Thus begins the first run of the second Manic saga! Brace yourself, it's gonna get weird!
The Rules!
1. Catch only the first wild pokemon from a route. You know how this works. - Dupe clause set to 'no'. May not catch pokemon if it is a dupe. If it is, retry until a new pokemon is found. -- A 'dupe' is any pokemon that I have owned that still lives. - This rule does not apply until I get my first pokeballs. - I may catch any shinies I find, but if they're not the first 'mon on a route, I can't use them. 2. You have a name, right? Everyone else gets one too. 3. If a companion dies, box it. It deserves to be remembered. 4. Gifts, trades, etc. all count as the pokemon for their respective area. 5. PERSISTENT STARTER - You may not remove your starter from your active team. 6. STARTER DEATH - If your starter faints, the run is over. 7. ARMAMENTS - Your pokemon may not use attacks that correspond to an undefeated gym leader's type. -- 7a. Your starter is immune to this rule. -- 7b. HMs are immune to this rule. 8. LOYAL ALLIES - Certain allies may be encountered during your quest. If you find any of them, they must be added to your team at the earliest opportunity and cannot be removed unless killed. 9. DEICIDE - For the run to be complete, all available legendary pokemon must be found and defeated.

Update #0: This page!
Okay, this isn't quite what I was expecting.
First of all, I can remember everything. I'm guessing something got screwed up in the transition.
Second, I feel...weird. Okay, let's do a quick check.
...
...I hear voices. Hearing is a go. That's good!
I don't smell anything, but that might be for the best.
Range of motion...nnf...limited. VERY limited. I don't think I like that.
Sight?
Also a no. Equally disturbing. What the hell is going on?
Hmm.
All right, I can't move much, I can't see, but I can hear, and I'm pretty sure I recognize that voice. Let's see if...
Hey, Prof. ...what? Did you hear something? Hey, good to hear from you. I was just wondering- What the hell?! Why is he awake?! You and you, put him back under NOW!
Whoah, tense. I was just going to ask why... I can't feel my... arms and...legs...

Update #1: Cuppa Joe
Well, that's a relief. At least I can see now. And I can feel my limbs, woo! Much better. Yes, well, you weren't supposed to wake before now. Yeah, I sorta got that idea. Now, back to the matter of your name. You were operating on me and you don't know my name? Of course I do, but I need to make sure you know it. Oh, okay. I guess that's reasonable.
Yes, that'll do nicely. I sure hope so, considering it's my name. Now, "Manic", I still have some calibration to do. Uh, Professor Oak? Doctor Oak. Er, right. So, why are we "talking" with "air quotes"? Never you mind. I need to retrieve some instruments to make the final adjustments, so stay right here. I'll be right back.
Yeah, that's happening. Hmmm, definitely in Kanto, though I don't remember those two in Pallet. Nor do I remember that watery area having a beach this far north. Ah well, whatever. ... ... Man, it sucks not having pokemon to chat with. Let's see what mom's up-
-to. Hi, honey! ...hi...? You should go see Doctor Oak. Am I...am I hallucinating? [Response not found. Initiating snappy comeback subroutine.] I know you are but what am I? I'm going to go with 'seriously creeping me out'. So, uh, bye!
And if you get wrecked just after I fixed you up, I'm going to be so annoyed! There isn't even any grass by the town exit! Calm down. I was just having a look around. Also, I told you to stay put! Lots of professors have told me lots of things. Sometimes I listened, sometimes I didn't. Today, I didn't. Lots of...what are you talking about? Oh, right. Never mind. C'mon, let's get this show on the road.
Mmm-hmm. And you want me and Gary here to each have one. What? Don't interrupt. At any rate, there was a time when I had many pokemon who hadn't yet been affected by the drain. By the what now? What did I just say about interrupting? This guy isn't much for listening, huh? Not bad, not bad. Okay, okay. I'll be good. Sheesh.
All of the others are unsuitable for the task ahead. Wh- mmph. I've been waiting for this for ages, Manic! You have no idea how long I had to wait for you to be ready. Ugh. I can see I'm not getting through this explanation uninterrupted. ... Probably not, Gramps. So how about letting us pick a pokemon, already? Very well. But since Manic quieted down and you didn't, he chooses first. Really?! WOO-H...er, I mean...darn. Well, since explanation time is done...I had a Charmander last time, so I think this time, I might take Sq-
-uir-
-tle?
HA! Nice! Good one, Oak. That's clever. A Hoothoot, even! Is there a problem? Okay, okay, fun's fun, but joke's over. Now, where are the starters? Right in front of you. Nooooo, what's in front of me is a Hoothoot, a Kabuto (nice effort, by the way), and a Mankey. At least he knows his pokemon. Correct. Okay, see, the Kanto starters are Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Manic, no one has seen any of those in years. What an ingrate. If he doesn't want them, I'll take them. Whoah, whoah! Who said anything about not wanting a pokemon? Okay, let's see here...who to choose...
I've never had a Kabuto before. Interesting. Now, please, explain your choice. I thought I just did. I see. And that's the only reason? Well, no. When it evolves, it'll be Rock/Water. That combination is a bit tough to come by. Oh, man. This is too good. Thanks for giving me Easy Mode! Don't gloat. Now, what would you like to call it? Let's find out. What's your name, buddy?
Just call me Cutman. Says his name is...Cutman? You can understand it?! Hey, Gramps! How come I can't understand pokemon? Yeah, that's always sorta been my 'thing'. Fascinating. You seem to have far more experience than I anticipated. Waiting for an answer... I don't have one to give. Manic seems special, in some way. At any rate...
I have a parcel there, something of utmost importance. I need you to retrieve it for me. Oh, yeah. The custom pokeball, right? No, a custom p- how did you know that?! This is getting weird fast. Look, it'd take way too long to explain. Let's just say that I've done this before and move on, okay? Wait, don't leave yet. I need to examine you and find out what's causing this. I'm flattered, but you're not my type. C'mon, Cutman. Let's go get Oak's pokeball. What the hell have I gotten myself into?
And cue the inevitable Gary battle. Why do you keep calling me that? Better question: where's that whistling coming from? Freaky. Theme music, don't question it. Now, why do you keep calling me Gary? What, is it 'Blue' now? Never understood why anyone would...ah, skip it. C'mon, let's do this.
I think I'll be all right. Easy Mode, remember? I don't need Easy Mode to win. Not for you. Did you know that Mankey knows Low Kick at this level? Ohhhh hell. It's cool, it's cool. I've had worse. No, you haven't. I don't know why you think you have all this experience, but you don't. Now, let's get this over with.
I couldn't agree more. WHAT?! I...I won? You certainly did. Well done! I think I feel new information coming in! Oh yeah? What kinda new information?
I picked...the wrong...pokemon! No, I picked the right one. Oh, Manic. You have no idea how valuable that Kabuto just became! Are you high? He just learned a Rock move AND a Grass move. He's going to plow through Brock's gym! Uh, about that. You didn't tell him. There was no time! Look, this isn't hard. Brock has a Geodude and an Onix. Neither one knows a Ground type move, both are double-weak to Grass. I'm no genius, but this looks to be signed, sealed, delivered.
Wait, where are you going? Fixing things is up to me, per usual. Your new golden boy there doesn't know a thing. If he goes out into the world right now, it'll eat him for lunch, Kabuto or no Kabuto. I did okay against you. We did okay. Right, sorry. WE did okay. You got lucky. One time. I don't know what Gramps was thinking, but you've got a long way to go before you're ready to take one step outside of Pallet. I'm out, Gramps. Don't wait up. Oak. Manic. You know I can't just sit around while not-Gary does all the work. Of course not. That's not what you're for. Go, with my blessings. What could possibly g- NOPE.
ALSO NOPE. Can we at least rest? Okay, fine. The Psyduck seems harmless, and the boxes...well, I don't even know. You have a weird family. This is not my family, trust me. Now, c'mon, let's get rested and get outta here.
It's nice to know that some things never change. You knew that guy was gonna give you a potion. Yyyyup! Care to explain why? Later. Town first.
That was surprisingly easy. Doesn't hurt that I resist pretty much everything back there. You're a beast, Cutman. Yeah, uh, thanks. Why were we here again? Two reasons. One, we're going to talk to this guy to get him to supposedly teach us how to catch pokemon.
Or, y'know, wait until he's had his coffee. What a jerk. Ehhh, people get like that when they haven't had their drugs. Drugs? Coffee. Specifically, caffeine. Ever heard someone say they NEED coffee? They're not kidding. Eugh. Okay, what's the other thing?
Insert joke about Oak's balls. Great. My trainer has the mind of a five-year-old.

While I remember the game gimmicks for the second half, I apparently forgot some of the story details, such as this one. Though a few bits and pieces are coming back. Let the weirdness begin.

Update #2: Family Ties
Well, he hasn't gotten me killed yet, so that's good. I could say the same, really. So, you got to and from Viridian safely? Good. Yeah. And, naturally, I have your pokeballs. Here, heads up.
Very good, very good. Thank you. Silly question, though. I noticed that there's a clear route there with no grass. That's not a question. No, it's not, but this is: why didn't you get it yourself? Because the parcel wasn't the point. I needed to see how you'd handle a simple mission. By...going to the nearby town...and retrieving a thing? You've been acting strangely, I wanted to make sure I didn't make a mistake. Well, I feel fine, so don't worry about it.
Okay, let's hear it - hey, when did you get here? I came in while you were chatting. Okay, Doc. Let's hear it, where both of us can hear. All right. A bit of background, first: it's been a few years since the Drain. Pokemon all over Kanto have had their energy drained, but only eight types: Rock, Water, Electric, Grass, Poison, Psychic, Fire, and Ground. That sounds familiar... Indeed. The receptacles need to be destroyed for their energy to be liberated. When it happened, your Kabuto was unaffected because, uh... Because it had come down with a bad case of death. Hey! Am I wrong? No, but you don't have to be a jerk about it. Er, right. And the Mankey and Hoothoot...well, Fighting and Flying attacks were unaffected. Your task, "Manic", is to find the receptacles and track down the one who made them.
It's critical that we gain knowledge of how this was done. Why? Because he asked us to. Yeeeeah, that's not gonna be good enough. Because we need a way to counter the technology. We'll see how things go. I promise I'll disable those 'receptacles', though. Hmph. Sure you will. I'll take it. Here, you're going to need more than one pokemon with you, so take these:
If you want more, you're going to have to buy them on your own. No problem, I know the drill. No, you don't! How can you possibly 'know the drill'? Why are you so blase' about this? I admit, I'm a little curious too. It's a long, LONG story. Not one I want to share right now. Doc, what the hell? I honestly don't know, and to be frank? I don't care. I was an amazing trainer back in the day. Did you know that I was ready to take on the Champion when the Drain hit?
How ready? I had cleared Victory Road. Wow. That's pretty ready. Finally, something provokes a reaction. I was in the final center when it happened. Suddenly... Suddenly your team couldn't use half of its attacks...and your strategy crumbled to pieces. Exactly.
Find out how this happened and fix it. Become the Champion. Make an old man proud. Oak. Hmm? Heh. You really are pretty much the same, no matter what version of you I meet. That's it, I'm calling it. Def- You too. First you're Gary, then you're Blue, now? Meh. Whatever. Anyway...don't worry, Pr- er, Doctor Oak. I'll fix this.
There's something wrong with you. I don't know if Gramps is responsible or not, but you keep spouting nonsense. It's not nonsense. I don't expect you to know. It's not nonsense to you because you're...how can I put this... You think I'm crazy. Look. Stay here with Gramps. Whatever he did wrong, he can fix it. I'm tough enough to take care of this. ...you know, I take it back. You're different from the other versions somehow. I just have to ask. Are you genuinely crazy? Because you won't be the first crazy partner I've had. I'm not. I have no proof, but I'm not. And even if I somehow am, I can still be useful. You can be crazy and still be right. Gramps. I'm going. Fix him, okay? Maybe he really can be useful. You know I'm not staying. I know. I still don't know what I did wrong, though. You didn't, Oak. I promise. Everything will be all right, just hold the fort and...don't die, okay? Die? Who said anything about dying? Right, right. Nevermind.
You're an interesting one, Manic. I'll have to keep an eye on you. For now, go to the house next door and get a town map. You'll need to familiarize yourself with Kanto. I guess it couldn't hurt. Go, and take care. Whatever you know - whatever you think you know - if you didn't know about the Drain, you've still got a lot of adapting to do.
So you already know Kanto pretty well, huh? Been through here twice before. It was a little different the second time, but not terribly so. Let's test your knowledge. Name some towns. Okay, let's see. Viridian, Pewter, Cerulean, Saffron, Lavender, Cinnibar, Fuchsia, uh...aw, what's the other C one...the one with the department store. Celadon! At least you know about Kanto. It's a start. So, what are we doing out here? Teammate time.
Uh. It's a Poochyena. I know it's a Poochyena. What the hell is it doing here? Er...sniffing around, looks like. Poochyena don't normally live on this route! Oh yeah, guess you wouldn't know. Since the Drain, pokemon ecology has gone straight to hell. With super-effective moves suddenly gone and elemental weaknesses no longer mattering, well. Makes sense. And a Poochyena knows Dark and Normal attack; it's probably an apex predator in this route. Correct. I want one.
Okay, listen up. Uh? Trainer, right? I didn't just get snapped up by a nearsighted Bug Collector? That's...true, yes. If you're going to be on my team, here's how this works. I fight when I want to. When I don't want to fight, I don't. Excuse the hell out of you? Who died and made you Arceus? Maybe you didn't notice, but you caught an alpha male. We do things my way or we don't do things at all. Oh, great. It's Lana and Lilly all over again, except in one pokemon. Who're they? Nunya. Listen. I have the pokeball. I have the power. You can do what I ask because you want to, or you can do it because you have to. Your call. So you have a pokeball. Why should I listen to you? This is why. *pchoo* You sure know how to pick 'em. Trust me, I've had worse. See, that just doesn't follow. Yeah, it wouldn't until I explain. I'll do that sometime soon.
For now, we heal, then we make another catch. Great, maybe this one will be a little less, uh. Douchey? That works.
Oh, great. Don't worry about it. No water attacks, remember? That's not what I'm worried about. Okay, so let's make the catch. So many other options, and we had to find a Corphish...
Avast, lubbers! Be ye friend or foe? Oh Arceus I think I'm gonna die Uh, friend. Stow yer blades, then! All right, Cutman, you heard her. No more scratches. Yeah, sure. I can't wait to see this. Ye've run afoul o' Cassie Tete, former scourge of the water routes! Cassie...Tete? Be there a problem, lad?! No, no! It's a fine name. Fine. So, uh, Cassie. What's with the 'former' thing? Arrr, the wind's left me sails. Come again? Manic, Manic. Check out her attacks. Here we go...
AHHH-HAHAHAH!! Oh, man! That look on your face! So, you know, uh. One attack. Aye. And you can't use it. Aye. Well, don't Corphish learn non-water attacks? Aye, an' how'll I boost me level? Oh. Good point. So long, box fodder!
By which he means, 'Welcome aboard!' Yer not pullin' me leg, are ye? 'Cause it comes right off. Very funny, Manic. Box her and let's go. Yeah, we're not doing that. She doesn't know any attacks, Manic. At least, none she can use. Correction. She doesn't know any attacks she can use yet. Manic, then? I'm proud to sail with ye! You too, Cassie. So, I can't help but notice this little problem we're having. You're going to have to be more specific. I'm the only one who won't crumple under a stiff breeze. Fenrir hates you, and Cassie literally can't fight. These are all things that are true. So, what, you're going to have five cheerleaders and a fighter? Nope! We're going to start training. And training starts with you. *pchoo*
Don't ever do that again! Look, Fenrir. We're not the enemy. In fact, I'm going to help you. I don't need your help! Actually, you kinda do. You're a Dark-type pokemon with no Dark-type attacks. You aren't even the highest-level pokemon in your area. Rrrrrr... More importantly, when we caught you, you were alone. Let me guess: not tough enough to run a pack? I ought to bite your face off! Fenrir. You're level 3 right now. In general, pokemon that stick with me wind up in the sixties to eighties. Tauros-shit. No lie. But first, we need some basic training. Let's call a truce for now. If you don't see results, I'll release you, no harm done. ...fine. For now.
(Some time later...)
Who's the surf 'n turf? I be Cassie Tete, ye scurvy scalawag! She can't fight. Scuttle that! Not much of a fighter, huh? No, I mean she literally can't fight. Her only attack is a Water move. For now. Aye...'tis true. But, just like Cutman helped you train, you're both going to help Cassie train. And you're going to benefit from it yourselves, too. I guess I'll teach her. It's your lucky day, uh, Cassie! I'll break out th' rum.
(Even more time later...)
AT LAST! Cassie Tete, terror o' the deep, is back! Not bad, not bad. Stick with me, you'll keep learning. Well, that only took forever. Are we under a particular time limit? Depends on how far ahead of us you want your brother to get. I'm sorry, my what now? Your brother. Spiky hair, thinks you're insane? Wait...that's my brother?! You didn't know? Buh...
Okay. Shake it off, Manic. He be talkin' to himself! I'm fine, I'm fine. Okay. Everyone is a reasonably respectable level. Gotta admit, I'm looking even more buff than before. There's more where that came from, if you stick around. Not that you have a choice. So, where to now? I want to have words with someone, and I know exactly where they'll be.
What? No, that's stupid. Then why are you here? Because I want to talk to you. How did you know I'd be here? You always are. You're still on that, huh? I guess Gramps didn't set you straight. Oh well, I see you found some new friends. Avast! Do you even bench? Yeah. Look, that's not what I wanted to talk to you about. Do ye hear whistlin'? Shhh.
Yeah, quite a b- aw, damn it. Don't take it too hard. I'll send you home, then Gramps can get you taken care of. That's not how I operate. Well, you've certainly got spirit. I hope Gramps can preserve that.
Level TEN?! Wait, now both of your pokemon are strong against my starter? Damn it! And that Cacnea will exploit Cutman's double-weakness when he evolves. Ick. Do we gamble that it doesn't have a Grass attack yet? Gamble? Hell no! Fenrir, I need a hand here. Of course you do.
And stay down! Whew! Uh, thanks. Pfft. Easy pickings. Not bad, but you know what's next. Oh...shit. Whatever it is, I'm sure we can handle it. You can handle a Mankey that knows Low Kick? Oh...shit. There's only one thing I can do.
Avast, ye bilge Rattata! Manic. You know Water attacks have no energy now. That I do. Your Poochyena is barely hurt. Are you really stalling for a sliver of health? There's no stalling. Cassie is my ace against your Mankey. Wait a minute...
I get it. That's why your team is at level ten, isn't it? So that Cassie could learn Vicegrip. Bingo. Hmm. Maybe that fight at the lab wasn't just a fluke. I still think you're crazy, and I'm worried about when that'll come back to bite us, but you at least seem to be a competent battler. Runs in the family, I guess. Ah, so you heard. Yeah, we're brothers. That doesn't make any sense, though. Where are our parents? I'm pretty sure that Psyduck isn't my mother. That's probably a question you should save for Gramps. Anyway, later.
Yeah...yeah, you too. Okay, where to now? Pewter. The old guy should let us through now that we have our pokedex.
That is a pokedex. Isn't it nice? Sure is! But if you're gonna fill it, you need to know how to catch pokemon. He's joshin', aye? He's just old. It's okay, it's okay. Let him do his thing. Well, if you say so.
Arrr, poisonous bugger. Without the poison, I remind you. Still gets Poison Point, right? Better not to risk it. Let him be. See, normally you'd reduce its health, but I don't have any pokemon of my own. So...here we go! Aaaand done. Thanks for the lesson, now...
It sure was! Now, if you could just sort of step aside... Mmmmn, sure you don't want some coffee? Nah, not really. Just need to get by. Yeah, just give me a minute. Sure, no big rush. ... ... ... How about now? I don't feel so good. But you just had your coffee!
Okay, let's get you back to your place so you can get some aspirin or something. What a barnacle! Uhm. Is he dead? Can we eat him? No, we can't eat him! And he's not dead. He's just sleeping. Hey, c'mon, wake up!
Yeah, no, we covered that. You caught a Weedle, remember? Heh heh! I sure did. Sucker never knew what hit him! And you've had your coffee. Yup! Too strong, though. You're sorta in my way. Sorry about that! Manic? Uh oh. All right, look. I've watched you lay here in the street and done absolutely everything else I can. You are seriously in my way right now. I can't continue until you move out of the way. I've asked nicely, I've tried to help, but I don't have the luxury of being gentle about this anymore. Please move! Ugh, fine, fine. Finally.
THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT! Know how to catch pokemon? AAAAAGH!!

Update #3: Getting Warmer
Hmmm. Different, but it might as well be a ledge. We oughtta keel-haul the lubber! I don't even know what that is, but it sounds bad. No. So you're just going to keep searching for a way around him. We have to continue north. There has to be a way. Even Darkrai couldn't put me in a situation where I literally couldn't proceed, and he's no longer in the picture. I bet I know how to deal with the old guy. Just a sec. I have another idea.
Done wasting our time yet? Man, it doesn't even have an item on it. Oh, wait. Let me guess. With your fancy bipedal movement, you're just so much better suited to moving the old man. That's why we're already past him, right? Okay, okay! Fine! At this point, I'll try just about anything. Finally.
AUGH! Get him off! Fenrir! What do you think you're doing?! Well, if the rest of you would help, I could eat him and we could get past! Uhhhh. Manic? The authorities don't take kindly to this sort of thing. Fenrir. We are NOT eating the old man. That is non-negotiable. Oh, sorry! I must have missed your genius plan. Let's hear it, great leader! Mutiny, eh? Well, since you asked so nicely...
Oak. That didn't take long. Right. Look, there's this old guy laying in the path in Viridian, right? And he's supposed to move once he teaches me how to catch pokemon (because I totally needed the lesson or whatever. I'm with you so far. I've done literally everything and he just. won't. move. Not everything. Okay, everything but letting Fenrir eat him. Coffee's too strong again, huh? You know about this? He does this every so often. Ugh, let me call his family to come and get him. Family? They live in Lavender Town. Get comfortable, this might take a while. Yeah, I hope you don't mind if I seek a second opinion. Best of luck!
Manic? Yeah? Why did we come here? I don't know. An' who's this? My mom-analogue for this world. I see the family resemblance. [Initiating snappy comeback.] So's your mother! Yarr, she's been at sea too long! So... Yeah. I don't know what I was expecting. Moving on!
Look. Hello to you too. Right, hello. Listen, there's apparently been a big shake-up around Kanto. Sure has! Lots of elemental powers don't work. Kanto's ecology has gone nuts. Ain't gotta tell me! I'm here to work on that, but to do that, I need to head north through Viridian Forest. Better get crackin', boyo! Sounds like a great plan! Yes! I'm glad we agree. Now, if you could just move, I'll get right on that. Nnnnnope! And yet, I can't eat him. See, this is why I should be in charge! What, everything goes in the mouth with you? I'm a Poochyena. Our mouths are food sources, manipulation tools, problem solvers...and that's not all! I...ggggh...WHY WON'T YOU MOVE?! Owwwww...
Okay. Gotta think. Where have I not been? You didn't finish out Route 22. True, but I know where that goes: the league. I admit, laddy, I'm boggled. Hey, where'd those two guys go? What two guys? The two battling over there. That were battling. And are now gone. Fenrir, that's a beach. Nothing that way but water. Ah, if only t'were so. What're you saying, Cassie? It's not just me water attacks that're in Davy Jones' locker, lad. Look further south!
Well, the water will start any moment now. Ye're sure o' that, are ye? Sure! You can Surf to and from Cinnibar Island like this. Cinnibar Island? Right. Blaine's there. Fire-type gym leader. Crazy old fart, but not a bad guy. I hate to break this to you...
Cinnibar hasn't been an island in years. Sweet mother of Arceus...what the hell happened here?! Th' water, lad. Without us water pokemon, it up and dried up. Scuttled all th' ships. This...this is wrong. Aye! That it be. No, I mean, this is very wrong. Dangerously wrong. You sure repeat yourself a lot. How can anything survive out here? It's n-not easy...sir.
An Ekans! At level...1? I didn't even know wild pokemon could be level 1. I try not to stand out, sir. Belay the 'sir' nonsense! Yes, ma'am. Of course, ma'am. Manic, maybe we should leave him. He's a Poison type, and he's level 1, and he's- On the team, if he wants to be. How about it, uh...
Oh, thank you, sir! I promise I'll be your devoted servant. I'll do anything you ask of me! My name is Snivel. Oh yeah? Clap. I'm sure I can find a way, just...a moment... HAH! Look at him go! I"m gonna like this guy. You would. Snivel. We need to get you trained up with the rest of the team. Oh, it's all right. I can just watch how the real fighters do it. Maybe at first, but sooner or later, you will pull your own weight. If you say so, sir...
And so, after literally hours of grinding...
Ohhh, I'm sorry! I'm sorry. I wish I could use this. It's...it's fine. Really. Wrap is...fine. Hey. You. Snivel. Who's the best fighter on the team? You are, Mr. Fenrir, sir! And how do you know that? Because you told me so, and you're never wrong. I'm never gonna get tired of that. You seriously think he's never wrong? Of course! He told me so, and he's never wrong! Enough, Snivel. Back to training. I'm sure you can learn a more powerful move. Of course, Mr. Manic, sir! If you say I can, I know I can.
(After even more training...)
Amazing. Just amazing. Th-thank you! Stick with me, and you'll eventually slither your way up to shit tier! Arrr, Manic. Mind if I clamp th' barnacle's lips together? Please let her. He was bad enough before he had a cheerleader. Okay, okay. Team, we don't know what's ahead, so let's have a chat for a moment. Cutman, I need you on point. If it's a desert, it'll have lots of Fire pokemon, and you'll resist them. Understood. Cassie, you'll resist Fire too, so you're backup. I'll clamp the buggers! Fenrir, you're backup for Cassie. Snivel, get your hits in where you can, but don't overstay your welcome. I guess we should give the others a chance to show their stuff. Understood, sir! All right, we've got a plan. Let's get moving!
Oh, hey, you must've noticed you can't reach Pewter, too. Keen observation. Just take the shoes...and let me leave...before I die of heat stroke. Well, I'm not one to turn down free shoes. Delighted to hear it. Now, if you'll excuse me...
Uhhh. Hm. Mr. Aide guy? The path back to Pallet is behind me! I don't think he heard ye! Bellow, from yer gut! HEY! Too late, he's gone. Have fun with that on your conscience. Shut up, Fenrir...
You could always get off your bike and walk it down the stairs. Get...off? Yeah. You know, dismount, then walk your bike down the stairs. Walk...? Yeah? Dude, I'm a biker. Right, but you do have to get off the bike sometimes, right? Uh... Okay, let me break it down for you. Where do you pee? You really wanna know? Okay, you know what, no. No I don't. Sorry I asked. Best of luck to you.
Okay. Everyone back away...nice and slow. Oh, dear. It must be the heat getting to them. I've started panting, myself. Yarr, it be like a perpetual hotfoot! It's not that bad, c'mon. Sure, it's warm, but it's not the end of the world. Yet. Here, lemme spin my legs. Aim me at the others. Hey, slick! You're like a portable fan! A trick I learned from an old buddy. I can't do it forever, though. I read you loud and clear. Onward and forward!
Bikers who can't dismount? Hikers with Magikarp? Has the world gone mad?! I knew he'd start to break under the stress. S-sir? Are you all right? Yeah, sure. I was just messing with you. Heh, gotcha! Avast, ye sod! Don't try to make a fool of ol' Cassie! Heads up, I don't think he was kidding. Wait, what?
He...really does have six Magikarp. Wow. All at a high enough level to know Tackle. No fucks given. Hey, Fenrir, move aside! Let Snivel have a shot. Oh, thank you! To think of me at a time like this, I- Just Wrap them. With pride, sir! Wait. The last one is different. Send me in. You're sure? Just do it!
Okay, wait, no. What? That's impossible. What is? A Gyarados at level 1. What's so impossible about it? What's so- Magikarp evolves into Gyarados at level 20! And yet, here it is. You- I- You can't fault his logic. Fine. Fenrir, get that thing out of my sight.
That was so easy it was boring. Hey, you're the one who said that one was different. It was! Okay, I can't argue with that. How did you get a Gyarados at level 1, buddy? It...evolved from a Magikarp? Wow, you're thick. I - what - nevermind! Just nevermind!
Mmm, fish sounds pretty good right now. I admit it, it kinda does. But there are no fish here! It's a desert! Would you like me to try to find some fish for you, sir? Stow yer caterwaulin'. These scurvy swabs have fish on the brain! Thank Arceus, at least someone's kept their wits about them. Stay nearby, Cassie. Aye aye!
Manic...look...the others...could probably use...a break... No, I get it. No worries. Everyone back in their pokeballs. I'll get us back to town. Oh, that's mine? Thank you, sir! Thank you v- *pchoo* Keep me close at hand. *pchoo* Just hurry up and- *pchoo* You too, Cutman. Beats walking. *pchoo*
Yeah, I'll take ten pokeballs, and three potions, and a few Antidotes, and a Paralyze Heal. Loaded for bear, hmmm? Yeah, I found this crazy area...eh, nevermind. Don't worry about it. That'll be - wait, did you just spend all of your money? Totally worth it, trust me. Thanks!
*pchoo x4* Another looney, huh? Careful. What do you mean, 'careful'? Do I look Careful to you? Fenrir, I'm not joking around. V-very perceptive, sir... Aye. There be somethin' wrong in th' fellow's eyes. I see it too, now. Get ready, everyone! Tougher than me? I don't think so! Bring it on!
(In the middle of the battle...)
Hah! Much better. Fantastic. Hey. Fenrir is part of our team. An asset to one of us is an asset to all of us. Yeah! What he said.
I think I'm going to start keeping track of the impossible things I see. That's two... He looks pretty possible to me... Kill him! Whoah, easy there. What's up? I c-can try, sir... Like hell. That's a Mightyena. Cutman, you got this. Give the blaggard what-for!
That...was surprisingly simple. Look at him run off with his tail between his legs! Makes sense. A level 7 Mightyena may be a Mightyena, but it's also level 7.
I know, and you'd better get moving! The others are way ahead! What?! Thanks for telling me, kid! V-very clever, sir. It got the job done. Aye, let the boy live his fantasies. Fantasies, derangements, whatever you want to call them. What's important is:
We've arrived.

I will say this much: the characters in this run are *definitely* characters.

...yes, that would be a good way to describe them.
In all seriousness, this run and the next are my two favorites in the whole saga.
Also, impossible counter: 2 (so far).

Update #4: Rage Vein
Good to see some things never change. Then I've got a nasty surprise for you. Run that by me again? One of the receptacles is behind that door. We need to get in there, find this Blaine person, and destroy the receptacle. Who died and made you Slowking? No, Fenrir. He's right. That's why we're on this journey. That said...we'd be fools to go in without exploring the town first. Let's see what support we can gather.
Yer not gonna ask these sea-dogs... NOPE! Don't know, don't wanna know.
Sorry, nope. Then why are you came? Looking around? No for tourist spot. Leave you now! All right, all right. Sheesh. Don't get your nuts in a bind.
Anybody else seeing a pattern? All of these people are begging for a bite. Yes, sir! Biting, of course. They be outta their gourds! Yeah. I was gonna go with, everyone seems to be out of their damn minds. Then you're going to love what I saw outside. Oh, Arceus. Do I even want to know?
YOU. Me! What - how did - Complete sentences, kiddo! You said you didn't have any pokemon! I don't! Then how the hell did you get here from Viridian without getting mauled?! Wouldn't you like to know! Well...actually, yes! Keep dreaming! Get a badge, then I might start to care. Now can I eat him? When're ye gonna... Manic? Rrrrrgh... You're not really going to... Nnnnnno. No. Still can't eat him. Yeah, but you're super-tempted to say yes, aren't you? More than I care to admit. Come on, doing something productive will take my mind off of him
*sigh*
And we're crawling around this dump why, again? Fer loot! Actually, she's not far off. There should be a key somewhere in here. Is that the only reason, sir? Actually, there are some pretty cool pokemon in here. I think there are Vulpix, and Raticate would be really useful, and-
Hi. I'm Bump. *snrk* Hi, Bump. Manic here was just saying how much he wanted a Gulpin! Was he? I must have *OOF* Right...of course he was... That's great. I'm Bump. I'm a Gulpin. Aye, that ye are. Manic? Are you okay? YES. I'm FINE. Welcome aboard...Bump. Nice to meet you. I'm Bump. Let's just get everybody healed. And then maybe let me have a minute to myself.
AT THIS RATE I'M PRETTY SURE OF IT. Oh! Uh, s-sorry? No...*sigh* No, it's fine. Sorry about that. Rough day? That seems like such an inadequate way to put it, but...fundamentally, yes. Keep a stiff upper lip! It only gets easier! Right! Right. Thanks. I'll try. Bye! Good luck! Maybe. Meh, everything else about Kanto has changed. I bet there aren't even any Fire types in-
Wow. That's pretty impressive. I learned new words today. Oh, man. Oh, man, that is too good! I can't...I can't breathe! Oh, dear. He seems very upset... Let 'im get it outta his system. I wouldn't care to clash swords with a fellow in such a foul mood. I think I found another one. But this one's big. And hot. Ow.
Fuck! Okay, okay, we got this. Cutman, get in there. We need rocks now. I'm on it. Feelin' better? Not...really. But I'll live. Aww. He doesn't like me. What? No, no. You're fine, Bump. It's not you. You're sure? Sure! I bet you'll be a fine, uhm... ...begins with S... Swalot! Right! I bet you'll be a fine Swalot. In due time. In the meantime, stick close to Snivel, okay? You're my new buddy, buddy. Yes, sir! I'll see to it that he receives all the training you have to give. Thank you, sir!
After a bit of training...)
Oh, thank Arceus! Does my new attack please you? Like you wouldn't believe! Wrap isn't useless, but fighting with it is glacially slow. I'm very sorry, sir! I didn't mean to inconvenience you. No, it's fine. Sheesh...I'm doing that a lot lately. I need to get my act together. I admit, Doc didn't paint quite this picture of you. Remind me to ask you about that later. Sure, sure. Let's just get this part over with first.
Arr, lad, d'ye know how to steer this ship? I'm pretty sure. The doors in here are on a switch. Flip a switch on a statue, the doors swap out. How d'ye know that? I told you, I've done this before. Could you just stop being crazy for five minutes and get us through here alive? Why is everyone fighting? It's all right, they do this a lot. I think it's because they're friends. Ohhhhhh. Okay!
Uh... Hm? What's up? Nothing! Nothing at all. But I think this is the wrong way. Yeah, looks like a dead end. You sure you're okay? Sure! I just want to get out of here as soon as possible. Don't worry, we're making good progress.
Uh. You don't remember which one to use. Correct! How about the big one? It's nice and big. Nay, lad. If I were hidin' buried treasure, I'd put it in th' little one! I have to admit, Cassie's logic seems a bit more sound. Oh, okay. I bet you're both real smart.
I thought you said you'd done this before? So I don't remember everything perfectly. It's fine, we can go back up and try again. Healing first. Of course, healing first. Nobody's dying on me. Not even me? Not even you, Bump.
Okay. Here we go. Finally. Shut yer trap, ya scallawag. Hey, I say what I want! Both of you stop arguing! Honestly. We've got a trainer battle coming up, so keep on your toes!
Uh... At last, my new experiment is almost complete! Pal, unless your experiment is to see how fast your Abra can get KO'ed, I think you're in for a disappointment. We'll see about that! Make your move! Ugh. Fenrir, would you be so kind as to one-shot this thing? I'll never say no to free XP. Abra, telefrag! Wait, who's Fenrir?
AAAGH...NOT COOL, NOT COOL! Wait, telefr...FENRIR! Nooo! You'll ruin everything! OOMPH! Get off of me! You're too heavy! Dammit, Fenrir, that thing was trying to teleport into the same spot as you! Really? What does that do? Basically? Explode you both into tiny bits.
Fortunately, when it locked onto you, I don't think it expected me to tackle you out of the way. Why'd you do that, anyway? I could've taken it! No, you couldn't. Or maybe you could! I don't know, okay? This isn't how Teleport is supposed to work. Hmph! You narrow-minded plebs always talk about how things are 'supposed' to be. If we listened to you, science would never progress!
Hey, labcoat. Hmm? I couldn't help but notice you're out of usable pokemon. Yes, I'll have to try again later...annoying. You tried to kill Fenrir. All in the name of science, my good man! You have until the count of three to get out of here before I give you a wedgie tall enough to floss your teeth! What? ONE. How dare you- TWO. EEP! Leaving now, bye!
This doesn't change anything, you know. I know. It's not like I owe you. Naturally. I could've taken the hit. Maybe. I could've taken the hit! Okay, okay. You could've taken the hit. What if it had killed you? It wouldn't have. Oh. ... ... ... how do you know? Let it go, Bump. Okay. Sorry.
Did I do good? Yeah! Sure. New attack. Awesome. Good one, Bump. Yaaaaaay! Arceus, take the wheel... Avast! A bit o' help here!
Sweet mother of...Cassie, are you okay? Lemme think on that fer a second:
NO! All right, people! Here's what we're doing. Snivel. I want you to get in there and Intimidate it once, then get out of there in case it has a ground attack. Switch into Fenrir, whose job it is to get in a few good Bites and hopefully lower its HP. Once it's in range, we're bringing Cutman in for one good Rock Throw. Everyone clear? Y-yes, sir! Right! What about me? Hang back, Bump. This thing might one-shot you.
(And that's basically how it went!)
Wow. Such key. Very secret. Much mansion. Wow. You know there's a scientist standing right over there, right? Sarcasm. I found a friend. I don't know if I trust this place for friends at the moment. Who-
-three. That makes the count three. How so? How'd it get down the stairs? I...honestly have no idea. Three.
(And so, after a while of trying to escape...)
Could I have...just a moment? If it's okay with you... My everything hurts. Get th' butter, I'm near done... I think I have a boo-boo. Thank goodnezz! we're never going in there again. Yeah, uh, about that. WHAT. We need to train. That should be pretty obvious. As long as we stay near the entrance, we should be fine. I swear, if we don't rest first, I'll eat you in your sleep. Heh, good luck with that. Okay, okay. First, a bit of rest. Then we train.
I remembered a thing! What thing? I forgot. You forgot the thing you remembered? I dunno. You don't know if you forgot the thing you remembered. Maybe? Nevermind! Sorry I asked.
Okay. Here we are, key in hand. All right! I'm ready to win this. Nope. Oh? Who're you gonna use, the snake? The Bump? Nope. None of them are ready. Neither are you. Then who is, smart guy?
Nobody. Arrrrgh! I be spoilin' fer a fight! Listen, we were encountering some reasonably high-level pokemon in there. Enough that we were in fairly bad shape by the time we got out. Exercising caution is always a good idea! Right, what he said. It's reasonable to expect Blaine's gym trainers to be tougher than them, and for Blaine to be tougher than them. What, so we just walk away? Laaaaaame. Actually, no. We're going to take a quick peek inside, just to see if the gym is like I remember it.
You mean Burn Heals. No, I mean Rawst berries. Er, that's a quaint idea, but where do I get Rawst berries? This is Kanto, right? It sure is! Land of plenty. You saw the desert outside, right? Don't be fooled! Just stop by the pokemart and you'll see. Okay, okay. I suppose I might as well.
WOW. That's new! I'm happy that you're happy, sir! Sure, but how will you afford all of this? Remember when I insisted on grabbing those vitamins? Yeah, so? Each one sells for almost 5k. We're going to make some serious bank. Now, I want ten Sitrus, one Escape Rope, ten Rawst...

Update #5: Molotov - vs. Blaine
Well...sure, if you're offering. What a silly question. Hmmm. You know, just because we answered the questions correctly doesn't mean we can't fight the trainers. You mean pick a fight? Something like that. Maybe you're not so bad after all.
A Rock move, a Grass move, and now a Ground move? Niiiiice. Good thing I'm on your side. Aye, bucko! Good on ye! You're very impressive, Mr. Cutman, sir! Buttering me up won't get you anywhere. I...I see...
Of course. Incorrect. The penalty is death. What?! Bring 'em on! Stupid computer, I'm certain that Slugma evolves into Magcargo. Whether you're right or wrong, here comes the goon!
Oh, come on. Now you're just being facile. It be 'nay', aye? Er, right. Nothing evolves forty times, Cassie. Be right with ye! Hmmm?
Avast, lubber! I'll keel-haul ye! I don't like the looks of that. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the 'on fire' look either. Uh... He's strong. That. That right there is our problem. Okay, so he's strong. So what? So we're seeing gym trainers with level 15 pokemon. That means we should plan for Blaine to have at least a level 17-18.
*sigh* Yes, but I'm sensing a theme here, so bring the battle. You knowingly answered wrong? I'm not gonna tell a lie because it'll save me a battle. Slugma isn't bad, but it's a pokemon. It can be beaten like any other. You're gonna eat those words! HAIL SLUGMA! Yeah, no. Fenrir. That's right, get nice and close! I'm in the mood for a fight-
-'cause I'm feeling lucky! Of course he's the first team evolution. V-very handsome, sir. Boo. EEP! Don't be such a bully, Fenrir. Sheesh. Let's keep going, there's still fighting to do.
Yes. YES. I don't care if the answer is no, the answer is yes, it is NOT a striptease! Are you sure? What if he- Idea! Let's talk about anything else.
Dude. What? No, but it should. Sir...what is Chaos Dunk? I don't know, but it sounds amazing. Can you imagine? Come on and slam, and I don't give a damn! Lad? Meh, nevermind. I just think that Chaos Dunk is a move that should exist if it doesn't. And if it does, I want it.
Aaaand here he is. He looks...strange. Yarrrrr, let's get 'im! Nope! What, again? Let's review, shall we?
If Blaine's gym trainers have level 15 pokemon, Blaine himself has a good chance of having a level 18. So? We're all level 18! That's true, but you're ignoring something: Cassie, Snivel and Bump can't use their elemental moves, which leaves only you and Cutman. I bet I could fight. I'm sure you could, buddy...but you're at a disadvantage. I don't like disadvantages. Seems like you're already at one. Precisely! So I need something going in my favor. Say, a couple of extra levels?
Hey, where are you going? Aren't you going to deal with Blaine? Nope nope nope nope nope nope-
You could've said 'later'. I think we got the point across okay. Is it time for more training, sir? It is. And really, just call me Manic. Yes sir, sorry sir! *sigh* Let's just get to it.
Hey now. And I think I can use it, sir! You should be able to. Now, between Bump and Snivel, we can cause sleep or paralysis as we see fit! Useful. All hands on deck, I'm about to add to me arsenal! Oh yeah? Great, let's see what you've got!
Awww. Er... It's fine. It's still better than Bubble. And hey, who knows? Maybe it'll still be relevant when we get Water's element back. An' maybe Aipoms'll climb outta me backside. That sounds very uncomfortable. If you have the chance to learn the move for that, don't.
(After quite a while...)
Okay, it's time. Time to face Blaine, right? Right. And this time, we fight him, right? Right! No Blazikenning out at the last second. Fenrir, I get it. You'll have your fight. Hmph. I'd better.
But you can call me...Blaineferno! Call you...what? Blaineferno! Pffft... What? AHHHH-HAHAHAHA!!! Oh Arceus! Say it again! Say your name again! You dare mock Blaineferno! *snicker* Wow. He's not kidding. Oh Arceus, oh Mew, that is too funny!
Because Blaineferno will turn you to toast! *snrk* Oh, man. That is just...wow. On purpose and everything. With a straight face. Are we going to fight, or are you going to stand there laughing? Right, right. Whew. Wow. Okay. Look, we're here for the receptacle that's keeping the Fire energy from all the pokemon around. Where is it? Right in front of you! I don't see it. It's right here! ...is it invisible or something? You idiot! I am the receptacle! You're what now?!
I am the receptacle! Fire energy is mine to dole out as I see fit! When I'm done with you, you'll be a pile of ashes! How can a human hold that much energy? Idiot, who said I was human?! Manic, he's not real - he's mechanical! A robot! No shit? Er...right! No shit. Nice. Then I don't have to hold back! Fenrir, let's ruin his whole damn day! Now, this is a side of you I could get used to!
A...Castform? You know what a Castform is? Yeah, but they're incredibly rare. How did you get a hold of one? That doesn't matter, it's going to burn you to a crisp! Hah! That's adorable. No, seriously. How did you get a Castform?
Gahhh! At least it had time to set up Sunny Day. Now it's really time to turn up the heat! Come out, Magmar! Wait, you have a Magmar?! Fuuuuuuck! We're sunk, lad. No, wait. I've seen Magmar show up underleveled before. Granted, that was mostly in Johto, but it could happen here as well. Ye think we've got a chance? Yeah, but we need resistance and super-effectiveness...because if I was Blaine, I'd make that my ace. Cutman, c'mon out! You mean Blaineferno. Heh,..yeah, okay, sure!
Ohhhh, balls. If that's not his ace, we're in trouble! We may be in trouble anyway! It's okay, I have a plan. Of course! Manic always has a plan. That's a relief. Let's hear it! Okay, you see that Magmar? Sure. Hit it...with a rock. Very hard. Okay, and then? If it's still standing, hit it with another rock. Aaaaand...? Repeat until problem is solved. I hate my life.
Ow ow OW OW hotfoot! It's working! Punch more rocks into his word-hole until he shits bricks! Eloquent. At least I understand it. I didn't come back from the dead...only to die again...to a mutant Psyduck!
See? Operation Throw Rocks At It was a glowing success! That's it. After we're done here, we're going back to see Dr. Oak. Something's wrong with you. Okay, okay. Hey! Remember me?! Oh yeah. Sorry, Blainefern...Blainefffff... Blaineferno! Sorry, I just can't bring myself to say it. Looks like you've still got one left. Let's do this! Bump, see if you can put it to sleep. Okay, I'll try. It's Houndour time! What?
Aw, man... Don't get stones in yer shoes now, lad! Awww, it's cute. Yeah. Yeah, it kinda is. ...sir? Huh? Oh, right. Sorry. Bump, give it a good Yawn. Okay.
I don't think...he likes me... Gah! Bump, eat a Sitrus! Really? Sure, sure, he gets a Sitrus. You weren't even close to death, Fenrir. Quit whining. Still ignoring me, huh? Well, let's see how easy you find it to ignore me when your pokemon is...
...on fire! It's okay, it's okay. Here, have a Rawst. Thanks. Houndour, Ember it again! Burned again? What are you, covered in oil? I don't feel so good... Fenrir. I need you in here to finish this.
So long as you're done making goo-goo eyes at another canine, fine! Oh-ho! The green devil's got th' lad! Absinthe? Nay, jealousy! Weird. I thought he hated us. Oh, no! He's just very, uh, complex. SNIVEL. That's enough. Yes sir, of course sir, very sorry sir! Far be it from me to break up this touching scene, but you know what they say: I do? Make a Mightyena on fire, it's warm for the night.
Set a Mightyena on fire, it's warm for the rest of its life! HAH! Hey, matchstick. Ever consider a career in comedy? No. Good. Hey! C'mere, Fenrir. Your Dark moves won't do much, and you're mostly a physical attacker anyway. Have a Rawst.
That's better, okay, Let me take another shot at- Ember time! Uh oh. It's fine, you can tank an Ember. I've seen you do it. It'll just-
OH COME ON. A crit AND a burn? What, did you use Focus Energy and get Serene Grace while I wasn't looking?! If you had something of your own to fight for, you might be doing better too! You might be surprised. Do you even know why we were made, we receptacles? I'm not talking about that. I've got a bigger picture to worry about. A second mission? I have friends...friends who can't come home until I fix things. Fenrir, here, take a Sitrus. Rawst. Sitrus. Berry up until you're good to go. I'll take it! *chomp munch scarf* So you have friends? What, like a pack?
A lot like a pack. They're pretty awesome. I think you'd get along well with Jalen. Mightyena? Dragonite. Oh, m-my... They came to help me, but now they're stuck where they are. I have to help them...and the first step is to take Blaine down. Trying to get your pack back together...
That's a cause I can get behind. Well done, Fenrir! Thanks for the assist. Yay! We won. Yeah, well. I only did it 'cause you begged. Are ye boggled in th' head? He didn't- Hey, if I have to beg, I have to beg. I'm just glad it worked. But he didn't beg, I'd bet me last dubloon! Not really the point right now.
The others will...stomp you flat... The hell?! He just vanished into motes of light! I think you'll find they all do that. Cutman, what else are you not telling me? We really do need to see Dr. Oak soon. He never had a chance to explain- Manic? Are you all right? Do you hear that? Hear what, sir?
...Flame Cannon? What the hell is Flame Cannon? MANIC. Can you hear me? Yeah, I'm not deaf! We need to get back to Dr. Oak. I'll keep that in mind.
Before we go, yoink, free TM. Manic, I'm not kidding. You wanted answers, he has them. Listen. Cutman. I've been at this for a while. Here we go again. I've found that if you press too hard for answers, they'll elude you at every turn...but if you're patient, they'll find you. Wise words, sir, wise words! What a bunch o' bilge. Fine, as ye like. Where do we set sail to now?
Three guesses.

A color and font change were necessary for Bump; his color on this forum was too similar to Manic's. I had trouble telling them apart without context.

Update #6: Gulag
New route, new catch, right? He doesn't look too happy about it. Huh? No, no. It's not that. What's your problem, then? This is basically a dried-out version of the Route 20 I'm used to. So? Route 20 is big. Again. So? No, I mean really big. REALLY big. Like, the size of two routes smooshed together. And there won't be a town on the way. Aye...I'm hopin' she'll be the same someday. This is part of my task, Cassie. Just be patient.
A Numel! I haven't had one of these before. As many of them as we've been fighting, I guess we're due. Ah, another lass o' the sea! Okay. Bump, put her to sleep, would you? Okay. That's easy. Now, a couple of good hits, annnnnd...bingo!
Hello there. Are you lost? No. Well, yes, in a way. It's okay, you can tell me. This is definitely Kanto, but not the one to which I'm accustomed. Well...I can't say I understand, but you wouldn't have caught me if you didn't need help. I can't argue with that. All right, let's see if I can help you. I can't use my Ground attacks, but Fire works all right. I'm Matilda, but you can call me Matty. Thanks, Matty! I'm Manic. Now, before we continue...
Do you...always put...everyone who helps you...through these rigors? Actually, yeah, he does. Seriously? Uh huh. He said he didn't want me to die, so we fought a lot and now I'm not dead. Aww, that's sweet. You sure aren't. Anyway, now that you're caught up with everyone else - and everyone else has gained a level along the way - I think it's time we push through the Route, don't you? Just let me stock up on some more Sitrus, and we're off. With a full team of six, how can we lose? Cutman. Don't ever say that!
I have no intention of doing that. She was one of the best Companions, and helped the Doctor through countless scrapes. I will admit, though, she did pretty much play out her plotline. Oh, yeah, we forgot to mention. He's insane. Oh! Well. Heh. I'm sure he's not dangerous... Depends on if yer on his side or not, lass! He's very strong, and we're very lucky to have him! Thanks, Snivel. Anyway, let's see. If these are the Seafoam analogues, then we should be able to just-
-go...into the cave and get through.
Uh...Seafoam 'Well'? It's not all that's changed, bucko! Seriously, does this look like a well to you? How should it look, sir? You know! Like a well? How's that? Hm. A well is a round depression in the ground in which water is stored.
Water...check! No, no, Snivel. You're supposed to be able to bring water up out of a well from the outside! We're here now. Why not just make the most of it? Meh, yeah, I suppose. Let's see what we can catch here. Calm down, Satan. Fenrir, at this point, our catches are backups. We're rolling six deep, and rotating someone in means rotating someone out. So long as it's not me. Well, I can't rotate Cutman out, so there are only five possibilities. We'll see.
Cloyster, huh? Has some potential, I think. That's a Shellder. Sure, it is now. I don't follow you. Matty, look at our team. What do you see? Kabuto, Mightyena, Corphish, Ekans, Gulpin, Numel. Why? That's what you see. I see Kabutops, Mightyena, Crawdaunt, Arbok, Swalot, and Camerupt. That kind of thinking could make you reckless. Maybe he needs glasses. I've always taken the long view with my pokemon. You lot are no exception.
(Multiple ladders and levels and two ice puzzles later...)
Ugh, finally. Are you okay? What? Yeah, just not looking forward to more endless schlepping through the desert. Yeah, I hear you, it is pretty hot out there. Is it? I hadn't really noticed. Try walking it with a fur coat sometime! No thanks. You do seem to shake off the sun well! Maybe it comes from the other deserts I've walked. Unova, Hoenn, portions of Sinnoh... You've never been to any of those places, though. I know you don't believe me, but I really have. Sometime when we're in less danger, I'll share some stories with you. Now, out into the sandy hell.
Oh, hey! Goodness! Makes sense. Come to think of it, it does. All the underground water must've kept this area fertile. Feel better? A little. We can take a break, if you'd like. Nnnnah. There are pokemon suffering out there without access to their natural defenses. The longer we wait, the longer that lasts. You really do care, don't you? He does. It's sort of nauseating. I was going to say 'admirable', but as you like. Nothing admirable about being a decent person. Anyway, let's get back on the path. Blasted desert, here we come.
Oh, right. The other thing I didn't miss about people around here. Sweaty smell? Pokemon tough as nails? It seems like half the humans in this region are bugfuck crazy.
Okay, wait, what?! But how...? Most impressive, ma'am! Don't be a cad, introduce us! Oh, uh, right. Matty, this is a robotic Psyduck that thinks it's my mother. Robotic Psyduck that thinks it's my mother, meet Matty. ERROR. Fomul-*kzzzk*Initiati-*kzzzfzzzz*You've been a bad basketball hoop, isn't that nice? Come give your mother a kiss for TEN THOUSAND spankings! We'll...just report this to Oak...when we see him next. Trust me, I'm pretty sure he knows.
(In due course...)
Oh! Sir! I've done it, I've evolved! Nice one, Snivel! Yeah, yeah, nice second-place finish. Let's not forget who evolved first. Of course not, sir! Great, now he's a big arse-kisser. Cassie! We should be happy for him. You look very nice, Snivel. Oh! Uh, th-thank you very much, miss!
Uh oh. Don't worry, sir! I'll make myself useful! I didn't doubt it, Snivel...but that's not what I'm worried about. Want to share? Look at its level. Notice anything unusual? Not really. The last several trainers have all been like that. Exactly. I'm not sure how, but we're getting outpaced. What's the plan? Momduck may be malfunctioning, but she still heals everyone. Any time we look too banged up, we're going back for heals.
New route, new catch! Ahhh. Feel th' blessed rain? I sure do. Hmmm, weird. Ahhh*gurgle* Tsk. Don't sit there with your mouth open, now. You'll drown. Sorry. What's weird about it? Even a blind pirate'll find a dubloon now an' then. Yeah, but...ah, skip it. I'm just being weird. Hey, there are some people gathered over there, maybe they're helpful!
Arceus, not this again. No. No, I will not. Why do you hate Lord Slugma?! Hate? Whoah, whoah. I don't hate Slugma. Then why won't you praise him? You know, you can like things without having to worship them. I have nothing against Slugma, but I don't worship them. Enough talk. Have at you! You asked for it, lady!
(Actually, all four of them asked for it. And I gave it to them!)
Hmmm, a Gastly. I can't help ye with it, lad. Yeah...and Fenrir would one-shot it. Not my fault I'm amazing. Cutman, I think you'd have a good chance against it. Would you do the honors? Sure, shouldn't be a problem. Let's see here...
OW! Okay, easy. Let's see here. Who else can swap in safely? I could, but we already talked about this. I'm not sure anyone else can swap in safely. Is it worth it? I don't give up on my catches so easily, Matty. Even if your team is at risk? If it comes to that, we'll leave. First, Fenrir, you're up. You're not here to attack, you're here to tank. Go get 'em, sir! Ah, my work is never done. And just in case, I'm using one of these Ultra Balls.
And now we have two backup teammates. Good for you, sir! Yep! And they're both unblocked elements, Ice and Ghost respectively. I just wish Gastly was a bit more, uh... What's wrong with Gastly? I hate to say it, but it's mostly just Kanto and Hoenn Gastly. For whatever reason, their Ghost moves work on the physical plane, meaning they're much weaker. Uhhhh... Basically, there's no chance of Trina coming in unless something happens to Fenrir. And since there's no chance of that, she's boxed for life. Or death. Or whatever.
Those ledges...I recognize those ledges! Aye, 'tis a port! A port? We're on the border of Fuchsia! C'mon, let's get into town and get healed! Not so fast, buddy. Huh? Oh, hey. We're just heading into town to- I don't think so. You want to get into our little slice of heaven, you'd better be tough. Oh yeah? How tough?
This tough. Fuck. Mind your language! Not now, Matty. Okay, think. This is the Tate and Liza fight. Who? Psychic gym leaders from Hoenn. Double battle. Let's see...Matty won't have anything effective, Snivel and Bump will both take SE damage from Psychic... Better decide quick. Who's switchin', then? Both of you! Cassie, you can't use your water attacks, swap out for Cutman. Bump, swap out for Fenrir!
What'll the fossil do? Ex-fossil. And just watch! Cutman, Absorb on the Lunatone! Fenrir, Bite on the same Lunatone! Let's make this a two-on-one fight! That's hardly fair. You know perfectly well that you'd try to do the same. Exactly. Don't mistake a commendation for a condemnation. If you don't fight to win, you don't belong here. One down, one to go! Yep. Solrock, use whatever on whatever, brace yourself. You give up too easily, pal...but you're right. Second verse, same as the first. Let's finish this.
Okay, okay. You win. Go on in. Why are you out here, anyway? I'm sure you've met the Slugma cult. They're everywhere. Out in the routes, and now in Cinnibar. Cinnibar...it's spreading, then. Fantastic. I'd better report in, thanks for the info. You do that.
I've got other things I need to do.

Fuchsia is, especially for a Nuzlocker, a source of big opportunities and big dangers. I treat the Safari Zone as four separate zones. Same. It's given me a renewed love for the Rhyhorn line thanks to a previous Nuzlocke. For specifics though, I get to ignore the 'First Encounter' part, but I still only get one catch per area. To make up for it, I usually limit the number of times I can enter the Safari Zone as a whole, usually three visits.

Update #7: Blast from the Past
YES. Oh, um, you're welcome? Sorry. Just schlepped through a desert and cleared a harrowing battle. Oh, the guard! So you came from...Cinnibar?! Yeah. Next time I see Cinnibar, I hope it's thanks to a Flying pokemon. Maybe you'll find one in the Zone! I sure hope so. Anyway, thanks again! Time to explore.
Convenient, except... Except nobody even knows an HM move. Aye, he's like an anchor on a schooner, this one. Hey, time may come when we need his help. Just need to remember he's here. I'll keep his location in mind, sir! Thanks, Snivel. You do that.
Wait a minute. Do you see what I see? Hey! Hey, you! Get down from there! Fenrir! Shouting at it isn't gonna help. I see a slight problem with this. Yeah? Well, it can't get down, right? Right... How do we get up? Very good, Bump! He's right. It can't get down, but we have no way of reaching it either. Hmmm. Maybe...man, I wish we had a Flying type. Hang in there, we'll work something out!
Fishing in Kanto? Sounds like a good idea. I didn't really get to do any of that last time. Last time? It's a long story, but basically...by the time I got a Rod of any kind, fishing was disallowed. Treachery! Who'd make fishin' illegal?! It's hard to explain, Cassie. Suffice to say, it wasn't quite the law...but if I'd ignored it, someone important would've gotten hurt. I don't like it when important people get hurt. Me neither, Bump. So, I never did it. Granted, it's an Old Rod, which means Magikarp...but hey, it's something.
...oh. Water! Real, actual water! Feel free to go for a swim, Cassie. Unfortunately, this means some difficulty for us. Why? West of Fuchsia is Cycling Road. Guess what we don't have. A bicycle. And we're going to need Surf to go East... Right. Which means grinding happens in the desert, with a proliferation of Ghost and Psychic types. But before we do any of that...
Thank Arceus, they have Sitrus berries here too. And decent pokeballs! They're not just decent, they're great. The price of Super Potions doesn't seem very reasonable. Yeah, it's not. I'm guessing Super Potions don't sell very well. Trust me, kid. If I didn't have to stock them, I wouldn't. Why do you have to? Because if I don't, Silph will stop shipments. No more pokeballs, no more Repels, and so on. Ew. So noted. Sorry, but I'm sticking with the Sitrus for now. I'm on a budget. Don't have to explain to me. Good luck.
Creeper alert! Eugh. That's just unwholesome. Must...get image...of man riding in Kangaskhan pouch...out of my head... It sounds fun. Bump? Bouncy ride. Yyyyeah. Well, let's just let the nice man have his disturbing fantasies in peace. Besides, we have better things to do.
Four zones, four catches. Good for you, sir! Manic, are you sure this is right? Imagine Edgar all alone in that box with Trina. Oh, poor thing. Point taken. A bigger crew'd be handy! Speaking of handy...there's something else I'm hoping is in here. We'll see, though; at this point, I don't take anything for granted. Now, let's see what I can find, once I get past the requisite Exeggcute and the like.
A male Nidoran! Sir? Oh, I had a Nidoking on my team before. Very, VERY powerful. How powerful, sir? I watched him take an Explosion to the face and brush it off like an annoying Yanma. Oh! That's...that's very powerful!
Ggggh! What's your problem? Nevermind. Just...nope. Forever boxed. Moving on. Manic, it's a Spinarak. Damn right it's a Spinarak! Not a fan, hmm? Eugh. No. Not gonna happen. Manic, are you...afraid of Spinaraks? ... They're cute, though. They're poisonous and they have too many legs and they bite and bleagh, no. Shhh, it's okay. We still have two more catches to go. Right. You're right. Thanks, Matty. Don't mention it.
Manic! Cutman? Get him on your team. We won't have electric attacks for a while, though. I don't care. It's imperative that you get him on your team as soon as possible! I'll keep it in mind. Why is it so important? It's difficult to explain right now, and you wouldn't accept it. Just trust me. Bring him in and don't take him out. Okay, okay. I have an affinity for the Electrike line anyway. Let's just see what else...
Some things never change, I guess. An' some things won't stop changing. Hmmm. You know, HMs are programmed differently from TMs. Nerd. Whatever. I wonder if...hmmm. Hey, Cassie. Aye? Think fast!
Avast! One o' me old favorites! Cassie, I want you to try something for me. Aye? Next time you fight, I want you to try that move. It's a Water move, lad. That it is. It's worth a try, though, right? Aye. Fer you, I'll try. Thanks much. Now, I haven't made a catch for this area, so let's see...
... Manic? Shhh. Be very still. We don't want to scare him off. Boo! SO HELP ME ARCEUS IF YOU RUIN THIS FOR ME I WILL SHAVE YOU BALD AND PARADE YOU AROUND THE STREETS. You wouldn't dare. Try me. Okay, now, let's just give you some food...here you go... Can I have some? In a minute, Bump. And...ball! He's quick, he is! Damn quick. Quicker than a Charmander would normally be. Okay, a bit more food...one more ball...damn! You really want this Charmander, don't you? I've had amazing luck with the line so far. Okay, one more ball...easy...one...two...three...
JACKPOT! Hooray! Congratulations, sir! So you got a firelizard. Big deal. Food time now? Food time now, Bump. Oh, man. And with the Max Potions, Full Restore, TMs...we made out like bandits in here! We really did do startlingly well, I have to admit. I'm really happy for you. Shall we go have a look?
Why does everybody look so glum? I think it's because a lot of us are about to be boxed, sir. What makes you think so? At least one of them has to go. That Electrike needs to be part of our team. I dunno what a tank is, but that Nidoran looked good. Manic, dear, I saw your eyes light up when you caught that Charmander. I'm no fool.
I understand, sir. Snivel, I need you in here, and not just because you vacate a spot on the team for the Electrike. No? As I beat gym leaders, I'm going to get abilities back. I need you keeping track of the occupants of the box and telling me when new options become available. It's a little more behind-the-scenes, but it's still valuable. Yes, sir! As long as I can still help, I'm happy to aid you in your brilliance! Aw, man. Okay, who else? No one.
Manic...aren't you forgetting something? Oh? The Charmander. And - sorry, Bump - the Nidoran. You thought I was going to box you the moment I captured that Charmander, didn't you? I can tell you wanted to. Listen. Matty. Remember when we were talking just outside Cinnibar, and I asked what you saw when you looked at the team? Well, yes... Wait, you're keeping the chaff on the team? You're here, aren't you? Hey! So I'm not gettin' boxed? Bump. Buddy. I told you that you'd make a great Swalot, right? Uh huh. What kind of trainer would I be if I didn't give you a chance to prove it? You'd be an awful lot of them. I'm proud to have you as my trainer. And I'm proud to have my team as it is. Now, let's keep grinding, Johann has a lot of catching up to do.
Mmmf. Trouble? The rain always makes me a little melancholy. Makes me think of home. Pallet? Littleroot. Would it help to talk about it? I feel like I should tell you the whole story at once.
My story starts in Hoenn. My mother was a prostitute; I didn't understand at the time, but she did it to support us. My father was gone; I thought he was just a scumbag, but it turned out he was trying to protect me. Oh...oh dear. Yeah. I was a self-centered kid. I thought I knew what pain was, but I was naive. Anyway, I wound up getting mixed up in the fight between Team Aqua and Team Magma. The first wanted more water, the second more land. Either one would've spelled disaster. I got a team together, and we stopped them...but that wasn't enough. The Champion was a useless, corrupt man, and he had to be shut down too. Wait. You're a champion? YOU? Yeah. That should've been enough, but Wallace - the deposed champion - struck a deal with Darkrai. I didn't get to stick around for long before I vanished, dragged across the entire world in different aspects and different times. There's no way Oak came up with this...continue.
I was separated into five aspects of myself, the five aspects Wallace thought had beaten him. The goal was simple: run each aspect through a wringer. If any part of me failed to pass its test, there would be no Manic left. So there was a whole buncha yous? Different versions of me, sent through worlds created by Darkrai. He couldn't kill me outright; turns out there are rules against that. But he could make tests for me to fail. For example, my experience was sent to Unova...but he put me in a world where I was hated for a crime I didn't commit. Also shoved me into a female body. Transplanted...your consciousness? Right. Just like my determination was split between two versions of Johto - one at war, one not - and kept switching back and forth. Okay, I admit it. You're entertainingly crazy. Thanks...I think?
Oooh, Flying type. Could sure use a Spearow. I wanna hear more! Oh, right. Uhm, let's see. There was the Sinnoh version of me, Courage, struck with a wasting disease that I think technically killed me for a brief moment...there was a Hoenn version, Innocent, being chased down by Wallace's spirit that kept inhabiting different bodies. That would've been a lot easier if Innocent me had any idea how pokemon battling worked. And finally... Firstly, actually. Chronologically, anyway. Self-Aware me was brought to Kanto, where the entire thing was a game wherein players who lost were getting turned into wild pokemon. Mewtwo had designs on letting Gary keep this world while taking over the 'real' one for himself. So you've become champion and defeated evil...five times? Seven. Five regions... Hoenn twice, remember? Also, there was climactic battle with Darkrai, who ate Wallace as a source of power. All of my teams from the other five regions were brought in to help, but in the end, Darkrai pulled me away to a custom-made world where I didn't speak the language. It was insane; I lost more pokemon there than anywhere else.
Lost? Aw, dammit! Sorry. Meh, nevermind. Anyway, yeah. I should tell you that I have a condition called Nuzlocke. You...what?! See, Nuzlocke is where- I know what Nuzlocke is. You're afflicted?! Yeah. That's why my father left us; he thought that if he didn't inspire me to be a trainer, I might not have to suffer through it. Manic...what is Nuzlocke? Simply put, Matty: if one of my pokemon faints, they die instead. WHAT?! You heard me. Are you nuts?! Release me! Take me back to the center and release me! Wouldn't help. Once you've had me as your trainer...
You selfish bastard! How many pokemon have died for you?! Too many... Do you even care?! Dana the Vigoroth. Trevor the Pidgeotto. Tina the Meowth. Creosote the Snorlax. Penelope the Nuzleaf. The Dave the Kadabra. Rex, the Houndoom...twice. Priscilla, Jacob, Tso...the list goes on and on. And yet, you still catch pokemon! You sick sack of- YOU SHUT YOUR FAT GOB THIS VERY MOMENT BEFORE I BURN IT OFF. Erf? This boy is opening his heart to us, and you don't even have the decency- I can't even-
What's your problem? If even a fraction of what he's been telling us is true, he's been dragged through hell and back again, and all you can think to do is tear into him. All I've ever seen you do is tear into him! If he cared one bit about pokemon, he wouldn't even catch them! You're wrong, Fenrir. Oh, yeah? I don't care a bit about the grunts I've beaten, or the gym leaders I've had to trounce. The wild pokemon I've sent packing, or the evil organizations I've taken down. See, I- But I'm haunted - every moment of every day - by the faces of the friends I've sent to die. I hear their voices. I remember their last words. I remember how they died and why, whether it was random, unavoidable chance or my own stupid mistakes. I think about the things I could and should have done.
So...that's why... Yeah. That's why we stop off at the pokemon center any time any of you go below half health. That's why I never fight if someone is poisoned, that's why I would've left if Trina posed a real threat. Because you don't want to lose us. Because I don't want to lose you. Any of you. Even me? I have promises to keep. No one dies on my watch. Not if I can help it. See...every time I've lost someone, I've learned from it. Priscilla died because I didn't use my best pokeball when I should have. Penelope died because I didn't take super-effective attacks seriously enough. Trevor died because I wasn't careful about which pokemon was in front. I can't bring my friends back...but I can honor their memories by using what I learn to become a better trainer. I...don't know what to say. So when I know some things about Kanto that I shouldn't? That's why. I've been through Kanto twice already, once on its own and once adjoining Johto. That's why I knew the Gold Teeth would be there, for example.
This's a heavy load, lad. Yeah. Trouble is, things are different. The water leading East from Fuschia, routes 19 and 20 as desert..it's all different. Brock is supposed to be the first gym leader, not the second-to-last one. I still don't get it. What don't you get? Why do you do this? You know pokemon will die. You know how much you'll suffer for it.
Look at it, Fenrir. What do you see? What am I supposed to be looking for? Straight ahead. Describe it. It's a desert. It's raining. Neither of those things is supposed to be true. The reason my friends can't return home is because the timeline is screwed up. This isn't supposed to be happening. So this is all about them. Not just them, Fenrir. Haven't you been listening? Cassie wants to return to her life in the water. Cutman was brought back for this specific purpose. You...I'm not really sure what you want. I just wanna be liked. My children are out there, somewhere. And I'm just happy to be here by your side, where I can help! He speaks! And here I had you figured for the strong, silent type. Anyway, Fenrir, this is why I do this. This is why I've always done this. I'm the Candlebearer. I shine light into dark places. The League isn't going to fix this; we have to fix this. So you think you're some sort of hero? No, Fenrir. I'm just a confused kid, trying to fix things the only way he knows how. Now, let's get some training done.
Hm. Just wait until you unlock the Electron Blaster. Then I can really help! The what, now? Surge's weapon. What, like the Flame Cannon thing? You already have that? Fantastic! So, 'Johann'. You going to give him your real name? Once he gives me his. This 'Manic' thing is cute, but if we're using codenames, I'll keep this one. Why don't you have one? Because this is my actual name, dummy. I know, I know! It's good to have you back on our team. I'm...sensing a past here. Later for that.
It's a weak attack, boyo. That it be...er, that it is, but it has strategic value. Aye? If someone has a useful item equipped, you can smack it away. If ye say so. You put the water back under me, I'll put me life in your hands.
(After entirely too much grinding...)
Amazing how we're all coming along despite our issues. Issues? You haven't noticed? Even I noticed. Enlighten me. Well, 'Johann' and I have our past, Matty isn't fond of Fenrir, Fenrir isn't fond of anyone...Cassie and Bump are the only ones without a bone to pick. I don't have bones. Cutman, remind me to tell you more about Lana and Lily. Or maybe Trevor and Carver, or Chester and anyone with a sense of smell. Intra-party conflict is not new to me. So it's normal for your teammates to fight like a Zangoose and a Seviper? You have no idea.
All right. It's time we take a look inside to see what's what. Now, if I remember this gym, you just walk counter-clockwise to get past the invisible walls. The what? Oh, right. By the way, watch out for invisible walls. We'll be careful, don't worry. Let's go inside.
That's...different. Either I've gained the ability to see invisible things, or you're full of it. Maybe *ow* nope. Still walled off, just in different places. Mind your step! 'Tis sorcery! That man has an Ivysaur! Exotic. I don't feel well... Thank goodness I brought Pecha berries. I think we're getting closer! Round and round...
Shh! I don't think he sees us. Great, let's get in a surprise attack! Not a chance in hell. I hate to admit it, but I agree with Fenrir. Why not?
Because we were having trouble with Koga's derps. His what? Sorry! I mean his trainers. So? So if we go in there now, Koga will destroy us. We need to leave and train more! Whatever it takes, I'm in!

Update #8: Pollution Solution - vs. Koga
Okay. Here we are. Why are we training here instead of to the south? Two reasons. First of all, with all of the Psychic and Ghost types to the south, Bump and Johann have been having trouble training. I only got Normal attacks... Same here. And Bump is weak to the Psychic attacks. None of you are weak to Flying, so we're safer here. Secondly, the enemies around here are tougher, so you'll level faster.
(And so it was...)
Now I can be even more helpful! Great, you've gone from mostly useless to fairly useless. Watch your mouth! You look very strong, Johann. Thanks! Now if Manic can just get that Electron Blaster... All in due time. Wow...it's been ages since I had a Manectric. Was that one of those other yous? It was, Bump. The original me. Now, guess whose turn it is! Uhhhh...Cassie?
Nope! Uhhh...Matty? It's you, Bump. It's your turn. I'm...I'm big! Aye, lad! Yer a mighty fine bruiser now! I knew you'd do it, Bump! But am I strong?
You certainly are! Now, just a little more training for the others, and we'll get going.
Back to the desert, huh? Sure. You resist Flying, sure...but Fenrir has a field day with these ghosts, and when Cassie evolves, so will she. Avast, matey. Don't you think you're puttin' too much wind behind me sails? Too fast, huh? All right. We'll slow it down a bit. We still need to train, though. Beating chumps with super-effective attacks? Count me in!
(In due time...)
Hey...Fenrir, hold off a second. What? Why? Does this Duskull look a bit...off...to you? Ew, yeah. I'm not biting that. I appreciate that. I remember hearing that professors like finding strangely-colored pokemon for research. I think we can violate our one-catch protocol this one time. Really? Hmmm. Yeah, let's just get Bump in here to put it to sleep, aaaand...
I think the term for these pokemon is 'shiny'. But it isn't shining... Not now, but remember how it gleamed when it first entered combat? Manic, dear, I can't help but notice you're hesitant to go near it. Matty, I've only ever seen a shiny pokemon once before. What does that have to do with- It was shining because it was radioactive. I'll...just stay over here, then. Aaaand off you go to Oak. Good luck! Now, back to training.
(And, eventually...)
Can we go yet?! I'm bored... Now, don't whine. Sorry. It's okay. I think we're about ready; you wouldn't have much problem with Koga's derps now, so we're probably ready for the main event.
Don't bother. You can't sneak up on me. Koga. Or should I say, not-Koga. I know you've defeated...him. You mean- YES...I mean him. I know what name he took. Well, you're right. I shut him down. And now it's your turn.
One victory, and you're sure you can beat me. I'm not a weakling like he was. Never said you were. You look confident, though. As the song goes, I am not afraid of anything in this world. There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard. Then you're a fool. You've never encountered anything like me, I promise you that. Oh? And what makes you so special? You're facing off against Toxic Man now, fool! I'm not just going to kill you, I'm going to make you suffer!
All right then, bring the thunder! Fenrir, you're on point! Thunder? No, you're thinking of- oh, forget it. Here, let's see if you can face a REAL master!
Hah! That's precious. Careful, Fenrir. This guy's no joke. Right you are! Your mongrel is no match for my team. Hmph! How rude. Nice Numel. Shame it doesn't know any Ground attacks! Cocky bastard. I don't need super-effective attacks to take you down. Oh? And what'll you use instead, that runt? WHAT DID YOU CALL ME?! Cool yer heels, matey... Shut up! You, c'mere!
Pecha berries, hmmm? Cute. I knew I'd be fighting someone with Poison-type pokemon, and they're readily available. Why wouldn't I do that? You'd be amazed how many challenges didn't. No I wouldn't. Anyway- Anyway, I'm still pissed off and going to take it out on your living sushi! Fenrir, Cassie is right. Reel it back, or you're going to get hurt!
WHO'S going to get hurt? You are! Or didn't you notice? Urgh...I think I bit into the part of the Qwilfish you're not supposed to eat... Hah! And with no Pecha berry left, you'll have to spend time curing him, time I can spend attacking! Now, let's see if we can have a little ghostly fun, mmm? Fenrir, he has a Haunter coming up next. You're perfect for the task, but I'm not going to make you fight in this condition if you don't want to. That pile of Snorlax crap called me a runt. Nobody calls me a runt! So you want to stay in? Don't you dare take me out! All right, your wish is my command. Bring it on, not-Koga!
Hmph! All right, I admit it, your Mightyena isn't half-bad. And don't you...urgh...forget it... Fenrir. I'm taking you out. Yeah...okay, fine. I've made my point. It's amazing how many types pair well with Poison, you know. Here, try one of the more common ones! Common...Matty, you're up! Of course, my pleasure.
With no Ground attacks, that's only half a pokemon! Listen, Toxic Waste Man or Garbage Man or whatever you're calling yourself. That's Matty, and she may not have Ground attacks... ...but she has Fire attacks. Right. Damn it! Matty, light it up! Waiting on that magic word... Matty. Please light it up. My pleasure!
Laughably weak! Two Embers and she still couldn't win! I'm sorry, I don't know why this isn't working! I do. Want to share with the class? Gloom is an evolved pokemon. Matty isn't. It has higher base stats. What looks like it should be a battle in Matty's favor is a fair fight instead. I'm not...going to give up! I said I'd light it up, and I will, acid or no acid!
Ooooh...Manic, would you mind... Not at all. Thanks for the help, Matty. You did a great job! Thank you very much, but right now, I think I'd better stay out of the fight until I get some healing. Aye, lass. Set back and let ol' Cassie handle things!
All right, no more fooling around. With no secondary typing, you have no chance at a super-effective attack! Damn, he's right. Mud Shot won't do much, and with Ground and Psychic both tied up, he's got no tangible weakness. We don't need super-effective attacks to win. We just need our leader! Johann is right, Cassie. Surf's up, hang...well, hang however many you have! Aye-aye! To Davy Jones' locker with ye!
It's a damned frigate! I should've known; at this stage, single-stage pokemon are going to be overpowering! Cassie, hang back, we need a better battle plan. Heh! How many Pecha berries do you have? Seviper, use Toxic on whatever he brings out! See, now, that's a strategy fail. Oh? Poisoning all of your pokemon seems like a good strategy to me! I'm afraid you'll find that quite impossible. Hah! I've seen your pokemon, you don't have any Steel types! No, I have something better. I've got a Bump. A what?
TA-DAA! Aw, penicillin! Bump, this thing is bothering us and hurting some of our friends. Could you be a pal and quiet it down for me? Uh huh!
Rock-a-bye Seviper, Hiding in the treetops! If the prey moves, Seviper will drop! Manic. I will do pretty much anything you ask if you'll just make him stop! Heh! Okay, okay. I think you've got him, Bump. Now, a couple of Body Slams...
Neat. Oh, fuck. Not neat, not neat! I wish I could do that... Bump, it's a Ground attack. It'll be super-effective against you! Not good. Matty and Bump and Johann and I are all weak to Ground, Cassie is hurt, and Fenrir is poisoned. Your Kabuto has a keen grasp of the situation. What now? Wait. What? Why can you understand him? Never you mind. Make your move, 'hero'! Well, since you asked so nicely...
Are you nuts?! Your Intimidate will work even with this thing underground, and you're still near full HP. You're the most likely to absorb a Dig hit and live. If I don't, I'm coming back to haunt you! Just brace for impact! Incoming! Hang in there, mate!
What?! ...what was that? That was the Dig hit AND your poison damage. That was...kind of hilarious, actually! You shut your mouth! Seviper, get it in gear! Can you hang in there while I use the intervening time to heal a few of the others? You're using a Mightyena to tank for you? You've got some steel ball bearings! In fact...once I'm done, how about putting the finishing touches on this thing? Near-total sweep? Easy. Just point me at your opponent and let me fight!
WHAT. Second gym and you have a Hyper Potion?! Nope! But I just saw- Hyper PotionS. What the hell is wrong with- actually, no, I already know the answer to that. Bump, I need you to get back in here! Okay! I'm okay now.
Owwwww. Quit it! Okay. 30 damage with a crit. Eminently survivable. But it hurts! I don't like it. I know, buddy. But the answer is to hit the Seviper until it stops, okay? I'll give it a body Bump!
No fair! It's okay. Put it to sleep again, okay? Yuh-huh! Rock-a-bye Seviper- Arceus, some of us have ears, you know! Oh yeah? Look around. Okay, so Cutman doesn't. And neither does Cassie...uh. Go on. Bump, no...what, only half the team has ears? I'm just tuning it out! He'll only improve if he gets practice. Cute trick, but I'll make sure you use the intervening turns healing if you can! Give it a good Crunch, Seviper! Owww!
But you've been feeding it Sitrus already... All better! It's not like he needs a Pecha, right? It's like you anticipated - who ARE you? Bump. Finish it off. Yeah!
I'm Manic. I'm no one to be trifled with. If I understand correctly, there are six more of you lot left...not for long.
It's a lot less disturbing when you know it's coming. Toxic Splash, huh... Hey, Bump. Guess what that means. Uhhhh... I'm afraid I'm new to this, too. Ahhh, right. Each of the eight gym leaders are robots, and each one is a receptacle for their associated power. Defeating Koga restored Poison-type attacks. So now you can actually use that Sludge attack you've been hanging on to! Yaaaaay! Right. But first, let's grab that badge and the TM.
And now, a well-deserved breather.

I named Slimcr when my health was so poor that I was half-blind. I couldn't tell the difference between the 'c' and the 'e'. In case you were wondering.

Update #9: Flameout
Cassie, would you care to do the honors? Aye, lad! Don't mind if I do! I can't help feeling like we're forgetting something. Robotic douchebag defeated, check. Safari zone catches Manic's not using (aside from one), check. All stocked up on supplies, ready to go. If we remember later, we can come back.
How come the route's here and not on the other side? Honestly, I haven't the faintest clue. I guess some things never change. A piece of your past? Yeah, sorta. Kanto has really screwed up route barriers in places. Route 2, for example. It still amazes me that you know this place without having actually been here! Except that I was here. Twice, actually. Just not...HERE here. Uhhhh... Er, nevermind. Let's just get going.
Ah, here we are. Trainers to fight, a new catch to be made, and - hey, Bump. Yeah? Grass type. Oh boy, oh boy! Wanna show off your new move? Do I ever! Then go for it, man!
Did you see? Did you see? I did it! Aye, lad. That ye did! Just keep that stuff away from me. It's not the greatest attack type, but at least we have coverage for Erika now. Well, partial coverage, anyway. At any rate- Uh, lads? Cassie?
Avast! It's time fer Cassie Tete to take the helm! I'd forgotten how impressive Crawdaunt look! Cassie Tete? Aye! Not your given name, I'm guessing. Are ye gonna keep flappin' yer jaw, or are we gonna finish what we started? Right, got it.Well, far be it from me to be left in the dust.
Woo, nice! I've never had a Kabutops before! Not the most ringing endorsement. Don't worry, I know you have a double weakness to grass now. Uh... Really, don't worry! I know my pokemon. Gotta keep you away from electricity too. I'm not worried about electricity, just keep me away from Fighting and Ground attacks! Why, wha-
Hubbawha?! Manic, I think it's time I come clean with you. Honesty is the best policy. I wasn't so much brought back from a fossil as, uh...reconstructed. From...? Scrap metal. Wait, wait. You mean- Paint me pink and call me a Granbull...you're robotic too! Nay, lad, can't be! Is it true? I'm afraid so. I fought on the wrong side of a battle some time ago, and was destroyed. It wasn't my fault, though; I had been reprogrammed. So, when Doc Oak found my CPU intact, he decided to give me a second chance. You're a bad guy? Not anymore, and I never wanted to be. Now I'm here to help Manic, and he needs it in more ways than he knows. This is a lot to absorb, Cutman. Let's keep walking while I sort this out.
Fenrir, get back! It's a Koffing. It's literally a ball of gas. I don't care. Let Cutman fight it! He's immune to poison, and...other things it might do. Other things? Manic, what are you trying to tell us? A Koffing controlled by a Rocket team member was what killed Trevor. Of course! Selfdestruct. And I have double resistance to Normal moves. Exactly. Cutman, take the wheel.
O...kay? u agree, lol? Er, I dunno. Name for what? fak u Uh. You wanna rephrase that, kid? no
So you're Ethan. lol ya And you're, uh, Pokepizza? yea They're silly. That they are, bucko. Let's show 'em we're serious!
ur duskul sux ur duck is gay HEY! Eyes on the fight! fuk u C'mon, let's finish this up. You can't hope to beat me. y Because my pokemon have something yours don't. o rly? Cassie, the Duskull. Bump, the Psyduck. Aye aye! Okay!
I like to call it 'teamwork'. we lost cuz ur gay ur the gay one fagit You know, as long as you keep blaming each other, you're never going to get any better. fuk off ya heres ur money ur pokmon r gay I wish I could say it's been a pleasure. Now, GTFO, noobs- OW! What the hell?! Are you all right? Yeah, I went to put their cash in my pocket and something...bit...aw, HELL.
It takes a real pal to abandon their safari and rush these teeth back to me! Aheh, yeah. Manic... Look, uh, I've gotta be honest with you. I totally forgot about the teeth for a while. I've had them for about a day now. An entire day?! You're lucky we returned them at all! Yeah. Sorry about that, my bad. Sonny, gold is one heavy metal! If you lugged these chompers around all day and just forgot, I reckon you hardly even need this...but here you go!
Sweet, thanks! Strength, right? Huh? The HM. It's for Strength, right? Damned if I know! Really? Can't get the drive to read it! Somethin' about a scratched disk. Have a look!
Uhhhhhhh. What's it say? Well, 75 power... Not bad, not bad at all. 255% accuracy... Excuse me? That's what it says! And get this: 100 PP. Let me get a good look- for the love of Arceus, he's not kidding! I don't even know what this type symbol means! Good luck getting it working! Maybe you can take it to one of those newfangled resurfacing places. So, who gets the glitched move that will probably erase their brain? Me, I'll take it!You're sure about this? I need a good attack, and a 75-power typeless attack with 100 PP that never misses sounds good to me!
Johann? You okay, buddy? WOW! I still want to test it in battle, but if this really works...! Well, at least you're not insane or anything. And you don't mind wielding Strength? My job is to help you in any way I can, and this should be super-useful! Huh. If you don't mind, I don't mind!
Hnnnngh... Johann. It's okay...I can get it...! No, you can't. Not yet. I don't understand! I should be able to move this thing! We don't have the badge that powers up the move yet. It's okay. We'll come back. If you say so.
Slim pickings for TMs. But not for trainers! Oh, fantastic. A double battle. And against a Hitmonlee and a Hitmonchan, yet! Matilda, I want you nuking their attack every round. Johann, time to take your new move out for a spin. Mya! You heard him! I sure did, Ron. Take out that Numel! Not if I have anything to say about it! Damn, my Hitmonchan is down! Ron, it's up to you now! Er, Matty, you're looking a little beaten down. Maybe I should switch you. Manic. What are the odds that every attack would focus on me, they would survive Johann's powerful new move, and that Hitmonlee would score a critical hit on the last move?
*CRACK* Oh...I suppose that's...about 1:1... MATTY! What's wrong, kid? Just use a Revive on her. Shut up! Matty, come on! You can shrug that off! I'm sorry, Manic. I don't think...I can. Lass... I'm sorry! I'm sorry, I tried, I couldn't stop it in time, I'm sorry! Fenrir...come here...not much time left. What...what is it? This was no one's fault...but my own. Pay attention to what's...to come...this is what...it is...to...
Matty, no...no, no, Matty, no... You heard them! Use a Revive on her! Fenrir, it won't work. I don't care! Do it anyway! Fenrir, I- I SWEAR TO ARCEUS, YOU'RE GOING TO AT LEAST TRY, OR I'LL RIP YOUR THROAT OUT! Is this what it is to be what I am...always surrounded by death? There...see, I've given her the Revive. Now get up!...get up, damn it! Nay, lad. She's not - she can't be- Fenrir. I'm sorry. She's...she's gone. You- Bump, I- You hurt Matty! Bump, be careful! You hurt Matty! Matty was nice and you took her away and now she's gone!
I HATE YOU! Oh Arceus - Ron. I think... Mya. I think his p-pokemon is d-d- Go away. Kid, I'm sorry, we're sorry, we didn't mean - we're not pokemon killers- I know you didn't mean to and I know you didn't know but GO AWAY! Mya, I think we should leave. Now! Y-yeah, r-right.
Matilda. Matty. I'm...I'm so sorry... I think it's safe to say no one blames you, Manic. Aye. 'Tis always a tragedy when you lose a member of the crew, but she fought hard an' died well. Well, I blame you. Hey! Not cool! I don't care if it's 'cool'! If he hadn't dragged her along, Matty would still be alive! That's enough, Fenrir! You're not the only evolved 'mon on the team any more, don't make me shut you up! Leave him be, Cutman. But- Okay, then look me in the eyes and tell me that she wouldn't have been safer burning lower-level pokemon. Well...I... Yeah. At least you respect me enough to be honest. It's not fair. It's not fair! I know, buddy. C'mere. WAAAAHHH-hh-hh-hhh-*hic* You're right. It's not fair. None of this is fair. I have a new mission now, before anything else. Y-you do? *snf*
Yeah. We're going to get her to Lavender Town, get her a proper resting place. Then that leaves the question- Just like that, huh? Next in line? I...I can't. Cap'n? Look, I'm sorry. I just...I can't put someone in her spot. I'm sorry. I'm just...not ready yet. Are you okay? No. I'm really not. Look, do you think you can get us to Lavender, the five of you? I'll try. For her, not for you. Let's set sail. *snf* Okay... Yeah. Yeah, we'll make it happen. Thanks for understanding. I know we're weaker with only five, but- Say no more, lad. Let's be off.
Oh, hey. A grass type. Yeah. That could be useful against Misty. I don't want a grass type. I want Matty! Bump, listen-We all do, Bump. We all do. I'm really, truly sorry, but we have to press on. It's not fair. I know. I'm sorry.
Hey, team. What do you want? Do you think I could have a minute to myself? Are you mad at us? No, no. I just need a little time to think. Everybody okay with that? Aye, lad. Take all th' time ye need. We'll be below decks. I think we could all use the same, actually. Thanks. I'll call you back out soon, I promise. *pchoo x5*
If you close your eyes, Does it almost feel like Nothing's changed at all?
If you close your eyes, Does it almost feel like You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this? How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Dammit. I would've liked a little more time. *pchoo x5* Feeling better? Not really, no. Fenrir, I can't use you, you'll one-shot it. Bump, you'll be weak to its Psychic attacks. Okay. That leaves Johann, Cutman, Cassie, and M-...and Cassie. All's well, lad. I've got it. And now I've got it. ... C'mon, let's go. Lots more route to cover.
You. It almost looks normal out here. I'm not sure I trust it. Oh, hey! It's one of Doc's healbots!Doc's what now? Healbots! You know, they restore lost energy? Hm. I guess we could all use a refresher. Cassie? Settin' course!
Where the hell is Lavender Town?! Not too much farther. Getting tired already? No! Besides, we're getting to Lavender, that's not up for discussion. It's the least we can do. But... But nothing! Always thought you didn't like her. I didn't! She was a busybody! So what? We owe her, and we're going to make sure she's taken care of! I'm confused. C'mon, Bump. It's okay. Let's let him be. Besides, he's right. We're going to make sure Matty has a nice send-off.
Well. Quick jaunt? Makes sense to me. And the bush? Cutting is my specialty! Do you have the HM for it? Well...no. Surfing it is, then.
Cutman, check me. Am I missing something here? Check you? Yeah. You know, reality check me. The bush. Is there any reason for it to be there? Maybe it grew there naturally. Too convenient. If you mean strategically, then no. Right, then. Just making sure. Come on, let's stop for a quick break.
Huh? Thanks, mister. No problem. You look like you need a distraction. Don't take this the wrong way, but that's the last thing I need. Tsk! Take it with my blessing. Whatever's bothering you, share it with the sea. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks.
This route is a lot tougher to navigate when you can't Surf. Can't Surf? How would you- The Snorlax, wake with a pokeflute. The items, use Cut. What's a pokeflute? It's a musical instrument. Wakes up sleeping pokemon. But I put them to sleep. And you do a good job of it. It's okay, Bump. As long as we have it, we don't need to worry about it.
And here we are. Lavender Town should be just past this gate.
