So! This is my Extravaganza piece for eldestoyster. I had mixed up two of their prompts—”An unexpected guest at 3AM” and “A chance meeting, seven years later—and came up with something that’s more appropriately described as “An unexpected guest, seven years later” ahaha. I hope that’s okay!
“Great job today, Wally!”
“Th-thanks, Mr. Blue!” Wally replied, making sure he stood as straight as possible. “That means a lot coming from you.”
“Heh, of course it does!” said Blue with a grin. “But seriously, great job. You made our jobs a lot easier since all those challengers couldn’t get past your Gallade. Right, Red?”
Wally was hoping he’d finally get some feedback from Red, but all he got out of him was a silent nod.
“Yeah, exactly!” said Blue, suddenly. Even if he’d been training in the Battle Tree for a few months, he still couldn’t get used to how Blue understood Red’s silence.
“I can’t wait to battle you again!” the former champion added. “I’m sure your team’s a lot stronger now, after all that training.”
“I-I hope so!” replied Wally, controlling his excitement. Ever since he lost to Blue the first time they met, he’d been daydreaming about their rematch. He knew that his Gallade was ready to take on his Pidgeot despite the type disadvantage, and the rest of his team weren’t going to go down easy either…
“I can’t wait!” he added, louder than he expected. “Just let me know if you wanna battle again!”
“I will, kid,” said Blue. “But for now, we gotta go. Red and I have a reservation at the Floating Restaurant in Seafolk Village that’s gonna expire in eleven minutes. Smell ya later!”
Wally waved goodbye as Blue and Red flew into the night sky with the latter’s Charizard. Behind him, the receptionist had finished closing up the entrance and nodded at Wally as she exited the premises. He was about to follow suit when one of his Poke Balls started shaking.
“Huh, Gallade? What’s up—”
He couldn’t even finish his sentence as out came his starter Pokemon and took a battle stance in front of him. Wally knew that this behavior only meant one thing—there was someone hidden nearby.
“Who’s there?” Wally said firmly. “Show yourself!”
It wasn’t the first time Gallade came out to protect him—it had come in handy when a pair of Team Skull grunts were about to ambush him. Good thing their Pokemon were no match for his Gallade, but since that incident Wally had always kept his guard up, knowing his frailty made him an easy target.
“If you’re from Team Skull, don’t even think about stealing my Pokemon,” he kept on shouting to no one. “I can call the police on you!”
“Ahaha! Well, look at you!”
Wally tried to follow where the voice was coming from, but the surroundings were already too dark to see clearly. All he knew was that it was a woman’s voice, and one that seemed oddly familiar.
“Hee hee! Can’t see me, can you?” the voice taunted.
“Gallade, can you sense where she is?” Wally whispered to his Pokemon. Gallade nodded in reply and motioned to one of the trees to the side.
“Hey, hey, don’t tell your Gallade to attack me!” the voice suddenly said in a less playful tone. “Don’t worry! I mean you no harm.”
“Then show yourself!” Wally said, making sure his voice didn’t betray his fear. “No use in hiding now that we know you’re there.”
“Hmm… I guess you’re right…”
Out of nowhere, a figure jumped down from one of the trees and landed a few meters away from Wally. He took a step back in shock, while Gallade shifted his angle so he was directly facing the unknown threat.
The figure, a woman who was only slightly older than Wally, was donning a white cape that draped behind her, though it was obviously tattered and worn out. It hugged a black t-shirt with two red crescents printed on it, ones that matched her earrings. But what caught Wally’s attention the most were her knee-high socks—or at least the blue spiral-shaped anklet that wrapped around one of them. Even from afar, Wally recognized that the anklet was holding a Key Stone, which told him that he was facing a powerful trainer.
The woman dusted off her gray shorts before turning to him and saying, “Well, well. You’ve become much stronger these past few years, haven’t you Wally?”
His eyes widened at the sound of his name. “Who...who are you? And how do you know who I am?”
“Hee hee, that’s a good question!” she said as she walked closer. “The first one, at least. I’ve been trying to find the answer to that these past few years! I’ve been going around regions, catching Pokemon, challenging trainers, searching for a new purpose... You know, the usual self-discovery stuff!”
Wally instinctively took a few steps back as she got closer, but he knew he had to stand his ground. He didn’t want to make it too obvious that he was scared. He at least could count on Gallade looking tough enough to make up for it.
“Oh?” she said. “You really don’t remember me, do you?”
“No,” he replied, clearing his throat. “N-not at all.”
“Hmm, I suppose you wouldn’t,” she said, stopping a few meters away from Wally and crossing her arms. “We didn’t actually have a proper meeting before, did we? But you know who I am, especially because your rival does.”
“M-my rival?” he said, taken aback. “Wait, you mean May?”
“The one and only!” she said with an uncomfortably high amount of excitement. “The Hoenn League Champion… the battling prodigy… the new Successor…”
“Successor?” he repeated. “Can—could you please tell me who you are?”
“Ok, ok,” she said as she made a slight curtsey. “I’m Zinnia.”
It took Wally a few seconds, but he remembered exactly when he last heard that name. Seven years ago, May had come over to his house in Petalburg to give him back his Key Stone, one that was stolen from him several days prior. She then told him about everything that had happened—how she caught Rayquaza, how she went to space, and how she saved the world from an asteroid. He was equal parts amazed and worried at what she had gone through, but he already knew not to expect anything less from her.
But more importantly, she told him who had stolen his precious Key Stone. And the thief was standing right in front of him.
“You… You’re the one who took my Key Stone!” Wally said in a mixture of frustration, confusion, and fear.
“That’s right!” she replied excitedly, making Wally grip his Gallade-shaped wooden pendant tightly. The action made Gallade firm up his stance even more—he was more than ready to strike at the command of his trainer, and he was already preparing himself for a possible mega evolution.
“Oh, don’t worry!” she continued after noticing the reaction. “That’s all in the past. I’m not going to steal anything from you.”
“How can I trust you?” he snapped back. “If you’re not planning to steal my pendant again, then why were you sneaking around?”
“I suppose that is suspicious,” she said nonchalantly. “But really, I only got your Key Stone to save the world! Or at least I tried to. Didn’t May explain what happened when she gave it back?”
“She did,” said Wally. “But that doesn’t mean it was right! Those days when I didn’t have my pendant… Those were the worst days of my life...”
He tried holding back the tears, but he could feel his eyes becoming watery. He remembered feeling very honored when Steven Stone, one of Hoenn’s former champions, had recognized his potential and given him a Key Stone. He knew exactly which Pokemon he wanted to mega evolve, so much so that he carved a wooden pendant with his head’s shape that he wore every time.
So when he woke up that morning and found out that it was missing, he felt devastated, like all his hard work meant nothing.
“Aww, don’t cry!” he heard Zinnia say, snapping him back to reality. He hadn’t noticed that Gallade was already beside him, trying to comfort him with gentle pats. “Don’t worry, that’s all in the past. I know you won’t forgive me for what I did, but we’re both different people now, right? Like I said, you’re much stronger than you were all those years ago.”
“Th-thanks, I guess,” said Wally in between sniffs. “B-but why are you complimenting me? It’s not like you’ve battled me or anything.”
“Hee hee!” he heard her say. “Don’t take this the wrong way, ok? But I’ve been watching you battle the entire day.”
“Wh-what?” he gasped, noticing that Gallade was also shocked by the answer. “How can I not take that the wrong way?”
“I wasn’t plotting anything against you!” Zinnia reassured him, planting her hands firmly on her hips. “When I got here, I was curious what this whole Battle Tree thing was all about. But then I saw you talking to someone in the entrance, and I recognized who you were from all those years ago. So I decided to get a little preview of the Battle Tree by watching you, and since there weren’t any seats for audience members…”
Wally couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Not only was this Zinnia person the pendant thief from seven years ago, but she’d been stalking him the entire day! He was convinced that he needed to report her to the authorities right away, but he knew that he didn’t really have enough evidence against her. And she could easily escape, considering how stealthy she could be.
“And, you know, that Blue person was right,” she heard her say. “You really did a great job today.”
Wally was taken aback by the compliment. “H-how so?”
“How so?” repeated Zinnia. “How so? You and Gallade, you’re one of the best pairings out there! You defeated every challenger that crossed you, right? Even that Rock-type specialist who’s a member of this region’s Elite Four!”
“You mean Kahuna Olivia?” he said. “She was the most difficult challenger I battled today. That Lycanroc of hers is terrifying…”
Gallade hummed in agreement. He had to stomach a Continental Crush from Olivia’s Lycanroc, which even in his mega evolved form was still a tough attack.
“But you still beat her! And she’s an Elite Four member!” Zinnia said with excitement. “You know who you remind me of? May.”
He couldn’t help but smile at that remark, but he knew she was just trying to get to his good side. “What? No… May’s all kinds of amazing. I’m nowhere near her level of skill.”
“Ah, that’s where you’re wrong! Hee hee!” she said, her wide grin showing off her sharp teeth. “You battle so effortlessly and smoothly, just like May. And from what I’ve seen, that Gallade of yours would make her Blaziken nervous.”
Wally saw his Gallade perk up at the compliment. It’s been years since he last battled his riv—his friend, and while he never even came close to beating her in any of their previous battles, he was looking forward to showing her how much he’s improved all these years.
“That’s very kind of you to say, Ms. Zinnia,” Wally said after a few moments of silence. “But that doesn’t change how… how weird this whole situation is…”
“Ah, don’t worry about that!” she said with a wink. “I won’t be making you uncomfortable anymore, promise. In fact, you’ve more than convinced me to take on the Battle Tree tomorrow!”
“Wha—” he managed to blurt out before clearing his throat. “You’re gonna challenge the Tree?”
“Of course!” she replied. “And I want you to be my very first opponent!”
“Well, uhmm, that’s not how it works—”
“Oooh, I’m so excited!” she said over him. “I’ve seen how you battle, and I just know that my team and I are gonna have such a hard time beating you! But we’re gonna bring our A-game tomorrow, so don’t take it in easy on us, ok?”
“Uhh…” was all Wally could reply. In the span of a few minutes, this Zinnia person went from being an almost-thief to an actual thief to a bubbly fangirl to a serious challenger. Even Gallade seemed like he was having a hard time processing what he was hearing.
But he knew one thing for sure—both of them would never back down from a challenge. Not anymore.
“Uhh, of course!” he said with the most confidence he’s had in the entire conversation. “We’re gonna do our best, too. Right, Gallade?”
Gallade nodded in response and took on a more elegant battle stance, making Wally smile.
“Oooh, that’s real nice, Wally!” she said. “That’s exactly what I’d expect from May’s rival. And, well, sorry for what happened seven years ago. You won’t hold it against me, will you?”
She didn’t wait for him to reply. All she did was give a slight wave as she ran away from the Battle Tree and into the darkness of Poni Gauntlet.
When he sensed that she was really gone, Wally let out a deep sigh. He looked at Gallade beside him, who wore the same confused expression that he did.
“I don’t know either, Gallade,” he said with a shrug. “But at least she wasn’t dangerous. And hey, we have her battle to look forward to tomorrow, right? I wonder what Mega Pokemon she uses?”
Wally kept on thinking about his unexpected visitor as he held Gallade’s hand and asked him to teleport to the Seafolk Village Pokemon Center.
A Visitor
“Great job today, Wally!”
