My first one of the New Year's Extravaganza! With this being for Dramatic Melody's 5th prompt.
Note:
This is a small one-shot of two characters enjoying in the time and actions of a local mountain festival. This isn't impactful on the plot of Shattered Crests. Other than that, no more warnings. Enjoy!
“If there is anything I can’t seem to get enough of, it’s these tasty festival goodies,” Xi exclaimed cheerfully as he started gobbling down one after another from each and every stand he could go to. His festival companion, Phi, wasn’t exactly pleased with his gluttonous approach to this.
“Xi, you’ve been to every stand at least twice now,” she grumbled, finally pulling him away from the start of the third round. “Let someone else at least get a taste.”
“But it’s so scrumptious,” he argued but was shot down at Phi’s pointing to the belly starting to form on the anxious Incineroar. “Ugh fine,” he said with an annoyed grumble. The two started walking around looking at attractions here and there in the small town they decided to stay in. “So remind me what kind of festival this is again.”
“Something local I think to this region,” Phi said, rolling her neck. “I believe it’s called, ‘music of the mountains’.”
“Ah, I see,” Xi said with interest as he immediately looked at some of the mountains around at the mention of their relevance. “It’s cool that they do these things here in small towns. I mean, food is nice but it’s great to just kick back from work ei?” He gave a big happy grin to Phi, who despite her best efforts, failed to prevent a little curl of a grin herself.
Suddenly, something got Xi’s attention. He turned to hear sounds of clapping going on and rushed off towards it.
“Xi‽” Phi shouted after him, but he didn’t stop. She pursued until she joined alongside him gawking in the main square, with a crowd all gathered around.
The sound of many wind based musical instruments was in the air, and in the middle was a rather young looking Dewott playing the armstring on his left with the stick on his right. He was doing very keen twirls and taps as to the rhythm he and the enthusiastic players were doing one a platform on the currently not spraying fountain. The boy was focused upon what looked like a blushing little Braixen.
“What’s going on?” Phi said aloud.
Immediately one of the standing observers nudged her and said, “This be the square and when the mountain festival be playing everyone starts getting into the vibe. Some young lads try and woo their lovers while others just dance to the rhythm like the wind in the mountains.”
“I see.” Phi raised her finger to her Flygon mouth to think. Silly, but still a nice thought, she said in her mind with a smile. “Well, let’s go X-” To her dismay Xi was already in the middle doing what she could only assume was dancing upside down. Using his large strong hands to propel his body and spin himself in the middle. She face-palmed and dragged it down her face. “It was the dessert wasn’t it?” she said in an annoyed and embarrassed grumble.
But Xi’s performance was going well. Soon more mons started joining, doing all kinds of moves to the rhythm. The mons playing started getting even more pumped up and played a fast long melody. Xi was having fun. Suddenly, some of the mons around him joined hands and formed a circle around him and leaned from one side to the other chanting, “Spin! Spin! Spin!”
Getting the message quickly, Xi flipped back into a handstand and began twirling himself once more as the circle began doing their own spin together around him. Other circles were popping up with other mons doing the same thing as Xi.
What are they doing? Phi thought to herself but noticed some flying and psychic mons taking some kids up in the air and looking down. She flew up herself and looks down and was left awestruck. They were forming what looked like many circles with some singular mons filling in what looked like cartwheels from one to another. The music started slowing down as the circles broke and then formed one big one, Xi among them. Phi gave a sigh and just watching. “Heh,” she said to herself, “Even in regions like these. This is good to see.”
She landed back near the rim of the circle formed as the dancers inside had mostly cleared off, curious about what was about to happen next. A singular mon stepped in the middle, a Rhyperior. He held in his hands a large pole-like thing that took her a while to recognize. “A wind pole?” She stared at it with confusion, but piqued interest as this mon holding it in some kind of formal manner, waiting for something. He finally started tapping it on the ground with the beat of clapping from the ground outside. Suddenly, she felt a breeze coming from behind her and looked behind to see some flying bird mons blowing wind towards the square with their flapping wings. Quickly, she shot her eyes back as the Rhyperior closed his eyes and began spinning his stick. The many holes in it began to take in the air as he spun it around. Oddly enough it was forming a tune. Is he…playing it? Phi gasped in disbelief, but could plainly see the mon, despite him spinning the wooden pole, was firmly and strategically covering some holes and playing it using the wind. Speeding it up for moments of high pitch and less speed for lower moments, the Rhyperior began doing a musical theme that the band near him slowly began to play to. The ground had stopped clapping and were merely taking in the moment as their elder did in their highest of traditions.
Wind eh, she said to herself gazing upon the flock of happy faces all focused on this one mon. Well, I guess it is only proper a wind festival have wind music. After about five more minutes of this beautiful scene, the Rhyperior stopped the pole in front of him holding it firmly with both hands. He then let its bottom rest on the ground and opened his eyes. “To another season of joy to us all. May we partake in harmonies like the wind and its blessings. Joyous Aeroria.”
“Joyous Aeroria?” she repeated to herself.
“It’s a local name for his holiday.” Phi turned to see Xi walking up a little panting from all the fun he was having. “Apparently, the wind here holds a lot to the region. This was the origin of many wind instruments used in Sorphia.”
“I see,” she said with a smile as the two watched what looked like a basic Soprhian Halzt going on in the square, as the band played for the participants. “Well Xi, you want to partake?” She offered her hand and he graciously accepted it.
“Heh, two inquisitors eh?” he jested as they stepped out and joined.
“Nah, as friends and fellow participants.” The music around them resounded in the town as the fires that lit up the city let their light go up to the clear starry sky and the mountains around them. If their ancestors in the sky were looking down upon them, it would be in smiles as the many suns in the sky. The wind blew just right as if their festival pleased the mountains around.
