Dawn is not someone you want to accuse of missing.
And hey, welcome Vanessa to the team! Look, a character, not a caricature!
And for those of you who were wondering about the riddle from Alder (if any of you were), the most learned gym leader in Unova and the most mysterious Flygon working as a team have solved it!

Update #31: Point of No Return - vs. Kyurem, Grimsley
Well, here we are, top of Victory Road. It seemed bigger last time. We were fifteen levels lower last time, Victor. Fair enough. Mmmm, nice place to bring a romantic date, don't you think, Manic? I used to be a dude. I...you're...um. Oh. I see. Full tilt into a brick wall. That's Manic for you. Hey, do you see something down there?
How did we miss this before? I'm afraid I haven't a clue. Right, right. You joined us right after all this. I keep forgetting. I remember us running at full speed through this place. The conflict with N seems a lifetime away, does it not? Time makes fools of us all. Now, let's see if we can do it right this time...
Okay, guys. This is the big one. Looks like solid rock, too. I'll take it down. Nnnnnope. If the pattern holds, this thing is part Fighting type, too. That lets you and Arthur both out. Discretion is valor's poorer cousin, but I shall adhere to your wishes, milady. Can I take a whack at it? Rock, Fighting...sure, don't see why not.
Shaved Bouffalant. Beg your pardon? I look at this thing, and that's all I can think. It's also the right general level. This is embarrassing. Can I dust this Terrakion whatsis? Yeah, go for it. One Leaf Storm, coming up!
Wow. So, uh, these were...legendary pokemon, then. I am underwhelmed. Suppose we had challenged them when the opportunity first arose, though. Well, yeah, sure. Maybe then things might have gone differently, but now? That was just sad. That just leaves us two things to do: Kyurem, and the E4. But first... First? SHOPPING! Shopping! Shopping! Shopping!
So first she sells things, then she buys things? It would appear so. In the middle of a crisis? And it takes twice as long. It would appear so. Guess who's going to carry all this stuff? Offhand, I'd say the only one of us with proper arms. Delightful.
(Later, at the batcave Giant Chasm...)
I don't like it out here. Bad visibility means bad times. Yeah, but at least we know the way now. Aw, don't worry about it. You can stick close to me. Riiiiight! Right. Uh, I think I'd better stick with Manic. Don't want her to get caught unprepared! Tsk. Your loss. Shhh! I think I just saw that dark grass rustle. It's time for our capture, team!
Milady, far be it from me to question the wisdom of your actions... I know what you're going to ask. I took a good, long look at both of them, then thought of who on the team I'd swap out for either one. Neither one was good enough to replace any of us, huh? Bingo. Now, let's see about having a little fun with Kyurem, shall we? After we train a bit, I mean.
(insert level-up sound effects here)
Okay, team. This time we know what to look for. The instant this place flash-freezes, run north! Don't have to tell me twice! And there it goes! Prometheus, help Vanessa! Arthur, help Calima! Everyone else clear a path, let's get in there!
I don't feel entirely comfortable with this. Trust me, Prometheus. You're tough enough to withstand whatever this thing dishes out. You're not saying you want me to go out there, do you? Well, no, but- With my quadruple weakness to ice, I'd be a goner! You don't want that, do you? Of course not! Then get in there and show that overgrown Kecleon what you've got! Fine, I will! Oh, you're good. Stick with me, honey. I'll show you how this works.
Nnnngh...Kyurem's power is intense...just being around it is oppressive! You won't be having to worry about that for the first few turns. Care to explain? Pressure only works on moves that target Kyurem. You'll be doing that all of one time. Er, all right. And in the meantime, what do I do?
You dance, Prometheus. You dance like you mean it!
You know this boogie is for reeeeeeeal.... Milady, is this the time for such things?! This is the best time for such things, Arthur. Just enjoy it! I used to buy my faith in worship, But then my chance to Heaven slipped. I used to worry about the future But then I threw my caution to the wind.
I had no reason to be carefree No no no, until I took a trip to the other side of town Yeah yeah yeah, you know I heard that boogie rhythm Hey- I had no choice but to get down, down, down, down!
Dance! Nothing left for me to do but dance, Off these bad times I'm going through! Just dance! Got canned heat in my heals tonight, baby! I don't get it! I have no idea how, but he's weathering its assault! That's 'cause Manic knows what she's doing!More importantly, it has a great deal to do with the fact that she's enjoying it!

[/div]
Only the wind can blow the answer, And she cries to me when I'm asleep. She says "you know that you can go much faster," I know that peoples' talk can be so cheap. Prometheus! It's stuck on physical attacks now! That's why you gave him an X-Defend, isn't it? Yeah! Now give it one good Flamethrower in the face!
I got this voodoo child inveined on me, I'm gonna use my power to ascend! You know I got these running heels to use, Sometimes there's no way I lose! I was born to rock, and built to last, You never see my feet cause they move so fast! YEAH! Okay, I admit it! That was way better than the 'suck my dick' song. Exhilirating! I don't even... Baby, you are hot! You're on fire! You don't think...phew...the spin at the end...was too much? Are you kidding? That made the performance. You were magnificent. Well done! All right, team. That was pretty awesome, but we've got a lot more training to do before we're ready for the E4. Pretty sure they won't be rocking Imprison or Endeavor.
(And so, training occurred. And more training. And even more training! Plus, y'know, every rare candy in inventory.)
Okay, team. Srsface time. We're all ears. Well, those of us who have 'em. Somewhere behind this door is Alder. The Elite Four is holding him hostage. I have no idea what their pokemon are like, but it's a safe bet they're the toughest Unova has to offer. Nobody else seems to know about Alder's situation, and I plan to keep it that way. Why? Why don't we just call the authorities? In the absence of the champion, the Elite Four are the authorities. Calima's right. If this is gonna play out right, it's up to us. Dibs on the dark guy. Grimsley? You're sure? Bet he's not packing any Fighting moves. What if he has a Scrafty too? Then switch me out. What, do I have to hold your hand? Heh...I can't say no to you. At least, you'd better not.
GRIMSLEY! I know you're in here! Hey, check it out. Moving walkway! Could be a trap. It also appears to be the only way up. I can't carry all of you at once, and I don't trust this situation enough to take one at a time. We're heading up. There's no way around it.
Grimsley. Ah, yes. Manic, is it? Wonderful, wonderful. Come here, let me have a look at you. Fear not, milady. I am at your side. You've blossomed into quite the lovely young woman, haven't you? You're a regular comedian. And yet...not truly Manic, I understand.
You were given quite the tool indeed. The memories of the esteemed Manic. Are you responsible for my being brought here to Unova? Certainly not. In fact, none of us are; that's as much a mystery to us as it is to you. In fact, all of this would have worked out much better if you had simply stayed gone. I see. And what's your role in all this? It's really quite simple, my dear. Someone had to orchestrate this scheme. Someone had to create the plot, as it were; a roaming champion mourning his losses, drowning his sorrows with the rabble. A war criminal from another region responsible for the woes of Unova. And us, the Elite Four, dutifully maintaining Unova's affairs while that useless sot wandered around reminiscing about the days when he was relevant. Hey, ass-breath! Alder's ten times the man you'll ever be! Yes, yes, I've heard it all before. You're hardly the first to come knocking. Although I will admit you are the best thus far. This will be entertaining. I don't like the sounds of this. What are your intentions?
Isn't it obvious? Knowing what you know, none of you can leave this place alive. If only one of us gets to leave this room, I guarantee it's gonna be me. Dawn, you're up!
...Dawn? What? It's a Sharpedo. I know Bullet Seed. This isn't brain surgery. Trouble in paradise? Hardly. I joined up with Manic to put an end to people like you. Let's see what my Scrafty has to say about that. That's your cue.
Ah, your recovered friend from the distant past, I see. The desert sands whisper your doom, Grimsley. But for those of us who know how to listen, who have studied the means to echo that whisper...
...it is as a deafening roar! Hmph. You have your own Scrafty, don't you? Surely you know that won't be enough alone. It doesn't have to be. See, Calima did a lot more for me than just boost my spirits.
...she also became a pretty fantastic means of transportation. Two down, four to go. Don't get too confident, now. The best is yet to come. Tell me, have you ever seen a Krookodile? Evolution of Krokorok? Then you do know its awesome power. Educated guess. Victor? Just aim me at the bad guys!
Tsk, tsk. Such a pity. Are you afraid, little snake? What are you, sick in the head or something? Of course I'm afraid. It's a huge fuckin' Krookodile! But there's one thing you don't know about me. And what is that? Just how Rash I can be! ...oh dear.
Eat Leaf Storm, you douche! Half your team's down, Grimsley. What've you got now? I'm tired of toying with you, girl. It's time for my Bisharp, my ace in the deck! Rrrrgh. Calima's still hurt, and I don't trust this thing not to have a Rock attack... Don't worry your pretty little head. I've got this. Well, if you say so. Go for it, Vanessa!
Nearly equal in level, mmm? Not bad. I like a challenge. Do you think you can defeat my Bisharp in a single stroke? Actually? Yes. Confident! Try, then. Oh, not yet. Give me a moment, hmmm? A girl's got to get prepared.
Ahhh, there we are. Nothing like a few Swords Dances to make a girl feel alive. Was the pole really necessary? Listen, buster. I don't come to your house and slap the dick out of your mouth. Don't tell me how to do my business. DAMN. I...well, I've never...that's quite, uh... HA! You tell 'em! Manic? I got a little hurt in the process. Would you be so kind? Oh? Yeah, sure, here you go.
Ahhh, much better. Thank you! o/~ Are you done being a tramp all over my room? WHAT. Uh oh. What did you just call me?! Oh, that was not smart. Take shelter, everyone!
Now you listen to me, you no-account, Staravia-haired Machiavelli wannabe, making plans up here for nobody to care about, kidnapping people and acting behind the scenes like you'd burst into sparkles if the sun ever hit that prettyboy face of yours! What?! How DARE- I'M NOT FINISHED!
And don't try to hide behind your cat, either! Where was I? Prettyboy. Right! Don't think for a second that you can prance around this region calling me a tramp while you're slutting it up with anything with two, four, eight, or no legs! Damn Pugsley lookalike with your skinny ass and your red velvet carpet! Have you ever even touched a woman that wasn't clenching to get you out?! I... Damn, girl. I don't know when she learned Rage, but it seems super-effective!
Maybe you should start! I'm about to rip through your scorpion friend there - a pale imitation of yours truly, with typing that shows it - and teach you some respect! I'd cram my stinger so far up your butt I'd spear your brain, but you look like you're used to it! I bet your pants have a zipper on the ass! Uhm. Can we...just end this? Vanessa? What?! I think he's wet himself. Can we administer the coup de grace?
Oh. Right. Phew! Sorry you had to see that, boys. If you can sit through my dancing, I can sit through that. That was fucking HOT. Damn! I...you... Mmm. Two out of three ain't bad. You'll get over it, tough guy.
But that...that was definitely a bad way to lose. Oh, hey, just so you know? Hmmm? We're sealing the door as we leave. Don't want you running off before the authorities arrive. Heh heh heh...stupid girl. Wow, some guys just never learn. You have no idea what you're dealing with. I was the only thing holding two of the others in check. Now you're in for hell on earth. Go challenge them! I have closed-captioned TV in here, I'll be fine. This should be hilarious.

Update #32: Strife! - vs. Marshall, Shauntal
It's time to deal with Marshall. I remember Alder speaking none-too-fondly about him. It seems he was not without due cause. Great. A gym full of fighting types. Arthur and I are both out. Yeah, and this guy is probably packing Rock attacks all day. Prometheus, you need to hang back too. Works for me! Leaving me, Vanessa, and Victor to do the deed. Actually, I have a plan. I'd like Vanessa to solo this one. What? Why? I have a theory. If I'm right, I may have a new tactic for her to use. Don't fret for me, I know a sucker when I see one.
Do you understand what that means? Yeah, but why don't you tell me what you think? It means I crush anyone who opposes me, plain and simple. I've had my men watching you, Manic; using you to get rid of N and Ghetsis was a master stroke, but now you've become a thorn in our side. Your 'men'? Mmmn. Police chief Marshall, to you. Everywhere you've gone, you've been watched. Even when you had that disgusting bout of weakness. You mean when Jonas died. I assume that's your Excadrill. Yeah. That's how the world works, Manic; the weak die, the strong prosper. It's just that simple. I'm strong, so I win. You're weak, so you lose. Think so? I bet I can solo you with just one of my pokemon. Level? 75. Oh, you're on.
Guess I was more tired than I thought...g'night. Vanessa, now is not the time! Here, take an Awakening! Whew! Better than coffee! Okay, what's - OW, you creep! Here, hang on a second, let me give you something to help out.
Healing and X items are a patch, nothing more. Beg your pardon? They're a way to make up for deficiencies! What the hell is he talking about? He's ignoring the fact that a good fighter prepares for the long haul. Now, care to end this guy? It'd be my pleasure.
Damn it! Heh heh...not bad, you saw through my psychological warfare. Oh, you mean the hypocrisy? That's exactly what I mean. You wouldn't believe how many trainers hear that junk and suddenly stop healing their pokemon. Yeah, well, I'm no ordinary trainer. I've had people messing around in my head this entire time. You don't even rank. No problem, I've always preferred a direct approach. Well, you don't mind if Vanessa limbers up first, do you?
I don't care if he minds or not, I'm doing it. Well, that was, uh...disturbing. The hell? Keep it under control, Vanessa. Let's do this one by the book. Hmph. You're the boss.
Ugh, that rotten little...why did you have me use Night Slash? Insult to injury. You finished his Sawk off with a NVE move. I bet he finishes his Sawk off every night with Soak. Really? I'm disappointed in you. Hey, I'm bored, okay? At least I got to fight Grimsley. Don't worry. This won't last much longer. Overconfident, hmmm? Let's see if I can help you see the light.
My Conkeldurr! What the hell?! Hey, Marshall. Quick question. Hmmm? Do any of your pokemon know ice or water attacks? Of course not. Mmm-hmmm. And do any of them have Sturdy apart from your Sawk? No, why? Oh my. Hee hee. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? I'd bet good money on it. Go for it!
Ffff...what is this?! This is me calling you out for holding Unova under your thumb! You can't do this to me, I'm the police chief! Not for much longer, tough guy. You say you want to destroy all weakness in yourself, but you're nothing but one big weakness. Destroy that and there's nothing left of you!
Awww. Hmmm? Now I feel bad. Look at it. It's scared! Given the circumstances, understandably so. Aw, c'mon. Not my last pokemon! Milady...we do not have the luxury of leaving him with even one. Yeah...I know. Sorry, Vanessa. Tsk...c'mere, sweetie. I'll try to make this quick.
Poor thing. Get your weak ass up! *kick!* Hey! Douchebag! He didn't want to fight in the first place, what the hell is wrong with you? I will not tolerate weakness on my team! Well, he's not on your team anymore. He's not on any team anymore. Hell, you don't even have a team now. Let's get out of here and barricade this place. He makes me sick.
Shauntal and Caitlin will make mincemeat of you! Looking forward to it!
Shauntal. Okay, let's review. Ghost-type user. This can actually work to our benefit. Mmn. I'll be immune, and Arthur here will resist. That, and ghost attacks aren't super-effective against anyone on the team...but several of you are packing Dark attacks. Actually, though...I'd like to give Calima a chance at her. I had hoped you'd say that. Arthur, may I borrow those? Of course, madame. At your service!
Not that it mattered. By then, our organization was all but disintegrated. What are you on about? Hmmm. I see you didn't do your research. As it so happens, research is my specialty. Oh, is it, then? And did you learn anything about me? I learned that you're an immigrant from Sinnoh, but not much else. It's true. I was part of a team there, but they were incompetent. Even our leader was an insane nihilist. It's SO much more fun to use my knowledge of plot conventions when I'm part of the establishment and not just some criminal. I see. So you're a crook. Something like that. My name is Shauntal, but they called me "Jupiter". There was a "Mars" and other such drivel, too. Yeah, well, we're here to stomp a mudhole in Uranus!
How quaint...but you're due for a fall. The hero never gets it right on the first try, after all! You think so, huh? Calima, show her Cofagrigus who's the tough one around here! Without hesitation...huh? What's the meaning of this?
"As the heavy bandages bore the Flygon to the ground, they began to wrap tightly around her, cutting off the flow of blood to her extremities. She knew it would be only a matter of time until the end, her thrashing availing her not one bit." Manic...help me, these binds are tightening while she writes! What the hell?! "In mere moments, the Flygon began to feel woozy, consciousness starting to drain from her thoughts. Soon, she would be no more." Do...something... Give me a pen and paper! I can write circles around you! Oh, really? Let's see what you've got.
"Though the burden was heavy and her bonds were tight, the fire of determination flared brightly in Calima's eyes. For all that she had been through, there was no chance that she was going to allow herself to be brought low by a few strips of fabric! Mustering her strength, she shredded the cloth - not enough to free herself altogether, but enough to permit motion - and delivered a devastating attack to the being that had struggled to suffocate her, sending it to the very fate intended for her!" Hmph. I've written better text in my sleep! Really? Well, why not show me what you've got, then? I must admit, this is certainly something new. Her power is undeniably potent. Never did I expect this to be a battle of literature! Ghosts, books...all of it makes for a shaky environment. I don't like it.
"Fully cognizant of the temporarily victorious Flygon's weakness to ice attacks, the heroine sent forth a powerful Froslass. The ice ghost glared balefully at the dragon, preparing its deadliest assault in an attempt to wipe out the foul creature in one fell stroke." "Manic understood all too well that her foe was dangerous, and likely to have something up her sleeve to handle the likes of Calima. Calling the warrior scholar back, she instead sent forth her stalwart knight, confident in his ability to send the frost spirit back to the hell that spawned her."
"The courageous ghost stood fast between the false knight and her trainer, summoning up the chillest of winds to send her opponent packing. So intense was the chill, so powerful the cold that the Scrafty instantly found itself encased within a block of ice, utterly unable to move!" "Only a fool would have come unprepared for the eventuality of status conditions, and the monster's chill ice attack was met with swift action by Sir Arthur's trainer. A Full Restore almost instantly had him back on his feet and ready to fight, and - though the villainess was similarly given an opportunity to heal her creature - the knowledge that the battle had only just begun bore him through his struggles."
Rrrrgh... "Over and over again, the powerful ice pokemon pummeled the evil dark type with punishing ice attacks, chilling him to the bone and driving hope from his thoughts as she demonstrated her superiority, his fighting attacks useless thanks to her secondary typing!" "...but Sir Arthur knew all too well that his fighting attacks would be of no use in this battle, and he came well-prepared for the eventuality. Despite having loaned his BlackGlasses to his comrade, the strength of purpose bolstered his power, bringing both pokemon to the only possible conclusion: the ice pokemon crumpled to the ground, unable to weather the steady assault, while Sir Arthur enjoyed the boost in attack power that victory would bring." You...are not a better writer...than me! "Sensing that the false knight's attack power had grown, the heroine sent out her Golurk, preparing to match its strength against the bloodlust-fueled creature in a match for the ages!" Stephanie Meyer called, she wants her rough draft back. "Of course, Manic had since determined the standard operation for the criminal misfit, and her mind summoned up a new strategy for dealing with the ghastly construct. This demanded the attention of Victor, her stalwart and skillful companion, the Serperior who had accompanied her through thick and thin. He would surely be able to resolve this battle in short order!" Hah! You hear that? I'm stalwart and skillful! Don't let it go to your head, honey.
Oh, look at that. Victor is faster. What a surprise! "With lightning speed, Victor summoned the full force of his grass affinity, blasting the Golurk with a veritable shower of razor-sharp leaves. The criminal had made one critical mistake: she had ignored the Ground typing of her pokemon, and Victor had made her pay for her error with her pokemon's warped unlife, though at the expense of his own special attack." Hey, you can't write this thing alone! It's my turn! Well, what are you waiting for, then? "Staring down the venomous viper that had dispatched her courageous ally, Shauntal whispered a word of gratitude for his sacrifice before righteous vengeance welled up inside her. The serpent would pay for his treachery with its life, she swore, even as she sent out her most powerful pokemon to reduce the grass type to dust in the wind!" "But again, the supposed expert had misplayed her hand, lending further credence to Manic's theory that Shauntal's position on the Elite Four was due more to chicanery than skill. Fully expecting her opponent to seek a type advantage, Manic again sent Sir Arthur out to do battle, his Crunch attack at the ready."
Heh heh, I've got you now! "Grinning with delight, Shauntal discovered that Manic had finally made a mistake of her own in failing to account for her Chandelure's overwhelming special attack. A scorching blast of fire sent the rogue knight to his knees; even if Manic were to heal him, Shauntal knew that she would be only one critical hit away from dispatching the foul being!" Arthur! Milady...perhaps a tactical retreat...? "Hearing the words wheezed by her badly wounded ally, Manic knew that she could do nothing short of withdraw him from battle. Certainly, a mistake had been made, but the situation was far from the grim prospect believed by the not-so-elite opponent. For the first time since entering the Pokemon League, Manic brought out Prometheus, the Oracle of Life and Change...and with that, Shauntal's chances of victory withered and died on the stalk."
"Shauntal's gleeful grin grew wider than ever at seeing that her opponent's strategy had faltered. A Bug/Fire type would have no particular resistance to Fire attacks, and - as proven by the wave of heat that enveloped the battlefield as another Fire Blast wreathed the foul insect in flames - Manic once again found herself one critical hit away from losing a pokemon. Nnnngh...I refuse to believe this is how my story ends...! All right. Need to stop and think. This thing likes fire. Fire...fire...not Victor...maybe Dawn...no! Damn. "Inwardly, Manic facepalmed at her mistake; Prometheus had the highest special defense on the team, but he had no particular resistance to fire, and cutting damage in half would be the key to winning this battle. Drawing him back from his debut, she sent out the very ally who had begun this match, and the one who would almost surely seal the victory."
"Though the vile dragon was indeed resistant to fire, the Chandelure had other tricks up its myriad 'sleeves'. It took the opportunity to blast the bast with a Shadow Ball, badly wounding the Flygon and preparing for another such blast to relieve the world of the burden it bore." "...but Manic was not without her resources. Indeed, this day had been a long time coming, and there was no doubt in her mind that she would require assistance; Shauntal might not have been very clever, but she did indeed have powerful pokemon. A quick combination of an X-SpDef and Hyper Potion not only brought Calima back up to a combat-worthy state, but offered a distinct advantage against further assaults. So effective was the idea that it was done twice over, vastly reducing Shauntal's chances of victory." Nice. What now, creepy ghost lady? Ugh, if I just had one pokemon that knew Roar... None of your pokemon can force mine out. So noted! Augh!
"With victory almost assured, time was taken to heal other injured members of the group, who had fought so valiantly to bring the Elite Four to their knees and end the plague that ravaged the region. All health was restored to the group, while an eye was kept on Calima's health all the while; with such room to maneuver, the match quickly began to slip through Shauntal's fingers." No...this is my story, I won't let you run off with it! Put it on paper or quit your crying! "The Chandelure...without..." Augh, I can't think of anything plausible! Then allow me.
"With Calima's special defense stat boosted twice over and all of Shauntal's efforts focused on that one area, there was precious little that the ghost writer could do against the wise dragon's overwhelming power. One by one, her pokemon began to fall before Manic, each loss bringing the villainess that much closer to defeat."
The one in which I make my stunning comeback! "Beaten but not broken, Shauntal summoned the last of her will and brought herself back to the combat in full force. Her Drifblim prepared to make its final stand against the vile intruders that threatened the sanctity of the Elite Four, bravely placing itself in harm's way in order to give the heroine an opportunity to enact her brilliant escape plan!" "Fortunately for Manic, the cowardly 'leader' had made her sacrifice in vain, having forgotten that - while one pokemon fought - five were free to guard all possible exits and restrict Shauntal's movements. Without any hope of escape, the lover of the dead was forced to watch as the TRUE heroine of the story enacted the same battle plan that had brought victory so many times before, with the same results-
...and brought the match to its conclusion." I don't understand. This was my story! This was my path to illustrate! How could you steal that from me? How dare you?! Your writing is horrible. You leave enormous plot holes that are just begging to be exploited. Your moral judgments are forced and lacking in conviction, your characterization is shallow and lacking in spirit, and your tactics are predictable. Face it: you lost the moment you picked up a pen.
Beating only some of us is the same as beating none of us, and I know for a fact that you haven't faced Caitlin yet. My ghosts are super-effective against her, and I still wouldn't want to face her down! Now, you go have fun, I'll start writing your epitaph.

Marshall is such a spud. Guy really doesn't have a good answer to a reasonably prepared Gliscor, and as an enforcer, he stinks out loud.
Shauntal, though, she's an actual challenge. Behold, the power of narration!
And I'm not gonna lie...the reveal that Shauntal was Fatal Platinum's Jupiter was a proud moment, but the 'stomp a mudhole in Uranus' moment is something of which I'm equally proud. XD

Shauntal's ability to write narrative into reality made for a very compelling battle scene, but I can't help but wonder how she learned this power - and if there are others out there who might be doing similar things in other regions.

Update #33: Culprit - vs. Caitlin
Here you go, Arthur. I think you might need these. 'Need' may be a strong word, milady. Yeah, won't you be super-effective against everything? And immune to psychic attacks? That's no guarantee. Remember, she's likely to have a variety of other attacks as well. Maybe I should help out? The thought has occurred to me, but let's see how things pan out with Arthur. You don't actually have a resistance to Psychic attacks, and I expect that to be her bread-and-butter.
Well, that's fair. Do you see it, Manic? Barely. She's crafty, nice setup. What are you talking about? It's an optical illusion. There's a ramp. See how it curves off there to the left? Sorry, I don't! Here, let's just climb. You'll see. There it is. Yeah, pretty slick. Even more reason not to take her lightly.
Oh, I'm sorry. Did I wake you? *yawn* Honestly, it's getting so a girl can't even make a man murder his wife in peace. Charming. Well, we know where her priorities are. Hello, Manic. And...let's see now. Victor, Arthur, Prometheus, Dawn, Calima, and Vanessa. You know us, then. Good, glad to hear we can skip the intro. Know you? My dear girl, I've been influencing at least half of your journey. Ooookay. Apart from the obvious scheming, how? Oh, of course. How discourteous of me. Perhaps you recall this voice somewhat better.
... I...I know that voice. It keeps haunting my dreams. That's... Very much so! Ah, Victor was always one of the more clever of your pokemon. It's really quite simple: Archeops and Excadrill are two very powerful Unovan pokemon. All I need to do is take a little nap, and I can project my mind onto someone with a weak will! Harlot! You murdered my comrades to cripple our team! Of course! Not that it seems to have done much good. You've run roughshod over the others. At least that poor fool I dragged over from Sinnoh put up a fight, but even she was no match for you, was she? Miserable bitch, I'm going to ruin you! Oh, come now. In front of your true love? I...you...what? Tsk. I'm one of the most powerful psychic minds in any region. Did you think I wouldn't know? Shut your fat whore mouth!
Oh, I think not. Let's see here. Victor, you love Manic with all your heart, and wish you had been born human. Prometheus, your heart is heavy with all the things you know are yet to come, not just with this Manic, but with all Manics - your mind is fascinating - and you wish you weren't so burdened. Cut your shit, woman! Oh, not even close! Dawn, your insecurity about your appearance makes you act extra-tough, because you're afraid people will see you as a cute, fluffy toy. Calima, you silently long for the oblivion of the dream world, and resent Manic dragging you into yet another life-or-death struggle. Another fascinating mind; I'll simply have to rummage through your thoughts before you die! Vanessa, you're just a simple case of low self-esteem, desperately flailing for approval from males in an attempt to prove yourself wrong...or right, as the case may be. I'm nobody's toy! That's...that's a lie! And you, Manic. You've suffered so much, you've gone through two adventures now - three, if you count Unova twice - but you wouldn't trade it for the world, would you? You secretly love this, and if your pokemon have to die, that's the price you're willing to pay. I am going to straight-up kill you. No. None of what she just said is false. Wh...what?
It might be the last thing you ever do. Milady, pull yourself together! I shall begin this battle! Oh, I have a special treat for you, you little monster.
All right, fine! Maybe I do want nothing more than to be accepted. Maybe I do look at myself and dislike what I see...but these people have moved past their loss and accepted me into their hearts. In them, I've found what I need! Taking a hit for your little hooligan friend, hmmm? How noble. How futile. I do enjoy watching my victims suffer before they die. The only one who's going to die here is you, you little tart! Stand back, Vanessa. Allow me.
Nnnngh...is that all you have? That's the best you can do, a feeble attempt to weaken our resolve and turn us against one another? Secrets are my stock in trade, Caitlin of Sinnoh, and I know the power they wield...and I know how to wrest that power from you! Nnngh...that was only one pokemon of six, you relic! You're right, Caitlin. Hmmm? I do like this. I live for it. The looks on my team's faces as they bring down their opponents, the expressions of the corrupt as I bring them off of their pedestals. This is life for me, all of it! The music, the laughter, the grief, the love, the pain, all of it is part of drinking deeply of life, and I wouldn't have it any other way! Speaking of love, yeah, okay, I do love her. And maybe things would've been different if I had been born human, who knows? But I wasn't. Here we are, here I am, and this is the only life we get. If the only way to express my feelings is by protecting her, then I'd gladly stand in the way of a rampaging Rampardos!
The rest of you must be fairly ready to vomit at hearing how horrid your teammates are. Why don't I just send out my Sigilyph and help you not have to worry about them anymore? Manic! Note the rime of frost? Note how unperturbed it seems? Got it. This thing knows Ice Beam, and I bet it knows a Flying attack too. None of us can fight that thing! Ice Beam lets me, Vanessa, and Calima out, and Arthur and Prometheus can't take a flying attack! Put me in. Dawn, your special defense is abominable! If it lands even one hit...! PUT ME IN!
Okay, fine. You're right! I have been pushing myself to my limits because of how maligned my species is. Cute little mascot, they call us. Fluffy neat freak. Maybe I've been afraid of not being taken seriously! Oh, how adorable! The fuzzy little fluff even admits it. Nice try, lady. It's possible to be both adorable and unstoppable. That duality is something I'm only now coming to accept, and I have you to thank for it. Now I know what my teacher meant all those years ago when he told me that real strength came from attacking the foes within! And what are you going to do, hmmm? Charm my Sigilyph to death?
The true power of the soul! OMEGA STRIKE! Ffffffff...it's fine, it's fine...all right, your little rat has gotten past her limits and taken down one of my aces with a single attack. It's fine, everything I have is an ace! Is it really fine, Caitlin? You think so? Yes, it is! I think you're afraid. I think you're terrified of me, and for good reason. That's why you murdered Jacob, and then Jonas. You were afraid of them, and you hoped to discourage me from continuing because you were afraid of me, too! Enough! Metagross, show them how 'afraid' we are! Take five, honey. I'm not done with her yet!
Mistakes, Caitlin! Everything you've done has been a mistake! Murdering my friends only compelled me to continue, and breaking me down only built me up stronger than before! Even now, you've made a critical error! Vanessa, Earthquake that thing! Don't underestimate my Metagross! All I have to do is heal it. Hee hee...my face when. You can't, Caitlin. And why not?
N-no...you can't! Wrong! I can, but I won't. Don't you realize by now that the lives of my friends are more important to me than quickly dispatching you? Vanessa, keep the pressure on, don't give her a chance to attack. Calima, here, a quick pick-me-up. Ahhh. Much better, thank you! Perhaps now you can understand. Yes, being Manic's oracle is a terrible burden, but it's also an immense honor. Even divided as she is, even with the deck stacked against her, her strength and leadership continue to shine through. I wouldn't abandon my role for anything! Hmph! An honor, you say. Look at the flawed team she's assembled. It's pitiful!
Nobody talks about my friends like that! Rrrrgh...damn it all! Your team is recovering more quickly than I expected. Musharna, put them back to sleep and sap their wills! Milady, I ask for this honor. May I step in and administer some long-overdue justice? Arthur, I'd like nothing better. Go get her!
As you cannot read me, allow me to do your work for you. Hmmm? I know the world's opinion of my people. Ruffians. Rogues. Ne'er-do-wells, down to the last. Many thanks, milady. Very welcome.
So weary have I become of this belief that I seek to be a beacon of nobility and strength, to use the strength of my fighting type and the cunning of my dark type to show that we can be more than the world knows. And yet, you still shy away from your own kind. You're ashamed, aren't you? The unfortunate fact is that most stereotypes are based on truth, only taken to extremes. Many of my kin are indeed the scoundrels they are taken for. Thank you again. It's all you, Arthur.
This, then, is my only...my only...*zzzz* What? How? A little-known trait of the Psychic/Dark relationship; they aren't truly immune to psychic attacks, only attacks that cause damage. Hypnosis still works splendidly. And now, my Gothitelle... Bleagh! Bleagh? Really? Remind me to introduce you to Frankie sometime. My Naughty male Gothita who knows Frisk. Let's...not.
Arthur! Snap to, you were in the middle of a sentence! Hmmmh? Ah, yes, quite. As I was saying, my only recourse is to provide an example to my fellows through my actions, to show them that a regimen of discipline and honor can bring even one of our standing up to the highest levels of prowess a knight can accomplish...
...and restore our names to the glory and honor we are capable of achieving! All respect, man. Never doubt that. Have you figured it out yet, Caitlin? We're all different, from vastly different walks of life, and we all have problems. Secrets. Things we don't like about ourselves and the world. Together, though... Where one is weak, the others can be strong. When one falls, the other can carry them. Impossible goals become not just achievable, but inevitable! It's over. Now we're just going through the motions. Insipid, sappy drivel, all of it! The only person you can truly count on is yourself! Bronzong, show them the door!
Silence yourself, foul harpy! Should you lay one finger upon my friends, expect to draw back a stump!
Caitlin, look at your single, solitary pokemon. See how it's shivering? Maybe a little, yes. You don't have any pokemon who believe in you. All that you have, all that you are, has been built upon a foundation of cowardice, murder, and betrayal. You chose this path for yourself, no one forced you to do this. With your pokemon and your power, you could have been something truly amazing. Instead, you chose to lurk and skulk and hide. I mourn you, Caitlin. Not the you I see before me, but the you that could have been. Arthur, end this.
As ever, I am your faithful servant, milady.
All our work, all our strength...our plans, and the plans of our forebears...all for nothing. Unova will be plunged into chaos without us, you know. We've become fixtures in the local political geography. Unova will go through a period of unrest, it's true...but it will survive and rebuild. If it can grow back from a cataclysm of fire and lightning, it can recover from the loss of you four. Just explain to me: why? Why like this? Believe it or not, sheer luck. Alder's arrival to Unova occurred shortly after your...Manic's...whichever, visit. His Nuzlocke was highly contagious, it was like tossing a match into a pile of dried leaves. We needed someone to blame, and we needed someone to act as a figurehead, as the four of us were too evenly matched. Grimsley came up with the plot, Marshall enforced it, Shauntal tied up any loose ends, and I controlled and removed anyone who was too much of an obstacle.
But it didn't go as planned. No. Alder, then still just a boy, hadn't finished his journey. We took him in, made him champion, scoured the region for rare candies. We explained to him that he was the cause of the plague, that he had inadvertently killed his starter. The 'sickness' that killed it was his own. He hated what he had done to the people of Unova, but by then, the entire region was affected...so we made a simple deal. He stayed away from the actual managing of the region and wandered as he pleased, and we didn't reveal the truth to the world and make him a pariah. And then, Ghetsis and N. Damn them, this all would have worked if they hadn't shown up! N with his self-righteous drivel, and Ghetsis with his own scheme. Using you to get rid of them was a master stroke, but they didn't cripple you nearly as badly as we had hoped. Alder threatened to go public with the truth, so we reeled him in, turned off the elevator from his chamber, and worked on damage control. You can see how well that went.
Even in this situation, he will insist that you challenge him for the championship. I wouldn't have it any other way. Sit tight, Caitlin. We're going to seal off the room, and the authorities will be along shortly. Prepare yourself. Alder may be reluctant, but he's the second-strongest champion I've ever met. Who's the first? She's gone...died to her own Nuzlocke, ten years ago. That's why I left Sinnoh. Goodbye, Caitlin. We won't meet again.
It's time. Nervous? A little. I think he was asking me. Yeah, I am. Fear not, milady. As ever, we stand by your side. Alder, hmm? What's he like? Nice enough guy, I guess. A bit of a spaz, but basically good. I can only hope that this will be our final battle. It will, I assure you. Causality radiates in a nexus from this point in time. The results of the coming battle will have effects ranging throughout the entirety of the continuum, regardless of which way it goes. I've seen this battle unfold in both directions, and they spiral off into vastly different futures. Which one we experience, we are about to determine.

And there you have it. Caitlin, possibly one of the world's most powerful psychics, was directly responsible for the deaths of Jonas and Jacob.
With the team's innermost secrets laid bare, they power through and use their unity as their strength to defeat the final member of the Elite Four!
One battle remains, to decide the fate of Unova...

crimsondoom You're REALLY going to enjoy Argent Ante when it comes up. XD So that's how they were doing that!
On the topic of the recent update... man, Caitlin's a bitch. It'd be one thing if she only murdered to gain power, but the implication was that she was making someone kill his own spouse just for the hell of it. Unforgivable.

Update #34: All In - vs. Alder
Ahhh, that's much better. Thank you. Everybody needs to get healed up. I don't know what Alder's packing, but you heard Caitlin; they scoured the region for rare candies for him. Stands to reason his pokemon will be at ludicrously high levels. All lines have Alder as an exceptionally powerful champion. What is all this about timelines and causality, anyway? I don't get it. Yeah, you lost me too. C'mon, let us have it! I'll try. Consider: where we are now, Manic can give Vanessa two Fresh Waters, or one, or none at all. Correct? I think I prefer the timeline where she gives me two. As do I, but the point is that the perception of time as a straight line is actually flawed. Every time a conscious mind acts upon the world, a new timeline is generated. Many timelines are so similar as to be functionally identical, but the more gravity a decision bears, the more different the branching timelines become.
I understand. So, every time I choose a move for one of you, there are manifold other timelines created; ones where I chose a different move, or used an item, and so on. Correct. In that sense, we are truly infinite; each of those timelines has their own version of us, experiencing that timeline. Which timeline we experience depends on our choices. As an example...in some timelines, we enter the battle with Alder and win. In some, we enter and lose. In some, we never enter at all. What happens in those timelines in which we are not victorious? I don't actually know. That's really more Franklin's forte'. I only know this: when I asked him the same question, he told me this: Any timeline in which a Manic falls...stops. Given the ashen expression on his face, I don't think that's an option. What, like...stops for us?
No. Stops altogether. It is an end to all things. Uhm...that sounds...bad. How can this be? How can Manic be a locus point to all that is? Ironically, she originally was not. The force that brought her here, reshaped her, dragged her through time and space? It bestowed this importance upon her. Hmph. So the very thing that destroyed her life made her victory a necessity. Fitting. A necessity, yes, but not an inevitability. Do you understand now, Manic? You aren't fighting just for yourself, nor for us, nor for Unova. You are fighting on behalf of all things everywhere! Then let's bring the thunder! Prometheus, will you do the honors?
Alder. Thank Arceus you're all right! Did they hurt you? No, no. I'm fine. There were several close calls, and a few times where a critical hit could have resulted in tragedy...but apart from that, it's all good. I...heard you talking to Caitlin. You know it all, then... I do. Manic, I'm so sorry, I never wanted any of this, I just- Shhhh. It's all right. I know. You've gone through so much for Unova...if anyone should be champion, it should be you. I almost wish I didn't have to fight you for it. If I didn't, and I just took the championship role, we'd just have the same war. Hah, I suppose so! Listen...
You're not so different, you and he. I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Both of you, at a young age, were dragged into something beyond your control. Both of you were made to suffer needlessly on behalf of others. Manic, I am...so tired. I know, Alder. I know. I just want this to be over. My life, wasted on a lie...free me from this, I beg you. I want to take what time I have left to travel, to see the world and drink deeply from the cup of life. We all need to rest, Alder. All of us have been through a great deal. We will claim the championship role, fear not. Heh heh...look at me, I'm supposed to be the champion, but I'm pouring my heart out to a young girl.
Yeah, sure, I'll face you if you want. HAH! Nice! Don't think I'm going to hold back, though! You'd better not, 'cause I sure won't! Arceus, it's been so many years since I could actually have fun with a match! Well, let's make this one for the history books, then!
Manic, I heard Prometheus talking. Is it true? I think so. This is bigger than all of us, Alder. I absolutely can not lose, no matter what! Then come at me! Bring your A game!
Yikes! Level spike! I expected nothing less from the champion. And I expected nothing less from you! Prometheus. Will you be all right? Ha ha...yeah. You know, I think no matter what happens here, I'll be okay. But for now - one way or the other - it's time for my swan song.
Never gonna give you up, Never gonna let you down, Never gonna run around and desert you! Never gonna make you cry, Never gonna say goodbye, Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you! Hah, nice! I guess I'm about to get rolled, huh? I've never met a better sport about it, Alder. It's an honor to face you.
For Manic, who brought light into my life, and those who gave their all to forge the world we need!
For justice, honor, and an end to the suffering of Unova's people!
For the greater good, in this world and all others!
For the courage to make things right!
For closure, rest, and the well-earned rewards of a life lived.
Unova couldn't ask for a better replacement. Manic, tell me. If you couldn't be champion, who would you select as your second? Not it! You know, I think I'd let Cheren make that choice. He's got a good head on his shoulders. Why do you ask? Oh, no reason...
For love. I couldn't have said it better myself.
I think...maybe I can finally move on now. I hope so, Alder. You've done far, far more than anyone could ask in Unova's service. Ha! I just realized...I'm going to need a starter. As it so happens, I know a professor who gives them out. An Oshawott this time, I think. Fiona, my Tepig...may she rest in peace...there's no replacing her. There's no replacing anyone, Alder. But you know that.
Maybe I could give you a few lessons before you take off, huh? Don't get cocky, now! You may have beaten me, but I'm still strong enough to challenge you once I get a team back together again! Wait, I just realized. Alder, do you know how to cure the Nuzlocke variant you have? I...I do. The cure is locked away in four parts, each in one of the E4's rooms. I think Fiona would like that a lot. We'll need to begin distribution right away. Manic...you know it won't cure your condition, right? It'll cure yours, Alder. That's all I care about.
So different from Hoenn's... I hope never to see this room again after today. You deserve a life, Alder. You're no Wallace, not by a longshot; go, live a happy life. Find someone special and settle down. You've fought enough. It's hard to believe it's finally over. I've dreamt of this for so long...
...and you have won my freedom. For that, I will forever be in your debt. Alder, I don't acknowledge the idea of debt between friends. You consider me a friend? After all you've been through? You're someone worth knowing, Alder. I consider it a pleasure and a distinction.
At long last...freedom.
Are you ready to go? Go? Go where? To your just reward. I'm pretty sure we're in the middle of it. Oh, no. There's much more to go after this. People to meet, including yourself.
Manic? Manic, what is happening to you? I don't know! Interesting. Each Manic has had their own way. One stepped through a portal. One faded away. One rose into the sky. You appear to be getting synthesized into the system! I don't understand it, but I feel okay, there's no pain. So this is normal?
Normal or not, I don't want you to go! Victor, don't worry! Whatever happens, I'll always come back for you! Don't fear, Victor. You will see her again, if the final Manic can complete his task. Then...then he'd better, or I swear, I'll find him! Don't fret, Victor. If he's me, then he'll find a way.
That's it, then? No victory dinner, no celebration? I think we've earned it! And you should totally have it! Heh, you're...kind of stupid. We can't do it without you. We...couldn't have done it without you. Hey, Dawn. Can I just have one quick hug? Yeah. *snf* While I still can. You really are fluffy, you know. A fluffy little badass. And don't you forget it!
Vanessa. Can you help to watch over the others? Of course I can. I don't know how you did it...I've known you for so little time, but the change in me has been so extensive! It is the way of every Manic. Every life it touches, changes. I'm glad you've found some peace, Vanessa. You're incredibly powerful and the prettiest Gliscor I've ever seen, and you can take that to the bank! Bank, you say. Hmmm, I don't know that Unova has one of those yet... Then go for it!
Milady, it has truly been an honor, an experience like no other! Arthur. You've served me better than anyone ever could have hoped. While I'm still champion- For the next few seconds! I decree that a statue of the entire team should be erected in the Pokemon League, commemorating the achievements of the entire team. And while it may never have been made official, I want the name Sir Arthur to be prominently featured! M-milady...Manic... You and all your kind deserve nothing less, Arthur. Let the whole region know that your line can be a force for good!
Is that what I look like? Well, yes. You didn't know? I haven't really checked myself out since that time back in Nuvema. Good lord, where did my pants go? You had pants? You won't hear me complaining! Victor! You're almost gone, aren't you? Yeah, I think so... There is nowhere in all creation safer than where she's going, Victor. Be patient, you will see her again. You'd best keep that promise!
Okay, now you can say it.

Update #35: Epilogue
Well, here we are, at long last. Yeah, uh, about that. Where exactly is 'here'? Well, it could be said that this is nowhere. I can tell from all the, uh...nothing. Hey, check it out, I'm a guy again! This is an in-between place. It's where you will meet yourselves. Also, yes, you are. The world that was binding you to your false gender no longer holds sway over you. You realize just how grammatically bizarre that sentence is, right? Try living here. To you, this is a temporary stop. To the Oracles, it's home. Prometheus, I have to ask. What'll become of the others? Victor, Calima, Arthur? This may be difficult to explain, but...time in this world is greatly accelerated. When you finally see them again - and you will, if the final Manic is successful - only a few minutes will have passed in their world. But, Calima... Calima was part of your team before all of this began, Manic. She has rejoined the timeline, and will experience it as the others do. Alone among your original team, she will join you at the end.
Okay. I have all sorts of questions, and now that we're free of all the distractions, I'd really like some answers. I'll do the best I can to provide.. So, why exactly was I dragged through all that? In the beginning, you hurt someone. It was justified, but it happened nonetheless. That person struck a deal with something foul, something with a great deal of power. Who? Who did I hurt that could possibly have justified what I just went through? If you really stop and think about it, I think it'll become obvious. Either way, I dare not say their name aloud; if they were to somehow find this place, it could be disastrous. Hmmm. Who's that off in the distance? Prometheus! You made it! That's wonderful. And this must be your Manic. Er...hi there. Franklin, maybe? The same.
I don't get it. I thought you could see timelines...why couldn't you see that he would make it? Because Oracles were never meant to be, Manic. Our insertion into any timeline is a necessary, but artificial thing. We can't see our own fates. Besides, the effort involved in determining which path you're taking at any given time is incredible. Imagine all those potential routes we talked about. Would both of you come with me? The other Manics will be anxious to see you both. How many are already there? Three. Self-Aware, Innocent, and Courageous. Then only one more remains! That's...good, right? Yes and no. On the one hand, only one more Manic needs to prevail over their trial. On the other, IT will pull out all the stops. What you went through was awful, but IT will be desperate. IT will pull out all the stops, understanding that this is ITs last chance. Ah, here are the others!
Misty. Seriously. Still gotta say Flannery here... Spoken like someone who's never met Candice. Uh...hi? Oh, hey! So you're the new one, huh? I'd say 'welcome', but you've been here for a long time. If that's a joke, I don't get it. Long story short, we're all apparently part of Manic. I don't get it. How can you all be me? That brings back memories. Let me explain, guys. I'm Self-Aware, remember. Okay, look. You are Manic, right? Experienced, if I remember correctly. So you have the memories of the original. Right? Right. Doesn't that make me the real article, though? We're all the real article. Just different aspects. To me, this is - was - all a game that I got pulled into. Innocent over there had to deal with Wallace - the evil Wallace - possessing people. Courageous had a wasting disease and a region that was aligned against him.
Why would anyone do this to us...me...whatever? I have a theory on that. I'm an author, and I know some of the tropes. But...if Franklin is right, saying it out loud could make all kinds of hell. So, what do you do around here? Wait, mostly. And watch. We can see what the other Manics do. Oh, hey, great job keeping your Oracle alive! I wish Penelope had made it... Don't feel bad, I feel the same about Creosote. We didn't know. Wait, so you saw all of that? Every bit. Man, that was insane. Harsh stuff. I hate to think what the next guy will have to deal with. Pull up a seat, get comfortable. The last show will start soon. Can't we help somehow? Heh heh. Yeah, we all ask that at first. I'm afraid not; you know it's true because we couldn't, no matter how much we wanted to. So, anyway. Flannery. I dunno, Elesa is pretty far up there...
Fits right in, doesn't he? Of course. Who can you hang out with if not yourself? We should tell him. I want to tell him too, but we have to wait. Focus on maintaining this space instead. They have to be protected, all of them. Creosote would have something funny to say right about now. Creosote's not here, Franklin. We have to make the best of this. Now, come on. Let's prepare for the next one. I don't know what's coming, but I bet it's not going to be pretty.

And that's the full package! Paint it Black comes to a close. But where one door closes, another opens.
It's time for the final Manic to face their trial, and let me tell you, it don't come easy!
If you've been reading the previous runs, you can guess which region is next, but if not...well, either way, get ready!
