COME ON AND SLAM, AND WELCOME TO SPACE JAM
Space Jam is Splatoon meets NaNoWriMo: a team creative challenge, hosted every few months throughout the year for members of Canalave Library. Team up with fellow fan creators to create, earn points, and snag sweet, sweet swag!
How It Works:
Every Space Jam will have a different challenge. Read the rules carefully to understand what’s going down! (The rules for this Space Jam are after this explanation.) At the end of the rules, you’ll find a Google Form sign-up sheet, which will be active for one month. Simply fill out this sheet, choose a team, and wait for the month to roll over, which is when the session will begin.
Also, yes! There will be teams! This is where the session “theme” comes in. Every session has a different versus attached to it. Aqua and Magma, hot dogs and hamburgers, and so on and so forth. This theme has nothing to do with the challenge and everything to do with you: simply choose which one you prefer to be sorted onto a team. (Note: If you’re torn, the team builds will be public throughout the sign-up sheet. You can request to move to the other team at any point by contacting the session mod, no questions asked. Additionally, if one team has quite a few more players on it than another, you may be tapped to shift over to the other team to balance everything out.)
Your team is the most important part of every Space Jam. They’re your source of encouragement, but more importantly, you’ll need to work with them in order to win. Space Jam runs on points: the more you earn, the more likely you’ll get sweet, sweet swag at the end, so you’ll need to coordinate with your teammates to earn the most points. To do this, you’ll be given a special channel right on the server that only your team and the session mod can see. Use it to talk shop, keep each other’s morales up, and come up with your game-winning strategies.
Good luck!
THIS SESSION:
The Theme
Mesprit: “Oh gosh! Oh gosh! It’s time for our first Space Jam! Azelf, isn’t this exciting?”
Azelf: “Awwwwwww yeeeeeeeah. Nothin’ gets my soulstone pumpin’ like a good competition. What’s the theme this time, Mesprit?”
Mesprit: “Well, it says here that it’s Team Aqua vs. Team Magma.”
Azelf: “Team Aqua vs. Team Magma, huh? Aren’t those the two groups of goons who messed around on Jirachi’s turf?”
Mesprit: “Yeah, but maybe we shouldn’t be too harsh about them. They did it with the best intentions. They just … didn’t know you couldn’t live if you threw off the balance of nature.”
Azelf: “Too sweet for your own good as always, Mesprit. Well, I know what I’d go for. It’s a no-brainer! More land is where it’s at!”
Mesprit: “Huh? But more water makes more sense! Everything needs water to live!”
Azelf: “What good’s drinkin’ gonna do if you can’t stand, dummy?!”
Uxie: “Aren’t you two … I don’t know. Backwards?”
Mesprit and Azelf: “What do you mean?”
Uxie: “You know. Red and blue. Blue and pi—you know what? Never mind.”
So what’ll it be? Make a splash with the ocean-faring Team Aqua or side with the ground-breaking Team Magma? Sign up and show your allegiance!
The Rules
It’s November, and you know what that means! NANOWRIMO. In this session, you’ll have 30 days to create something—anything—and reach your goal.
In the sign-up sheet, you’ll have a spot where you can state what your goal is. This goal should not be something you can do in a day. (After all, what’s the point in challenging yourself if it’s not a challenge?) Once the session begins, simply work as hard as you can to reach that goal. Most of the points you and your teammates will be able to earn will come from simply reaching your goal, but you can also earn points from check-ins (or periods during every weekend wherein you post how much progress you’ve made). Side points are, as always, also offered and may additionally tip the scales in your team’s favor.
Note: For writing projects, goals will be determined by word count. (You can define what that word count is, but to make things super-simple, please plan on a word count goal.) For each check-in, your current word count will be compared to your stated goal, and if you’ve made significant progress (about 20% of your goal), you’ll earn check-in points for your team. Programming goals will be determined by the number of lines of code/percentage of goal. Art projects and other creators will be determined either by the number of art pieces drawn/things created or the amount of progress made, artist’s choice. (If your goal is amount of progress made, then any noticeable difference will be enough to earn the check-in points for your team.)
The Points
For this session, you may earn points through the following methods:
- Reaching Your Goal: 100 points for each member who reaches their goal; 500 points if and only if the entire team reaches their goals
- Team Goal: If neither team can reach 100% of their goals (as in, one or more team members is unable to reach their goal), 500 points will go to the team with the most members who’ve completed.
- Word Count Cumulative: 500 points will go to the team with the highest cumulative word count between its members.
- Check-In Goals: 10 points per teammate who has made significant progress in a week. (Note: For writers and programmers, this means hitting your daily goal every day. For artists and other creators, see above.) 100 points go to the team whose members have made the most progress.
- Bonus: Reviewing: Record a review for the Reviewing Relay to earn 10x its worth for your team in Space Jam.
- Bonus: Advertising: Earn 10 points for every ad you place (forum signature, Tumblr post, etc.) for the CL Discord and forums.
-- Note #1: All ads must adhere to site rules. That is to say, do not spam ads, especially if there are rules against it! Only create and share ads according to the rules of the place you choose.
-- Note #2: If creating a Tumblr ad, only the original post will count. That is, reblogs of Tumblr ads will not count, and each ad you post must be unique in order to count. (So please no copying and pasting multiple times!)
-- Note #3: Spamming ads via PM or DM will be considered a violation to note the first. If you try to convince others to join, please do so by inviting them to the server, casually mentioning the server in normal conversation, or any of a number of things that are somewhat less weird than suddenly telling people about a server in what sounds like an ad. - Bonus: Recruitment: Earn 10 points for every new member you recruit to the CL.

Prizes
What’s a good competition without a few prizes? The winning team (that is, the team with the highest points at the end of the session) will automatically get the following swag:
- A feature for one of their works on our Tumblr, as well as a shout-out on our forums’ newsfeed
- If you write, an accompanying banner for your featured fic (which can also be used as a forum signature)
- A guaranteed review for one of your works from the session mod
- A fan drabble of their project (also written by the session mod)
- A shiny role and role color on both the Discord and the forums until the next Space Jam (Note: Color and name of the role will be determined by your team.)
Note: If you would like to suggest more prizes or offer your services to create prizes for others, fire away! The prize sheet will be updated throughout this session. Please note/rest assured that unless you specify that you’re willing to do this for every session, the prize list will be for only this session.
Additionally, we will be featuring a project (of the creator’s choice) on our Tumblr by anyone who completes their goals for the session.
