Note: So number four will be for Manchee and to do the prompts. " Taking a typical, everyday job/profession and adapting it to the Pokémon world", "Someone adopting and loving a Pokémon that is typically viewed as "less-than" or "unoriginal" or "trash", and "Being in love with someone who is with someone else". For context, this story will be set in Yveshia so while unown (English) is canonically considered universal the local languages also tend to show in as well. I won't have the translations listed below due to some feedback but most if not all can be simply understood by looking at the sentence and the characters.
A big thank you and shout out to Cavespider_17 for helping in the localization of the German that will be used.
With all that said, I hope you all enjoy!
It was dark. The smell of metal and dirt permeated the five feet wide, nine feet tall room. Odd objects hung from some sockets with a small vent, letting in the only light that could be seen, at the base of this thing. The noise of something twisting, metal upon metal, filled the little chamber despite it being done rather quietly. The vent plate finally was released from the screws and pulled off, making louder clanking noises till it came to rest on some ground. A small figure popped his rather large head in and pulled himself through the newly made whole and carefully lowered himself to the ground, having to drop a little way due to how short he was.
“Okay,” the figure muttered to himself. He reached into a tool belt and pulled out something and twisted its nob. The small emura crystal in a vial with an electrical twist activator shined a faint little yellow light in the little area. The figure’s munchlax body was revealed in the light. The munchlax strapped the emura light stick to his belt and proceeded to start climbing up the plugs of some dusty interface to get a better view.
“Siehst du er, Berry?” A voice called from on the other side of the hole.
“Noch nicht Opa,” the boy shouted to the hole’s direction. He started looking around once more at all the large wires with plugs about as big as him. Hmm…where is it? Maybe higher? The boy climbed higher on the plug console until he was about two feet from the roof of the large electrical box. Where is it? There’s an inconsistent or worn out plug connection somewhere, so which of the plugs is doing i-…wait… The boy squinted his eyes as he peered closer at one particular plug in the top right corner. Carefully, he reached to the plug but before manipulating its position called out. “Opa! I’m going to test to see if it’s this one. Check the outputs.”
“Alright Berry,” the voice replied and after about a minute said, “whenever you’re ready, Enkel.”
Berry started pulling the plug out of its socket. This is really stuck in there. Firmly placing his foot higher for extra push power, Berry aligned himself next to it and pushed out from the wall, finally starting to make traction. He quickly returned to his safer position once it was loose enough and finally finished unplugging it, letting it fall to the ground below with a thud. “Did it cut the one we want?” Berry asked, hoping he was correct in his educated guess.
“Ja,” the voice said with a gleeful tone and Berry took a breath of relief.
“Good,” Berry said aloud, as he started climbing down as someone reached in to pull the unplugged plug through the hole. Once his feet were on the ground, Berry leaped to the hole, pulled himself up, and crawled himself through it, falling forwards and landing on his back.
A few blinks came from his eyes due to the brightness of the room.
“Fühlst du dich gut, Berry?” Berry’s eyes looked up as a figure walked in front of the light’s origin. The shadow of a tall mon covered his face as something like a pincer lowered down.
Berry gave a nod and accepted the pincer pull up. “So do we know which one it is?” Berry asked, looking into the green eyes of a grey scizor.
“Ja,” the scizor replied with a proud smile, patting Berry on the head. “I’ll place the order wiring since we know the worn out one. I’ll finish up with the benefactors, so wait outside for me Berry.”
The munchlax gave an understanding nod and obeyed. After marching outside, Berry sat down on the wooden steps of the powerhouse, resting his head on his hands as he waited. Today worked out well, He thought with a smile as he pulled the goggles off his head and looked down at them, We found the issue, so the powerhouse should get fixed sooner. I’m sure Opa can handle that. I mean, it’s a lot of work and well I’m still young. Why I’m just spotting the problems rather than fixing them for now. Berry’s eyes lowered slightly as he stared at the wooden step below him rather than the goggles. I wish I could help him with the big stuff…but I’m still too small and inexperienced right now.
Suddenly, he heard what sounded like some roughhousing. He looked up to see a bunch of the town kids partaking in brawls and fighting competitions. He let out a sigh as he watched all the tough boys fighting and firing moves with such precision and strength that amazed the watchers and younger kids.
A sigh escaped his mouth as his eyes went back to the goggles. I know the path of an electrician mon isn’t well…the most popular, known about, or even used in the world due to power being mainly synergy but it is useful. Like Opa. He helps the town so much by himself even before I came along and I became his apprentice and even his Enkel when I was three. His eyes looked back at the group of kids messing around. It’s okay I guess. Just knowing I’m making a difference is enou- he stopped as his eyes fell upon one of the kids there. It was a nice buneary girl that was standing off at the side of the wall, watching the battles of the older kids with what looked like a little fright. She’s here? Berry said with surprise in his head as he got up and walked over to the group. Carefully, he tried to get through the group to talk to “her”. Sadly, some of the younger kids didn’t enjoy their view blocked and started to push him out of the way.
“Hey!” he shouted, pushing back but was pushed away, into the fighting area. “Huh?” he looked around as a dewott landed near him from a direct hit from a thunderbolt.
He gritted his teeth as he got up weakly. “Not going, to lose yet,” He stuttered, falling to a knee.
“Hey, you alright?” Berry asked, helping the mon from falling over.
The dewott didn’t reply but merely snarled at two mons that were smirking at them. “Heh,” a raichu laughed, “Du solltest deiner mutter nach hause gehen – Dummkopf!” The two laughed, as the dewott snarled trying to lunge at them.
“Nein,” Berry said, keeping the mon from going and shaking his head “You can barely stand. Sie sollten diese Idioten ignorieren.” The dewott’s was about to protest but caved in at the reality that he couldn’t win. His head fell as Berry helped the mon down and started getting some medicine.
“Memme,” one of the bullies said as they walked away, the group of younger kids following them.
The dewott was quiet, letting Berry bandage his arm. His pride was hurt as he stared up at the sky depressed.
“There,” Berry said with a smile as he let go of the arm. “All treated.”
The dewott looked at it and moved it a little before nodding. “Vielen Dank.”
“Keine problem,” Berry answered with a nod, helping the mon to his feet. “Tschüss, Ernst.” Berry waved as the mon left with a weaker wave. Berry looked around for the girl that had brought him over, to begin with, but let out a sigh as he realized she was gone.
“Berry,” his Opa called out, surprising the little munchlax. The old scizor walked over with a curious expression on his face. “Berry, I thought you were going to wait at the steps. What are you doing all the way over here?”
“Uhm…” Berry started rubbing one of his arms and blushing a little. “I thought I saw someone I’ve been wanting to talk to.”
“Oh? What kind of someone?” The scizor leaned in a little and Berry tried to look to the side to try and hide his embarrassment. However, this action only made it easier to figure out. “Ah, I see.” The scizor nodded with a little smirk on his face.
“Opa!” Berry shouted, his blush now completely covering his face. He pulled his orange lens goggles over his eyes and sulked.
The scizor let out a hefty laugh as he patted Berry on the head, making him even more embarrassed. “Well, let’s head on home.” He said, starting to walk down the road as Berry followed behind. After they had gone a little way, the scizor glanced back at Berry, who was still sulking with his goggles on. “Well, tell me then. What about this girl you like?”
Berry grumbled but decided to answer. “Well, she’s a buneary for one thing. I’ve seen how she acts and all. Everyone likes her at least at the local school. She’s very outgoing and friendly, in fact…well…she has nice ears too.” Berry started to feel a little cheesy saying all these things, let alone to his Opa. Thankfully, it seemed that his Opa respected that Berry was feeling awkward and was listening instead of his earlier jest. Berry slowly become laxer and started going on all the reasons why he liked this girl and had wanted to ask her to hang out with him.
“So why don’t you?” The scizor asked. Berry stopped, leading to the scizor to stop as well. “Berry?” he asked, and Berry looked at him.
“Well…” he moved a little dirt with his toe and looked down at the ground. “She’s so popular so…I don’t think she’d care to get to know me.”
“Well now, that’s not even trying. Berry,” the scizor walked over and patted the little munchlax’s back. “You’re a little lad right now. It’s near the time where you will see a lady you find nice and well, when you think about it, perhaps asking her to be friends would be a good start.”
“But I don’t know how to talk to schönen Mädchen, Opa,” Berry pointed out and his Opa gave a little laugh.
“Talking to hübsche Mädchen is like talking to any other Mädchen. You see Berry,” The scizor got on a knee and pointed to Berry’s head and tapped it with his pincer, “Mädchens like a Junge like you.”
“Like me?” Berry asked, pointing to himself.
“Ja, Jungen like you. You see berry, you have ein gutes herz. A good heart. Mädchens like that in a Junge.” He got up and started walking. “Do something good for her. Be her friend and show her who you are Berry.” He looked down the pathway and started to head down it. “Anyways, let’s hurry back to Oma. She probably has supper ready for us Jungen, Ja.”
Berry nodded with a smile and followed. Vielen Dank, Opa, Berry thanked in his mind. I’ll make sure to do something nice for her and be friends.
Another day and another bit of work, at least for his Opa, since well Berry wasn’t ready for the replacing of cable yet. So today was his chance. He got up early that morning, got his chores done, did all his errands for Oma, and headed over to where all the town kids would go to school at around a quarter before noon.
Hmm…Berry sat down on the steps as he waited for the school to break for midday. Strangely, it didn’t seem to let out, not even half an hour past noon. Berry still sat there, waiting for the kids to let out so he could talk to her. Humming to himself, Berry thought about what he would say. Should I ask to be friends once I learn her name or should I try and get to know more about her for things? Probably the latter, that way I can make something nice for her if I can go furth-
“Leave me alone!” Ernst’s voice shouted from around the corner to a little opening between some wooden buildings.
Cautiously, Berry walked over there to see Ernst cornered by the same bullies once more. Berry shot into the alley shouting, “Ihr hältst!” He got in the way, separating them from an already beat up Ernst.
“Berry?” Ernst said, holding his arm. The bandage Berry had tied on it before had been ripped and a huge cut now resided upon it.
Berry turned to look at the mean kids. “Why are you attacking him anyways? What did he do?”
“He challenged us to a fight again and lost. Heh, so we’re making sure he pays up for the loss.” The electabuzz smirked at a scowling Berry. “Now out of the way, boy.”
“Warten,” Berry insisted.
“Why should we?” the other demanded. “He owes us 10 Ylotel for losing to me.”
Berry gave an annoyed sigh. He quickly pulled out ten little Ylotel coins. “Hier,” Berry said walking over and shoving them into the mon’s hand. “Jetzt lass ihn in Ruhe.”
The two looked at each other and then back to Berry. “Heh, you’re smart, unlike that dummy over there.”
Berry didn’t reply as the two walked off, pleased they got the money they were owed. The munchlax turned around and started to treat Ernst once more. The dewott was silent as Berry applied a little bit of healing powder and new bandaging. “It isn’t permanent, so you should probably have the local doctor look at it.” Berry gave him a smile, but the boy just looked away. “What’s wrong?”
“…Nothing, thanks for saving me again Berry.” The boy got up and gave him a nod.
Berry nodded back with a smile. “Take care. You sure you don’t want me to help you get there?”
“I’ll manage. I’m already in your debt more than once and all. I’ll make sure to pay you back.”
Berry gave a nod and said, “Sure, just don’t rush yourself.” Berry waved as the guy started leaving. Quickly, Berry put all his stuff back into his backpack and started heading out when suddenly he heard someone shout. “Ernst!” Berry shot to the wall of the building and peered over to see Ernet being hugged by someone. By…her. Berry’s eyes widened at seeing how worried she looked. Worried for the mon he had just helped.
He took his backpack off and let it fall to the side. He rested his back on the wall, just lost for words or what to do. Something inside felt…horrible. Nein, he assured himself, Maybe they’re just friends. Berry looked around the corner but to his dismay, she was nuzzling his neck and he was rubbing her head. Oh… Berry didn’t know what he was feeling. All he knew what whatever this feeling was…was that it felt bad. A few tears formed as all the hopes he had had just been dashed.
“Woo mon,” Werner muttered to himself, rolling his scizor neck. “Was a pretty hard day. Hope Berry and Oma have a nice meal ready for a hungry mon like me, heh.” He rolled his arms and buzzed his old wings a little as he neared the house. He was about to go inside when he suddenly heard a little noise. Huh? Is that sniffling? Apparently, it was coming from the roof.
Oh, I see…Junge. He hoped he was wrong but he decided to check anyways. Quietly, he walked to the side of the house and climbed up the boards, taking the same path that someone smaller would take. Once at the top, sure enough there he was. Berry, on the roof near the trap door to his room, he low and sniffling.
“…Berry,” Werner announced in a soft tone. The munchlax didn’t change his position just stayed there sniffling to himself. Werner walked over and sat next to Berry. The goggles obscured Berry’s eyes. “Berry,” he started softly, “What happened? I thought you were going to introduce yourself to he-”
“She already has someone,” Berry bluntly said. Werner looked forwards as Berry went on. “And it was the mon I told you about. Ernst, one of the schoolboys…he…he was with her. I helped him twice and…” Berry gave many more sniffles.
“There, there,” Werner said, putting his pincer on Berry and pulling him close to the side. “I’m sorry, Berry. I know it’s hard but I’m happy you were able to help them.”
“But…” Berry started to tear up under his goggles.
“I know it’s not easy knowing someone didn’t choose you but Berry.” Werner slowly moved Berry to face him and moved the goggles off his teary amber eyes.
“You were a good Junge to them. I’m sure they’ll never forget that. There will be other Mädchen that come into your life. Not all will love you but you can befriend more than you can give your love to. Berry,”
The little munchlax looked back at him with sad eyes.
“With a good heart like yours, …you’ll find someone to love you one day. Till then, you keep being the good boy that you are.” He wiped the tears from Berry’s eyes and gave him a hug. “What makes a good heart Berry is a good person, Berry, and even if you don’t feel it now someday you will see just how much you mean to those around you. We are electrician mons. We don’t look for praise in our craft but take pride in what we do. And well, that just makes the ones that show us their gratitude that much more meaningful, Ja?”
One last sniffle escaped Berry's nose before he replied with, “Ja, Opa.” Berry gave a nod as he composed himself. The little munchlax slowly started to hug him back. “Vielen Dank, Opa.”
“Ich gefülhe stolz auf dich, Berry. So let’s go in and tomorrow I’ll take you out for a treat.” Berry’s eyes lit up at the sound of the reward. “Now, come let’s not keep Oma waiting.”
Werner headed down while Berry looked up at the starry sky. Tomorrow…I’ll be their friend. He stood up and pulled the goggles off of his head. He remembered when he first got them. How big his smile was when Opa gave him it on his fifth birthday and said he’d raise him as an electrician. “That is what I want,” He said with a smile as he looked up. “To be like Opa. To help mons here in Yveshia…and maybe one day. In the world.”
“Well, they’d call you Berry the Bountiful.” Werner grabbed Berry from behind and put him on his shoulders. The two laughing.
“Don’t make fun Opa.” Berry requested, looking down to his Opa with a smile.
“Who is making fun?” Werner stated patting Berry on the head. “I got permission from Oma that you can come with me.”
“Come with you?” Berry tilted his head in confusion.
“Well, to help me implement the cables. You’re growing up well, Berry; it is time to reward that. So tell me, you want to come?”
Werner looked up at Berry who hugged the head saying over and over, “I love you Opa.”
“Heh, I love you too Berry.” The scizor started for the climb down while Berry put on his goggles with a big smile on this time.
