This is a piece for the Extravaganza for GingerDixie, based off ofPrompt number three: A very strong bond
LOCKET
I walk the cold path alone. My eyes dart across the snowy plains as my feet trudge through the snow.
Not long now. I hate the cold, though.
I look back at my grey and white striped tail.
I hate being albino. It’s embarrassing, made worse by the snow.
I suddenly feel something slam into my nose. I immediately growl.
“Sorry bro, didn’t see you there being white an’ all,” a Krookodile grins at me.
“Claws, stop it. I hate it. Please stop picking on me for it!” I shout back, trying not to cry, “I get beaten up enough at school for it without coming home and seeing you!”
“Huh? Oh, little brother, it’s fine. Heh, you’d be good in the snow if you wanted to hunt,” Claws rubs my head playfully. However, I am not in the mood for his games, and push him away, “Aw, you upset, little Sandile?”
“I am not a Sandile!” I scream, storming off; he plods behind me, grinning. “Quit following me!”
“Not until you tell me what really happened, bro,” he says, catching up with me and scooping me up in his hands. “So, what happened?”
“They… they hit me with vine whip… called me a Snokorok…” I sniffle, “and then took my locket of mum and dad… and it’s not fair…” I cry into him.
“I see.” He cradles me. “Hey, you are young - it’s okay to be thirteen and still want to have a bed-time bottle and story…” he cringes saying it but tries to hide it.
“No… no, it’s not…” I whisper back.
“Heh. Hey, who needs those freaks? We got each other and, well, here.” He takes off his own locket. “You need this.” He puts it in my hand and curls it up. “And this.” He dumps a huge pile of snow on my head and bursts into laughter.
“Why?” I say, angry, but suddenly start to laugh. “You got some on your nose,”
“Huh? I did?” he replies, looking at his nose in the most awkward way he can. “I don’t see it.”
I dump a pile of snow on his snout and burst into laughter.
“Okay, that’s it!” he says, laughing, and dunks me head first into the snow.
“Hey that’s not fair!” I laugh. “Hey, brother? This is mine…” I look at the locket.
“Yep, I beat them up for it back. I guess you owe me,” he whispers, sticking his tongue out at me. “So let’s go in and have soup - a big pot of it - and then hot berry juice and marshmallows while we watch some battles on the jumbo screen. Sound good?”
“Yeah!” I shout, jumping up excitedly. “Brother? Will I ever be a normal… mon… like you?”
“Nope, you will always be my white little brother, but you know what? That’s perfect. I don’t want you looking like me. You would ruin my looks.” He grins.
“Yeah, at least I am not bright red and stick out like a sore thumb in these mountains!” I smirk back.
“Yep. Being albino here is nice, and well… your eyes look pretty scary in the snow. Should dress you as a Snokorok and scare the shit out of those bullies. Sound good?”
“Yeah! We will get them back tomorrow!” I shout back, pleased.
“Okay then,” he says, picking me up and cuddling me, “let’s go inside.”
I squeeze the locket in my hand tightly as he takes me inside.
I love you brother, you are all I have left… and without you… I would have to face this world alone. Thank you for being here for me, even if you are a jerk most of the time… some of the time… none of the time… I love you so much.
