Hello People of the internet!
My name's Coda, and I'm planning a Nuzlocke half comic half kinetic novel (a visual novel without choices). So, some things will be pictures instead of text which is what's in the **XXX***. Those are notes for me and are liable to change when I actually start story boarding, but feel free to use them as reference u.u Thanks for tuning in!
Chapter 1: Deja Vu
Scene 1
Scene 1
***BG: Annie waiting in hall outside Oak’s lab***
Tk tk tk. The sound of a clock on the wall echoes through the hallway, and Annie fidgets. She double checks her own watch to make sure the one on the wall wasn’t fast. ***SP: A wall clock- 10:31am***
No luck. She sighs and wrings the bottom of her shirt; somehow the delay made the knot in her stomach tighter. The sound of footsteps breaks the metronome silence of the clock. Annie looks up to see one of Oak’s aides come around the corner towards Oak’s lab. He left his hair uncombed and had on a graphic t-shirt under his open lab coat, but he was intently looking over some documents when he happens to glance up.***Sprites: Annie, Clemson***
Clemson: Oh! Hey again, Annie.Annie: Ah, hello! Um, we’ve m-met, right? Clemson?
Clemson: Right-o. Congrats on passing your trainer’s exam.
Annie: Thank you!
Clemson notices the time on the wall clock.
Clemson: Speaking of which, weren’t you Oak’s 9:30?
Annie: Actually I was wondering if you knew where he was.
Clemson: Hm.... Can’t say I’ve seen him lately. I know he headed to Viridian, but that was even earlier.
Annie: …I hope he didn’t forget.
Clemson: Eh, Oak’s forgetful sometimes, but not with appointments. Since we’re waiting, did you remember your trainer card? Lots of newbies don’t.
***SP: Annie’s trainer card***
Annie takes out the small grey green card from her pocket.Annie: Y-yeah, it came yesterday.
Clemson: Nice. Personally I keep mine on my lanyard; quick access and if I forget, I just check around my neck.
Suddenly, Annie notices a shadow shift in the window of the office door; she tenses.
Annie: Er- Is anyone else in there?
Clemson: Nope, at least there’s not supposed to be right now. Maybe he’s back after all? Come on.
***BG: Oak’s Lab***
Clemson turns around to open the office door, and Annie follows behind him. Oak’s office is generally neat, except for the sticky notes plastered all over the walls and the papers strewn haphazardly over his desk around his computer. Two large bookshelves sit in the corner of the room, along with cabinet files, machines for his research, and a green topped table. A boy with bright orange brown hair and a black shirt with the collar popped up leans against the table with his arms crossed. He stands up and glowers as the two enter the room.
Blue: Well, it’s about time! With how busy you always are, I figured you could at least keep an appoint- Oh. It’s just you…
***Sprites: Annie, Blue, Clemson***
Clemson: What’s the matter? You look blue; not happy to see me?Blue: Har dee har. I wonder if everyone from Jhoto makes such “great” jokes as you.
Clemson: I try.
Blue: Where’s the old man? We were supposed to meet like hoooours ago.
Clemson: You were supposed to met an hour ago. Still, ‘s not like Oak to be so late. Last I saw, he went to pick up his new Pokedex model in Viridian, but he should’ve been back by now.
Blue huffs and rolls his eyes.
Blue: Ugh, he always keeps me waiting. I haaate waiting.
Clemson: I’m well aware.
Blue: Not enough space to breath in this lab, yah know; I’ve outgrown the place.
Annie: Well, uh, maybe he’ll be back soon?
***MP: Blue sizing up Annie***
It just occurs to Blue that there was a second person in the room, and he eyes Annie intently. Annie, in response, takes a step back and shuffles uncomfortably. Blue raises an eyebrow.Blue: And you are?
Annie: Um-! I, uh… We h-haven’t met, I’m, I’m-
Clemson: The other trainer getting a starter from Oak today.
Blue: Her? You?
Blue steps forward and takes a moment to look her up and down. When he was satisfied with whatever evaluation he had in mind, he smirks.
Blue: That’s cute.
Annie frowns and tries her best to keep eye contact.
***Sprites: Annie, Blue, Clemson***
Annie: I’m- I’m Annie…Blue: Hm. I guess training is a popular summer hobby.
Annie: Uh, sure.
Blue: The name’s Blue. You probably already knew that, but keep it in mind; you’ll hear it a lot soon.
Clemson: I’d figure. Blue’s a pretty common color.
Blue’s eyes narrow at Clemson, who shrugs and returns a smug grin.
Blue: Keep it up, orange peel. Little people need something to keep occupied.
Blue addresses Annie again.
Blue: So? What trainer school d’you study at?
Annie: I, uh, took private lessons.
Blue: Private lessons??? Like, alone? How’d you pass exams if you haven’t even battled properly?
Annie: I’ve battled; I just-
Blue: I guess I need to give you some advice then. A guy like me should remember to help out, right?
Oak: Is that you, Gary?
Professor Oak comes through the open door awkwardly carrying a medium sized box. Seeing it slipping, Clemson takes the box from Oak and sets it on his desk.
***Sprites: Oak, Blue, Clemson***
Oak: Thank you, Clemson. Blue: Yah know that’s not my name, Gramps.
Oak: What?
Blue: Not. My. Name.
Oak: Ah, right… I forgot.
Blue: Again.
Oak: Well, when you’re used to saying one name for years, it takes some getting used to, Ga- Blue.
Clemson: Weeeell, this is awkward.
Clemson sticks his hands in his pockets and scotches back over to the door past Blue, Oak, and Annie.
Clemson: Imma head out early on my assignment with Bert, a’ight, Professor?
Oak: What? Oh, right, yes. Ah, if you would, please tell the lab manager that I’m back and see if they can reschedule that interview at 11.
Clemson: Will do, professor. Later, Blue; later, Annie.
Clemson leaves to room and closes the door behind him. Blue flicks some hair out of his face and pouts.
Blue: Tsk. Whatever. Let’s just get on with it; you’re late.
Oak takes off his lab coat and drapes it over a chair, then rubs his temples as he checks the calendar on his desk.
Oak: I apologize for my tardiness. I got caught up in Viridian; they misplaced my parcel and- Uuugh, my whole schedule today has been set back hours. Anyway, I’m sure you’ve been waiting long enough.
Blue: I’ll say!
***BG: The green table with Ox and Vyrin on it***
Oak takes two pokeballs out of his desk and tosses them in the air. Pachoo! The red lights stream from the pokeballs and land on the table. A relaxed charmander stretches and sits while a proud squirtle stands and puffs out his chest. Oak: This is Ox, your new partner, Blue. And this is Vyrin, Annie’s new partner. Together you will-
Blue: Yo! Can’t we get on without the speech? This isn’t one of you radio talks.
Oak: ...Fine. Since you can’t wait even a minute.
Oak gestures to Ox, the squirtle who tries to puff his chest out even farther than he already had.
***MP: Blue looking at Ox***
Blue bends over to look Ox in the eye.Blue: Hmph. He doesn’t look so tough.
Ox: Wha-!? Hmph yourself! You don’t look all that cool either, you spikey haired poser!
Blue: Why you little runt!
Ox: Hair gel wearing jerk!
Oak: Oh, come now. Settle down.
The two immediately bickerer back and forth, ignoring Prof. Oak.
Vyrin: This is nothing new; now he’s got someone who’ll argue back.
Annie: Heh… I guess. Should we… stop them?
Vyrin: They’ll get tired eventually.
Vyrin watches the squirtle go at it with Blue; so mildly amused, he was no longer annoyed. Annie’s eyes drift down and fixate on Vyrin’s tail flame as it flickers; it almost seems to crawl up his tail like a match.
Oak: Oh, come now. Settle down.
The two immediately bickerer back and forth, ignoring Prof. Oak.
***MP: Annie and Vyrin looking at each other***
A bead of sweat runs down the side of Annie’s face and she glances at Vyrin. Vyrin glances back with a knowing look.Vyrin: This is nothing new; now he’s got someone who’ll argue back.
Annie: …
Vyrin: What?
Annie quickly looks away.
Annie: N-! Nothing…
Vyrin: Hm.
Annie: Uh… So-
Annie: W-w-what!?
Blue: Come one! Right now, let’s go!
Annie: B-b-but we’re inside! And that’s not- th-they haven’t even-
Vyrin: Alright.
Annie: W-w-wait a minute!
Vyrin casually hops off the table and side glances at the young squirtle. Ox leaps off and runs to tackle Vyrin as soon as he lands.
Blue: Oi?!
Vyrin: I dunno; it’s pretty hard to take you seriously.
Ox: You just watch when I kick your butt next time!
Vyrin: Didn’t you say the first time?
Blue: See? You’re hopeless without me.
Blue recalls Ox into his pokeball and tosses the ball in the air a couple times. He turns towards the door and fixes his collar.
Blue: I’m outta here. Time to whip this kid into shape. Smell you later, Gramps!
Oak: Wait! I need to give you-!
Blue runs out of the office and slams the door behind him before Oak can finish his sentence.
Oak rubs the bridge of his nose and heaves a heavy sigh.
Oak: He’ll be back when he realizes he doesn’t have any pokeballs. I thought asking him to test the pokedex- Ugh, one of these days that attitude of his...
Oak: You didn’t come to hear me prattle about him. I hope you don’t mind; there’s not much time left for me to stay, but I really appreciate you volunteering to test my new pokedex model.
Annie: No, no, it’s no problem. I appreciate you g-giving me a starter.
Oak: Here it is, and some pokeballs to get you started. Work hard with your partner and let your pokemon journey unfold! Oh, and please tell your mother I said hi.
Vyrin: What?
Annie quickly looks away.
Annie: N-! Nothing…
Vyrin: Hm.
Annie: Uh… So-
***Sprites: Annie, Blue, Vyrin***
Blue: Hey, you! Battle me! I’ve gotta show this shell head who’s boss!Annie: W-w-what!?
Blue: Come one! Right now, let’s go!
Annie: B-b-but we’re inside! And that’s not- th-they haven’t even-
Vyrin: Alright.
Annie: W-w-wait a minute!
Vyrin casually hops off the table and side glances at the young squirtle. Ox leaps off and runs to tackle Vyrin as soon as he lands.
***MP: Ox rushing at Vyrin***
Ox: Get ready! This time I’ll get you!Blue: Oi?!
***BG: 3 in succession: Vyrin trips Ox/ Ox falls on his back/ Vyrin sits on Ox***
Ox: Arhg! Hey! Get off! Fight me like you mean it!Vyrin: I dunno; it’s pretty hard to take you seriously.
***Sprites: Oak, Annie***
Oak: … the pokedex. And he’s gone.Oak rubs the bridge of his nose and heaves a heavy sigh.
Oak: He’ll be back when he realizes he doesn’t have any pokeballs. I thought asking him to test the pokedex- Ugh, one of these days that attitude of his...
***SP: Kanto pokedex***
Oak grabs one of three Pokedexes out from the box he’d brought in earlier before also getting some empty pokeballs off his desk. He hands them to Annie who takes them gingerly.Oak: You didn’t come to hear me prattle about him.

Scene 2
***BG: Annie waiting outside by the door***
Annie walks out of Oak’s lab with Vyrin. She leans against the wall and takes out her cellphone, so Vyrin takes a seat. While the call dials, Annie worriedly looks at her trainer card.Mom: Hey, sunshine! How’d it go? Tell me all about it! You met Vyrin and got the pokedex?
Annie: Yeah… I did.
Mom: Just ‘yeah’? Nothing else happened? You picked him up and left. I know you’re nervous but…
Annie: I’m just a little- T-there was a guy named Blue there too, and he wanted to battle almost immediately, but I froze up…
Mom: Blue? Oh, that’s right; you mean, Gary Oak? That boy just likes to brag. All you need is a bit more practice outside the classroom. That’s all.
Annie: I guess. I’m starting to think I should’ve just applied to college or something.
Vyrin looks up at Annie; his brow furrows.
Mom: Annie, what did he say to you?
***Sprites: Annie, Phone***
Annie rubs the back of her calf with the opposite foot. Annie: N-nothing, I… It’s…
Mom: Clearly it was more than nothing.
Annie: I just- Blue was so sure of himself, and I’m… not. Maybe this isn’t such a good idea after all?
Mom: Annie, we talked about this; be positive. You’re prepared. You’ve taken the classes; you passed the exam. No one’s asking you to beat the Indigo Plateau tomorrow. Accountability, remember? Two badges, you said.
Annie: One for my first time and the second once I’ve gotten the hang of things.
Mom: That right. And if after two you don’t want to continue, then you come home and we’ll plan your next step. What’s important is that you try. Plus, you can put winning badges on your resume.
Annie: That’s true.
Mom: No more procrastinating?
Annie: No more procrastinating. I’m pretty close to Route 1 anyway.
Mom: Fantastic! Oooh, I wish I could see you off again. You’ve got your bag right? (Annie: Yes) Flashlight and extra batteries? (Yes.) ID? Wallet? (Yes.) Spare underwear? (Yeees mom.) Alright. Call me when you get to Viridian okay! I love you! Stay sunny and your plants will grow! ^3^
Annie: Haha, okay. I love you too.
***Sprites: Annie, Vyrin***
With that, Annie hangs up the phone, but she holds onto her trainer card for another moment. Vyrin gets up, crosses his arms, and slowly cocks an eyebrowVyrin: Dr. [Last name] seems far more enthusiastic about this than you.
Annie: *sigh*...She kind of is.
Vyrin: Ready?
Annie puts her phone and her ID in her pocket, then adjusts her backpack on her shoulders.
Annie: As I’ll ever be.
Vyrin: Sure, that’s the spirit.

Chapter 2: Getting to Know You
Scene 1
***BG: Annie and Vyrin walking down Route 1***
A cool wind balances out the summer heat as it rustle the leaves on nearby trees. Since the day has begun, the sun drifts upwards in a clear sky. Annie strolls down Route 1 with a pen in hand and her nose in a notebook while Vyrin trails after her feet as they walk.Annie: So it’ll take about 35 minutes to get to Viridian, and I’ll need to see if the hotel by the Center still has rooms before 1pm, then…
Trailing off, Annie mutters to herself. Vyrin glances up at her every few steps and grunts.
Vyrin: Soo. Are we gonna go in the grass or what?
Annie: Er, not yet.
Vyrin: You’ll have to sooner or later.
Annie: We’re not ready yet. We don’t have any potions, and when something goes wrong, we’ll be completely unprepared.
Vyrin: Don’t you mean “if”?
Annie slows for a moment, shakes her head, and continues at the pace she had been going. Vyrin, on the other hand, stops. He frowns and taps his foot, watching her for a moment before going into the grass himself. The rustling alerts Annie, so she immediately whirls around.
***Sprites: Annie, Vyrin***
Annie: What are you doing!?Vyrin: Taking initiative.
Annie: Get out of the grass; you’ll be attacked.
Vyrin: That’s the point.
Annie: Not exactly!
Vyrin: Calm down already; it’s called Route 1 for a reason. All the pokemon in this area are generally docile or skittish. I’d be surprised if anything actually does pop out.
***SP: Scratch Solo***
Ratatta: Rattata!Annie: WAAH!
Quickly a small fluffy ratatta jumps out of the grass at Vyrin. Annie jumps back and nearly drops her notebook.
***MP: Scratch circling around Vyrin***
Ratatta: ((Oh wow, look at you! Look at you! What kind of pokemon are you? You’re really orange. You’re not burning yourself are you? Hi! It’s nice to meet you!))Vyrin: ((You shouldn’t pop out at people like that, kid. You spooked my trainer.))
Ratatta: ((You’re trained!? Wow! Is that her?))
Both the ratatta and Vyrin look over at Annie who frantically fumbles around to get out the pokedex.
***MP: Annie scrambling for the pokedex***
Annie: Okay! Don’t panic…!? Uum… To register a pokemon I just need to- Oh geez, what moves does Vyrin know?Ratatta: ((Oh wow, I really did spook her... No one’s ever been afraid of me before.))
The small ratatta hops its way through the tall grass and trots up the route to Annie. Annie whimpers and movers away from the pokemon, but it continues to try sniffing her. They wind up chasing each other in a small circle.
***Sprites: Annie, Vyrin, Scratch***
Ratatta: ((Did I really scare you? This is weird. I’ve never seen a trainer up close before. Why are you moving away?)) *sniff sniff*Annie: UUUUUUH!? Vyrin!? D-do something please!
Vyrin: He’s just curious.
Annie: Gynnnnnnnn! Don’t scratch, don’t scratch!
Vyrin: If you’re really that scared, just catch him already.
Ratatta: ((Scratch??? Is that me?! Are you gonna catch me!?))
At the thought of being caught, the little purple pokemon speeds up to get closer to Annine.
***BG: Annie throwing a pokeball frantically***
Annie nabs one of the empty pokeballs from her shoulder sash and throws it as soon as she does. ***MP: Series of 3: Pokeball missing Scratch, rolling along beside him, stopping by a facepalming Vyrin***
It misses…Vyrin facepalms and drags his hand down his face. He grabs the pokeball, walks over to the young ratatta, and pokes him with ball. Pachoo! The red light engulfs the pokemon before retreating into the pokeball, only wobbling once.
***Sprites: Annie, Vyrin***
Vyrin: Here!Vyrin tosses the ratatta’s pokeball at Annie. It bounces off one hand, then the other, but Annie manages to catch it.
Vyrin: I’m embarrassed for you. He thinks his name is Scratch now, by the way.
***SP: Annie holding Scratch’s pokeball***
Vyrin briskly walks away from her down the route. Annie squints at him as he goes, and after a moment, stares down at the pokeball in her hands. Fade to White =======================================================
Scene 2
Scene 2
***BG: Pokemart interior***
Annie peruses down the aisle of a Pokemart general store with a basket and a shopping list in hand, as Pallet Town and Viridian City were not far at all. Vyrin waits by the door as Annie fills the basket halfway with potions and pokemon food, and she reads the back of an antidote.Annie: Hmmm, I have enough pokeballs thanks to Prof. Oak. I wonder if I should get these now; I won’t need them until-
Trainer: Ugh, I can’t believe the gym is still closed!
Across the aisle, a couple of annoyed trainers complain.
Trainer: I was gonna get my third badge there. Now I have to change all my plans.
Other Trainer: Didn’t you check online on the Center PC? It’s, like, almost always closed. Only Plateau challengers take one the Viridian gym. Apparently the leader is super busy with some business he runs.
Trainer: Pretty bogus if you ask me…
Other Trainer: Well, I’m headed to Celedon; it’s the most popular gym in the summer and a few of my friends’re gonna meet me there. Wanna come with?
The trainers walk away, and Annie sighs.
Annie: ...I was hoping there’d be a chance it was open.
Putting down the basket to take out her notebook, Annie scratches out half a page of jottings for strategies she’d made note of for the Viridian gym. She then tosses three antidotes into her basket and goes to the register to check out. Vyrin notices and comes over to Annie as she waits.
***Sprites: Annie, Vyrin***
Vyrin: What are you doing?Annie: W-waiting in line?
Vyrin: Wow, Clemson’s rubbed off on you that quick?
Annie: Well, what else am I doing?
Vyrin: The antidotes, Annie.
Annie: What about them? We’ll have to go through Viridian forest to Pewter since the gym is closed, and there are a lot of w-weedle in that forest.
Vyrin: Yeah, but why are you getting so many? I’m a fire type; weedle won’t be a problem. You shouldn’t waste your money.
Annie: I just want to be prepared.
Vyrin: There’s a difference between prepared, and paranoid.
Annie: …
Cashier: Miss, are you ready?
Annie: Ah-! Y-yes!
Annie ignores Vyrin and buys the antidotes anyway.

Scene 3
***BG: Viridian Forest***
A dense patch of forest grows around Route 2. Tall trees stand close together as the afternoon sunlight filters down through thick clusters of branches and leaves. Annie stands before the thick woods, deep breathing in and out. In and out. Vyrin sits beside her tapping a finger against the ground as Scratch stretches out his little legs.Scratch: ((Mmmmm, it’s weird in that little ball, but kinda cozy. Are we going into the forest?))
Vyrin: ((At this rate, we’ll be here all day.)) Annie, we goin’ or what?
Annie: Yes…! Just... G-gimme another moment.
***Sprites: Annie, Vyrin***
Another minute passes; Annie gazes up the path at the large, dark forest full of tall, tall grass and wild pokemon.Annie: Ummmm…?
Vyrin: Yeah?
Annie: We, uh, we’re probably gonna start actually training now.
Vyrin: Oh really? I don’t know; what if something pops out at us?
Annie side eyes him and frowns before walking forward into the Viridian Forest.
Annie: Oh geez…
Vyrin: Tsk, ah well. You at least got it’s info in the pokedex?
The screen of the pokedex lights up with the Pidgey information. Just for the sake of it, Annie presses the speak button and it recites the blurb aloud.
“Pidgey. A common sight in forests and woods. It flaps its wings and ground level to kick up blinding sand.”
Annie: Yep. This is Pokedex is really convenient.
Vyrin: Aren’t you gonna eat?
Annie: I will in a minute. Let me get the rest of this down.
She writes down some things in her notebook; journaling, strategy ideas, a mental note to work on Scratch’s accuracy before attack power. Vyrin shrugs and takes large bites out of his meal. When finished, Scratch scooches a little closer to Vyrin.
Scratch: ((Helloooo~))
Vyrin: ((Do you really like being called Scratch? What was your name before this?))
Scratch: ((Mmmm, doesn’t matter; I like Scratch. It feels better.))
Vyrin: ((Homesick?))
Scratch: ((Not really.))
Vyrin: ((You’re pretty young to be out in the open on your own like that. Where’s your family?))
Scratch: ((Mm Unno. I get left behind a lot.))
Vyrin’s eyes widen a bit. His brow furrows, and he squints nervously at the young rattata.
Vyrin: ((And you’re just... okay with that?))
Scratch: *shrugs* ((It’s happened before. I catch up later, and they say they’re surprised I didn’t get eaten. But I’m with you guys now!))
An awkward silence passes as Scratch looks happily and innocently at Vyrin. Vyrin coughs and regrets asking.
Scratch: ((Well, sorta. My brothers and sisters liked to wrestle a lot, but I wasn’t very good at it. I got sat on a lot.))
Vyrin: ((Why were you so excited to be caught then?))
Scratch: (starry eyed) ((It was really exciting!))
Vyrin: ((Gimme a little more, kid.))
Scrtach: (Hmmmmmm))
Vyrin ((...Don’t hurt yourself.))
Scratch: ((Uuuum. I’ve seen trainers before, but not this close. There are lots of stories too. Some are bad, like pokemon being stolen and hurt. But others say humans are great ‘cause they make you really strong. And I’ve never seen a pokemon like you before. You look strong, but… um, she doesn’t.))
Vyrin: ((Ha. No, she doesn’t.))
Scratch: ((No one’s run away from me before. D’yah think she’ll be okay?))
Vyrin: ((I’ll be honest with yah, kid; I dunno. We just started, sure, but so far I’m not impressed.))
Scratch: ((You did?))
Vyrin: ((Technically, but I have a bit of previous experience. A scientist needed help with some pokemon catalog.))
Scratch ((What’s a scientist?))
Vyrin ((Oh right, young and wild. So!))
And Vyrin explains to Scratch about pokemon scientist and such.
Vyrin ((And they like to work up close to pokemon; that’s where I came in. Then I worked with some breeders helping younger pokemon train; Annie’s mom was one of them. Oak was looking for volunteers for his new doohickie, and I guess Annie was available so… Yeah. ))
Scratch: ((Wow, you’re like a big brother!))
Vyrin: ((I- !? … No. Not really.))
Scratch: ((Did I say something wrong?))
Vyrin: ((No... No. We should get some sleep, okay?))
Vyrin glance over at Annie, still writing with a plate of cold food beside her.
Vyrin: Annie! Yah still haven’t eaten yet!?
Annie: I’m- I’m almost done!
Vyrin: That book ‘a yours isn’t goin’ anywhere!
==================================================================Vyrin: Yeah?
Annie: We, uh, we’re probably gonna start actually training now.
Vyrin: Oh really? I don’t know; what if something pops out at us?
Annie side eyes him and frowns before walking forward into the Viridian Forest.
***BG: Vyrin using Ember/ Scratch fumbling with Quick Attack***
Annie spends the next few hours teaching Vyrin and Scratch new moves. Vyrin picks up on Ember quickly and spits the small flames without an issue after a couple of tries. Scratch, on the other hand, has quite a bit of trouble learning Quick Attack; he builds up the speed, but either misses his target completely or simply doesn’t have enough force behind his small body. ***BG: Pidgey using Sand Attack on Vyrin***
In the afternoon, Annie and Vyrin try to capture a pidgey. Vryin keeps close to the pokemon with Scratch to try and keep it from flying, but when Annie throws a pokeball, it swats the ball away, blows sand into Vyrin’s face, and flies away anyway.
***BG: Viridian Forest (at night) & MG: A campsite with Scratch and Vyrin***
The sun sets as evening rolls around, so Annie decides to set up camp before they lose all the daylight. She unpacks a small one-man tent, goes to gather a bit of firewood, and makes a fire ring out of rocks like the outdoor book instructed. Instead of using matches, she asks Vyrin to light it with Ember. He does so, and the flames lick against the bark of the wood. After getting the two pokemon dinner, Annie curls up in her sleeping bag, sets her own dinner next to herself, and takes out her notebook. Vyrin and Scratch eat by the flickering fire; Scratch happily nibbles away, but Vyrin eyes Annie curiously.Vyrin: Aren’t you gonna eat?
Annie: I will in a minute. Let me get the rest of this down.
She writes down some things in her notebook; journaling, strategy ideas, a mental note to work on Scratch’s accuracy before attack power. Vyrin shrugs and takes large bites out of his meal. When finished, Scratch scooches a little closer to Vyrin.
***MP: Scratch and Vyrin talking***
Vyrin: ((Hey, kid.))Scratch: ((Helloooo~))
***Sprites: Vyrin, Scratch***
Vyrin: ((Er, well. You got a bit of work to do with that Quick Attack. New to battling?))Scratch: ((Well, sorta.
Scratch stops to think for a moment and scrunches up his face in heavy concentration.

Chapter 3: Better Left Unsaid
Scene 1
***BG: Viridian Forest***
The morning sun breaks through the leaves of the Viridian Forest trees, and the caws of distant pidgey greet the day. The tent is all packed up; the fire has been smothered. Annie sits next to a tree, absentmindedly looking over a map and munching on a granola bar after giving Scratch and Vyrin breakfast.Annie: Huh..., we’re way father in than I thought. I could’ve sworn…
Caterpie: Caterpie?
Annie: WAAH!?
***SP: Lyra solo***
Annie bolts up to her feet and nearly trips over her bag scrambling away from the tree. She turns around to see a caterpie with curly antenna crawling down the trunk next to where she was sitting. Caterpie: Caterpie!? Cater pie pie caterpie…
Annie: UM?
Vyrin rolls his eyes and swallows a mouthful of food.
Vyrin: She said she didn’t mean to startle you.
So Vyrin continues to translate as the caterpie talks.
Caterpie: ((Hello! I don’t mean to intrude, but you seem lost.))
Annie: Ah- Well, um. Yeah, we, um, kind of are... Just a little… Um, do you know which way the city is? I must’ve followed the wrong trail at some point.
Caterpie: ((“City”?))
Vyrin: ((A place with lots of humans, in that direction supposedly.))
Vyrin points.
Caterpie: ((Oh, that place! I know that place. We’re not too far from there actually. I could show you a shortcut if you would like.))
Vyrin: ((That’s nice of you.)) She says she can lead us to Pewter. Let’s get going.
Annie: That’d be great. I’d like to get out of the forest now. Um, what should we call you, by the way?
Lyra: ((Lyra, if you please!)
***BG: Lyra leading Annie and co through the forest***
Lyra leads Annie and her team towards the exit, but takes a more direct way than the winding route path. It’s slow going, taking a good couple of hours with Lyra’s small stature and Annie’s avoidance of large tall grass patches. But it can’t all be avoided; Vyrin eventually convinces Annie to go through those patches if they want to keep following Lyra’s directions. Hesitantly, Annie makes her way through after the caterpie with Scratch happily treading behind her and Vryin walking ahead a few paces. ***MP: A weedle appears!***
Suddenly a weedle jumps out of the grass at Vyrin, menacing him with it’s pointy horn!Annie: Vyrin!?
Vyrin: I see it!
***MP: Weedle using Poison Sting on Vyrin***
Vyrin rolls out of the way of it and spits out an ember. However, the agile weedle ducks and dodges out of the way of the scattering flames. It slithers in close to Vyrin and jabs the charmander in the arm with a Poison Sting! Vyrin: Char!? Chrrrrr!
Vyrin growls at it while putting some space in between for another ember. This time the flames hit and scorch their mark. In a sudden panic the weedle tries to put itself out and runs away as it does so. Vyrin huffs some smoke out his nose, but despite his tough face, he winces at the poisoned cut on his arm.
Annie: Hold on!
Annie: Are you alright?
Vyrin: Fine. Caught me off guard, is all.
Annie: You leave yourself too open. I know you’re more experienced than Scratch, but please be more careful.
Vyrin: You sound apologetic. Yah know you’re supposed to be telling me what to do.
Annie: ......
Annie blushes nervously as she finishes patching up the cut.
Lyra: ((Oh my! That was rather invigorating! It’s been quite some time since I’ve seen a battle so close.))
As Lyra reflects on the combat she witnessed, suddenly she begins to glow.
Scratch: ((Oo, Oo! You’re glowing!))
Vyrin looks up at Annie.
Vyrin: She can’t move. Well? She is the one who knows the way out.
Annie: ... R-riiight…
Annie slowly picks up Lyra and awkwardly holds the newly evolved metapod out from her chest. Vyrin watches Annie’s shoulders tense and rise towards her head; he gives a soft low exasperated sigh. They continue walking through the woods, with Lyra saying the directions rather than showing and Vyrin translating what she says to Annie.
Lyra: ((There it is, just down the path.))
Annie sets Lyra down and stretches out her arms.
Lyra:((Speaking of which, I would propose coming with you? This is my first time outside the forest in years, and it’s all quite exciting. I’d also like to evolve again, so I can move on my own. This cocoon is rather inconvenient.))
Vyrin: She says.
Annie: Oh! Sure, yeah, you can come with us. I, uh... haven’t been very good at catching pokemon.
Vyrin: *snickers*
Annie: Q- quiet you…
Lyra wiggles excitedly as Annie takes out an empty pokeball.
Lyra: ((In honesty, I was quite surprised you didn’t try catching me immediately, being a trainer and all. I assure you; I’ll be quite easy to catch.))
Annie: Welcome to the team, Lyra!
Annie gently taps Lyra with the pokeball. The red light surrounds Lyra and recedes into the pokeball without a single shake.
***MP: Annie tending to Vyrin***
Annie quickly gets one of the antidotes out from her bag and tends to the cut on Vyrin’s arm. It’s small but noticeable, and Vryin makes an effort not to wince again.Annie: Are you alright?
***Evolution Graphic?***
The light engulfs Lyra and her form shifts; she evolves into a metapod!***Sprites: Lyra (metapod), Vyrin, Annie***
Lyra: ((Oh! Oh- Oh dear... Well, this is poor timing.)) *wiggle, wiggle* ((I do hate to be a bother, but I seem unable to move at the moment.))Vyrin looks up at Annie.
***BG: Average Route (route 2)***
After about 30 more minutes, the trees begin to spread out, and the route path is much more clear. They make it out of the forest and back onto Route 2. The way forward is straight and flat, and without all the trees, Annie can see the sky and Pewter City clearly.Lyra: ((There it is, just down the path.))
Annie sets Lyra down and stretches out her arms.
***Sprites: Lyra (metapod), Vyrin, Annie***
Annie: Aaah! It’s so nice to be back in the open.

Scene 2
***BG: Annie and co outside at table***
It seems to take no time at all to get from the edge of the Viridian Forest to Pewter City, so Annie heads to a hotel to arrange for a room to stay. After leaving the lobby, Annie sits at a grated table outside the door, lets her team out to relax in the sun, and then takes out her journal. Vyrin stretches out on a short stone wall while Scratch circles around Lyra. Scratch: ((Are you gonna evolve soon, Ms Lyra?))
Lyra: ((Oh ho, what a polite boy ^^. I do hope so; it’s rather dull not being able to move…))
***MP: Scratch and Lyra talking***
Lyra wiggles a bit to express some frustration, so Scratch stops circling and sits in front of her.Scratch: ((That’s okay! We’ll come to you, and when you evolve, you’ll feel a whole lot better!))
After a few moments, Vyrin hops onto a chair next to Annie and leans against the table to watch her write some things down in her notebook.
***MP: Annie and Vyrin talking***
Vyrin: What have you been writing anyway?Annie: Uh, just reminders, to-do lists, strategy notes. The Viridian gym is rock type, which all of you have disadvantages against. It may be our first badge, but we’re gonna have a tough time...
Vyrin: What do you have in mind then?
Annie: I’m going to teach you Metal Claw, and you’ll generally be able to out maneuver rock types. And now that we have Lyra, she can learn Confusion after she evolves, so you’ll have back up.
Vyrin: Hmm. Valid but risky. Lyra has little to no experience battling.
Annie closes the book and rubs her face with both hands.
Annie: It’s better than the first two plans I came up with, but I’ll keep thinking.
Scratch reaches up as much as far as his little body can go and leans against Vyrin’s chair.
Scratch: ((What’s a “gym”?))
Vyrin: ((Hmmm, how to explain this. Humans have this system of battles called the League Challenge, where they battle specific humans for a badge. If they get 8 badges, they can take on the best trainers in the region to get the title of Champion.))
Scratch: ((ooOOOOOooo. Are we gonna be champions?))
Vyrin: ((Don’t get your hopes up.))
Scratch: ((What about the gym? Are we gonna battle there?))
Vyrin: ((Yeah, yah see- Okay, hang on.)
Vyrin slides off the chair and takes a moment to explain gyms to Scratch.
Annie: Aw, beans, I forgot.
***Sprites: Annie, Phone***
Annie takes out her cell phone, realising that she forgot to call her mom earlier. The phone rings a couple of times, and the line picks up.Mom: Hey, Sunshine! You haven’t called in a little while. Did they open the gym yet? What’re you up to, kiddo?
Annie: Actually, I’m in Pewter.
Mom: What!? And you didn’t call me? T3T
Annie: Well, the gym was still closed, so I figured I go to the next closest gym and I got caught up in getting supplies and… uh, I forgot to.
Mom: It’s okay; you’re calling now and I love hearing from you. But really? They know the League Challenge is most popular in the summer. They really need to pin that Viridian leader down. They say he keeps going off where no one can find him, and it’s irresponsible of both him and the League.
A baby charmander chirps over the phone, and her mom is distracted for a moment.
Annie: Uh, did I call at a bad time?
Mom: Oh, no, no. It’s lunchtime; some of the little ones just get curious about the flip phone. But they might break it if I let ‘em hold it, haha. How are you getting along with Vyrin, by the way?
Annie: Well enough, I guess.
Mom: You don’t get along?
Annie: We… do? I don’t-
Annie glances over, but Vyrin is still talking to Scratch. Her shoulders scrunch and she sort of covers her mouth and the phone with her hand.
***SP: Annie whispering into phone***
Annie: I don’t think he likes me…Mom: Why are you whispering?
Annie: I-! I just… I don’t want him to hear me…
Mom: Is it that bad?
Annie: Nooo… It just feels like he’s just annoyed by everything I do.
Mom: He can be impatient. Oak said he once had a younger brother, so I was hoping he could help you train your other pokemon like he did during the [science name program]. Give you some tips, etc. etc. He has been helpful, right?
Annie: Well, yes. He helps me train Scratch, probably like he helped train other charmander with you and the other breeders.
Mom: Scratch huh? That’s adorable! You’ll certainly need more than Vyrin to take on Pewter’s gym.
Annie: I know. Oh, uh, Scratch is a ratatta, and there’s also Lyra, a caterp- Well, she’s a metapod now.
Mom: That’s wonderful, Annie! Your first team evolution! Make sure you keep her warm and out of combat for a time.
Annie: Yes, mom.
Mom: She’ll probably evolve again while you train for the Pewter gym, nudge nudge ;D
Annie: Hehe, mom, I can feel you winking.
Mom: Lunch is wrapping up, so I have to head out now. I’ll call you later, okay? Love yoooou!
Annie: Love you too, Mom. Bye.
Annie hangs up the phone and notices Vyrin and Scratch looking up at her.
Vyrin: Dr. [last name]?
Annie: Yeah.
Vyrin: So what didn’t you want me to hear?
Annie: ER-!? Nothing!?
Vyrin: Mm hm.
Annie: W-w-we should g-get training! Alright! Let’s go!
Annie suddenly gets up, grabs her things, and paces off quickly. Then she doubles back because she didn’t pick up Lyra.
Annie: Sory, Lyra… ><
Vyrin chuckles.

Scene 3
***BG: Average Route (variant: cloudy)***
Over the next few days, Annie trains for the Pewter City Gym. Like Ember before, Vyrin learns Metal Claw pretty quickly and trains on his own slashing at rocks and tree trunks. Scratch still has trouble with his moves, not really sure how to throw his light weight around. In the middle of training, Lyra finally evolves into a butterfree. Annie waits until the pokemon gets used to her new wings before teaching her the move Confusion, but in the meantime, she has the pokedex record Butterfree information. The skies are cloudy, and Vyrin in particular hopes it doesn't rain. Annie leaves the Pokemon Center after a quick PC check when a bug catcher boy runs up to her.
***Sprites: Annie, Vyrin, Anonymous***
Bug Catcher Boy: Hey! You’re a trainer right? Wanna battle?Annie: Ah, um, I-
Vyrin: Yes! Scratch could use the experience.
Annie glances at Vyrin who shrugs.
Vyrin: What? He does, and I respond faster than you.
Boy: Yeah?
Annie: Y-yeah, sure! Let’s battle!
The boy smiles and sends out a weedle. Annie tenses up at the sight of it, but Vyrin pats the side of her leg.
Vyrin: It’s just a spar. You have antidotes, remember?
Annie: I- I do.
***MP: Scratch trying to be scary***
Annie calls out Scratch. He shakes his fluffy head, realizes he’s been called out for a battle against another trainer, and beams excitedly at Annie. He faces the trainer’s weedle and poofs out his furto seem big. Somehow, he looks even less intimidating. Annie: Alright Scratch! Quick Attack! Like we practiced!
***MP: Scratch missing the quick attack on Weedle***
Scratch rushes forwards in a flash before the weedle has time to react. However, he isn’t quite on target and merely grazes the pokemon. The weedle wiggles away.BCB: Wrap him up with string shot!
The weedle spews its sticky white web at Scratch. The little ratatta tries to dodge but the web wraps around his front legs tripping him over.
BCB: Now! Poison Sting!
Annie: Move, Scratch!
Annie: Move, Scratch!
The weedle goes in with its pointed horn. Scratch manages to roll over and the weedle’s horn digs into the ground next to him, getting stuck. Scratch scrambles to his feet and looks at Annie for instructions.
Annie: Use tackle!
Scratch hops back, then lunges forward at the bug type. Though small, he manages to get enough momentum to knock into the weelde, unsticking it and knocking it out.
BCB: Oh darn! I thought I had that for sure.
Scratch ((I did it? I did it!))
Scratch turns around and rus up to Annie, but stops short when Annie backs away.
Scratch ((...Um?))
Scratch stares up at her, and Annie hesitantly reaches down to pat Scratch’s head. Scratch is surprised and delighted.
Annie: N-nice job, Scratch. We’ve still go some work to do on that Quick Attack, but I think you’re starting t-to get the hang of it.
Vyrin: See? Nothing to get so worried about.
Scratch nods at Annie while the BCB picks up his dazed weedle.
BCB: You did a good job. Hey! Are you taking on the gym with that charmander?
Annie: Y-yeah. Sooner of later.
BCB: He looks pretty strong, but you’ll never beat Brock with a fire type. Have you been on Route 22? You could find a mankey if you really wanted to.
Annie: Oh, really? I must’ve looked over it.
BCB: Yeah, it’s near the other side of the Viridian Forest on the way to Victory Road.
Annie: Ah. That’s why I overlooked it…
The BCB recalls the weedle and Annie recalls Scratch; the two trainers part ways, so Annie makes her way back to the Pokemon Center. Vyrin trots next to her.
Vyrin: Are we really going back through the forest?
Annie: Mmmmmm, I don’t really want to, but I’d feel far better with a mankey on the team…
Vyrin: You have plenty of antidotes if you do.
Annie: It’s my money; I’ll have as many as I deem necessary!
Annie pouts at Vyrin, and the charmander chuckles at her reaction.

Scene 4
***BG: Route 22***
Right next to Victory Road, Route 22 was a grassy stretch nestled in between the beginning of a mountainous area. The afternoon sun reflects off the small pond that sits in the middle of the road where a lone manky trains its moves on the rocks. Scrtch! Scrtch! The mankey uses Scratch against the stones, making shallow gashes along the surface. Eventually, it takes a break and drinks from the pond when suddenly Vyrin runs up to it and startles it with Growl!Annie: Get ready, Vyrin. Growl again!
Vyrin: Chaaaarr!
***BG: Vyrin and Victor facing off***
The mankey’s wide eyes narrow as it realizes it’s been challenged. It faces Vyrin and takes a swipe at him.Annie: Watch out!
Vyrin: I see ‘im!
Vyrin dodges and counters with ember. The mankey takes it and leers at Vyrin who flinches slightly at the hard gaze. The mankey takes the opening in Vyrin’s defence and jumps towards the charmader. Vyrin moves his feet to jump away when Annie yells to him.
Annie: Don’t! Wait for him to land; them duck and use metal claw!
Vyrin gets the message and waits.
***MP: Vyrin using metal claw on Victor***
When the Mankey lands, Vyrin digs into it with Metal Claw with enough force to knock the pokemon down. With that, Annie throws a pokeball that hits its mark! Pachoo! It goes. One wiggle, and another, and another less so. Click!Annie: We did it!
Annie runs over and picks up the mankey’s pokeball.
Vyrin: Yeah, we did. First real catch.
Annie: Oh, you >:1
Vyrin: Haha, couldn’t resist. We did it, and it’s fine.
Blue: Well, well! Funny meeting you out here, Mannie.
Vyrin: Aaaaand there goes the moment.
***BG: Blue posing with Ox and Jet***
Vyrin groans as Blue walks onto the route from the grass with a pidgey on his arm. As Annie puts away the pokeball, Blu’s pidgey glowers at Vyrin who returns the sharp glare. Ox runs up in front with his chest puffed out. Annie thinks they look like they’re posing for a magazine cover.***Sprites: Annie, Blue, Vyrin, Ox***
Annie: It’s… It’s Annie.Blue: I see you finally caught up. You’ll probably get a badge by the end of the summer. Don’t worry; take your time.
Annie: Um..., actually-
Vyrin: We just came back from Pewter.
Blue: Pewter!?
Blue’s eyes bulge for a moment, but he fake coughs and regains usual his cocky demeanor.
Blue: Erm, *ahem*! Pewter. Really? How’d, uh, how’d you pass me?
Vyrin: We didn’t have to come back for our pokedex.
Blue: Tsk.
Vyrin smirks.
Ox: Vyrin! Wipe that grin off your face and fight me, yah chump!
Ox starts marching forward, but Blue nudges the squirtle back with his foot.
Blue: He’s been going on and on about battling your charmander. How ‘bout it? Let’s go!
Vyrin: I’m game.
Annie: Well, a-alright, if you’re okay with it, Vyrin.
Blue: Get ready, squirt. We’re using strat Hard Shell Rush, got it?
Ox: Got it!
Annie: Hard shell wha…?
Blue: Oh, don’t worry about it. I’m gonna be champion soon; it’s pretty novice to just yell out moves your opponent can clearly hear.
Annie: …
Vyrin: Just focus on me, Annie.
Blue: Get goin’!
Ox: Yaaah!
Ox runs forward o his short legs and bum rushes Vyrin. Vyrin sees pretty easily and side steps out of the way.
Blue: Withdraw!
***BG: VS Blue***
The two trainers take places on opposite sides of the route with Vyrin and Ox taking similar positions in front of them.
***BG: Ox defending against Vyrin ember***
Annie: Okay, use ember!Blue: Withdraw!
Vyrin spews out the embers and the flames scatter around Ox who retreats into his shell. The flames bounce off his hard shell and light the nearby grass on fire.
Annie: Ah! No, uh-!
Vyrin: We’ll deal with it in a minute; it’s not gonna- OOF!
Blue: Helloooo, we’re battling. D’yah always talk in the middle ‘a things? Tough luck gettin’ badges that way.
Annie: Get him away from you and use Metal Claw.
Blue: Oh no you don’t! Ox, override. Dodge and get space!
While Ox took a moment to rub his chin, Vyrin jumps back before lunging forward to get momentum in his Metal Claw! Ox notices, but instead of following Blue’s instructions, he uses Withdraw and defends.
Blue: Hey! I said override!
Ox: I can take him!
Vyrin connects! The Metal Claw sends Ox in his shell spinning into a nearby rock. Crack! An impact dents the rock, and Ox spills out of his shell too dazed to continue battling.
Ox: Whoooooaaa is that all you got? Where’d all these stars come from?
Blue: Stubborn kid. I said move.
Blue frowns in disappointment and recalls Ox. He then casually wipes some hair out of his face and calls out the pidgey, Jet
Blue: Since we’re already battlin’, we might as well keep goin’. This new catch ‘a mine could use a good warm up.
Annie: I mean, uh, Vyrin?
Vyrin: I can keep goin’.
Blue: Alright, Jet. Let’s see what you remember. Strat Sandstorm!
Annie: Get ready to fire Ember!
Blue: That’s more like it. Well, aren’t you gonna send out another pokemon? You can’t just only have a charmander.
Vyrin gets up and gets out of the way while Annie, determined to at least finish this match, calls out Scratch and Lyra after that.
Blue: A good exercise, ey? Not too bad for a newbie, but Ox is gonna be up in arms for losing again. Hey, if you get in more practice, maybe we can have a real battle next time.
Annie: Er… sure, I guess.
Blue starts walking away slowly.
Blue: Oh, and going back to Gramp’s was just a small set back. You won’t pass me again, so sit back and enjoy the show, k? *winks*
Vyrin: ...Well that happened.
Annie: ...S-sorry…
Vyrin: Hey, yah can’t win ‘em all. Besides, he’s got some experience on you.
Lyra: ((The nerve of that young man! A “real battle”!? What was this if not a battle?))
Vyrin translates.
Annie: A training session, I suppose.
Lyra: ((Hmph, indeed! Next time we’ll be the one doing the showing. Isn’t that right, Scratch?))
Scratch: ((Yeah! We’ll beat him! We’ll beat him!))
Scratch circles around Annie and the team excited which can’t help but make Annie smile.
Annie: Ah, speaking of showing, we have a new teammate.
Annie: Um, hi.
Mankey: … *stares at her intently*
Annie: *nervous side glance* Um, I’m- I’m Annie. And. That’s Vyrin. And Scratch, and Lyra. I caught you so-
Mankey: >:1 *narrows his eyes, displeased*
Annie: Um!?
Vyrin: ((You gonna say somethin’?))
Mankey: -_- *huff and rolls his eyes. Crosses his arms annoyed*
Lyra: ((Hm? That’s unusual. Manky tend to be rather loud.))
Scratch: ((Hello! My name’s Scratch. You look really fluffy. I’m fluffy too. Nice to meet you!))
Mankey: …?
Vyrin: *to Annie* He’s not saying anything.
Annie: That’s fine. Maybe he doesn’t want to.
Mankey: ...!? *gives Annie a surprised grateful look*
Annie: But, um, I’d like to call you something other than just ‘Mankey’. Could I give you a nickname?
Mankey: >_> *shrugs indifferently*
Annie thinks for a bit, and her eyes drift to a sign a little bit down the route.
Annie: Well. We’re near Victory Road, sooo how about Victor?
Victor: u.u *nods agreeingly*
Annie: Welcome to the team, Victor.
Scratch: ((Is “Victory Road” one of the gyms?))
Vyrin: ((No. I’ll explain later, but we probably won’t get that far along anyway.))
Annie: How about we do some training, to get Victor used to us?
Vyrin: Sounds fine to me.
Lyra: ((Agreed!))
Annie has no trouble teaching Victor the moves Low Kick and Karate Chop in quick succession.
Scratch ((I’ll get there eventually. Right?))
Annie: Ah! No, uh-!
Vyrin: We’ll deal with it in a minute; it’s not gonna- OOF!
***MP: Ox using Tackle on Vyrin***
Ox tackles into Vyrin and knocks him to the ground.Blue: Helloooo, we’re battling. D’yah always talk in the middle ‘a things? Tough luck gettin’ badges that way.
Annie: Get him away from you and use Metal Claw.
***MP: Vyrin hitting Ox as Bubble***
Ox attempts to use Bubble right in Vyrin’s face, but Vyrin thwacks Ox in his chin, making the Bubble go up and spray away from him.
***MP: Jet and Vyrin squaring off***
Vyrin stays where he is and faces Blue’s pidgey. Blue: Alright, Jet. Let’s see what you remember. Strat Sandstorm!
Annie: Get ready to fire Ember!
***BG: Jet using Sand Attack on Vyrin***
This time the pidgey outmatches Vyrin’s speed. Vyrin manages to hit the flying pokemon with Ember, but the pidgey keeps its distance and overwhelms Vyrin with sand attacks. Finally it rushes in with quick attack and catches Vyrin completely off guard, knocking him down and defeating him. The pidgey flies back to Blue and perches on his arm.Blue: That’s more like it. Well, aren’t you gonna send out another pokemon? You can’t just only have a charmander.
Vyrin gets up and gets out of the way while Annie, determined to at least finish this match, calls out Scratch and Lyra after that.
***BG: Jet beating Scratch and Lyra***
Both of her pokemon are defeated by Blue’s pidgey... Blue recalls the pidgey, though Annie leaves all of her pokemon out. He fixes his hair and rolls his shoulders as if he was the one battling.Blue: A good exercise, ey? Not too bad for a newbie, but Ox is gonna be up in arms for losing again. Hey, if you get in more practice, maybe we can have a real battle next time.
Annie: Er… sure, I guess.
Blue starts walking away slowly.
Blue: Oh, and going back to Gramp’s was just a small set back. You won’t pass me again, so sit back and enjoy the show, k? *winks*
***BG: Annie checking on her pokemon***
Blue frowns as Annie stopped paying attention to him to make sure her pokemon are alright. He huffs, turns, and walks away down the route. Vyrin rubs the top of head as Annie tends to a bruise on Scratch’s side.Vyrin: ...Well that happened.
Annie: ...S-sorry…
Vyrin: Hey, yah can’t win ‘em all. Besides, he’s got some experience on you.
***Sprites: Lyra, Annie, Scratch, Vyrin***
Lyra’s wings flutter erratically in frustration.Lyra: ((The nerve of that young man!
***SP: Victor Solo***
Annie grabs the pokeball from her sash and lets the mankey out. The mankey is surprised but calms down pretty quickly once he realizes what’s going on.Annie: Um, hi.
Mankey: … *stares at her intently*
Annie: *nervous side glance* Um, I’m- I’m Annie. And. That’s Vyrin. And Scratch, and Lyra. I caught you so-
Mankey: >:1 *narrows his eyes, displeased*
Annie: Um!?
Vyrin: ((You gonna say somethin’?))
Mankey: -_- *huff and rolls his eyes. Crosses his arms annoyed*
Lyra: ((Hm? That’s unusual. Manky tend to be rather loud.))
***Sprites: Annie, Vyrin, Victor, Scratch***
Scratch circles happily around Victor like he often does.Scratch: ((Hello!
***BG: Scratch watching the others train***
In a few hours, Annie has Victor, Vyrin, and Lyra spar in preparation for the gym while Scratch watches from the side. Victor is a natural at battle, typing or not.Though excited for his friends, Scratch looks down at his small little paws and whispers a sad sigh. Scratch ((I’ll get there eventually. Right?))

Chap 4: Rockin’ Your World
The Pewter City Gym looks exactly as one would expect a rock type gym to look like; dusty and decorated with boulders like the inside of a cave. Gym trainers accept challenges on the smaller stages beyond the lobby as various levels of trainers come in to test their metal.
Annie: Watch out! Circle and use confusion!
Lyra ((An excellent idea!))
Lyra swoops around to the opposite side of the opponent’s geodude with an elegant grace as the more sluggish rock pokemon struggles to keep face with her.
Gym Trainer: Geodude! Turn around!
The geodude’s reaction time was too late, and Lyra’s eyes pulse with a pink glow. A similar pink glow pulses from the geodude who holds onto its head and curls into itself.
Gym Trainer: Geodude?
The pokemon does not respond to its trainer, so a referee blows his whistle.
Ref: That’s it! The win goes to the challenger!
Annie: Phew… That last attack was cutting it close. Nice job, Lyra.
Lyra: ((Naturally ^^))
Receptionist: Annie [Last name]?
A receptionist walks into the lobby and announces the name over an intercom.
Annie: Yes! Th-th-that’s me.
Annie calls from the training area and jogs over to the front desk
Receptionist: You’re up!
Annie looks around the stalagmite littered space, thinking of ways her opponent might use them against her. A referee sets up in the box to the right of the arena while the gym leader walks over to the other. He casually adjusts his orange and grey jacket, then waves over at Annie.
Annie tries to answer, but the words get stuck in her throat. She nods her head quickly instead and wrings the bottom of her shirt.
Brock: Nervous, eh? The first gym is always a bit nerve wracking, but your pokemon will feel that nervous energy too; try to relax a little. I’m Brock, the Pewter City gym leader. Since this is your first badge, you’ll be battling two of my pokemon. The battle is over when all of a team’s pokemon are unable to battle. Understand?
Annie nods again.
Brock: My Pokémon have rock hard defence and true-grit determination! Think you can beat us? Then show me your best!
Brock: Interesting choice. Let’s not stall then. Go! Tackle!
Annie: *tenses* Ah-!
Annie: S-sorry, I-
The geodude rushes in again. With quick reflexes, Vyrin manages to roll to the side dodging the attack.
Brock: You can’t converse in the middle of a battle! Geodude [nickname?], again!
Annie clutches her shirt and manages to yell out a command.
Annie: Move left and counter with metal claw!
Vyrin successfully side steps to the left and hits with his metal plated claw. The geodude grunts and moves back from Vyrin’s attack.
Brock: Defense Curl!
Annie: Keep up the Metal Claw! Break his defense!
A transparent greenish sphere appears around the geodude who crosses his arms around his face. Vyrin slashes with Metal Claw again and again, not letting the geodude have a moment to do anything but guard.
Annie: Don’t let up!
Brock: Try to move back!
The geodude tries to move away from the offensive charmander, but Vyrin just uses the momentum behind his swipes to follow forward. The Defense Curl flickers.
Brock: Not too bad after all, but let’s see how you handle your next opponent.
Annie: Dodge!
The onix’s tail curls around itself, lifts into the air, and comes down towards Victor. The calm mankey jumps to the right of the tail, far enough away that it can’t curl around him.
Annie: Now karate chop its tail.
Victor does so with a swift hard thwack! Onix recoils with a roar.
Brock: Don’t get too mad now, [onix nickname?] Use Rock Tomb!
The Onix glares and crashes his tail into the stalagmites scattered around the battlefield, so the chunks of rock fly towards Victor.
Annie: Take cover behind the mounds! Move and get in close!
Brock: Let ‘em hear you!
Annie: There! Use Low Kick!
Brock: Well! That’s it then! You’ve beaten the Pewter City Gym!
Brock recalls the onix as the referee blows a whistle and raises a flag towards Annie. Annie takes a moment to process, then looks at Victor.
Annie: You did it? Victor! You did it!
Victor: ^w^
Annie gets some light applauds from someone in the audience as she goes out into the field to meet Victor. Brock also comes to the center.
Brock: Congratulations!
Annie: Yeah, he did a good job, didn’t he?
Annie pats Victor on the head, and Victor blushes.
Brock: I’ll be honest. I wasn’t expecting you to beat me on your first try; a lot of people don’t. The gym trainers say you did pretty well, but I had my doubts when you tensed up during your charmander’s battle.
Annie: …Yeah…
Annie rubs the back of her neck and lowers her eyes as he says that. Brock puts his hands on his hips, still as casual as ever.
Brock: On the other hand, you were clearly prepared for the battle with a fighting type and your charmander’s metal claw. But you weren’t ready for the battle. Freezing up like that could put your pokemon in a dangerous situation. Try battling more trainers than wild pokemon.
Annie: R-right. I’ll work on that. Definitely!
A gym trainer brings a new open badge case with the Boulder badge already inside.
Brock: Here’s the Boulder Badge, a complimentary case, and a little gift of my own.
***BG: Lyra dodging a rock throw***
A couple of people gather around the battle in progress as Lyra just barely dodges out of the way of an incoming Rock Throw.Annie: Watch out!
***Sprites: Lyra, Annie***
Lyra flutters over to Annie and does a twirl.Annie: Phew… That last attack was cutting it close. Nice job, Lyra.
Lyra: ((Naturally ^^))
Receptionist: Annie [Last name]?
A receptionist walks into the lobby and announces the name over an intercom.
Annie: Yes! Th-th-that’s me.
Annie calls from the training area and jogs over to the front desk
Receptionist: You’re up!
***BG: Pewter Gym***
The receptionist leads Annie to the main stage. Though obviously bigger than the training decks, the main stage felt even bigger than Annie expected. Rows of mostly empty bleachers rose above and circled the stage for the safety and convenience of the audience. Annie looks around the stalagmite littered space, thinking of ways her opponent might use them against her. A referee sets up in the box to the right of the arena while the gym leader walks over to the other. He casually adjusts his orange and grey jacket, then waves over at Annie.
***Sprites: Annie, Brock***
Brock: Hello there! Welcome to the Pewter City Rock Type Gym! This is your first gym badge right?Annie tries to answer, but the words get stuck in her throat. She nods her head quickly instead and wrings the bottom of her shirt.
Brock: Nervous, eh? The first gym is always a bit nerve wracking, but your pokemon will feel that nervous energy too; try to relax a little. I’m Brock, the Pewter City gym leader. Annie nods again.
Brock: My Pokémon have rock hard defence and true-grit determination! Think you can beat us? Then show me your best!
***BG: VS Brock***
Brock tosses a geodude out onto the stage, and Annie sends out Vyrin first. He stretches out for a moment before taking on a more battle ready expression. Brock puts up a hand to his chin thoughtfully.Brock: Interesting choice. Let’s not stall then. Go! Tackle!
Annie: *tenses* Ah-!
***BG: Geodude ramming into Vyrin***
The geodude barrels into Vyrin and pushes him back. He winces but manages to stay no his feet skidding back towards his trainer. When he stops, Vyrin angrily turns his head around to face Annie.***SP: Pissed off Vyrin***
Vyrin: Annie!Annie: S-sorry, I-
The geodude rushes in again.
***SP: Vyrin eye glimmer and BG: Vyrin smashing through Defence Curl***
With a glimmer in his eye, Vyrin targets the weak spot, burrows through with his sharpened claws, and breaks through the green barrier! It shatters in a quick burst of energy; the geodude wails and falls onto his back unconscious, dizzy swirls in his eyes.Brock: Not too bad after all, but let’s see how you handle your next opponent.
***MP: Onix emerge from pokeball***
Brock recalls the geodude and takes out his second pokeball. Pachoo! The red stream of light grows and grows larger and longer; emerging from the light curls a large rough onix. Annie recalls Vyrin and takes a hold of Victor’s pokeball. While trying to toss it out she almost drops the ball, fumbles to catch it, and holds it steady in both hands. Brock chuckles softly, and Annie blushes brightly. Victor still pops out. He gazes up at the onix, blinks a couple of times, and swipes his nose with a finger. ***MP: Victor and Onix square off***
Brock: I see you did your research; looks like your mankey’s ready for a good fight, but type advantages will only get you so far. [nickname? Or just Onix] Use bind!Annie: Dodge!
***BG: Victor taking cover from Rock Tomb***
Victor swivels around a nearby stalagmite; the rocks smash against the ground and the stony pillar that Victor hides behind. When there’s a break in the flying rubble, Victor moves forward and again until he’s right nearby the onix. Brock: Let ‘em hear you!
***MP: Onix screech/ Victor covers ears***
At that, the onix lets out a loud Screech! Victor stops in his tracks and covers his ears. Onix then smashes his head down to Tackle, but Victor just dives out of the way.Annie: There! Use Low Kick!
***BG: Victor kicking Onix head***
Victor regains his senses and slides into a Low Kick right into Onix’s large rough edged head. His huge head knocks into another stalagmite, and Onix yelps as the rest of his body recoils with him. Brock raises his eyebrows pleasantly surprised.Brock: Well! That’s it then! You’ve beaten the Pewter City Gym!
Brock recalls the onix as the referee blows a whistle and raises a flag towards Annie. Annie takes a moment to process, then looks at Victor.
***Sprites: Annie, Victor, Brock***
Victor: …! *looks back at Annie excited*Annie: You did it? Victor! You did it!
Victor: ^w^
Annie gets some light applauds from someone in the audience as she goes out into the field to meet Victor. Brock also comes to the center.
Brock: Congratulations!
Annie: Yeah, he did a good job, didn’t he?

A gym trainer brings a new open badge case with the Boulder badge already inside.
Brock: Here’s the Boulder Badge, a complimentary case, and a little gift of my own.
Brock takes a TM CD out of his back pocket and holds it out to Annie. She takes it and reads the shiny text on the side, “Rock Tomb”.
Brock: I suggest you challenge Misty next, now that you’ve tested the waters, haha! Take it from me, she likes to be fast and flashy, and you won’t always find a type advantage so easily.
Annie: I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you for the advice.
