Prologue - Sunset
The gorgeous sun started to set on the plains of route nine. The air simmered and the glowed a soft orangey-purple. The thick grass swayed in the wind, allowing it to form a dance. Occasionally, the grass brushed against Colin’s nose, making him sneeze. His wispy black Luxio mane flopped over his eyes, and covered the red and yellow iris. His nose twitched as the plants swished around. His black and blue fur merged together in places like the horizon where the sea touches the sky. The coal black parts of his fur were soft and thick, whereas the blue parts were much shorter, and velvety. With a sigh he rolled over, and let his belly face the sky. With a paw he scratched his stomach, and let his tail hover in the air for a moment before letting it rest on the floor.
While Colin lay, relaxing, in the grass, a young Haunter floated above him. His sleek body created a slim shadow which wouldn’t scare anyone, even if he tried. His smile widened as he watched his friend try and swipe at him playfully with his claws. His eyes shone in the up and coming moonlight. His purple skin looked almost scaly. Each segment was dented with cuts and bruises, all of which he would claim to have no idea how he obtained.
Behind him, a Durant ran around, darting in between the flowers before leaping out and playfully trying to pinch him. Her silver body shone as the sun faded to the moon. The cool night air made her feel more comfortable than in the day.
“Beau’iful day ain’t it, Don?” he whispered, closing his eyes.
“Yah tis. Tis a beau’iful night like,” the Haunter replied, floating down beside him. His claws sharpened and his purple body started to blend into the darkening sky, “Ain’t it gonna be your time to go ‘ome soon, Col?”
“Yah. Ya know me parents no like it when I’m out past sunset. Even though they know I’m wiv you.” Colin rolled back over and shook his fur, forcing all the grass to come tumbling off.
“Vik! Vik, ya gonna ‘ave to get goin’ soon. Ya know ‘eatmor are out at night more than t’ day. ‘Sides, ya parents will worry ‘nd all,” Donald said, sneaking up on the Durant.
“Huh?” she responded, “Oh, I guess. Migrating here from route twenty-eight has really messed my parents up. They are so paranoid now.”
“I guess n’ all,” Colin interrupted, “Eh, ya can’t stay out a little longer? I mean, it not like we gonna get ‘nd trouble or nothin’. Like when do ‘umans even come ‘ere anyway?”
“Ya be right Col. I mean, route nine ain’t on a main path or nothin’,” Donald added.
“I guess you are right.” Vikki lay her head on the ground.
The area started to get darker as the clouds drafted over the moon.
“Aww yah, this gonna be ‘nd ‘some nigh’ like,” Colin chirped up, “Just yah ‘n us, ‘nd ol’ Abyss mountain.”
“This be t’ life like,” Donald added.
The three lay down, belly-up on the grass and stared up at the moon, or what they could see of it.
“This be the life indeed.” Colin stretched and closed his eyes, as Vikki rested her head on his stomach, asleep. “Hey, Don? Ya think she like me?”
“Who ain’t gonna like ya?” Donald answered, smiling.
“Ya know what I mean. Ya think she like me, like me? I mean, we are sixteen like, we gotta start thinkin’ about girls an’ all.”
“Firstly, I eighteen. Secondly, nah mate ya be thinkin’ about girls, I… prefer t’ be alone. Tis a Haunter thin’ I guess. ‘Sides, you can’t exactly have a family together, if ya stay together. It won’t work…”
“Stuff it ya coot. Beau’iful night to be out though, huh Don?”
“Yeah, beau’iful,” Donald answered.
