastest fighter, and while your elemental weaknesses do worry me a bit, I'm going to be using you as a lead-off so that you don't have to try to tank a hit to switch in. Sensei, I must admit, you are a very different person from when we first met. I should hope so! I am serious. When we met, you were bewildered, confused, even frightened. Now, I feel that I can put my fate in your hands. Thanks, Yuki. I won't let you down.
Hideo. I've said it before, but I'm saying it again: your special attack strength is amazing. I worry about your defense and HP, and you only have two elements, but you do quite a lot with them. I'll be looking to you for single devastating blows, along with some guidance. If this is to be my final battle, I will give all that I have. No, Hideo. It's my goal for this not to be your final battle. I'm not going to lose anyone else. Keep your mind clear, and you may accomplish this. I will, I promise.
Hisao. Your speed is worthless, but that's not why you're here. Your defense is admirable by any account, and you hit like a ton of bricks. You're going to be my default, because you can almost certainly absorb anything these guys will throw at you. I will continue to do as you command. I do wonder, though: when all of this is over, how will I pay whoever-it-is? You will remit payment to me, and I will give it to them. Good enough for me. I am glad, as there is no alternative.
Iwao- I've got Special Attack for days, and you'll be using me to deal individual massive hits, swapping me out if I hurt myself too badly. I'm a walking scalpel for your problems. Rrrrrright. So, after this- After this, you're going to take me back to the route where you found me and release me so that I can try to find my Hanami and explain to her why I vanished on the day we were to be married. ...oh... Yeah. Also, why I'm now a Nidoking. Would you accept another Moon Stone as a wedding gift? I guess.
Nobuo. You're the only one I really got to EV train the way I wanted to, and WOW does it show! You're going to rampage all over that battlefield, laying out our enemies left and right. I plan to make good use of that Thrash attack. But...I've been considering getting rid of it. That's hardly the measured style that Sensei's been trying to teach me! Ah, Nobuo. Do you not see? To be yourself is to follow the path of right action. Do not try to fight like me; try to fight like you. I...I'll try, Sensei! Don't worry, Nobuo. You're in good hands.
Hisao, I want you in front. Naturally. If we come up against something you can't handle, I'll swap you out, but I don't know how many things there are that you couldn't handle. Keep in mind: in the event of my death, my fee doubles. Morbid... Honest. My organization does not enter into deals with the unwitting. Well, it's my goal for no one to die. To that end...
Hisao, some Soft Sand to boost that Bulldoze. Yuki, some Brightpowder- Blind Dust. -right. Blind Dust to make you harder to hit. Hideo, a Black Belt to ramp up those Fighting moves. Terry, a TwistedSpoon- Twisted? -okay, a Bent Spoon to help with the only attack that needs it. Iwao, some Leftovers to help with that Raze Earth attack. Thanks, I think. Finally, I figured out what this thing is: it's a Choice Band, no matter what anyone says. Nobuo, this thing will make you commit to a particular attack, but it'll boost your attack by half in exchange. So, let's see...Thrash, with bonus... And a 400+ attack stat. Yeah, I'm thinking along the same lines. Okay, team. It's time to do this!
Hello. My name is Manic. You are in my way.

I presume that, re. Iwao's marriage complication, we plan to ignore the eccentricity of the egg-producing capabilities of the Nidoran family?

I presume that, re. Iwao's marriage complication, we plan to ignore the eccentricity of the egg-producing capabilities of the Nidoran family? Does a marriage have to mean children? They could just be wanting to spend their lives together.

Pretty much that, yeah. Love transcends all boundaries, including but not limited to fertility.

Update #24: Brawl - vs. Surge-sama and Your Mom
Seriously, I have no idea what you're saying. Want me to translate? Honestly? Not really. I mean, seriously, take a good look at this guy.
I guess he does look kind of silly... What? No, no. I mean, really look at him. Hmm, then you noticed as well. Good. Noticed...his hair? I don't understand. That's a man who knows exactly why we're here and exactly what's expected of him. We don't need to understand each others' words, we understand each other just fine without them. Hai. All right then. Let's do this.
It's hardly even fair. I could switch out. Nah. This is battle, we take our advantages where we find them. One good Bulldoze should lay it out. All right, here I-
GLLBLBLLLBLBLLL!! The fuck?! But...but it's... No. Uh-uh. Not letting this faze me! Hisao, you still alive? Annoyed, but alive. Good! Your turn.
Arceus, that thing hit like a ton of bricks...swap out. This guy is either Steel or Electric, and either way, Iwao has the answer. Fantastic.
Hmmm. I haven't seen this thing before. Sure you have, Sensei! Remember? Sure, but it never got to do anything. I have no idea how it fights! Troublesome. It could be Steel, Electric, or even both. Let me tell you what it is.
It's dead. It was in my way, and now it's dead. Um...Iwao? Shut up. Everything that gets between me and victory is standing between me and my mate. The cat-thing? Dead.
This guy? Dead. Iwao. Shut the fuck up. Don't you tell me- You're hurt, moron. Half health. You want to go back to her in a bodybag? You're...I... I'm getting you back safely, and that sort of requires that you not die. Now step down. Nobuo, do your thing. Fffffffine.
I think I've seen one of these before! Hey, yeah...isn't this the evolved form of that electric pokemon we caught? It fights so poorly! Surprisingly so. Here, hang tight for a moment, Nobuo.
Ahh. Much better. Ewww. Weak or no, enough Nasty Plots can turn anything into a monster. I understand. I have to focus, summon my chi... Remember your lesson. Do not fight like me. Fight like you. But you never told me what that means! Kick its ass like there's a prize inside!
*pant, pant, pant* Mother of Mew...remind me not to piss you off! Did I...get them? This guy's going to need a spatula to recollect his pokemon! Most impressive. You have done well. Good job! Oh, uh, heh-heh...thanks...
Right. *bow* *bow* Impressive work, everyone. Sorry about that Hydro Pump, Hisao. All is well. No one could have seen it coming. Now, let's see who's hurt.
HEAL ME. Oh, take some Lemonade and hush, you big baby. What do you think is next, Sensei? Well, I doubt they'd put something up front with the same weakness as the last, so maybe this will be Fighting, or perhaps Dark? Let's go find out.
Yeah, no.
...huh. Well, we've covered Ground, so...poison? Really? You may be outsmarting yourself. Come again? You are assigning your thoughtfulness to them. Hmmm. So you're saying that just because I wouldn't put two leaders in a row with the same weakness, that doesn't mean they thought of that? Indeed. Excuse me, coming through!
Next...ow... Iwao, fall back! You're at less than half your health this time. Yeah, but she's gone. Iwao... Save it. Keep your eyes on the front. Terry, you'll resist poison. I want you up there. A chance for a real battle! At last!
It's like fighting a mirror! A lower-leveled mirror, but yeah. What will you do? They're the same types, this battle could take ages! Heh heh. You're right, it could, except that Terry has a trick up his metaphorical sleeve. Raze Earth! Uh oh. Nnnngh...so does he, Sensei! That's a nice trick it's got. Show it yours, Terry!
Your trick was better than his, I think. Can I stay in? I don't think so. You took a nasty hit from that thing. Yuki, would you care to give it a try? You're faster than almost anything he could bring out. Of course, Sensei.
Bingo! Is that what I look like? No, no! Of course not. Phew. You're much uglier. Yuki, ice that thing! Hey! Heh heh...Anger Burn!
FUCK! Why does everything Yuki sees know that move?! S-sensei... It's okay, Yuki. Bad luck. I'm sure Terry can- Just watch.
Whew! One-shotted! Now, I will...return. Let me help you off the field! Thank you, Terry. I will accept your help. Okay, no more of this shit. Hisao, you're healthy, I need you front and center while I heal the others. As you wish.
Uh oh. Gengars are trouble, Hisao. Be on your guard. You might as well remind me to breathe. Understood. Just weather his assaults, let me know if things get too bad. Meanwhile, everyone else gather 'round.
Thank you, I needed that. About time. I'm ready to get back into the fight! Hisao? How're you holding up? Pass me one of those. Sure thing, here you go.
I'm fine, thanks for asking. Any real trouble? None. Its moves bounce off of my armor and barely leave a dent. Well, that's good. Yes, except that I can barely hit it. It's a stalemate; we'd drain ourselves of PP trying for a kill. Not a good long-term strategy. Here, let's make that healing pay off. Take a break, Hisao. Terry, go do what you love!
Never have I seen someone take such unbridled joy in combat - not maliciously, but innocently. It's kind of comforting, in a way. Okay, now let's-
WHAT. I don't...what happened? It has a fucking Focus Band. Sensei... Focus Bands. That pisses me off. What's his problem? Rex...he died because a pokemon hung on with a Focus Band, and counter-attacked... No more more fucking around. Terry, Psychic that thing until it pops like a zit!
Calm yourself immediately. I'm fine! I'm calm. Sorry. Don't know what that was. You know exactly what that was. Yeah...yeah, I guess I do. Sensei, are you all right? I'm fine. Yuki, would you step in and finish this? Of course.
Wait. That thing is Poison? No, it's not! Maybe it's Ghost/Poison? I suppose it's possible. Sensei, it's not Poison! I can tell! Huh. I never knew you could do that. It never came up before. Well, either way, I know one thing it is. Yuki, Shadow Ball that thing, would you?
It's all right, Yuki. It's pretty badly hurt. I failed you again, Sensei. I am sorry. Nonsense! Just hit it again and we're done here. And if I miss? You won't. But it just boosted its evasion! You can't say for sure. Yuki. Look at it. Focus. You won't miss. Just keep your eyes on it, draw back, aim...
...and follow through. I did it! Never doubted it for a moment. You're a poor liar. Iwao. But she did make a nice shot. Good work. That's better.
It's interesting. Sensei? The last guy, and now this woman. Do they seem angry at all, or even hostile? Now that you mention it, no! These people are not part of what you are going through, Manic. They are merely doing what their paths dictate. You know, I have to admit, it's refreshing to fight an Elite Four (and hopefully champion) that isn't composed of shiftless assholes. Good for you. What's next? Dragon? Fighting? Ice, maybe? No way they'd make three leaders in a row weak to Ground. You said that last time.

Update #25: Power Through - vs. Masjine and Camel Joe
You remind me of someone I used to know. Nani? Nevermind. Let's get this underway, shall we?
Hoo boy. Keep your mind focused, Hisao! You're joking. I'm not joking. She'll use those looks against you! Business before pleasure. You should know that as well as anyone. Hey, you can't blame me for being worried. I can and I am. Would anyone else care to handle this for me?
Do not be too offended. We have everything to lose, caution is understandable. Hmph. I suppose. I never thought you'd back down from a fight. Here, let me have the next one.
Oh, cool. A Lucario! You like Lucario, huh? Of course I do. Great stats, complimentary typing, what's not to like? Watch closely.
HAH! One Heat Wave and it's toast. Very nice! You didn't even have to hurt yourself. Why would I have to hurt myself? It's Fighting/Steel, I'm Ground/Poison. It might as well have laid down and given up. I had a Lucario once. Taught him Earthquake. Gggh...point taken. All right, who's next? I apologize for my earlier behavior. Allow me to redeem myself. Sure thing. Go for it, Hisao!
Forretress. Your ace in the hole is a kamikaze attack that I will resist. Normally, sure, but don't forget: these guys rarely play by the rules. Don't get cocky and lose your focus! Never. Bug/Steel...just apply a little fire, and...
Simple enough. Hisao, you're still my best tank. Care to stay in for the next one? Certainly.
Wait. This thing is a Steel type? It is. This is one of its two possible evolutions. Wait, that makes it Psychic/Steel...yikes. Hisao, do your thing! Of course. Just give me...a moment...
Ah, dammit. Hisao, wake up! Sensei! The flute! Right! Thanks, Terry. Here, wake up and take this thing down! Hnnh...wha? How embarrassing. Ahem. Now then, back to business. Here I-
GBLLLBLLBLBLBLLLBLL!! Arceus, what is it with you and Big Splash?! At least it's a Physical attack! Hmm. Good point, Nobuo. Well done, my student. You are learning well. Thank you, Sensei! Hit it back, Hisao! With enthusiasm! It's time to...end...this...
FFFFFFffff...fine! Hypnosis it is, then! Flute time!
(And it went back and forth like that for a while. Hypnosis vs. Blue Flute, Big Splash vs. Hyper Potion, until finally...)
All right, this is getting on my last nerve! All it has to do is crit once and Hisao is gone! What shall we do? Terry! Get in there and show that you can lead a horse to water AND make it drink!
Finally! I apologize for my incompetence. I will make amends. It's fine, Hisao. There was nothing you could have done. In my line of work, that is an excuse. Your line of work? You haven't guessed? ...no? *sigh* I am an assassin for hire. I am given a target and told to make it no more. *gasp!* Yakuza... Do not say that name again, or it will be the last thing you say.
Huh? If you're all done prattling, she still has a pokemon left. Nice save! Yeah, yeah. Hold the compliments and let me finish this.
And that's that. Sensei, I am uncomfortable... Understandable. Don't worry, Yuki. I'll keep you safe! Sensei, what are the Yaku- Ahem. ...what are they? A criminal organization. Powerful, loyal, disciplined. Hisao won't turn on us because if he does, he won't get paid. And by this point, I suspect I owe a lot. Your bill thus far comes to 281,800. In a very real way, his loyalty is guaranteed.
Right. It's been a pleasure. Now, if you'll give me a moment...
Ouch. You all took a bit of a beating back there. Not all. Nobuo, they would have resisted your best attack. Trust me, you'll have another chance. Just not now. Let's just get everyone healed. Lemonades all around! Much better. Good, because I want you leading. Seriously? Why?
Fact is, you're not far from leveling. That extra power might be the boost we need. I want you to beat this next guy's pokemon senseless until you feel better. That, I can do. Good. Let's get moving.
Ohhhh hell. Sensei? I knew this place was modeled after Kanto's league. This path always lead to Lance. Champion of your Johto? Yeah, but he was the highest of the Elite Four in Kanto before that. What I'm getting at is, this path leads to someone powerful. Great! Let me fight! Curb your battle-lust for a bit, Terry. We need Iwao to gain that level. Fiiiiiiine...
Eugh. If we hadn't already faced her, I'd say this was the Poison type E4! What is that smell? A bit of tobacco can calm the nerves. Just the same...
Hey, could you put that out while we fight? Seriously, that stuff is noxious.
So, no, then. Let me at him! Whoah. Easy, Iwao! He must also find the man's disrespect offensive! I care nothing for his respect. The sooner he's defeated, the sooner I can extinguish that cigarette! Well, he knows what he wants. Get him, Iwao!
Ffffffuck. Should Sensei take it? No! The last Magmortar I faced knew Thunderbolt. I'm guessing this one does too. Oh... Calm yourself. I'll handle this.
OUCH! It survived?! Simply amazing! Let me fight it! Not a chance. Now it's personal! Give it another Diamond Blast!
And stay down! How're you holding up? Okay, I admit it. The Leftovers were a pretty good idea. Ready for another one, then? Bring it on!
Barely even worth my time. Easy, Iwao. You're not invincible, and those Leftovers can only do so much. You saw how quickly it fell! Yeah, and I know that you've been lucky that Diamond Blast hasn't ruined your special defense. Calm down and stay focused. I'd bet money we haven't seen his strongest pokemon yet.
This is embarrassing!
This is the best the Elite Four has to offer?! Come back, Iwao. But I'm unstoppable! No, you're not. You're getting cocky and arrogant, and that's how pokemon die. But I can still fight! I see, I see. What should I tell Hanami when I go to find her? Should I tell her you died honorably? Hanami...I... Come. Back. Now. Terry, get in there.
I don't understand. Me neither. Fire Blast, on a Water type? You! Are you not taking me seriously?! I'm a great warrior! It just keeps doing it... Rrrrrrgh...! There's only one logical conclusion. Continue. If it continues to use not-very-effective moves, then it must have nothing else. You must be joking! I guess it was bound to happen eventually. Terry, poison it so we can heal up while it dies.
Done! And of course, he has a Full Heal handy. Terry, would you-
Stop wasting my time and stay poisoned! Whoah. I think he's just impatient for a real battle. I suspect one is coming. Terry. calm down. You're no use to me when you're too worked up. S-sorry, Sensei. It's fine. Now, you wanted a real challenge? Wish granted!
Hmmm. Fire bird? Fire dragon? I can't really tell. Sensei, what is it doing? That's not good. That's not good at all!
Gah! I know it's neutral effectiveness, but that still has to hurt! Heh heh... Terry? Finally, a strong opponent! Someone to give me a challenge! I honor you, but I will defeat you! Going to call him back? No need. See, this is Terry. He doesn't fight because he's angry. He fights because he loves it. You know how the saying goes, do something you love for a living...
...and you'll never work a day in your life. We're done. You! Give me that! *squish* Thank you, Iwao. Wish we had a flying type to fan this smoke away...ah well, it'll dissipate over time.
...for now, we have other concerns.

That's right. We went through the entirety of the Elite Four and ALL of them had a weakness to Ground. (Electric, Poison, Steel, Fire)
