{(notes)} One day while cleaning up my room, I found an old notebook containing the first chapter of this collection of stories. I edited it a bit, some clean-up here and there, a bit of update on the lore I built around this version of the Pokemon world. Then, considering I already have a bunch of other thoughts and short stories in this universe, I decided to start properly compiling them in "there's a time and place for everything".
Expect random updates, since this is a mere collection of one-shots as previously mentioned. But I hope that you do enjoy whatever is in here. Notes and all.
One: A Championship viewed in One Island.
Leaf entered the One Island Pokemon Center to find a crowd. It's as if all the islanders decided on holding a meeting she didn't hear about beforehand, and she's gate-crashing. "Leaf!" someone called and she looked around to find Celio waving from his usual spot near his machine. He didn't look like he was going to leave there anytime soon so Leaf pushed through the crowd to get to him. "Hey, what's happening?" Leaf asked when she finally reached him. At the same time, the people let out a collective cheer, and it only increased her interest. Must be the TV. In her single-minded goal to get to Celio, she didn't think of looking around her, again. Reminds her why Red worried on leaving her on her own this time. "Everyone watches big news together in the Center like this," Celio explained. Leaf giggled. She knew the feeling. Pallet Town citizens did the same thing when there's big news, only at the Professor's place instead of a Center, much to his exasperation. He still let them, though, and was usually the most vocal of them all. "Someone challenged the Elite Four again," Celio continued. "It's just, what, two weeks from the last challenger? So fast! Don't you think it's a little too soon for a new Champ?" Yes, but the three of them never thought much of that, really. "Did the one from last week..." Leaf hesitantly asked, trailing off. "Lose..?" Oops, that was probably rude. "Win?" "Oh, of course he won," Celio scoffed. "It's Blue Oak, after all." "...a-and, now, the challenger's...?" "Venusaur's down!" the commentary shouts, and frustrated groans rise from part of the crowd. "Darn, that was his starter, wasn't it?" Leaf's heart sped up. There's only one person she knew, who had gone this far, and had a Venusaur for his starter. It's... "Red." She finally looked up. ***
Red had a pinched expression on his face as he withdraws his fallen starter, hand shaking a little. But he forced a grin as he grabbed another Pokeball--his last-- "GO, Pikachu!!!" ***
Leaf released the breath she didn't realize she was holding. The Pokemon Center was exploding with activity after the match, all sorts of reactions going around. Even Celio's freaking out beside her. And yet she felt disconnected from all of these. It was a little lonely, muted, and she's tense. There's a quiet energy building up inside her. Like the calm before the storm. Or the still ground bracing for an aftershock. She shouldn't be here. No. She felt their challenge. She's not one of them for nothing. She's the aftershock. Well, time to get going.
{(notes)} At Cinnabar Island, Red and Leaf had the choice of going on to the league or help out Bill at Sevii Islands first. Red went ahead and continued chasing Blue, as per the original storyline of the games, while Leaf volunteered to help out. During her adventures in Sevii, the two boys became Champions and she's now deciding to catch up.

Johto Quartet
"Still can't reach him?" Lyra asked, pouting.
"His PokeGear's ringing but he's not answering..." Ethan muttered as he pressed the call button on his PokeGear again. "I told you, he doesn't--"
"You know that the quickest way to talk to him is to actually go to him, right?" Kris suggested to the two of them, making them jump. They were crouching behind Professor Elm's lab like Silver once did and thinking they looked normal and not suspicious at all when they actually are.
"But it's Sunday!" Ethan whined. "He disappears on Sundays!"
Kris was honestly curious how Ethan figured that out but it's a topic for another day. "No one just disappears."
"He does!"
And as if to prove Ethan wrong, his Pokegear rang with a message from no other than Silver!
Silver>>Stop it. I don't want to see your ugly face.
"I don't want to see your ugly face, either!" Ethan typed and replied furiously. "The girls want to, though."
Silver>>They have good taste. Usually. And usually applies to me. Silver>>Tell Lyra the Egg still has a few miles to go. Silver>>And Kris, the legends of Blackthorn are passed down orally. Silver>>Give them some time to actually write them down.
The response was enough to make the girls just so excited. It's almost like they forgot why they were looking for Silver in the first place.
For once, Ethan was the one not acting like or being led around like the puppy he is by the redhead. So he pressed the call button again and impatiently waited for Silver to pick up. He can't just hang up when--
"Call dismissed."
Ethan howled in frustration. Kris and Lyra laughed at the typical exchange.
{(notes)} Yes, Silver disappears on weekends.

Legends and Eggs
Kris felt somewhere in between amazement (for Silver was thoroughly interviewing Miss Gogo and managed to obtain more info for their hunt) and exasperation (Silver still had that challenging look on his face).
"Anyway, I would have thought you'd be over at Kanto," Silver mused. "They're native there, right?"
"I thought so, too," Gogo agreed. "And Professor Willow agrees, but Professor Oak suggested to work together with you since we're working on the same thing?"
"I guess that's true," he relented, simmering down.
"And we're happy to have you," Kris added. "The others, too, probably, but we're the ones working on the legendaries, so..."
"Oh, you have a team working on the PokeDex? That's nice! I have a partner, too, his name's Go, but, uh... guess I'm just the one working on the legendaries on my end, too."
"Where is he?" Silver interjected.
"Ah, he got roped into an Egg-hatching marathon by his Team Leader, again."
"Seems to me like our missing members would get along!" Kris laughed. Ethan and Lyra were made to work on getting pre-evolved Pokemon, and it involves lots of Eggs and marathons.
"He just couldn't say no," Gogo groaned, facepalming in embarrassment. "Plus it's like Spark--he's Go's Team Leader--it's like he always knows where Go is! And he asks Go personally then Go falls victim to the puppy face every time because he never looks away..."
"Sounds familiar," Kris snickered, and elbowed Silver, who growled at her, though there's a hint of embarrassment on his own face as well.
{(notes)} Gogo is the female protagonist of Pokemon Go. She's in Team Mystic. In turn, Go is the male protagonist. At the end of the Johto quartet's main quest (mainly Ethan chasing after Silver and becoming Champ while throttling Team Rocket on the way), the quartet were scolded by Prof. Elm because they didn't even think about completing the JohtoDex. So they worked on that post-game, until they're left with legendaries and pre-evolutions.
Kris and Silver went for the legendaries while Ethan and Lyra worked on Eggs (Lyra is the grandchild of the DayCare couple).
As for the legendaries they were hunting, they decided to go for the legendary bird trio first, since they had previous sightings already and because they are connected to Lugia. Thus putting into motion the events of this one-shot.

A Horrific Myth
Look not into the Pokémon's eyes.
In but an instant, you'll have no recollection of who you are.
Return home, but how? When there is nothing to remember? Unbenownst to most, Uxie does open its eyes, when it's made sure the Trainer and the other Pokemon are deep in sleep. And so Uxie finally puts a face to the name, to the comforting presence. It's a kind face, one Uxie wouldn't mind looking at forever. Uxie once had the brilliant idea to snoop around for pictures, if only to complete the image of the Trainer in its head. But it knows no picture could possibly capture the life in those eyes, the windows to the Trainer's very soul. It's an impossible wish, but Uxie wishes it could witness that, one day. Dare not touch the Pokémon's body.
In but three short days, all emotions will drain away. Mesprit loves the cold weather, if only because it gives the Trainer an excuse to bundle up. Because on cold days, they bundle up and wrapped the touch-starved Mesprit in their arms. The first time it happened, Mesprit almost ran away again, dreading the Trainer's fate should they touch. But no, nothing happened to them. And Mesprit simply melted into the Trainer's warm touch. But it knows that there's a difference between the fabric and the bare skin of the Trainer. It's an impossible wish, but Mesprit wishes it could feel that, one day. Above all, above all, harm not the Pokémon.
In a scant five days, the offender will grow immobile in entirety. Azelf is always gentle, always careful. Even if it's only a projection of it's will, basically just a spirit. After all, they can't be too careful. Arceus help the poor clumsy fool who hurts Azelf on accident. The curse will activate, regardless. Plus Azelf knew the Trainer was a bit of a fool (a strong, loving fool who isn't afraid of most things), so more reason for it to be more careful, not just for it's own sake, but for the Trainer's, as well. But it knows there's a thrill in battle, and enjoyment in letting go of oneself and indulging in mindless fun with the others, as the Trainer is prone to. It's an impossible wish, but Azelf wishes it could indulge in that simple happiness without worry, one day. ***
When Uxie finally looked the Trainer in the eye, their eyes held no life in their eyes. When Mesprit finally felt the Trainer to the skin, their touch was cold like the bitter wind. When Azelf finally indulged the Trainer, they were already still.
{(notes)} Fitting to this forum, here's something Sinnoh, something found in *dundun* the Canalave Library, too!
Soo, the Horrific Myth in Pokemon is a thing, and this is my take on it.

there's another fancy league event and Ethan thanks Arceus for Silver: We easily forget that Silver's the son of a well-dressed mafia man. But Ethan does not, and he puts that information to good use.
"Here."
Red dress shirt, black suit jacket and tie, slacks, and matching shoes. Nothing too fancy, Ethan had begged, and Silver complied, which was just fine. It suited Ethan more like that, like he explained to the two girls too eager to play dress up with the distressed Ethan. It's probably a good thing that he forged a place in Silver's good graces and that the rival is actually willing enough to help since he's definitely much, much better at this between the two of them, even and especially without the help of the girls, which Ethan appreciated. Now faced with the crisp clothing picked and agreed on, Silver can't help but notice that the Champion still rather intimidated.
"Come on, you did things like this already. I'd have thought you already got used to it," Silver scoffed. As Champion, social functions were inevitable and Ethan had been to a lot of them, and more often than not, Silver's doing the same thing every time. That is, being Ethan's personal assistant and eventual plus one.
"I know! I know. It's still scary. And-and this one's actually in celebration for me! Everyone's gonna stare." All these years in his Championship, and Ethan's still out of it on situations like this.
"Everyone's gonna stare," Silver repeated in disbelief. "You're the Champion. Everyone stares at you on a daily basis."
"But not like this! This is... I feel like I'm actually put on display!"
Oh, as if he wasn't already.
"Ethan..."
"Silver."
And Arceus, they were still as difficult to each other as before.
"Do I have to dress you?" Silver finally threatened.
"No-"
To Ethan's utter embarrassment, his voice cracked as he denied the threat. Silver's brow twitched at the sound and the Champion took that as his cue to quickly grab the items and change. As the bathroom door slammed shut, Silver took a deep breath as he contemplated the situation, the occasion, the celebration.
Ten years as Champion. Silver had to admit that it was quite the feat. Not to mention that the people had collectively agreed to call Ethan's admittedly long and prosperous reign as the Golden Age of the Indigo League owing to his deeds and contribution to the regions under his jurisdiction. He definitely deserved a celebration. Sure, Ethan got challengers who actually managed to beat him in official matches, but ultimately, none have dared take on the mantle and responsibility of Champion, protector of the peace and welfare of the people and Pokemon after him.
It's much like Lance before Ethan. Speaking of Lance, he had finally retired from his post in the League and went back to Blackthorn to serve more exclusively in his hometown. And readying himself to become the next Elder. That's another celebration.
Basically, a lot happened the past ten years.
Silver blinked.
"Ten years," he breathed in amazement, chuckling. "Has it really been that long?"
"What are you muttering about?"
Ah.
Ethan finally emerged, dressed in the formal clothing bought the day before. He looked so out of his element; all these years and he's still out of it, that Silver's chuckles upped to a laugh. Ethan reddened more and more in embarrassment, and is very much offended, too.
"You're fine, Ethan. You actually look alright," Silver complimented, smirking. "Come here, let's do your hair."
{Spoiler} Again, Silver's the son of a well-dressed mafia man, and he actually knows the ways around social, formal occasions. Ethan thanks Arceus for this every time the League notifies him of another event the Champ is invited to.
Either way, this can be seen as a far sequel of my other fic, Champions of Old. So now we see that Ethan accepted the post and served as Champion for a long time. But he doesn't mind and he does his job well.

keep battling on: Blue talks to Agatha about his grandfather and the past.
"Hey, grandma."
"I ain't your grandma, boy," Agatha snipped, but nevertheless entertained the young... former Champion, tragic that was. "What do you want?"
"Do you know what happened with gramps?"
"Samuel? What, he finally told you 'bout him quitting the League?"
Blue frowned even more. It looked like the child already heard the bits from his grandfather, but did not believe it one bit. "Well, yeah."
Agatha harrumphed, recalling what happened.
"That old duff got stuck in a rut." She reconsidered her words. "Well, his Pokemon did. Looked like battling took a toll on 'em after so long and he suffered a devastating string of losses. And that's on him as Champion. Never was the same again."
His brows furrowed further. Seemed like he heard the same story from his grandfather, what with him only reacting with a simple, disbelieving, "That's it?"
It brought out Agatha's full rage, though.
"'That's it'?! That's it--" she sputtered, gesturing wildly like a witch. "Don't you understand, boy?! Your Pokemon have their own limits, too, and if you don't take down your damn notes on that, you're done for!" An accusing finger stabbed at Blue's direction for emphasis. "That's why your gramps was done for! And, the worst is he never got back up and stuck himself in his papers!"
In her old age, she had to collect herself enough to breathe properly again, and it gave her time to observe the young Oak. He looked confused, conflicted... so, so lost. And with this story about his grandfather...
"I see how it is," she continued, catching Blue's attention once again. "Samuel must have thought so, too. You look like you're going down the same path as him."
"Huh?!" Blue exclaimed, simply against the idea. "No way I'm taking on his research. It's... gonna be another case of being Oak's grandson again," he muttered, displeasure evident in his tone.
Agatha wrinkled her face in sympathy. The pressure's high with someone high-profile in the family. The boy must have lived in the old man's shadow for so long.
"I meant your self-destruction with the way you're going, child," she clarified. "One day, your Pokemon can't keep up with you and leave you to walk your path alone. And a Trainer's path ain't one to be travelled without your Pokemon, as we all know."
"..."
"Well, take good care, kid," Agatha finally sighed after a long stretch of silence. Best let the kid to collect his thoughts in peace after that. "And you better not go soft like that old coot!" she added, always taking chances to make jabs at her former rival. "Be like me and keep battling on!"
"How'd I keep battling on if you say I'm left to walk alone, huh?" Blue finally asked, a little frustration building up his voice, but, for once, mostly sounding lost and unsure.
"Hah! Then ya better walk with your Pokemon! No matter how slooow it could take!" she cackled, fondly tapping at her shadow, which moved on its own in a manner similar to a laugh, mimicking its owner. Blue has the vague feeling that it's not just Agatha laughing there. "Take your time, kid. You've got lots of it."
{(notes)} This is sometime after the Indigo League thing. Blue is getting himself together after the Championship fallout, and finally has a talk with his gramps. He doesn't believe it much, since he has this perfect image of his gramps as a researcher and former Champion. It's like he was finally told Santa isn't real. So he was told to go to Agatha for a second opinion, since she's still a trusted friend and rival to Prof. Oak. And she confirms it's all true.
I honestly don't know how to write Blue and Agatha, but I hope that this is still believable for them.

Overqualified: Red is overqualified for Pokemon Masters
Blue won't stop laughing.
Even when Red squashed him into a corner of the gym with a confused Snorlax.
"C'mon, Red, lemme out."
"No."
"But-"
"No."
"...I'm calling Leaf."
Red glared at Blue's direction, even if it couldn't be seen behind the Snorlax.
"Fine."
Blue did say the magic word. Red withdrew his Snorlax and continued sulking. Mulling things over.
"So! Mr. Overqualified. What's the plan?"
Red glowered at the new nickname.
"How am I overqualified and you're not?!" Red complained again as he reread the contents of his and Blue's letters.
"Charizard was overqualified." Blue shrugged. At least it was only Charizard. "No complaints, I guess. I'll just remind them with my Pidgeot." Since Pidgeot is definitely one of his best, subtly hinted at by being present in whatever combination of his teams.
On the other hand...
"My whole team's overqualified!"
"...pft."
Needless to say, Blue fell into a fit of laughter once again.
As reluctant Red is on admitting it, it felt wrong to go and with another partner Pokemon that isn't Venusaur or Pikachu or any one of his usual. It was supposed to represent a partnership, a shared history with the Pokemon to be registered, but he doesn't have that level of connection with his other Pokemon. Which is why he's now having problems. And the event is just around the corner.
"I'm calling Leaf," Red informed Blue as he stood and dialled.
"Excuse me?" After his show of feeling threatened by the suggestion of calling the last of their trio, he's actually calling her?!
Red's expression was a cross between desperation and determination.
"I'm calling Leaf."
"Whaat?" Blue said in disbelief. "She could be attending!" he warned. "Then she won't be so willing to help you!"
Red glared in warning. Blue didn't have to jinx it. But then the call went through and the two started talking, ignoring Blue completely.
Blue huffed and grumbled something about stupid Red, idiot thinking everything's gonna go as he wanted like his trip to Mt. Silver. But he didn't need to know that it's exactly going to happen again and marched off to his office to check on undone paperwork instead.
"Where did that one come from?" Blue asked with interest as he observed the unfamiliar Charizard inspecting the gym.
"It's really Leaf's," Red replied. "I had a hand with raising it while we were travelling and we attended some tournaments together as a team with Leaf later on so it should be okay as my partner."
"O...kay? You sure it's up to par with your usual? You don't want to drop out so early, do you?"
Nice of Blue to worry, but really, he should be worrying about himself. Red grinned.
"You better have Burn Heal."
{(notes)} The Charizard that Leaf lent is the same one from my other fic Home We'll Go.

It begins...: The beginning of Team GO Rocket's invasion... with more lore in the notes after the chapter hahaa
{(notes)} I tried writing a battle scene and I don't understand what is happening, either.
Go had his first encounter.
He had just woke up, doing his warm-up and stretches for the morning. He promised to do an Egg run with Spark today, and opened his GOApp to check their route. However what caught his eye was a twitching--probably malfunctioning--PokeStop a distance away from their usual route.
Something's wrong.
Well, he isn't in Team Instinct for no reason.
Up close, he was horrified to see the PokeStop completely discoloured; none of the familiar blue or used violet at all. When he reached out to spin it, only a measly few items came out.
"Not seeing many items?" a lilting voice mocked. Go turned to face the intruder, Pokeball at the ready. He sees a woman wearing all black, with a big letter R printed on her shirt, who continued her taunting. "I've been stealing them!"
The woman laughed haughtily, readying a Pokeball of her own when she happened upon his ready stance. "They're mine now! Don't tangle with us!"
And without any further ado, they released their respective Pokemon for a battle.
"It's too early for this," Go grumbled. "Arcanine, let's go! Fire Fang!"
For a small Bulbasaur facing off against a full-grown Arcanine, it didn't even flinch. Probably an "overleveled unevolved Pokemon" as he overheard Mystic Leader Blanche say with a frown on their face.
"No holding back, Flamethrower!"
He observed in the woman's unwavering look as she let the battle on. Wasn't she worried that her Pokemon's getting fried at the moment?
Go snapped out of his overthinking and refocused on the battle at hand. His Arcanine managed to faint the Bulbasaur without any hitch and forced the woman to switch to an Ivysaur. This time, she tried ordering an attack for the Ivysaur, obviously feeling the heat of battle. To his surprise, though, the Pokemon did not listen to her--probably a new Pokemon in her team--yet nevertheless attacked viciously. His eyes widened when his Arcanine almost fainted from the hit.
Go immediately withdrew his Arcanine. "Lopunny, you're up!"
Go's Lopunny expertly dodged the flailing Ivysaur, as it was used to fighting. The woman is unimpressed. Obviously, the Lopunny looks like a mere Normal-type to her, without any type advantage whatsoever.
"Lopunny, Fire Punch!"
His Lopunny weaved through the battlefield, punching in as instructed, even doing it in succession and fainting the enraged Ivysaur. He grinned as the woman's calm was finally broken and she had a look of panic at the surprise fire-type move.
"Hah, you surprised me there, I admit," the woman laughed nervously. "But get ready for this!"
The last Pokemon she sent out was a full-grown Venusaur, and it somehow looked even more menacing than the Ivysaur she sent out previously. It proved its prowess by taking out Go's Lopunny after it barely landed a hit.
Go cursed and withdrew his Lopunny, switching out with a Honchkrow. It flew high and mostly out of the Venusaur's reach.
"Alright, Sky Attack!"
"Solar Beam!" the woman countered.
Honchkrow dove. It damaged the Venusaur pretty well for the type advantage however it was barely holding on after taking a direct hit from the Solar Beam. It only followed up with a few Pecks before the Venusaur lost itself again and angrily attacked without any regard as to what it's actually managing to hit. Even the woman had to dodge a few stray vines.
"One last time, Arcanine!" Go pleaded, throwing out his last Pokemon for the battle. "Flamethrower!!!"
"Crush them!!" The woman yelled. She's on the verge of hysterics.
Go's Arcanine quickly utilized its speed, blowing out a large Flamethrower to the enraged Venusaur's face before it could keep up. They ultimately won by a hair. And yet he didn't dare move until he's sure the Pokemon isn't moving. He saw how dangerous it was before, he wasn't planning to get himself in any danger any time soon, either.
"Why...?" he heard the woman whimper before she shouted in frustration and carelessly threw one of her Pokemon away in her tantrum. She still withdrew the fainted Venusaur, though. Obviously it was her most prized.
"Wait!" Go yelled, but the woman already fled and her Pokemon left behind managed to be free of its ball. It looked very angry.
His Arcanine cut off his path before he could cross the angry Bulbasaur.
Go was immediately occupied with Arcanine's frenzied barks in its attempt to drive the Pokemon away from its trainer. Go nudged his Arcanine out of his way before the strange Pokemon could actually escape and at last he attempted to catch it--the first of the day. With Premier Balls, just in case.
{(these are the notes I was talking about)}
So... Team GO Rocket invaded PoGO. With Shadow Pokemon. That sounded right out from Pokemon Colosseum.
Now I weave their lore together a little and so, normal people like Go couldn't see the dark aura (notice that he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary) and only see an out-of-control Pokemon. Later on when he reports in, he's briefed of similar reports and the GO program officials (Prof. Willow and Spark as per the Special Research) finally track down the source--Team GO Rocket.
As for purification, Prof. Willow makes a correspondence to various profs until he gets a response from Prof. Krane from Orre. And while he was out tracking the Rockets, Candela and Blanche (who were left to hold down the main lab) learn about Shadow Pokemon and the purifying process as well as the program for the Aura Reader that is later installed in the rest of GO program trainers' GOApp so they could identify Shadow Pokez too.
Sheesh. So much headcanon. This is only---

R: Gogo tries interrogating a Team GO Rocket Grunt
"You?!"
Gogo balked when she saw who she's tasked to interrogate. The man looked up.
"Oh, Gogo. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised."
She looked at him in bewilderment, taking in the familiar friendly face... in a Team GO Rocket uniform.
"Wha--you're in Team GO Rocket?!"
He shrugged non-commitedly.
"You caught me. Well, they did." Spark and Go did, when they returned from an investigation to find Team GO Rocket sneaking around the main lab. The two beat them up extra in offense at the slandering of Team Instinct's good name.
"And they sent me here for interrogation," Gogo went straight to the point. "What do you want?"
"To be free, for starters."
"..."
"Uhh... world domination?"
Her glare couldn't get any cuter. She never really got the look for being intimidating, unlike her sister. Although, Candela only barely had the intimidating look, either.
"You know Team Rocket's got a bad rap," she sighed.
"Hey, not all Team GO Rocket grunts are bad," he complained, with an emphasis on GO to correct her insinuations.
"That is not what I said..."
"I mean," he continued. "I just got into this business because I majored in Pokémon philosophy and couldn’t get a job afterward!"
Gogo couldn't believe him.
"I'm just doing this until I finish my master's, to be honest," he confessed.
Gogo gaped.
"And I'm guessing some of your buddies are in this, too?"
"Sure. Jan, Jun, and Jay are getting a bit of reputation."
"Your whole Squad joined." At school, they already have a bit of reputation, too.
"Mhm. And they say I'm the leader all because I go by R."
Gogo couldn't believe him. Them.
"What IS bad, anyways?" R wondered aloud.
"I mean...besides stealing Pokémon, taking over PokéStops, and planning worldwide domination, what really sets you and me apart?"
He's really out here asking the real questions. But-- Gogo blinked rapidly in confusion, trying to process. But, but-- Wait, no! Dammit, those aren't--!
"You can't just "besides" those things!"
Gogo fumed.
{(notes)}
The Team GO Rocket grunts invading the twitter..... they dissed Team Instinct!! X(
Anyway, in case it wasn't clear enough, Gogo has upperclassmen from school who are apparently in Team GO Rocket and she's trying to interrogate one of them.

a pair of runaways: Hilda reveals her past and Hilbert suggests something for the future.
"My parents, they didn't want me to be a Trainer," Hilda confessed. "So I ran away, found myself in the Subway, met some people who taught me how to battle and have been battling there ever since!"
Hilbert frowned in concern. He understood her parents's worries, since being a Trainer tended to expose someone to danger.
"How long have you been doing this?"
"Erm, two years?" she answered with a sheepish grin. "Yeah, I was twelve. I was so mad. There are preschooler trainers, so why can't I be a Trainer, too?"
Hilbert nodded in acceptance. Two years battling in the Subway. So that was why she was so good in the first place.
"But it's different in the Subway and outside, huh?" she mused. "For one thing, there's lots of space."
And for her, it somehow felt a bit freeing. Even more than the freedom she felt the first time she proved herself in battle; even more than when the shadow of regret for running away vanished in the lights of battle.
"Are you going back to the Subway after this?" Hilbert asked tentatively.
"Mmh, probably," she admitted. "But there's still so much to see, I'm not entirely sure yet."
And he caught the longing in her voice. She might have run away from home, but she stuck herself in the Battle Subway afterward. She barely got off the trains to see the rest of the world.
So much for running away.
"We could go on," he suggested. "After we find N, we don't have to go back to Unova yet."
"What? Don't you have to go home? And your Mom--"
"Will be fine," he cut her off. "She's a trainer, too, so I'm sure she'll understand."
Hilda gaped at the boy looking determinedly at her.
"Heh, a pair of runaways, that's what we are," she laughed.
He grinned. He knew he won her over.
"You're a bad influence."
"You're making me feel bad," she joked. "Ingo and Emmet are gonna miss me, though."
The two Subway Leaders? How can they miss her so bad..? Huh?
"Are they the ones who taught you?!" he blurted in panic.
She grinned.
"Uh-huh. They're gonna be so mad, their Subway princess won't be home for, oh, I dunno. Only Arceus knows how long."
Hilbert balked. One of them was already scary enough to face alone, two of them was a nightmare--!
"On second thought, we better get back as soon as possible."
"What! No way!!"
{(notes)}
So Hilbert's the protagonist, and Hilda's the Battle Subway partner. The story is how she got to be there, I guess? And let's just say the Battle Subway's there for several years now, too.
Hilda would have stayed in the Subway, but somehow or another, she got roped into the BW storyline (with some places differing by version, iirc, so she'll go to one of them while Hilbert is in the other?). Afterwards, after everything and N is defeated and disappears, she travels together with Hilbert to look for him.

Sleep and Coffee: The woes of all-nighters...
"No signals?" Spark yawned, looking over the Rocket Radar as well. "Well, it is getting pretty late..."
Go thought criminals usually waited for the cover of night, but apparently it wasn't the case with Team GO Rocket. Their beauty sleeps must be a must.
"...and I need to go meet up with Willow," Go barely caught Spark's continued grumblings.
"What, really?" Go blurted, checking the time. "This late?" It's almost midnight.
Spark only shrugged.
"Anyway, we might have better luck catching them in the daytime, when Candela and I usually get our research done," he said.
Go could feel a headache building for his leader.
"Seriously? What about Blanche?" Go dared ask.
"Like clockwork," Spark snorted. "Sleeps at eight, rises at four. That's eight hours. And they get everything done before bed, too, so there's no guilt there for them. Ah, well..."
Go shook his head in disapproval of Spark's–and Candela's–sleeping habits, but didn't have the energy to make a deal out of it tonight. After all, they spent the whole day hunting for Team GO Rocket and they still seemed nowhere to be found even with the radar.
"Goodnight, Go," Spark interrupted his thoughts.
"Goodnight, Spark."
When Go visited HQ the next morning, with coffee in hand, he was immediately hounded by several longing looks. All from the poor souls who spent the night in HQ. After all, there's only one reason people stay overnight in HQ and it's still the usual work. Research or guard duty or moral support, it didn't matter. They were zombies, all of them. Well, there were the few chipper ones but the eye bags were unmistakable. "Go, that you?" Candela called from the leaders' offices. She waved him over when he noticed her. "Good morning!" Go greeted her in return, and stared in wonder. For someone who apparently had an all-nighter, she seemed wide awake. Although she's clutching her Flareon and smushing her cheek into its fur like one would a pillow. "That's weird, Spark said you're usually up late, and that's saying something," she hummed. "Considering he gets up later than Blanche and I and he still goes out for his first Egg run in the morning and comes back complaining you weren't there!" At this point, Go is starting to go red in embarrassment that he decided to cut her off right there. "I, uh, we had a late night-" Candela shot him a wide, wide grin. Go's scared and also embarrassed to think of the other implications of his words. Which Candela seemed to think they did. Which they definitely did NOT do. Nope! Not last night, at least, and-- WAIT. " And he mentioned he's gonna have a later night," he pressed on, blushing all the while, "so, so I—" Candela cut him off in turn with a gasp. "That coffee's for him?!" And ends the question with a loud aww before they were both interrupted by a louder alarm blaring off somewhere inside the office. Which was immediately shut off. But then Go couldn't hear anyone waking up. Which was weird. People made sounds when they wake, right? A yawn, some joints popping, maybe? Large inhale? "Did no one tell you coffee's banned for us three in the morning?" Blanche asked, suddenly right there and joining the conversation. "I know, so... this is decaf?" "So jealous!" Candela whined. Her Flareon whined in tune with its master. Even Blanche looked at the cup with a bit of longing. Ah, Go was right. So there was some leeway for decaf. "A-anyway, I'm guessing that alarm was Spark's..?" "That was Spark's," Candela confirmed, sighing. "But he never wakes up to it so." She makes a vague gesture about what went down earlier. "You know. Blanche turns it off. But doesn't wake him up. Oh! You can wake him up. He'll cry if no one wakes him for his morning run." "It's true," Blanche spoke up in support to the claim. "...why don't you wake him up?" '"Ah, uh~ honestly, we're both scared," Candela confessed. "And you're here! It's perfect, you wake him up for once, please!" Go couldn't believe it. "What? Spark? You?!" Go sputtered. "You're. Scared of Spark." Spark the admittedly adorable puppy of a man. "Generally, one should be scared of someone who wants to sleep, waking another much more so," Blanche explained calmly. "Well, you're free to try." Because they're definitely not going to, nope. And that was the end of discussion.
"He growled at me!!!"
{(notes)}
The woes of all-nighters. We've been there.
This was based on what Spark said if there are no Rockets in sight late in the evening, specifically about how he and Candela usually get their research done in the daytime.
And he had to meet Willow before that, too, and the man's probably snoozing in the office already despite claims of waiting and getting more stuff done.

Partners: A glimpse in the life of two officers.
"I got you now!" Ethan screeched, giving chase. Let it be said that when the Champion Ethan gives chase, he's not letting you escape, and you're definitely not going to escape.
He's led through the sprawling underground networks—a remnant of Team Rocket's operations. The League was working on it—renovating, repurposing—but progress was slow and some bad eggs were quick to claim some areas for their questionable activities. So for now, Ethan's stuck chasing such people around and capturing them.
"Alright, go Furret!" he yelled, throwing a Pokeball far out front, and the lithe Pokemon closed the distance between them in an instant.
The man lets out a string of curses as he and the Pokemon stumble down. And end the short tussle with the Furrent pinning him down.
"Good job, Fur," Ethan praised as he caught up shortly and his Furret purred under the praise. "And you're under arrest," he added to the man still struggling vainly under the Pokemon.
The man was quickly cuffed; and now that he got it in his head that he's not escaping anytime soon, he cackled and started spinning a tale of his future plans with his brother that's apparently still out there and that "this is not the end of it!"
Ethan simply led him out, following his Furret slinking ahead. He lets her be out and about, a small reward for the assist.
"You hear me, kid?!" the man screamed into his ear, again, and Ethan nonchalantly nods a yes before finally hauling him out into the street.
Ethan had to stifle his grin at the shocked exclamation from the man when he sees his own brother already waiting for him. Inside the cruiser. Passed out.
"You sure took your time," Silver grumbled. He was holding the cooling pad to his jaw.
"He was fast!" Ethan defended his long capture time as he urged the man inside, beside his brother. "Woah-kay," he breathes out as he took in the siblings side by side. "But the little brother looks healthier than you, how was he caught first?"
Silver shut the door before the older brother could screech out an offended retort.
"I'm sure the younger one's faster, but he's an idiot who thought he could fight me," Silver informed him.
"Right. Looked like he decked you pretty good, too."
Ethan poked away the hand holding up the cooling pad to inspect a bruise blooming in Silver's face.
"Decked him harder," Silver huffed with just a hint of smugness that has Ethan laughing in delight.
They say he had a single braincell, but they clearly haven't heard of Silver.
{(notes, and its quite long I didn't know I wrote this much food for thought)}
The idea came to me out of the blue. Like, "what happens next for the Johto protagonists?"
And I already figured from the previous works that Ethan would go on to become Champion for a long time, but what exactly is he gonna do while he's still one? He's gonna grow up, okay! What else is he gonna do with his life?! Being Champ and simply waiting for something to happen is just... no? And it's not like in Galar, either, where the Gym Challenge is already like an organized tournament with sponsors ans all. In Johto, it's still mostly all on you.
So, the Team Rocket and other crimes clean-up is happening, of course, but what about after??? I'm talking Cynthia, with her work (probably) towards mythology, Steven being the heir of a company, Diantha's an actress, etc.
And my brain delivered. Continuing the line of eradicating Team Rocket, he also technically caught up with Silver (who had the crime of stealing a Pokemon), so what if he grows up to be a police officer along with his duties as a Champion??? That's great?! Hey, let's drag Silver into this, make this into a buddy cop!
And so this snippet is born. It's so short, though. The creative juices ran out as I rattled off before I could write a fic out of these ideas, ahahaaa
Yes, Ethan mains a Furret.
