Hi all! I wanted to share some concept drawings from my upcoming Persona 5/Pokemon crossover fic. (I'll be ready to start posting it pretty soon!)

First--let's introduce our protagonists!

Goro is an aspiring trial captain, very goal-oriented, with high expectations for himself and others. He dreams of one day becoming champion, and proving his worth to the world. he's kind to his Pokemon, but takes battling very seriously.

Akira got in trouble in his home region on bogus charges, and was sent to live with a family friend in Alola to serve out his probation sentence. he quickly grew bored and decided to become a trainer/embark on the island challenge to give himself something to do. despite not taking training that seriously, he’s a surprisingly good battler whose Pokemon hold him in high regard.

design-wise, for Akira I decided to just modify the Persona 5 protagonist's summer outfit into similar clothes to ones you can get in Sun and Moon. We never get to see Goro in summer casual wear in P5 (which is an absolute crime, btw), so instead I modified his winter outfit.

When I was first starting out as an artist I actively tried to emulate Ken Sugimori's style, so it was fun going back to my roots for this, haha~

Since it's actually Goro's canon birthday today, I drew an additional little doodle:

I'll likely add more illustrations and concept art to this thread as the fic goes on, so look forward to them! ^^

In Sun and Moon, Kukui mentions that Rotom Pokedexes are rare--so I decided to design a more standard version for everyone else to use. in previous games, trainers carried several helpful devices (Pokedex, PokeNav, Battle Recorder, Map, etc etc) at once. for this fic I envisioned a single device that could do it all.

Smartphones play a role in the plot of Persona 5, so the motif fits... but truthfully I wasn't even thinking about that when I designed it lmao. Considering how much utility the device has, a smartphone just made sense.

Ah, this helps me visualise your characters better -- I wasn't quite sure what you meant by describing Goro's hair as 'almond-coloured', for instance; it's an unusual descriptor for hair and almonds come in a variety of colours depending on how they've been prepared.

I also think that the pokémon have much more personality in this art! Look at Robin Hood, for instance -- that's kind of what I meant by animals having characters; it's not so much making pokémon talk, but having them being present, doing things. Robin's being particularly characterful here, but even just having the pokémon constantly doing little things here and there would help. If you have long stretches of narration that's all about the humans where the pokémon don't do anything, the humans naturally end up stealing the show.

Also I really like the -- what do you call it? the crispness, maybe? -- of this style. All these clean lines and blocks of colour are really rather attractive. It's very Sugimori, and I like it a lot.

Art for the new chapter of between the stars and us! Given two sweatervest-wearing star students, I just had to have them interact! (and also, I wanted to show off the differences in their heights... Ilima is canonically 5'5", while Goro is 5'10"). I added their ages to have a giggle--Ilima's canon age isn't specified, but in the fic he's 19.

I really like this first drawing. The mixture of the different styles which you have presented does show your skill set in regards to the poses and characterisation of these people. My favourite aspects of this drawing are the little pictures with the starters, alongside their poses.

Looking at image 2 I couldn’t stop laughing at how happy Rowlet looks sitting on the character’s head. It is amazing. It really cheered me up. I am unsure whether the other character is reacting to seeing a Rowlet sitting on someone’s head, or whether he is just thumbs upping, however, either works. Litten seems a little confused by what is going on in either scenario. Just one minor thing is the collar on the right of the upper character is a little too sharp for the perspective, but it isn’t a major problem.

This image of the Pokédex is nice, as it shows a revolution in a way from the old brick version given in Red compared to a possibly upgraded version for the more modern era. I especially love the little comment about Wifi attached to the side, which also made me laugh. It begs the question of why there hasn’t actually been a mobile-Pokédex yet.

The drawing itself is really well done, I love the app with the Pikachu, this is wonderful attention to detail. The colours used are vibrant in places, and make it look like an actual phone that could be bought in a region… someday… maybe?

Out of all the drawings so far, this one is my favourite. The detail on the clothing is well done, and the colours are perfect. The two characters seem to compliment each other, both colour wise and appearance wise. Their expressions are well drawn and add to the atmosphere created by the image.
